The reason there isn't a 2WD Targa and there most likely will not be one in the future has to do with the different widths of the 991 body's in 2WD vs 4WD form. The 2WD being narrower would require a major redesign of the roof structure and some of the hardware that power the top needs extra room. Porsche even admitted that is the reason why there are actually 3 body styles in the 991 (2WD narrow, 4WD wide, and Turbo extra wide) is because the Turbo Cabriolet needed additional room for components such as intercoolers, rear wheel steer, and top mechanism. I'll admit that based on the fact that they have combined a 2WD and a wide body in the form of the GTS models that it is possible to eliminate the drive from the front axle but then that would completely defeat the point and exclusivity of the GTS models and even GTS Targa models are in fact 4WD wide body cars, not 2WD.

I saw Kumo in the street and I was like "oh no! ", oh, just napping ;) Great review! I really enjoy all your thoughts on the car. That top is quite the parlor trick! I can understand why you can't be moving to raise or lower. I bet it stays pretty dry in the rain at highway speeds. Is there any weird buffering with the top down? Thanks for the great video! So, my husband is off to buy this car as I write this comment... He left me with this link to help persuade me that his quest today will land him on his perfect Porsche... This being Porsche number 8 (I think, maybe more), I certainly hope that he is right. Your review was quite persuasive and your enthusiasm is addictive. Now, I can say that I am looking forward to his arrival home today. Perhaps it is your genuinely felt honesty, your impressively detailed knowledge, and maybe even forcing me to see the car itself as an engineering masterpiece. It could be that you helped me to justify this purchase on more personal points such as the idea of getting a hand-me-down Macan or the fact that our last child is off to college in 6 months making it my turn for a mid-life crisis. Either way, thank you for your review as I now think I finally get why this car is such a draw... Or perhaps it was your dog that in the end persuaded me to trust you and by extension my husband's odd attraction to this car.

Awesome video presentation ! I love the silver on red colour combination which is actually the old German racing classic colors. The roof is awesome and I love the colour combination : the red sneakers, the red brake callipers and the red roof. Very cool. The other star of course is your dog ! He is an awesome supplement, and the true star of the show. On a test drive I actually found this Targa to be quite a bit noisier than driving the 911 Cabriolet with the top down. A trade off that one should consider when looking at this dream car as a long-term option

I just had to watch this review once again! I'm really getting smitten with this car! This exact color combo as well! My only change to this 911 targa would be the wheels and the exhaust system. I prefer the standard exhaust system and as far as the wheels go? The wider 5 spoke design would make this the perfect sports car for me!

Great evaluation. Would love to have a better understanding what the benefit of an “s” versus base model. I get the added features but in daily driving, how is the S better ??? Is it worth the extra money for an S or am I better adding 4ws, or another feature for the money. Thanks for the superb work you do.

Love your videos. Also your dog. I had an American Eskimo in a previous life and he was beautiful. On to cars. I like the Targa and would go for it, except not the red roof, would do silver. I have a 2007 GT3RS, which I am keeping forever. My daily is a 2017 718 Cayman S, which I just love.

I had a black 06 elise. Seeing yours reminds me of it. A Porsche that would make me want to drain my account would be one that doesn't quite exist. A 991.2 C2 coupe but instead of a 7spd manual, would be a 6 spd (Less likely to mess up 2-3 or 4-5 shift) manual with shorter 1st and 2nd gear ratios so that I would have to shift more in the city. 991.2 due to the torque and C2 not C2S so I can wring it out on the streets without hitting triple digits. And would be nice to have the larger red calipers from the C2S. Oh and an old fashioned hand brake, not the electronic e-brake.

