It’s been two years since we summoned together the superpowers of the sportbike world (our last Superbike Shootout.) In that time the Aprilia RSV4 RR, Honda CBR1000RR, Kawasaki ZX-10R, and Suzuki GSX-R1000 have either been heavily revised or completely overhauled. These changes beg a reinspection into the pecking order of world’s premier street-legal superbikes.

man. this is such a great time to be a sportbike rider! i currently have an '08 R6 and will continue to be on it for a while, but what an exciting time to be in the market for a new 1000cc superbike. Each model is literally everything you could want it seems like!!!! SBK developers have really outdone themselves all-around!!!!!

R6 isn't going to get a revamped engine anytime soon..... We were lucky the R6 even saw an update. 600cc supersport class is dead. Only two companies making a yearly model for that class are kawi and Yamaha.

got a '10 zx-6r myself and have been looking to upgrade.. Looked at the RSV4 for a few years now, was really good to see multiple guys getting behind it here.. (was actually waiting for AUS to get the international colour scheme over the shitty colour scheme we've had for the last few years)

Dave East do some research before you pull the trigger for an aprilia. the engine has a problem with dropping valves and needing them adjusted every few thousand miles

Mine's fine with 1440p, but at 4K, video kept buffering while streaming (even though my ISP speed is 300 Mbps). Found out the problem lies with my PC - CPU too old, running at 100% every time I do 1440p and above. With the same ISP speed, I ran the same video on my newer Core i5 PC - and even 4K streamed flawlessly.

cruise control, heated grips, barbeque? On sportsbikes? Amazing. Can't wait for automatic steering, lane control, autopark with or without rider. For me only the Aprillia and Yamaha are the choices I'd have to make. If Ducati Panigale had been there it would have been 3.

The standard Blade doenst come with the "I´ve got some nice false neutrals for you"- autoblipper. But yeah, falling off your motorcycle at 120 mph because of a mechanical failure might change your opinion pretty quickly.

Guy Martin should learn to not lazy shift on a motorcycle then. Honda Racing Europe supplies the same spec Fireblade to WSBK riders and they are yet to complain about false neutrals on their respective gearboxes, electrical issues while trying to get the new Blade's electronics to work with WSBK's non factory ECU is their main issue because Honda Racing Europe is not assisted by HRC Japan.

Even though I am a cruiser guy now in my old age, the way you displayed THESE bikes and your "Layout" and editing was the best EVER and I don't think you missed a thing. I loved the shootout, guys. Also, I like how you kept it simple. It seems to me that picking between these bikes gets down to little details. They all look, sound and perform great. keep it simple for us normal working guys that commute and push our bikes as hard as we are willing to on the street. great test. thank you

Honda fanboy, but sat and test rode the 2017 GSXR and it was a perfect fit. I am waiting to decide until I ride the BMW S1000RR (Dreambike) the 2017 CBR1000RR honestly didn't do it for me :( and I am heartbroken to say that.

I can completely agree with you on that. Although 1 tooth down and 2 tooth up help a little.. compared to gsxr low end is pretty bad. You need to ring out that throttle to get the motor going.

I'm suprised how many ppl like the sound of the Italian bikes. Like they sound good, but the high pitched F1-like scream of the Honda, Kawa and Suzuki inline-4's I reckon are just the best despite being the most common.

Great review, I recently rode the Gixxer, BMW, R1, and 1000RR on track and have to say my favourite bike was the Honda for its feel but the BMW is just so friendly to an inexperienced 1000cc rider (like myself). The power of the Honda really surprised me, I had ridden the 09 fireblade and was expecting something just as tame, oh boy was I wrong, that Honda is a beast when you go full throttle.

Dan Bogardo agree..its the design of the bikes that allow the heat to transcend to the rider..barely any chassis and framework ..so all the heat escapes..as we know up..everyone complains..i say stop riding sportbikes..go get a goldwing..but I'm sure these clowns would complain it's too comfy and not have the motorcycle feel

Really enjoyed the shootout. And oddly enough my personal experience doing first rides on these bikes was very close. I'd pick the panigale first then the aprilia then the CBR :)

Honda only has 150 plus horsepower? I have the 2017 version as well but it says 189hp. Does it reduces so much hp when its measured at the rear wheel? Or am I missing something here?

Its crazy how they are all gushing about the Honda in the power department but its not even more powerful than the bike it replaces. 153 at the wheels is pretty much around what the old bike makes, and the other bikes are making 20-30hp at the wheels more. Hate how they give Honda so many passes in the motor department. Honda could change a spark plug and give the bike .05 more hp and they would all be raving about the changes Honda made to the engine.

The CBR (easily the lightest of the group) makes more power than all the four-cylinder bikes from 7000-8000 rpm, and more than all but the BMW from 7000-10,000, which are areas of the tach used far more often on the street than above 11,000 where the CBR falls off. An ECU reflash will gain 15 hp with the stock pipe. That said, a reflash will do about the same for all the Japanese bikes.

Actually go look up the figures of these bikes after they've been dyno'd with a slip on or full pipe. Honda detunes these bikes for emissions and EPA noise regs. With a pipe and tune the bike makes decent power and given how little it weighs compared to the competition that shows. Also keep in mind where the power is being made. You will have more power on a blade riding around on street than you ever would with the other bikes that make peak power and torque higher up in the power band. Just comes down to what kind of rider you are.

Lovely, I really appreciate the EBR in this pack too.. super :) I love the fact that you complain about the R1, yes it feels like an old style Ducati, like from 916-1198 bikes with its long reach to the handlebars/clipons. Even the Bwm feels a bit long to me to be fair.

Read their write-up. It's due to EPA regulations. The bike locks the throttle electronically at 82% after 10,800 rpm. Should be making 170 horses easily. Some of the other bikes are also affected.

Aprilia had demos at Americade (NY), and Laconia (NH). Will have demos at Thunder in the Valley (PA) this week as well. Otherwise, dealership should have demo offers as well.

EBR is holding up with the best out there. It is basically unchanged since it's release in 2014 and only had minor reliability improvements over the past 3 years, yet its going up against the big guys in the 2017 shootout. Happy to see it hold its own without the fancy cruise control. This bike knows what it was made for, to be a track weapon and it does it well - A PROUD EBR 1190RX owner

What about the 600s? You seem to shy away from shootouts, comparisons and reviews of the 600cc range motorcycles. In fact the only 600cc bike you've reviewed this year is the R6. Why is that? I think this class of super sport bikes is just as exciting as the liter bikes and there are new bikes out for this year! I'm interested in purchasing either the 2017 GSXR600 or CBR600RR and would love to see a comparison.
