2018+ Ford F150 Rattle on Deceleration Noise

Fix Them Things!

I am asking for help in this video to find out if anyone has a solution for the "Rattle on Deceleration" noise. I have been wanting to do a video on this subject for a long time. I have seen only one person get a buy back for this issue everyone else is stuck with it. I know 5 people personally that have this same noise. I have been very patient with the Ford dealers and Ford Factory service. Ford should stand behind their product and fix these issues. I did end up contacting a Lemon Lawyer. Please comment about any fixes for this problem.
Check out Ford Bossman’s video explaining 18-20 are crap engines: www.tiktok.com/t/ZTRFjd8uh/?k=1
Here is a short clip from a live saying that it can’t be fixed:

I bought a 2020 with 60k miles, and added the extended warranty to 120k miles. I noticed shortly after buying that it made this noise, and when I got the oil changed the first time at a drive-thru oil place they said it was about two quarts low. When I had the dealership look at it, they said the noise is normal, they didn't see any oil leaking, and don't worry about it unless I actually get a check engine light or oil warning. After doing a whole bunch of digging online, that sounds about right. Not that it's an acceptable answer, but Ford doesn't have a fix for it, and I'm a single guy with no backup vehicle (main reason I got the extended warranty) so I can't afford to be chasing these issues with no solution when the truck actually runs fine. A year later I'm at 77k miles and no problems, just annoying noises. My repair plan is to trade it in around 110k just in case. Also saw your comment on another reply about the class action. Let's hope something comes of that. I've never been part of one that was even worth going through the trouble for.

The only way to fix the oil consumption is to reline the cylinders with metal sleeves. Mine has no oil on dip stick after 5000 miles. They say normal. 😮

Hearing that rattle made my eye start twitching again. I ended up lemon lawing my 2018 f150 w less than 20K. Depending on the state you're in, once it has been at the dealer a certain amount of time they have to lemon law it once you say to start the process. I was in CA. Before that they did all the things you see in the comments; reflash, replaced all the VCT parts, chains/tensioners even went so far as replacing the heads. They couldn't fix it. I ended up lemon lawing it for the oil consumption (separate issue from the rattle). I was so upset with ford when they gave me the longer dipstick I told them to get bent, start the lemon law process. At that point they had the truck for over 2 months (total, not at once) I personally suspect it is a restrictive oil path in the block on the way to the chain tensioners. This is would explain why it happens when cold, as they aren't able to pump up to keep the chain from slapping. Seeing how they would not stand behind their product, and kept gaslighting me (telling me these were normal issues), I will never buy another ford. This was my 6th ford. My Toyota has given me zero issues.
@fixthemthings
@fixthemthings 2 года назад
Sounds logical about the oil passage idea. I thought my oil consumption was fixed. Well, I checked the other day and it was below the low line again at 5000 miles. The longer dipstick didn’t fix it. LOL. I have a lifetime warranty and am hoping it will work when I need it. I doubt it but hope it does.

Had this on the 2019 Mustang GT I own. So it's a sticking solenoid on the exhaust side for me. They replaced these under warranty as well. So, it was wonderful to get this fixed. Once this was fixed, some of my coasting shifts and overall application of power were much different. The A10 feels much smoother and my take offs are better.

Just bought a 1 owner 2018 f150 w/V8 and 48k. The prior owner drove it and changed the oil…that’s it. Now I’m stuck with everything you and others are seeing and hearing. Thank goodness I bought the Ford ‘Premium Care’ extended warranty. The truck has been at the dealership for a week for the ‘rattle on decel’. The PCM reflash did not fix the problem and actually made it worse; now they are ‘looking at’ the VCT’s as the ‘possible’ problem. Fingers crossed! I recommend you watch RU-vidr/mechanic “Ford Boss Me”, he did a great video of his diagnosis and repair of a VCT. Thanks for the video! 5/03/22 update: this follow-up is late, but follows Ford’s newer response to the issue. Dealership says ‘the sound [issue] is normal in similar/like vehicles’. I suspect the decision will haunt Ford.

Sorry you got the same problem. Keep me informed if they fix it. Mine is still under warranty. I linked fordbossman’s video in my comments when I made this video. He was the one referring to the VCT exhaust solenoid. I think there was a bad batch of engines with bad oil passages to the top of the engine. Mine is eating oil again. Thinking the plasma sprayed cylinders walls are wearing out fast.

