2018 brings along some tweaks to the recipe but this is still the same second generation Sequoia that's been with us since 2008. Can a truck that's gone largely unchanged for a decade remain a relevant choice? Take a look in this week's review.

Let's compare repair bills after 10 years of ownership in the 3 ton SUV category and see which brand comes out on top.

I’m looking at a 2018 with 38k miles for $45k and honestly, as outdated as it is, it’s reliability beats any updated crap the competition has. As long as it drives and it’s comfortable and spacious, I’m good. I hope it goes well and I get my new sequoia!!

I know this is an older video, batmen. I love my 2010 Sequoia. I know it's dated and old, but It's so reliable.

My '02 Sequoia has 300k on it. Any Tahoes or Expeditions with 300k you want to drive in?

I would caution anyone buying the new or slightly new Expedition. I own a Sequoia (2008) that looks very similar to this one, it has 182k miles on it and still runs like new. What's amazing to me is how I'd still rather drive this 2008 Sequoia than the Expedition I had. I owned a 2017 Expedition with 60k miles on it. Yes it had more creature comforts, however I hated the steering compared to the Sequoia, I also already had check engine lights on the dash due to PCV issues. The turbo driver side was already leaking oil....and don't get me started on turbo reliability. The sequoias dash buttons don't wear off, everything just works and feels the same at 182k as a new one...not kidding here. Drive any other brand and they feel like a box of rocks around 120k miles compared to the Toyota. There's just something endearing about the reliability/quality of ride and consistency of how the Sequoia feels even with high mileage. If you are looking to keep a vehicle for a long long time past warranty, don't consider another large SUV. I've had them all (Yukon XLs, Expeditions etc.), and none compare with high mileage and resale value to the Toyota.

couldnt agree more. just bought a mint condition 08 platinum sequoia with 114k on it and drives brand new. i almost feel guilty for paying 15k. and a 2019 platinum is 70k? i tell everyone the same story, i cant stop talking about how i scored on this truck!

Toyota SUV's are the best resale trucks in Canada, I was just looking at a 2010 4Runner with SR5 with 160K for $17K today with 4.7 V8. You just can't beat its reliability period!

Never thought I'd say this, but thanks in large part to your review of both the Expedition and this Sequoia, if I had to choose...I'd easily go for the Expedition! Taking into account that I am NOT a Ford fan, that's saying a lot! Btw Paul I can't help but notice that most of the vehicles you review have either Ontario or BC license plates. Do special vehicles specifically get shipped into Calgary for your channel reviews? Or...how does that all work? Just curious, seeing as how you review cars here in cowtown...one would think you'd be driving cars from local dealerships. Feel free to clue me in. Either way...boring vehicle (the Sequoia), but another great and informative review! Hope you enjoy making these reviews as much as I enjoy watching them! 😀

Expedition's turbo puts more stress on its engine and, therefore, shortens the powerplant's life expectancy. Enjoy your repair shop bills/invoices, while I'm out cruising in my quality, reliable, durable and longevity Toyota.

People are trading them in for flashy expeditions, armadas, and Yukon. You can catch a bargain at a Nissan dealership, Ford dealership, or GM dealership. You can also find a good trade in at a Honda dealership. Apple carplay and Android is getting people to trade their vehicles to get behind that has these two.

If you're buying a Toyota , and by that I mean any Toyota , you're not buying anything that would excite you , they are as boring to drive , they are behind everyone in technology , they are still using engines and transmissions that are a decade old , but what you get with a Toyota that you don't get with any other manufacturer is dependability .
@swanblake
@swanblake 6 лет назад
satbir saggu its sad to me that you are so correct. In the 90s they were innovative and still reliable. I mean they built a mid engined car for under $45k. Now they need Subaru or BMW to make a car that is exciting

total bs, most Toyotas are far ahead in technology, HSD drivetrain, combined injection, 10 speeed auto, etc.
@Ficon
@Ficon 6 лет назад
Mgoblagulkablong The only way to get a 10-speed gearbox in a Toyota is to buy two 2018 4Runners. Combined port/direct injection is an engineering hack when you can't get emissions right with direct injection alone since it increases complexity and cost. I will grant you that the hybrid Toyotas have elevated cobalt mining by children in Congo to a new level.

Personally I don't care if Toyota takes there time on an update as long as that vehicle is class leading. The real issue i have with Toyota is Toyota charging the same price or in most cases, even more money than when it was introduced and literally nothing has changed. Nissan is good with handling a dated portfolio of vehicles. Although Nissan now claims they are not going to discount old vehicles so they will most likely tank. Toyota is much like GM of the 90s where it just has customers that blindly transition from one Toyota to the next, never shopping the market. They get rewarded for not updating ther vehicle. For example, they have had basically the same 3.5L V6 over 15 years. In 15 years of production I would hope you become efficient and reliable at building the same thing. They would be viewed much differently if theydont have ther e glory years of the 90s. Not much new has happened since then. Most of there cars are a partnership. They can't even develop there own sports car. Long winded so I apologize its just frustrating to watch a leader now become a follower at best

I don't care if it's dated and ugly if it is dependable like most Toyota's are. People forget what vehicles are for. Pretty means nothing if it is broken down on the side of the road.

Actually not true. I am actively test driving several different models, from several different makes to replace my 2004 Toyota Van when it hits 500,000 kms, including Toyotas, but a few other manufacturers as well. And also to replace a brand spanking new "pretty" vehicle we bought a few years ago from a different manufacturer with all kinds of bells and whistles, whos maker I will not name as I don't want to get into a brand war, but let me say, I regret the purchase of that particular vehicle. Sure it runs but it feels so cheap compared to the ugly old van ;-) So I am not sure of the point you are trying to make? That Toyota's quality has sunk? I wish now we had bought a second-hand last gen Rav4 instead of the cheap feeling pretty piece of junk LOL.

My 2013 Sequoia 5.7 with 220,000kms gets 14 litres/100 kms highway @105 km hr. A schizophrenic right foot might be an issue. My 2003 4RUNNER 4.7 with 370,000 gets about the same mileage. Despite what you say I experience completely the opposite. The fit and finish is exceptional the interior is outstanding and has all types of creature comforts and bonus features. It also rides very very well, albeit somewhat like a cruise ship. I guess you can’t afford one so you’re a bit jealous. Stick with a scrawny Subaru. What a whiner! P.S. my iPhone hooks up the minute I get in and picks up exactly where my music left off. Maybe you should review phones instead.🙄

The problem is that Toyota reliability was a thing in the 1980s and 1990s when cars were crappy. Most modern cars will go 100k miles which makes Toyota products just obsolete. What's worse, Toyota won't even stand behind their products - I can get a better new vehicle warranty in a Jaguar. This is a company that rested on its laurels for a very very long time and is now finding itself completely outclassed. I have owned two Toyotas and at one point thought I would be a lifelong customer. Now I don't even consider the brand when car shopping due to poor design, bad interior materials, outdated mechanicals, and a terrible driving experience.
@rightlanehog3151

Toyota products typically go at least 200,000 miles and that make other brands truly obsolete.
