Umbrace Titan yeah I have a 2017 and love mine. Threw some big wheels and tires on it and lifted it and it’s awesome. Haven’t upgraded anything else and still stock suspension but still a great off road vehicle to have fun in yet still good for an everyday suv, it’s still smooth and quiet on the road, just like the trd Offroad and TRD Pro, I think Toyota did a great job balancing between driving on the road everyday during the week and being off road capable on the weekends which Toyota said was their main goal.

Great review! I love that you appreciate the 4Runner for it's solid old-school utility and solid build quality. I bought a 2015 Limited and knew going in I was sacrificing some of the modern technology (no adaptive cruise, no 360 degree camera, no cross-traffic warning, no 6-spd transmission), but I did love the high upright commanding seat position, solid build quality, and masculine styling. The Limited has some nice features above the OffRoad (different front end fascia, ambient interior lighting, heated/cooled seats, 2 seat memory banks, controls on the hatch to raise/lower the window and lock/unlock doors, true keyless entry and pushbutton Start/Stop, premium 550 watt sound w/subwoofer, on the fly dial for 4L/4H, etc.) I get about 19.2 mpg with mixed city/hwy driving.

Thank you! As an owner of a 2015 Trail Edition 4Runner, I thought this review of the 2018 TRD Off Road was one of the better ones I've seen in terms of thoroughness and accuracy. I think it fairly brings up the 4Runner's strengths and weaknesses. I hope this is helpful for those considering the current 5th Gen 4Runners in this trim level. I certainly love my 4Runner!

Mike French Agree but that's because other manufacturers are no longer in the class. Compared to the 2nd and 3rd generation models the newer model is horrible. Wish I never sold my 1995 and bought a 2015. Hate the 5th generation, incapable and unreliable in comparison.
@blackdiamond5015
@blackdiamond5015 4 года назад
@fiendin281 My 95 2nd gen was stock had amazing ground clearance, completely off road worthy, and was most of all reliable. My 5th gen is also stock. To do moderate off road it would need to be lifted, horrible ground clearance, sheet metal skid plates replaced as they are easily damaged, and most of all the street tires need to be replaced. Nothing about this family station wagon is ready for off road right off the lot. In the 18 years I drove my 2nd gen I bottomed out once where the 5th gen has bottomed out 7or 8 times in four years on trails that would have been nothing for my 2nd gen. The overall quality of the 5th gen is poor. Paint is easily damaged or scraped off to bare metal, electronics horrible, have replaced the infotainment system 3 times, dash squeaks, driver's side front wheel well keeps coming undone and making noise, moon roof had to be rebuilt due to squeaks, heater and A/C grossly undersized and do a horrible job on extreme days, headlights cast horizontal shadow in front of car, difficult to see things like animals in front of car, voice recognition system rarely works right, monitor either doesn't work frequently or only half the screen comes on, and the list goes on. In snowy conditions the car is easily high centered or stuck. Little to no difference between 2 wheel and 4 wheel drive. The off road systems on the Trails/Off Road Pro are nothing but lame gimics you don't need if you have ever driven a real off road vehicle. Have coworkers having many of the same issues and share same opinions. The car is known by my friends as "Captain Crap" and that precisely what it is.

I've ordered a 2021 TRD Off-Road Premium, which, because of today's microchip shortage issues, means I won't take delivery until July. So in my spare time I obsessively watch and all reviews of the TRD Off-Road 4Runner. And I have to say--even though your review was of an earlier model--you are the best RU-vid reviewer I've watched. First I was looking at Subaru. Then at the Tacoma 4x4. Now I'm here. Once you get over the sticker price, wow, this 4 Runner TRD Off Road has exactly what I need. Great desert explorer that's also good on the highway. Good for towing. Comfortable. Plug in the coffee pot with the rear gate slide out in the back for some breakfast. Looks like I could sleep in the back too. Impressive.