My 2018 5.0 just hit 90k miles and has all the noises. But being a aluminum dohc engine with high tech systems, I assume it would make plenty of noise. Ive delt with the rattle the entire life of the truck and nothing has happened so far except being annoying. The truck runs like a bat out of hell with no mechanical problems. It does use 1qt of oil every 4K miles but I change it around that time anyway. So far happy with the truck and hopefully you will have the same experience.

Sounds good. I have 55k on mine but still eating oil. My sister has the same truck with 95k and had the transmission replaced. Luckily she has the same lifetime warranty I do and it was covered. So now I know that the aftermarket warranty does work. I was worried there would be something like not changing an air filter at 30k or something like that would void the warranty. She had all maintenance done at Ford. I like my truck I just don’t think it will be reliable later on. Hopefully my warranty will work.

Had same issues with my 2019. I had oil consumption and the rattle on decel issues as well. They did the TSB with the re-programming and longer dipstick. It was still using 2-2.5 qts every 3K. They looked into the cylinders with a borescope after sitting all night and saw oil in 3 of the cylinders. Ford wanted them to replace the heads, but parts were 2 months out so they replaced the engine at 15k miles. The new engine doesn't use oil, but it has the rattle on decel just like the original engine did. Mine only rattles when it is cold after sitting a long time or overnight. Worse here in MN winter, but as soon as the temp hits about 135-140 it goes away for me.

I have the exact same problem they reprogrammed something so oil not getting sucked out of the engine and changed the oil . They told me the rattling noise was gone and was due to the oil being low !! The engine has had that noise from day one I bought the truck brand new . Anyway the next morning the engine still has the rattle so I take it back the service manager brings out one of his Technicians and he says that is perfectly normal not to worry about it. My neighbour has a 2019 5 Ltr and his has the same noise !!

The rattle has actually gone down in volume now. Still there and annoying though. The parts must finally be wearing out. I have a lifetime power train warranty so I hope it works when I need it. I talked to a top ford mechanic about this issue yesterday. He said the 18-19s all do it after the first oil change. Nothing can be done about it. That was when mine started. They don’t have the issue in 21-22s. 20s are questionable. The mechanic sold his and bought a Gen 2 truck 2016 instead.

@@fixthemthings so what exactly is making that noise?
@fixthemthings
@fixthemthings 2 года назад
@@chuckwalla325 the exhaust VCT solenoids. It only happens when in drive and engine cold. Try it in park or neutral. It won’t happen. It’s bad FORD programming. I have heard some people get rid of it only by a custom tune. Personally, I think the Gen3 engine is crap with the plasma sprayed cylinder walls. I wish I would have bought a gen2 2015-2017 model instead. They have sleeved cylinder walls. I don’t think these engines will last even with 5000 mile oil changes. Does your engine sound like a diesel for the first 30 seconds after starting then smooth out? It takes that long for the oil to get to the top of the engine. That is not good. You can try pushing your gas pedal all the way down and start the truck and keep starting it for about 10 seconds then let off the gas and let it start. That pumps the oil up before starting. It keeps mine from being so loud but it is a pain in the ass. I have heard that they also may have had some bad castings with small oil passages. Not positive about that but have heard that.

My 2018 is doing the same thing. They replaced the VVT solenoid and that fixed the issue for about a month then it came back. They are gonna replace the actuators now. But ford rep they talked to when trying to figure out the issue just told them “that’s the nature of the beast. Aka the engine just has that crappy sounds and too bad. Crazy to think they sell these 50k+ trucks and are ok with it sounding that bad.

My 2017 3.5L eco boost has the same thing. They did the PCM. No luck, they replaced all the solenoids and phasers, no luck. They replaced the phasers again and no luck but also found some scoring in the cylinder head so replaced that too. So I basically got a new engine from the pistons up and it still makes the rattle. I baby my truck and run only synthetic oil every 8000km or sooner. From what I’ve read people have driven 100,000 and even up to 250,000km with no other issues other than the rattle. So maybe it’s just an annoying engine noise. I’ve thrown my hands up and will just drive it like normal and try to ignore the sound.