I've been obsessed with these Targas for a while now. Graphite blue w/ polished sport wheels & the darker roll hoop (& the stick shift of course) would be my dream spec on it. I do wish they would've kept the NA engine though.

i agree, i would drain my bank about too for this car.... even though as a 911 fan my favourite 911 is a C2 GTS coupe with wide body, but the targa top make this car so unique overtime i see one i keep looking at it and it makes me forget that its 4 wheel drive. i wish they do this car with wide body and rear wheel drive only on S trim. good episode though!!

love the Targa in silver best. have owned 951 (944T); currently own 928S4 and 997.1 4S cabriolet and family car 986 Boxster S. prefer the 997 styling and interior controls over the pretty but excessive buttons/ touch panels found in 991s. still love driving the 928S4 and the Boxster (slower) is so light and toss able. also enjoy driving my "other" car Toyota Mr2 Spyder for handling light weight and much less "over weight" than the 997 - love your Lotus version.

My guess is lack of 2wd targa is to keep its balance maybe? Most of the extra weight on the targa is going to be towards the rear. Most of the extra weight on the 4wd is at the front.

Targa or Turbo. I am pretty much addicted to a) The targa roof b) The extra intakes turbos have Manual! It is not about comfort, drive a freaking manual, they even do rev adjust for you these days. If I did not have to choose a 911 I would probably go for a Cayman S. I am a 1,88m guy who loves 2-seaters.

Love your show btw, found it when I was researching the S3 and was hooked every since. In answer to you question I would go Cayman everyday and twice on Sunday but if I had to pick a 911 it would be the Carrera 4S. I'd love a turbo but I think its a bit overboard and I'd love a GT3 but I wouldn't track it enough to justify the potential so in the world of a daily driver 911 I'd go for the 4S. I wouldn't settle on a non-S and I personally prefer AWD cars. What do you think of the Targa GTS versus this review?

Targa is my favorite 911 as well. I almost bought one but I just couldn't pass on the power of the TT. It would be nice if they would do a turbo targa. I'm sure they could figure out how to put the turbo spoiler on the targas rear end.

I've always loved the Targa design, glad they brought it back, the new 2017 has to be the best looking Porsche ever love the clean lines, If I were to design the next generation Targa, I would have a wider rear end, with a lower roofline, similar to the speedster, what a machine that would be.

Hey dude, love your videos (altho as mentioned prior, my God you do love the sound of your voice) my one complaint with not just you but all reviewers of this particular car is this: "you can't raise the roof while moving" - REALLY??? - Damn, if your time is so precious that you can not take 20 seconds to relax and raise the roof, perhaps you should just STAY HOME - Damn, it's not that big a freakin deal, chill folks!! So hell yeah, You are an excellent reviewer, but I do miss Mean Gene

Great review, audio got a touch overpowered by the engine noise on the rear GoPro. It is a really stunning looking car. It appears the front trunk capacity is pretty large, and it can hold a fairly large suitcase, do you happen to know car's cubic feet storage overall, around 11:22 is the rear storage area where Kuhmo is sitting above motor is that open to the interior cabin/rear seat area? Sorry for so many questions!

Hey Andrew! Can't say that I do. And to be honest with you, I really don't think that parcel shelf area is meant for storage. To get Kumo in there, we had to have the rear canopy completely open. Speaking of questions: Did you get the Aston or the Ferrari?

As of yet I have not made a decision, I have had the opportunity to test drive a 2012 California what a great car, I am going to try to test an Aston hopefully soon, with that I hope I can make a decision from there, I will tell you this you will have an open invitation to drive whichever car I finally get...as long as you promise to bring it back! Truthfully I still keep looking at all cars....thankfully my wife is very patient and I really need a much bigger garage! Thanks for the reply.i will keep you posted

I am in the process of Buying a 911and I've been a Lotus fan all my life. I love the 'less is more' and 'lighter is better' Chapman approach. I recently inherited a dog; a rather large dog 38 kg Retriever. And I take 2 1-month vacations to PEI from Montreal every year. So while I drool over the Boxter mid-engine layout the 911 offers a backseat, and with a rear window, comes a dog that can handle a 10+ hour drive from Montreal to PEI. So my dilemma is which 911. I have a Macan for the winter months, but which 911 has a window for my dog? I've measured his seated height to be about the same as my spouse--and she can fit in the rear seat with centimetres to spare. So right now I'm leaning to the 911 Cabriolet S. I'd like your thoughts. This is close to my perfect 911. Only if I could swap engines with the 911R and do with a RWD. Would still keep the DCT (I'm a sucker for these transmissions) and all the comfort goodies of this one.

