This was a more honest down to earth review than all the other “pro you tubers.” Those guys act like each switch is the greatest thing ever to have been added to the truck!
Both Tacomas I owned are 2019 V6 and I4 in SR trim. I swapped the V6 for the I4. The v6 under normal use is about as anemic and the I4. The 4 cylinder is a utility engine and only found in trucks and SUVs. I4 is designed intentionally for heavier duty applications. It has an iron block. v6 is aluminum with liners and was carried over from cars. I4 is arguably a tougher motor by design for daily use. It has a long history of reliability along with updates... particularly the block. The v6 is a car engine with a similar power band to the I4 is you compare tables. The v6 requires high RPMs to get power out of it. Unless you floor it, I4 is very similar regarding acceleration. I think there is a 2 second difference 0-60 acceleration... negligible performance gains. The gas mileage is significant different ! My v6 averaged 18 MPG. My I4 averages 22MPG. I4 also burns less fuel under idling. The I4 is less shift happy and doesn't hunt for gears as much as the v6 (probably due to the Atkinson cycle of the v6). I4 is much cheaper for parts and repairs (more parts readily available)... less parts (less points of failure...) and naturally aspirated leaving it to be easier to work on (more space in the engine bay, etc.). That is v6 has a high pressure fuel pump...12 injectors while the I4 has 4 injectors and dual overhead cams. Many other complexity arguments worth noting. I wouldn't hesitate to own another v6 but if you value simplicity, MPG, reliability (v6 is reliable too but I4 tends to last longer by 50-100k miles. One video a guy got almost 1 million miles out of the 2.7)... I4 is the way to go as a daily driver. Toyota has a history of bullet-proof 4 cylinders. I prefer the I4 after owning the v6. Again, I enjoyed both. If you plan on towing above the 3,500lbs rating of the I4, I guess get the V6 for about 2,800 to 3k more lbs of towing but at that point you may as well just get a full-size truck if you plan on towing regularly. I installed a full 7-pin tow package with brake controller... tows fine (3k lbs RV).
Your comment is legendary! I saw all your comments and I appreciate them a lot! Thank you. Yea I’m at 3000 miles and it’s not bad on gas maybe cause I don’t check it just cause I get free gas for work lol but the v6 isn’t noticeable until higher rpms like you said. I love the truck and loved the 4 cylinder!
I have to say this is really swaying me towards the 2.7. I agree 4 cylinder Toyotas are bullet proof. I have a 95 celica that has NEVER needed anything fixed in the engine since I got it used. 290k miles now. Sister in law owns a 10 Corolla. Sometimes she skips oil changes and 100+ mile commute. Not a single issue, original battery too which is amazing.
Thank you for posting this informative video. Your right, there is very little information posted on RU-vid on Toyota's 2.7 engine so I was happy to see your posting Aing. I like your videos because unlike other people who post automotive videos here you do not yell and jump around with jittery camera movement which I find annoying. In closing thank you for being a good older brother to your sister.
I own a 2019 Tacoma SR 4X4 with 6 foot bed and it came with a CD player. I guess I'm old school (59 years old) but, I'm happy it did. I own hundreds of CD's. I use the CD player all the time. This is the first brand new truck I've owned since 2008. Most likely this will be my last truck. I saved up my money for three years and paid my truck off the day I purchased it in January 2019. I really enjoy your videos!
59 Years YOUNG! Thats such an awesome story, glad to hear you got a sweet truck my previous one also had a CD player I was surprised the new one did not. I am glad you enjoyed, thanks for the support!
Yeah man I’ve got an older one with a 2.7 as well and honestly I love it.. it has 320k miles and doesn’t burn nor leak any oil between changes, still runs like a champ. While it may not be a race truck it pulls hard for what it is and I have no problem towing my ranger bass boat on the weekends and occasionally a trailer load of firewood in the winter.
Layne Landon, thank you sir. I’ve been looking for the 6 speed manual but there aren’t too many of those around. This make me feel more comfortable because I’m looking to keep the truck for a long time. I won’t be so hesitant to look at an automatic now. Thanks again and God bless!
Well the automatic that they use is the same one that they use in the V6 so its under stress to begin with so with the 2.7l only makeing like 160hp or whatever that auto should last forever but from what I've seen if you're going to be Towing stuff at the limit of the truck 2 or 3k lbs the manual seems to be better @dariocardona2805
I have a 2007 Tacoma extended cab with the 2.7 engine and after 144k miles, starts right up and drives well. I got it with about 400 miles and I’ve driven it in blizzards, torrential rains, extreme heat and dust storms with no issues. I’ve also driven it across the country and it is great. I just wish I had a few more features like cruise control and maybe a slightly better sound system. Also, it has been in 3 major accidents and it hasn’t been totaled yet, so the value is simply amazing. I was daily driving it until the pandemic broke out and it handles the highway use just fine.
Ive been looking for decent 2.7 engine reviews on youtube, very hard to find. I might end up making one of my own for my 2020 sr5 access cab. No complaints on my end. Yes, a little slow at accelerating but the 24.7 mpg on highway (full tank of highway driving) and 21.7 in the city (full tank of city driving) is hard to beat. Cruises butter smoother up to 83 mph (sorry, fastest ive gone with the truck so far). I can tow my buddy's trailer and boat at ~2800 lbs with ease. Now, if i was up in the mountains and not Florida, I'd think about getting a full size truck. Truck is great so far! I test drove the the v6 for a week, same year, and the gears were racing like crazy and the gas milage at the same speeds were averaging around 19/17.