And I hate dealerships telling us everything is fine. The fact is that warrantees do not pay the mechanics correctly. So they have every incentive to do the bear minimum and send you on your way. So we say contact ford directly, and push for replace cams. How would one do this? I feel like ford telling us this is "normal operation". I think a class action lawsuit is in order. If you have extended warranty, fight tooth and nail with Ford, they know about this issue and they can’t fix it. The reason they don’t want to fix it. Is they have to spend money but you spent money if you have a contract extended contract here’s a thing keep fighting tooth and nail like it’s your life don’t give up because they want you to give up so they don’t have to spend the money, if they keep pushing you and you just say forget it, they won the battle and they don’t have to spend no money and you can still got the problem. Look up online about this issue. There’s a quite a few things that it’s happening with that motor the cams were too loose, there was a re-program there was a recall there was quite a bit of stuff, so just look it up and you’ll see what I’m talking about. If you give up they won the battle. They don’t have to spend no money and you still have the problem, and if you’ve had it back more than three times for the same thing, it could fall under the lemon law so don’t give up that’s what they want

I feel your pain. I had a 2018 5.0 as well and it also did the deceleration rattle. It also made a loud pinging noise under load at low rpm with 87 octane. It got a little better when I switched to 91 octane but still did it. They did the TSB bulletin reflash for the rattle but all that did was retard the timing. It caused the transmission to feel more sluggish as it kept trying to shift super early at low RPMs. Best thing I did was get rid of it. I ended up getting a nissan titan 5.6. Best decision I made. The 7 speed feels a lot more responsive. It doesn't skip gears like the Ford where it has a 10 speed but always skips 2nd and 4th gear. Titan has no rattle or noise. Feels great to be headache free. I hope this helps but there are some videos about priming the engine before starting to increase oil pressure. @@j.w.presents9552 the truck itself is great. The powertrain sucks. I’m eating oil and rattle is loud. 5000 mile and oil barely touches the dipstick. Told me that was normal. I have had multiple issue with my 2018 f150 5.0, ford is consistent in saying it's normal for your motor to knock and your transmittion to chatter. Obviously anyone with decent intelligence knows that mechanical equipment is engineered to run smooth. if a part is creating an odd noise then that part is not functioning as intended and causing excess wear on said part and other systems said part is contributing to. @@fixthemthings I went a different route. I did not use a lawyer, but went through ford's own buy back program, it saves them from having to resell a car as a "lemon" and takes the lawyer (and their fees) out of the equation. Ford will be more willing to work with you using this route. Because you noticed the low oil level at 5k, your "usage fees" should not consider any miles since that point onward, Even still, Ford is sheisty AF, so watch as many videos as you can on their buy back program. The oil consumption in particular is more damaging to the longevity of a motor than people may realize. Even though it may not be caused by a poor piston/ring/cylinder fit, the burned oil is very bad for catalytic converters, dramatically shortening their life. Also, if the oil vapor is coming from the intake side of things, this will lead to deposits on the intake valves, hurting MPG and HP. The techs know this, but will play stupid because they know this wont be a problem until after the warranty is up. I got almost all my money back, and was so bitter with how they handled it I will never buy another Ford again.

I said can we send request and I don't mind waiting until February 23'. He said no problem we are going to place an order and keep you posted. I need a new engine. I said OK. Can we order it? They said that's why we have bad news. Ford doesn't make this engines anymore!!! I said wait! You are telling me that now I am stuck with $70K truck and can't even fix it? The said just try to sell it before the engine fails. I said NO. I will not give it to someone else knowing that there is a potential issue down the road. I called state attorney and told them what happened. They advised me to contact Ford directly. If the Ford doesn't do anything I should hire attorney. I called Ford and create a case with them. They said we will try to find a "3rd party" engine if necessary. They contacted all of my dealers and they confirmed that this engine is not going to be made anymore. They transfer me to Ford customer relationship services. I spoke to them and told them I need this fixed or I need new truck and if I have to hire attorney I will do so. I told them that this is something that car manufacturer should either fix or give you a new truck. Simply take mine back and claim it as loss or do whatever you have to do. Customers should not be dealing with the issue your engineering team created at the first place. And I don't want to lose $70000. I am still under the warranty and will push as much as I can to get this solved. If this was Europe and Mercedes have this amount of people complaining they would have to recall all of this 5.0 models and replace them free of charge or give us new trucks. And another thing too they have an oil problem. I'm sure you know all about that too. But I always never fill my oil up to where they say to put it. I put it low when I fill it up. Start It. Let it run and if it's passed the first line. I'll fill it only up to that line because when you give it. Gas that heavy on the gas it pushes through and it goes back through the engine to be burned off. So there's no reason to put that extra bit of oil. Your engine's gonna be lubricated. You don't have to fill it up that dip.Stick to the second line.The first line is fine because when it warms up, it goes to halfway to the dipstick.And that's fine when it's warm.So the first line, my opinion is fine to fill the oil up to that.Once you change all the oil run it let it cool down and have a look at it

