The Alfa Romeo Giulia Quadrifoglio is one of the hottest sport sedans on the market right now, with a raucus, 505-HP twin-turbo V6, a taut, lightweight chassis, direct steering, and extroverted good looks. It's had some stumbles off the gate, mainly software related ones, but in this video, filmed in Northern California, we see if the driving experience outweighs the potential Italian car stereotypes.
Alfa Romeo USA Provided the vehicle, insurance, and a tank of fuel for this review.

Hi Everyone! In this video, at around the 10 minute mark, we learn about my unfamiliarity with This road, as I understeer across the double yellow line in a surprise, rapidly decreasing radius hairpin turn. This is a BIG fuck up from me and I apologize to the motorists I put in harm’s way with my irresponsible driving. Do not drive like I did there. Learn the road at a more reasonable pace. Again, I take responsibility for my MISTAKE and apologize to the viewers and citizens of the Area for disrespecting their road with my poor decisions. Thanks for watching, and I promise to do better.- MF

My dad sold me his GT-R at a significant discount so he could get one of these. He said it's a better driving experience and I couldn't believe it. He eventually got it and we took the Quadrifoglio for a drive and oh boy was I wrong, it's much better. My GT-R is awesome, but it's not as good as this car and way less practical, that should tell you all you need to know about the quality of the Alfa. It's just astounding.

I've owned my QV for about 6 months. He's spot on with the cons. On the flip side, this is an amazing performance vehicle which lets you quickly forget about the few quirks it has once you get inside and drive. It's unfortunate he didn't mention that the QV's come stock a carbon fiber roof, hood and drive shaft. Or the active aero front carbon splitter. If your concerned about mpg, the "A" mode shuts 3 cylinders off so you can get 35+ mpg. Really happy with the car.

I would take a Giulia Quadrifoglio over an M3 in a heartbeat. I don't even care about tiny reliability problems (which are a lot more frequent in the US models), it looks gorgeous, handling is amazingly and it's fast as hell. What a masterpiece of a car.
@nicholas5139
@nicholas5139 6 лет назад
It's also a different thing in the mix; like they are so fucking gorgeous. Every German, American, and Asian cars all look the same now from previous generations or they steal the safe and reserved looks from each other, but Alfa separates itself with a bold distinctive look.

Cloroxb3ach55 tm: Agree. I have driven the M3/M4 and a Giulia QV (Auto). And yes, the BMW's are absolutely spectacular cars which you can have a lot of fun, well built (although alfa interior quality is also very good and i prefer the design of it, to the M's), and reliable. But to me after spending a few weeks with them, they became boring. The Alfa in other hand looks gorgeous (in Rosso Competizione, it's jaw dropping beautiful), incredible handling, more comfortable, not so reliable (but it's is a heck a lot more reliable than previous generations of alfas, and the problems are easy to resolve), the noise fo the V6 is simply awesome(reminds me of the old Busso V6's) and as I said in the 1st post, it's crazy fast. It may have 510hp but it feels it has more than that.
@jasonargyropoulos2674
@jasonargyropoulos2674 6 лет назад
Its beautiful, different and fast, I see the justification. It would have to be at the very least a 2nd car for me though. I don't like the idea of a potentially unreliable car that I will rely on every day to get places and I think that defeats the purpose of this segment of cars.
@skulltrailRFL
@skulltrailRFL 6 лет назад
ChaosphereIX: That's a good point. But in my imo, I did prefer the Auto transmission, more than the manual on different situations, on track, highway even on city (although it's a bit clunky sometimes like matt said in the video, but after you get used to it, and get around the clunkiness, it's fine) But even so, having a manual gearbox in a car like this where in the other rival brands the auto mandatory, is just fantastic.

Being an Alfa Giulia Quad owner for a year i can say this review is extremely poorly done. ur just giving wrong information again and again because you never understood or did research on this car. This car is Silky smooth in traffic. you need to put it in Normal driving mode. Even Dynamic is very smooth. Only RACE mode is jerk and its because of the throttle sensitivity and its for the track not for regular road driving. It gives you 44 mpg on the highway on cruise mode and is faster than many cars. It is not clunky and does not give that gunking sounds you are talking about. I have turned the front vehicle maximum to the right and left. I didnt notice any resistance. You should do ur home work before doing a review.

