In this video I explain and show how to do an oil and filter change on a Toyota Tacoma with the 2.7L I-4 engine. *I mistakenly stated it took 5.1 quarts in the video but it takes 6.2 quarts.* This will also apply to any other Toyota with the same engine. I take this slow enough that even if you've never done an oil change before you can learn from me showing you step by step. So do it yourself and start saving time and money!
Please check out other videos of mine @JimsGarageToys and smash the "like" button and subscribe too! I would love to grow my channel over time but I need your help to do it.
Thanks,
Jim

Good oil change video. Double check your owners manual for oil capacity. My 2018 2.7L calls for 6.2 quarts with the filter. I wouldn’t think your 2019 would be any different.

Thanks for the heads up. I went by what the owner said and just double checked it and you are correct, it takes 6.2 quarts.

Same on my 2017 2.4 L. Calls for 6.1 QTs with filter..

To completely avoid or minimize the mess when replacing the oil filter I came up with my own solution. First, loosen the filter but don't remove it yet then poke two holes on the bottom of the filter with a nail set or nail or screw. Let it drain first for as long as possible. This is easy when the oil filter is mounted in a vertical position. To avoid the mess when removing the oil drain plug I use a longer extension and socket with a magnetic insert installed in it. You can also buy a special tool like OTC Drain Plug Pro for removing an oil drain plug.

True, as this wasn't my vehicle it didn't bother me as I had a glove on. The drain plug can be pulled out of the way quickly or just dropped. Normally I just let the oil filter oil drain out before removing the filter. It wasn't that bad though. When owning a vehicle I always come up with little tricks like you mentioned. Thanks. Hopefully owners of this engine will appreciate the tips.

@@jimsgaragetoys I didn't want to be annoying. I have been working on my cars for more than thirty years (the last 16 years on Toyota). I'm always thinking about how to improve something. I have to admit sometimes I'm being anal when it comes to cars and tools.

@@MrCROBosanceros I do the same on my cars. I've been working on my own cars since I got my 69 Corolla in 1980. The right tool always makes things simpler and quicker. 😀

Great video but might want to check the dipstick for correct level after the change. My 2020 2.7L Tacoma takes 0W-30 full synthetic and needs 6.2 quarts.

Yes, thanks. I made a point of saying that in the description and did it in bold so that everyone would see it. I went by what my son-in-law said as it was his truck but he didn't realize until later what he told me when he watched the video.

Thank you for your video. If I do the same way you did, It will mess me up. I hate very much the location of the oil filter.
@jimsgaragetoys

Mess you up how? You drain the oil, remove the filter, put on a new filter and replace the drain plug, add new oil. 🤣

First locate the transmission pan and the oil pan. They do look alike and both have drain plug..
@jimsgaragetoys
@jimsgaragetoys 11 месяцев назад
True, but the oil pan is under the engine and the transmission pan is farther back under the transmission! Pretty obvious the difference but new comers need to make sure.

Thinking seriously of ordering/buying a new Tacoma SR 2.7 4x4. I'm impressed by the dead simple tech and the tried and true engine that is basically bullet proof. Lotsa truck for the money I think compared to the price of other new trucks out there! Thoughts? How does it do on the highway at say 75? I'd be driving it from Illinois to Florida once or twice a year most likely or even Illinois to Maryland. I'd also like to set it up for overlanding eventually. Thanks!

You can't go wrong with a Tacoma. They aren't known for being super fuel efficient but I would imagine that you would see around 20mpg but others that have a 4x4 would need to chime in. My son-in-laws Tacoma is a 4x2 and in the city it doesn't see much over 65mph. I drove it once and saw around 25-26 mpg so adding more speed and the 4x4 I would guess around that 20 mark. Most people that own trucks don't seem to care about fuel mileage. 🤣

Thats why i bought my 22 Tacoma Sr access cab, without the jump seats, 4x4 black. The simplicity. Wanted the simple 2.7 4banger its all I need, before they discontinued the motor. They are all turbos now. No race truck gets me around just fine. Six foot bed comes in handy and is actually used. Totally paid off and will be doing my 10000 mile oil change soon. Every 5000 miles for me don't care what Toyota says. Have nothing bad to say about this truck. It will probably outlive me 😮😮😮.love this simple truck, simplw works. Peace........

It does, that's why there is a bold note saying that in the description just below the video so you don't miss it. 🤣 It's my son'in'laws truck and told me the wrong number so I added that in so people would know the correct amount.

I bought a 2022 Tacoma brand new from dealer with 2year waranty, they say my first oil/filter change will be at 10,000 miles...is that ok in your opinion?...Thankyou.
@jimsgaragetoys
@jimsgaragetoys Год назад
That's the fist one that they will do and pay for. I'm a big believer in changing the oil and filter at 1k miles on every new car or engine rebuild. So are all of the Toyota Master Techs that I've spoken with. After that I change the oil & filter at 5k miles and every 5k. miles after that. I let Toyota pay for the 10k and 20k mile oil changes but I double check their work. I know that many oils are able to go longer but changing the oil gets all of the dirt, carbon, gas, and water from condensation that is in the oil out of the engine. New oil is always better than oil with 5k miles on it. Oil is cheap, engine and transmissions are not. The only reason I would change it every 10k miles is if I was going to sell it at 50k-80k miles. If you are planning on keeping it then do a 5k mile OCI. Even if you sell it potential buyers will love the fact that you took such good care of it. My daughter bought a 2009 Corolla 5MT last year and it had 173k miles on it but it ran like new. The previous owner had the oil changed every 5k miles at a Toyota dealer and the gear oil in the transmission every 30k miles with receipts for all the work. A complete service history is valuable.
