Have you ever been to the drag strip and watched the latest/greatest/super-fast sportbike run as slow as molasses? Maybe the rider sucks? Or maybe the rider doesn’t have the correct set-up for drag racing, especially in the clutch department. In preparation for a trip to the strip with Gixzilla, Brock personally demonstrates how an industry trend moving towards ‘ramp-style’ slipper clutches is making a quick trip down the drag strip even more elusive. Naturally, Brock not only cures this issue, but he takes you on a detailed ride while doing it.
Grab your popcorn and enjoy, ‘2017 GSX-R1000 S2B: Episode 8 - Dragstrip Prep - Clutch Mod Conversion’.

Brock Davidson there are loads of bike tutorials on RU-vid where the “bike expert” is pretty questionable, I love all of your vids because there is no questioning your knowledge and advise. All your vids are extremely helpful to the everyday garage hero. Thank you for taking the time to make these. Thanks from Boise Idaho!!!

Brock Davidson Great video and unattainable info provided. Great job as always. Quick question. This mod doesn't affect the tc in any way will it?

Brock Davidson Ok cool. Your mod works very good and I'm considering it but did not want it to interfere with the tc since I like cornering also. I'm good with not having the slipper function when down shifting. I appreciate how you broke down how the clutch works on this bike. Since it works like a switch, either on or off, I guess that's why the came up with launch control to use with the clutch or maybe it was vice versus.

I really appreciate you taking time out to teach us lay mechanics. Having a physical therapy and nursing background I really enjoy the thorough assessment and breakdown of each topic. I remember about 8 to 10 years ago explaining to people the difference between flashing your ECU versus solely using a power commander / Bazzaz tuner. It was your explanation I heard that made this topic clear for me. I like most people thought this was some type of gimmick or something like the Kawasaki "jumper mod". After I heard you expo it I forwarded people your information so they understand these are not the same modifications. Thanks again

I had to stop when I heard you say lever free play adjustment! You are absolutely correct... you have to have free play in that lever. The way that some videos are telling Harley riders to adjust the lever is wrong. Leaving an eighth of an inch or less play is nonsense. A big thumbs UP!!

Have to admit, the difference in launch very was apparent, almost makes me want to drag race. Now if I take that road racing, then off the start line I'll be first to turn one, but afterwards I'd have to back it in on every corner, probably wouldn't get on the podium, but it'd sure be fun.

Slip releases on back-torque, but also bites on acceleration. Hard to modulate a slip/assist clutch on bite due to ramping actions. Weren't the first versions just slip (back torque) without assist (forward torque)? Single ramp versus dual?

Drag racing with my Z-28 camaro if you don't use the clutch properly you are either going to smoke the tires or bog the engine with open plenum intake .. I had slipping the clutch to keep the tires from smoking or the engine bogging .. I had down to a Science.. Thanks to all the jooow Tooog videos I watch I learned Never let off on the gas.. just hit the rear brake if you start to wheelie too much . With my slow old Yamaha FZ-07 I smoked a Harley at a stop light the first race .. the next red light I tried to do a wheelie .. and I let off the gas the the Harley actually pulled ahead.. but not for long as there was a huge sweeping curve ahead. . anytime the road has curves it's bye bye Harley .. You need a longer swing are for Drag racing .. but I suppose your GSXR is a track bike . I was Pretty good at whole shots on a dirt bike too .. at age 16 I pulled the whole shot on 33 125 motocross bikes in my first moto cross race..

Hi Brock... nice mod here. By the way, in what comes to performance spark plugs it has Been really hard to find the apropriate ones for this bike, and specially in the case of bmw because they have lifted the compression of the pistons compared to the previous model, what turn things more dificult... brisk claims itself their racing silver plugs with 360 degrees diacharge to be the best ones... although i have already seen 10hp loss on dyno with them... Any right choice dyno prooven for this mod...? Thanks
@BrockDavidson
@BrockDavidson 6 лет назад
We use the stock plugs at the manufactures recommended gap. We shorten the gap to .022 inch if the engine will see nitrous oxide use.
@michaelovitch