@Grey.Wyman28
@Grey.Wyman28 5 лет назад
I own an '18 QV and agree with you. I've never driven a car that is so different in the different modes. In A and D, it's very smooth.......but the brakes, regardless of whether you get CCBs or steel, require some getting used to. After a few days I was used to them and could drive the car smoothly. The issue I found was getting in my wife's XC90 after driving my QV; I wasn't smooth on the brakes in her car... D and R mode, I find the car to be very high strung and very sensitive to any input, as it should be. I think the MMI interface is great - it's not overdone like most cars and I like the simplicity of the interior. Knobs and buttons for everything is a nice change of pace nowadays. I use CarPlay the majority of the time. When I use Google Maps or Apple Maps, it talks to me - not sure why Matt had issues with that too. I've had 2 Lotuses, a 991S, and a number of BMW M cars over the years - this car is in the top 3 of anything I've owned.

The biggest issue with carbon ceramics isn't the replacement cost but that they really suck in a daily driven car. You just can't generate enough heat in them off the track to get them up to operating temperature so they screech like crazy and don't even perform as well as steelies. I know multiple GT3 owners who took off the carbon ceramics and put on steel rotors because they couldn't deal with the noise and heat issues, not to mention not wanting to drop $15k on a new set of CC rotors.

The steering issue up front is the Ackerman amount. It's an alignment setting that isn't ajustable. It's a design of how much each of the wheels can turn in high lock scenarios where the wheels are traveling around 2 different radii. It causes that skipping differential feeling you described.

i have experienced similar Ackerman issues on Volvo 740/940. (front engine, rear wheel drive) It happens less on new warm tires because the thread absorbs it. But when the tires are close to worn out and cold it'll manifest itself quite noticeably. Cool road btw. Nice for motorcycling.

A couple of notes. I have had my 2018 Guilia Quad since 3/5 It is now 4/22 so a month and a half and have 4,500 miles on it. So I will offer some real lifed experience here. 1 Directions Through Sound System: if you want your directions to come through the sound system, use Android Auto or its Apple equivalent. Works great, displays Google maps on the dash system which I love for the traffic. 2 Crunchy Tire Sound: This startled me fieesg time I hwwa rd it. This is just cold tires. Once they are up to temp or the weather warms up, it goes away. 3 Catchy Brakes at 0 - 5 mph: Took me about a week to learn the low end of the brake system. I have no problems in stop and go traffic. Loved the review but I have to admit I am surprised that you took the time to learn what IBS stood for and not DNA. Odd.

I drive these cars everyday, and while the brakes are extremely touchy they are not as bad as people make them out to be in traffic. If you apply consistent pressure then yes you will screech to a fault, you have to apply a normal amount of pressure then let off just before you stop and then reapply pressure again. Hard to explain and also difficult to execute, but that's what makes it an Alfa I guess.

I would get the *Stelvio* Quadrifoglio. Just a bit longer and wider inside than the Giulia Quadrifoglio; my friends and I are 6'4", 6'2" and 6'4" respectively; the 6'4" friends owns a Giulia, and I can sit in the rear seat behind the 6'2" friend in the front passenger seat and fit without my knees touching, so just a touch bigger in every dimension would be literally perfect even for big guys like us. These cars are lightweight even with AWD, and the AWD actually makes the Stelvio QF significantly faster than the Giulia QF while retaining a RWD bias; 3.3s versus 3.6s both tested by Car and Driver. The Giulia DOES have amazing steering! You could steer around an ant at 60mph! The Stevlio apparently has the exact same steering feeling as the Giulia as well, from literally everyone I listen to here on YT. Alfa have made two amazing cars!!!!

To be honest, the steel brakes in mine are snatchy at low speed as well. You learn to live with it and it doesn't seem as bad as the ceramic equipped cars but it still takes getting used to. Often much smoother to double tap the brakes like a mouse button. No idea why it works better, it just does.