Bought my 4Runner SR5 in July 2017 and I love it! Had a Tacoma 2012 and traded it for 2017 Tacoma which didn't have the 4.0 engine my previous Tacoma had and was disgustingly disappointed. Perhaps others may like the new 3.5 engine in the 2017 Tacoma, but I didn't. It used up gas to get the pick up I was used to and took it back on the 8th day of ownership and traded it for a 2017 4Runner and I am now so happy. The gas it uses is worth the power I want, but its really not much as I do most of my driving within a smaller area of my city. I should also mention that I drove a 1997 Camry for 16yrs and all I can declare is that I am thoroughly content with my final choice and overall I will always choose Toyota.
@michaelaherrejon8398
@michaelaherrejon8398 6 лет назад
I honestly just love the smooth drive, solidness, power, height, interior spaciousness and overall true 'SUV' rugged engineering. It's just awesome to drive and I have no regrets in purchasing this beauty. It doesn't have side steps or running boards. It doesn't have a sun roof. It doesn't have off road gears. It doesn't have all the extra stuff that all higher end models have, but she has enough luxury, power, strength and glory that makes owning and driving a 4Runner feel and look like you're a millionaire inside and out and that's all that matters to me. Magnetic Grey is the color of my baby and she is one tough and classy babe. As far as parking in the city.... well, she is still a big baby, but as long as one knows how and where to park then the glory is still being able to take it where ever one wants. ;-)

nothing wrong with the 3.5 v6, though people who are comfortable with the torque from the 4.0 might be disappointed probably because they aren't used to having to drive up to redline for the power. both are great engines, just different powerbands..
@michaelaherrejon8398
@michaelaherrejon8398 6 лет назад
Ken Kozawa As I mentioned in my post, I’ve driven a 2012 V6 4.0 for 5 yrs and then purchased a 2017 V6 3.5 Tacoma and I know what is the difference between which has greater power in the pick up,, but if one only reads the difference between the two then I’m blessed that i still have more than just offering an opinion by buying the experience and living the ‘experience.’ Besides, the 4Runner is the SUV version of the Tacoma just like the Sequoia is the SUV version is to the Tundra and if one can afford to upgrade to any of the two then enjoy what suits ones lifestyle.

@steveyulenburg129
@steveyulenburg129 6 лет назад
Certainly NOT standing up for the Fiat built Jeeps.. But you are referring to a vehicle (the Compass) that is literally less then half the MSRP of this 4Runner. And things definitely could be worse! We could be talking about the So called "Jeep" "trail rated" Renegade, that is built in Italy and is a vehicle that shares it's platform with the POS Fiat 500L! LOL Indeed the vulnerable Jeep will finally meet it's demise with the "Fix It Again Tony" company, eventually when people get tired of working on their cars they just bought a few years back.

I had a SR5 for a rental this summer, put 2100 miles on it. As a former FJ Cruiser owner, it was nice to revisit the solid build quality and BOF construction..and to a lesser degree, the thirsty 4.0 STILL with a 5 speed. I did get about 21mpg on mostly highway driving though. I think some tweaks in the tech and infotainment dept. and a drivetrain upgrade is all this needs. Glad to see a review that appreciates what this vehicle is truly about.

Very good review. I've had 4Runners for years. The first thing I do with all mine is change the tires to a more aggressive tread. Here in the northwest come winter the Dunlop tires don't cut it in the snow. My last 2011 had 114,000 miles on it and was trouble free. I'm currently rolling in a 2018 TRD Off Road Premium. For their class no one else comes close to them. They are the gold standard IMO.

I have this model with KDSS and sunroof delete. No sunroof adds some appreciable head room. No squeek or rattle is very true. People knock it for the 5spd transmission. The drivetrane is bullet proof. This vehicle is typically rated in the top 10 reliability for US consumers every year. After owning a non reliable vehicle happy to give up some fuel mileage for dependability. Summertime with all 5 windows down is great. Do get the upgraded Toyota all weather rubber floor mats.