22:30 if the stack height is reduced you don't loose spring pressure ,you just loose preload (so you eventually get some slack between the stack and pressure plate ) With linear coil springs like here (non progressive springs) you can't get more pressure or less pressure by compressing or decompressing them,but only more or less preload. You need to shorten a spring it by cutting it and compensate with a shim to get more pressure, with the same preload (spring dimension) It's just a bar of steel,but in a helicoidal shape. A shorter bar is always less flexible than a longer bar of the same steel.(see leaf springs stacks) Normally the spring kit you sell is composed of springs with a slightly thicker bar diameter,or a different alloy from the stock springs. that's why they create more pressure,once preloaded : same coil length but thicker. Very interesting video,specially the part where you adjust the slack on the thrower.
@BrockDavidson
@BrockDavidson 6 лет назад
If the stack is shortened, the pressure plate will move closer to the backing plate (spring pocket in pressure plate moves also - spring post does not), which will make the spring preload (if you prefer) and resulting overall static pressure, less.
@michaelovitch
@michaelovitch 6 лет назад
Yes. Peoples are often confused by the spring pressure and the preload associated with its use. As a pro being attentioned to the details and parameters like you are, in your videos,you should use preload and pressure in their specific use,moreover speaking about springs and shims used with. Very interesting video,keep it this way,and don't be afraid to be technical,you have the good and patient way to explain principles correctly. Greets from France : )

Very informative ! I don't drag race but I have a question : I bought Heavy Duty Spring set from you for my new Z900RS Café. I was surprised there were only 3 springs when I got them. Looking @ your vid I just realized it is BC I have a slipper clutch ! (my first one) So what is the purpose of installing the stiffer springs on it if it "locks up" on the OEM springs ? On all my previous bikes I always upgraded to heavy duty springs but there was never a slipper clutch in them. So should I install your kit or not on my Z900RS Café ? What would it do/ change ? Thanks, George
@BrockDavidson
@BrockDavidson 4 года назад
You have an "assist" clutch with a slipper. Our kit allows the bike to accelerate quicker, while removing your mushy lever feel, until the assist kicks in and removes any feel you just had from the equation.
@SystemAdministrator1
@SystemAdministrator1 6 лет назад
Brock you're amazing. Question: Now, with your mod installed, does the slipper clutch aspect still work for downshifting at high rpm for circuit racing like originally intended?
@BrockDavidson
@BrockDavidson 6 лет назад
No. The slipper aspect is completely removed... it works like a standard motorcycle clutch.
@RingTuned

OK! now I don't feel so stupid because I took my new to me mostly stock gen1 busa to the track and I couldn't get it under 1.85 60ft and that was on the back wheel. Now the next question. What can I do to keep the front end down after the 1-2 shift? It picks strait up when I spray the 40 shot after the shift.

So would this set up be ideal for other kinds of Motorsports like track racing as well to get better launches at the start? I’m just curious to if there are any differences in clutch set up drag v track racing having done neither myself.
@BrockDavidson
@BrockDavidson 6 лет назад
If you need a smooth/clean launch from a dead stop - yes. If you need the slipper more for the racing you do, then you might not need it. You would need to try it both ways to see which works better for you.

First, thanks for this video. It was supper helpful. I just needed a quick run thro because the service manual made no sense on the adjustment procedure. How often would you recomend checking the clutch pushrod adjustment for street? Also i wish there was a way to retain the slipper and still have those awesome launches with the backdated clutch. brock I have question, I just got a zx10r 2018 and I wanted something different as far as an exhaust because I do already have a full system alien head on my 2017 gsxr 1000 , I was going ask you bc I wanted to try something different on this bike and bc you know a lot about exhausts and whats not so im triying to decide whether I want to do a sc project can crt exhaust or the two brothers s1 r exhaust that one rides low and is about the length of the alien head which will perform better in the 9/10 mile , id appreciate your opinion and do you think they'll change the zx10r for 2019 or 2020
@BrockDavidson
@BrockDavidson 6 лет назад
I can't tell you about the performance of systems we do not sell/have never tested. I can tell you that overall exhaust length is only one factor which determines power/performance. head pipe lenght/diameter/ step configuration makes the most difference - can length makes close to the least.

Is that the same as a slider, what your talking about (slipper)? Would you say that a full lock up is a better application for drag raceing on a stretched bike? And I love you carbon fiber wheels I'm buying some from you will they work on a jen 1.....
@BrockDavidson
@BrockDavidson 4 года назад
@Anthony Welsh - from a drag perspective, no a slipper and slider are very differnt. The slipper works like a conventional clutch...a slider works like a mini bike centrifugal clutch: no clutch lever required, but the bike in gear and it will accelerate as you twist the gas. Your lock-up question on a stretched bike isn't so easy. You can have anything from a simple 2 stage lock up, to a slider, to a multistage to a Gen 2 multistage. The use of the bike would determin the need. Yes we have many 'Gen 1' fitments, click here for more details: brocksperformance.com/wheels-tires/bst-carbon-fiber-wheels/

Love the videos Brock very informative. You make it sound at least to me, that slipper clutches are relatively new when they've been in production bikes for well over a decade. Also I get the aspect that a dedicated system is better than a system designed for every aspect of riding but I don't follow when you say a slipper clutch is either on or off. On to me is fully engaged, off is disengaged. There seems to be plenty of 'slip' in between. Other wise you couldn't take of from a standstill. The instant your driving forward I don't understand how a slipper clutch grips less or is harder to modulate than a regular clutch.
@BrockDavidson
@BrockDavidson 6 лет назад
For clarity: Traditional slippers have been around for a long time, the 'ramp style' shown in this in OEM applications are new.