Matt the front wheel issue you're talking about is well known with the corvette (widebody C6's C7Z's etc) because the front tires are so wide, 285's, that in full lock the tires "skip" along the pavement, which is the feeling you probably felt. Although i highly doubt alfa romeo put 285's on the fronts of that car. Cold weather makes this issue more apparent. During summer i don't have this problem with my C7Z.

The braking issue isn't even unique to the carbon ceramics, both the regular Giulia and Stelvio I had for a week did the same exact thing with grabby brakes at low speed and being smooth was definitely challenging. The only thing I didn't like about them driving wise. The brake by wire definitely needs some work, or thrown out.

That full lock turn issue is called tire scrub. Many cars suffer from it especially Maserati's and it's really nothing more than a slight annoyance. Different tire compounds can help alleviate this.

The torque converter will disconnect when idling in N or A mode. Staying connected in D & R mode is a "feature". Braking can be a bit janky for sure (steel pads here), but you eventually learn to modulate smoothly with some practice. Awesome car!

Great review. I bought a 2020 Giulia QV about six months ago. I have the steel brakes...had I not watched a bunch of RU-vid reviews beforehand, I wouldn't have noticed any issue. Even knowing about it ahead of time, it only took a few days to get used to. Now I never notice it. Regarding the akerman/steering clunks. Mine only does it after a cold start. Once the car is warm the issue disappears completely. Love the car! Only about 10k mi on it now but no reliability issues (fingers crossed). Hopefully they fixed some of the gremlins w the 2019 refresh.

To Alfa's credit, they've been refining the car and buttoning up the glitches. No more reflashes, and niggling issues sorted. It's still a Ferrari engine, and you're going to have to maintain it, but you're looking at supercar speed in a comfortable 4 Door sedan. For well under $100k.

this guy is trying so hard 'not to like' the car! For Gods sake you are driving a car that was engineered by the same guy that engineered the Ferrari 458, its got carbon fibre prop-shaft, carbon fibre bonnet and has beaten the time lap of its main rival (the m4) by 20 seconds! You make an 18 minute video and you spend 7 minutes of it bashing on about how you dont like the brakes! He barely mentions anything about the engine which is a proper masterpiece. By positioning the turbos in the "V" the managed to eliminate turbo lag making it feel as close to a natural aspirated engine as possible!

It's tire pop. Happens with a tight turn on cold tires. The Caddy CTS-V did this and when they first came out, people thought there was a problem with the car. Now it's in the manual that if you hear this noise it's not a flaw. It's also the same with Corvettes. There's a page in the manual that warns about tire pop. These are very low profile tires with very hard sidewalls. The colder the tire, the more it will happen.

I've had mine for a few weeks and never noticed anything bad about the brakes. Frankly mine has the standard steel brakes, but I actually love how responsive they are and it took whole 20 minutes to get used to them. Press them lightly and it's not going to be jerky. That said, I've never driven the car with carbon ceramics. Also I'm not sure why you'd need them on a car like this, steel brakes are more than enough.

One thing you can rarely say about Alfas....that they aren’t very sexy or styled very attractively. Although this can be at the expense of other features but those of us that like to drive cars that are molto bene, drip sexiness and certainly won’t hurt your style (unless you dress like a schlub, in which case you need to apologize to the car). Great car. Great video visuals. Thanks for your time. I remember the offset driving position of the Alfasud plus rust that turned the car into a fred flintstone car in 6 months. That car in 1750cc overhead cam version would rev to the skies and throw you around corners like they were straight. Just don't leave it out in the rain as it was prone to leak and then the engine would refuse to start. Ahh happy days, when driving a Alfa was a different experience each time you took it down the road. This new car is in a different league. Forgive its faults and glory in its accomplishments and you will be rewarded each time you drive it. The word character was invented for this car and that will grow with you in time. German super saloons are clinical and do what they do with precision. However it is my belief that it would be the Alfa you would look forward to jumping into for a Sunday morning blast. Miles of smiles. Can't buy them in a store.