Excellent review that objectively looks at the truck for what it's supposed to be and doesn't ding it for not being based on a Camry chassis. My wish list for my 2016 TEP would be display screen 1" larger diagonally, 6 speed auto that keeps the bullet-proof nature of the 5 speed, and the ability to toggle "Eco Mode" ... the drive by wire throttle mapping with this truck is a bit ridiculous, and makes the truck FEEL slower than it is by making you press the pedal down very far to go. I understand it's for fuel economy, but many vehicles have the ability to toggle this on and off for when you want a more responsive throttle.

I spent a week with this series 4-Runner and found it much more expensive and larger then it's predecessors, however it is one of the few traditional SUV's still on the market. They are capable off-road with a down shift able transmission, good clearance and an excellent 4-wheel drive system. It is HEAVY and feels LARGE on jeep trails. Let's not talk about MPG //;-(. Rather then buy one, we commissioned a build on a jeep Cherokee XJ.

Hey, thanks for vid. Wondering if you 've driven or heard about the Trail and SR5 editions on a washboard road? I've read and seen vid's saying only the TRD's give a nice soft washboard effect ??

I was hoping for their new infotainment system in the 2018 4Runner ,the same as in the new Camry. I hope Toyota does not change the look of this truck just the interior set. Maybe 2019

Jeep and ram have the nicest infotainment system in my opinion. I’m getting ready to get a new vehicle and not really sure what to get. The technology is a big part

Scott's reviews You don't want the Toyota infotainment system. I'm on the 4 unit in my Trail Premium and the latest doesn't work either. Be warned the system will freeze up and the only way to reset the it is to pull over and turn the engine off. Read reviews!!! Horrible!!!

I had a '10 SR5 which an elderly driver caused it to be totaled...it protected me though, so in safety...i don't believe the safety Ratings or that you need the new safety gizmos. 4Runner = built in Japan, like a Brick. As it held value like a champ, I went with a '12 Limited. 2 things wrong with the Limited...a) the heated windshield section which thaws frozen wipers doesn't seem to melt ice from the wipers. b) my automatic driver side step has an issue, which I'm too tall for it to matter, but short passengers enjoy that side. With those two minor issues.... it's an Amazing vehicle. It holds its value like a beyotché.

Seems like the Cherokee trailhawk does everything that does, but better thanks to the approach/departure angles, without any of the fuel economy compromise. I'd love to see a comparison of the two.

TestDrivenTV technically maybe not, but both are built for off road. They each have rear lockers, about 9 inches of ground clearance, metal skid plates, their own version of "crawl control". It would be a good comparison.

The Cherokee is a front-wheel drive based car where the 4Runner is a body on frame truck with much heavier duty and well built chassis. There is no comparison whatsoever in how they actually feel, perform and last. If you were to compare the 4Runner to a Jeep it would be the Wrangler Unlimited.

Toyota Hilux Frame not the more narrow Taco frame. That’s why it’s more stable towing and on/off road

Pro tip: Air the tires down to 20 psi when you hit the trails. Night and day. More traction, more comfort, and it's easier on your tires and suspension components.

I love my 2004 4Runner Sport 4.7 that I bought new for $36,000. For 2019, Toyota needs to bring back the 4.7-liter V-8 and increase the horsepower to at least 340. They also need to add dual exhaust and adaptive cruise, collision avoidance, blind spot warning, auto lane-keeping, and improve the overall styling and interior materials.

Well Sam, I don't disagree with you that manufacturers went to the unibody route in droves...but it was a result of consumer demand. Lots of sales of Highlanders and RAV4s means money to keep the 4Runner and Land Cruiser around.
@rightlanehog3151

Good point but they should keep both types of vehicle available. Let's not kid ourselves, when oil prices go back up again sales of body-on-frame trucks/SUVs will plunge.