My 06 GSXR 750 makes a howling noise when I slip the clutch. Does it on the drag strip or even at red lights with soft launches. What could be causing that?
@BrockDavidson
@BrockDavidson 6 лет назад
That's the slipper clutch. In some bikes it sounds like a dog getting kicked in the ribs, lol.
@TEAMWRIGHTEOUS
@TEAMWRIGHTEOUS 6 лет назад
Okay. I didn't know they put them in back then. Glad to know it's nothing to worry about. It already was coming up with the 17/47(0/+2) setup. I just assumed it was the additional power and stock height vs my Katana which was lowered and strapped down. It's .08 slower than the Kat but 10mph faster in the 1/8 mi. I imagine the 16 front is gonna make it a bitch to launch now. Lol. May try to lower and strap it one weekend and try my luck there.

Unfortunately the GSX-R600's are different and non of our clutch items will help. Your best bet would be to figure out if your inner and outer baskets are worn out. Go here: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-_YFqq5kI-fw.html inspecting your inner and outer are performed exactly the same.

Hi! I have a serious question regarding this setup. First of all, great and informative videos, I enjoy them a lot! The question: Me, as a competetive track rider, would I benefit from this setup or would this setup shred the slipper cluth possibilities and make the bike not suiteable for track riding? I can see some benefits why to use this setup but I'm worrying that the already pretty good slipper clutch would lose it's glory if I upgraded to something like this. Hope you will get back with an honest answer. Kind regards, S.A Racing
@BrockDavidson
@BrockDavidson 2 года назад
Great question! Generally speaking, a fully functioning slipper would be preferred for track days.

Would this be possible with the 2008 Yam R6? At the moment, it does a mid 1.8 to the 60 with a 10.5 ET. I've seen on your site that you do the 09-14 R1, but would I be able to retrofit the r1 mod to my r6?

hey brock! just installed the clutch mod and i’m having a hard time keeping the adjustment screw with slack after the 3/4 turn. it has slack up until i adjust the clutch from the lever, is that normal or should it still have a little bit of slack
@BrockDavidson
@BrockDavidson 2 года назад
They must be adjusted in order. Max slack at lever, adjust screw at clutch 1full turn out. Readjust slack at lever.

Did you try the R model with launch control? Is it just something to put on paper or actually useful?
@BrockDavidson
@BrockDavidson 5 лет назад
We did not try launch control on the GSX-R1K. FYI: we have never used an OEM launch control that did anything other than slow us down at the drag strip. It seems to work ok for drag racing rookies, but it is far too intrusive for a skilled rider with a properly set up bike.

I know you are just demonstrating , but I thought you were supposed to soak those fiber plates in ATF before assembly same as coating the steel plagtes ?
@BrockDavidson
@BrockDavidson 4 года назад
ATF? Maybe in a Harley.. but not in a sportbike with a wet clutch. Mixing ATF and synthetic motor oil can make an engine destroying mix (or lack of mix...) for sure.

Hi! Why did you choose the hub from k5-8, and not the hub from k1-4, which does not have this slipper clutch initially. It should be lighter and cheaper. Also, the working area of the disks is larger by k1-4. But 5 springs instead of 6.
@BrockDavidson
@BrockDavidson 5 месяцев назад
5 springs dramatically limits the fine tunability of the static spring pressure. Backdating that many generations is also not legal in most racing organizations. Of course, you can do as you like., but pay special attention to the inherent oiling capabilities.

The 02 doesn't have that does it? Went from that to an 07 1k and the 07 I thought had some issues because at low speed I don't have the same throttle response in first.

@BrockDavidson
@BrockDavidson Год назад
There is a special shallow notch in the outer basket to allow the outermost fiber to be rotated one notch from all of the rest.

@prostreetgsxr Год назад
@@BrockDavidson ok thanks! In the past I don’t think I did that. Does it actually change anything?
@BrockDavidson
@BrockDavidson Год назад
It helps prevent the plates from sticking together due to capillary action, so oil can flow through properly when the clutch is pulled in, for smoother operation.