I love your reviews but I'm not sure about your cinematography. Please can you stop cropping to zoom in, as you're only filming in 1080p, so when the crop is enlarged the video quality is severely degraded, also it can be quite distracting at some times. Lastly the wide angle lens you've been using to shoot the sides profile of the cars, seems to be quite severe, as it results in quite a lot of barrel distortion creating a sort of fish eye look, which does a disservice to the Targa's beautiful profile. Other than that, I love your reviews they're so in depth compared to others, also I love your dog :)

Hey Zac . . . Keen eye and thanks for the the feedback. There was only one case in this series of episodes where we had to go 'over 100%' to frame the shot properly - which I admit, degraded quality but we chose to make that trade off in post because it was necessary to help tell the story. And really, that is what it is all about. Does our gear help tell our story or stand in the way? That said, ALL of our episodes are shot in 4K with the final product exported out in 1080. We would LOVE to use very fancy cameras and gear as we have in the past, however after 7 years of doing this, sadly, we found that a. too much quality has no ROI and b. the economics of online video just do not support proper cinema gear and more importantly, the crew required to make it work. Furthermore, the additional work flow in post production also cannot be justified. As a film nerd and camera geek, would LOVE to be using the latest and greatest gear. But as you may have seen in our season opener, we used a beyond state of the art 360 3D experimental camera with a proper set of operators on set from both RU-vid and GoPro as well as their crack post team and the episode got virtually no traction. The same was the case when we started out back in the day with incredibly advanced gear and a large crew - which we have changed over the years. Granted, the democratization of camera technology has helped. That said, I believe you would agree that we produce a high quality product of which we are very proud but we still have to balance the realities of the economics of TV and streaming video today. Again, thanks for the feedback and for watching . . .

There is a standard amount of wind noise as you would have with other Targa roof cars. No better, no worse.

I have always liked the classic look of a 911 Targa, but I am not that big of a fan (weird, huh?). My drain the acct car is a GT3. I'm also a Lotus guy and I have it hardcore. I have owned an Esprit SE, an Esprit S4s and a Europa. The Europa is the one I kept the longest and I had many fun but embarrassingly slow laps around Rd Atlanta in that Europa. But she could sure take a turn.

I agree, it's the Targa for me too. Definitely in 4S guise, maybe GTS at a stretch. Sure, the Porsche fanboys will bitch & moan that it's not a 'true' performance 911, but I'm never gonna take one to a track & abuse it - & where I live, our road laws are so restrictive that I'd never be able to give a GT3 the proper flogging it deserves anyway - not without losing my license in 5 minutes flat. For a car that looks gorgeous as a boulevard cruiser but can also hold its own on a twisty back road, I think the Targa nails it.

I'll drain my bank account for 991.2 Turbo cabriolet (so beautiful..). The reason is if you want to get a well loaded carerra S cabriolet, you may already need to pay ~150k where another 35k will make you get Turbo and it's so much worth it. To me, there is no need to go turbo S for the extra power unless there is some other significant difference.

I'd consider an NA (the 3.8L 9A1, ideally with X51 PowerKit a la GTS), RWD, 6-speed manual (7's a bit rubbery) Targa ... *if* the targa was an old school manual removable targa top. Latches and all. Why? Porsche would make it as easy as possible, and it'd weigh a fair bit less than the robot-that-eats-its-hat version. Though that doesn't exist, which is why I have a 981 Boxster Spyder.

Drain my bank account? pre 1973 911 S model in bright orange or green. Sad part is that up until about 15 or 20 years ago, you could actually buy those for semi-reasonable prices. Drain my account and kill my bank-manager for it? 911 Carrera 2.7 of course. Wouldn't even have to be the super-light version.. :D 997 GT2 is in third place for me - if only because it was such a bonkers-looking car but actually quite docile to drive.