When I took it back again they told me it was normal (either their tech didn't listen at all the first two times or he doesn't know how to fix it, I'm guessing the latter). The only success for the issue I have heard is in link above. I have seen guys say this fix works and others don't. The exhaust solenoid on the drivers side of my truck does shutter just like in the video but the dealer didn't seem to listen to my suggestion. The second I added a little over a quart in between to keep it below min dipstick level. I had an oil consumption test done after they reflashed it and it passed and also lost less than first two oil changes. My last oil change was right at the min level with no oil added. They kept doing that to me and I gave them the code generating what needed to be done this? I bought it up from them. I didn't even want to trade it in. It's AV. A Coyote. And they just kept reset it. And I said listen I want it fixed now and I put a recorder under there to listen to the rattling and that going on. So they said they're gonna fix it. I marked them bowl tonight for a translucent thing for a glow and I pit hidden cameras under there. I got sick of them lying to them. Me and I live in Canada and I recorded it. They did none of the work and I said that's it. You guys can do the good work. I showed them the dawn area glowing. I asked to see the old parts which they said they already threw out. And I said listen to see those poke holes in there. I recorded it that if the work was. Didn't be done and then the manager killed out after he just said. Hold on to talk to the manager. And I said I don't care who's idea was it? Was it the manager's or yours? Because listen and aint changing now. You guys aren't gonna do it now because I'm not trusting. You guys with me not around that you might really put some sand or something in my engine and down the road. It's all f***** u* And I have issues with 4 right now. Like I'm literally having them fired. And I'm suing them for lying and that because they sent me emails and stuff. There and for me to pay off. I've really worried about it, but it was like A. A transaction they charge you for so yeah it turned out good for on my end but not on the end so yeah

No that is not normal. I have a buddy that’s got a 2018 F150 and he went to the same problems you did he had it back. Several times they done a reprogram they put new cams in a new lifters still have the same problem. Basically they come out with a update of the cams and lifters and it Remy his problem, and you’re basically having the same problem he was in after Ford got done with it the truck was back to normal had more power and extremely quiet so you need to fight with Ford about this. There is a update on cams and lifters they can fix the problem it is not normal fight. Do you have documentation fight tooth and nail They know about this problem and there is a fix for it. And yes he had transmission issues and they had to put a 2022 transmission in his truck. It was literally destroyed and this was all done under the factory warranty. And don’t let them pull this bullshit. Put the cam phasers in because that won’t fix a problem. It’s not a cell noise it’s not a vacuum solenoid. It’s the cams cams are too small. They know about this problem. Don’t talk to the dealerships, call Ford motor company.

You see how you say within the shift in some other things. Because that's Illinois is f***** If you unplug it like I'm saying I'll leave it in a certain mode. But the other side will still act normal to control the other side both v. C. T's are just on one side to the other. You'll see a power difference in everything. Unplugged.

I'm telling you unplugged the exhaust one. On just the one side and you'll find that. You may get a little bit less mileage, but you won't and use high oxygen. If you can are a 85, don't use 85 in a wintertime. Not good, because you'll get a lot of water in your oil from bypass the cylinders. And you'll get like junk in there. And I'll just use a high-octane. I find because it's 121 compression. I find I get More mileage 2 out of Higher octane. And it's better to spend that extra $25 to $30 on a tank. But I'm telling you unplug it and you'll see what I'm talking about. Just think of it, if there's no cold coming up right? So you'll never know if it's really wrecked but it'll say check engine when you unplug it, but if you think of it, what if that broke down down the road and you're driving like that? You didn't know it aint going to really wreck your engine. Just think of it if that was a problem they would say check engine light like ASAP. Don't drive your truck no more to the 2. Of the dealership to get a check because the engine will blow up. It won't happen. They don't make the engines like that. They just make these VC t's for fuel consumption.Run your engine a little bit better stuff like that.I can see the VCT ones for like oil in that, but it's the exhaust one.All right please do that