That’s a really good written review, honestly don’t think many would go over 83MPH. Would love to watch a review by you, let me know once you post it 😎
The 2.7 liter 2tr fe engine is a legendary bulletproof engine i have a hilux with 2.0 1tr engine here in africa simple tough engine great review buddy and please take care of your sister
Hear ya! I have the same 2.7L truck in black. I bought the ‘Sprint Booster V3’ for about $300 it really pepped the engine up. Throttle response is so much better. Feels like the V6 unless I’m pulling a camper. I can get by towing 1500-2000lb on interstate or hilly roads. Think of sport mode as a gear limiter. Sport 4 limits your transmission to first 4 gears for better use of torque curve. Sport 5 limits to your first 5, etc.
1:59 That's just condensation dripping from your evaporator core, just a simple drain tube that drips excess from your A/C temperature differential. It's not a problem unless it's a LOT of fluid, like steady flow to gallon spray, or you've got the drip in a color other than colorless.
My mom has a 2013 Tacoma (2.7L, 2wd, automatic, extended cab) that has over 250k miles. All she has done is put on new tires, brake pads, oil change and battery. She's never had an issue.
When it's time to say goodbye to my sport trac I'll consider a 2.7 Tacoma just because I know the engine can last virtually forever and it's super easy to service
I bought a 2017 sr 2.7 5 speed 4x4 and I had the money to buy the v6 off road but I think the inline 4 is built better than the v6. I paid it off and only have 16,000 miles on it!!
silverhorder1969 you are awesome! Dude that’s so good! Congratulations! It’ll serve you right I went up to a v6 if I could go back I’d take the mighty 4bang any day.
When you fold rear seats down you slip those seat belt buckles into the back seat rest pouches at bottom corners to keep in place so they don't drop down like they do.
Thanks so much for commenting! I appreciate your comment! Yea not all of us can afford those so def gotta show what’s going on in the lower trim trucks
I love my 2.7 liter engine mine is.paired with a 5 speed manual and I'll tell you that is one sweet package it's pretty fast off the line it's not a problem getting to merge onto the highway and I usually use cruise controll but I've looked down a few times and found myself doing 90 miles and hour so there is definitely power there mines a 4×4 and in New England it's a must have I've never gotten stuck anywhere mind you my tires are the o.e.m s That came with the veicle we've had storms with 15 to 20 inches of snow I've never had to shovel out just clean off the truck put it in 4 wheel drive and I plow right through it it came with more things I could have imagined power heated mirrors power windows in 5 years it's never been in the shop except for oil changes it's started up on mornings when the temp. has been as low as 5 degrees ferenhight so cold the clutch fluid is so thick that the clutch pedal takes a few seconds to come up of the floor and one last thing I do most of my driving in town and 19 to 21 miles on average isn't bad in my book all for around twenty eight thousand dollars thanks for your time
I have the same truck. I had the 2019 v6 SR. Love the I4 over the V6 for many design reasons... performance is negligible between the two. 4-5 MPG difference between the two... sticker MPG rating is a bit off. That piece @3:12 is where the power connectors would be. I put a full tow package on my truck and replaced that blank with 4/7 pin connectors. I4 if you are unaware has an iron block compared to the v6 having aluminum... good choice of vehicle even though you focused on priced. I4 is a truck motor while the V6 is a carried over car engine. @7:50 the ECT changes shift points to keep motor in the power band... put more wear and tear on the vehicle and tanks the fuel economy. Only use it while towing if I were you.
Thinking about this truck, as a secondary vehicle.. Live in the city but, have a dirtbike + mountain bike + camera gear so.. Simple points A to B I feel like it will do the job..
Topshelf Junior Yea it’ll do great I definitely think you should drive a 4cyl and a V6 just do you can feel the difference also maybe even opt a 4X4 model? Either way it’s a great truck
I have a 2.7 access cab 2wd. I use it for small boat towing and mountain biking in Florida. Wouldnt recommend if you travel in the mountains. But for me, it was $4K cheaper, better gas milage, and relaibilty. I'd recommend it. Note that you will have to have ect on or pushing it to metal for accerlating but once you get to your desired speed, it's butter smooth.
Just bought 2022 Tacoma sr access cab 2.7 4x4 love the simplicity little sluggish but I knew that going in, take care of your vehicle, and it will take care of you!
If you did not find this out yet..at 9:58 when the seatbelt buckle dropped down in the way, you can tuck them in the little pouch in the bottom of the seat back right above them.
Guess You figured out by now that is your trailer hitch plug in cover.... :) I'm thinking of buying one myself, I'm wondering how the little 4cyl runs out with the 6sp trans?
Nice truck! Good choice. If you find you need better traction for snow or whatever reason, put some BFG All terrain T/A's on it, and it'll go thru pretty much anything. A sunroof would be dope, but that's nitpicking.
not sure if you know this, just got the same truck except mines just an access cab, but that usb slot will allow you to hook a usb flash drive to it and play music straight from the flash drive. its the only way to listen to music man. Bluetooth kills batteries. Battery lives matter.
I have a 2019 just like yours! Love it so much! My has so far 43k, really good on gas! Suspension is the only thing I don’t like, other than that man I love it. Live in Maryland bought it Virginia
Finally Toyota has a multitude of cup holders my 97 4Runner has 2 cup holders in the dash that are useless & won't hold a cup❗My 97 has the 2.7 4cyl with 357,000 miles on original engine 👍 I ❤ my Toyota but wish I had only 2 of your cup holders up front❗
My 97, at 116,000miles headgasket and the #1 rod bent at the same time, this motor never ran hot 2.7 motor oil was change every 4.000 miles I did repair my self took 21 hours to repair. Cost 300 dollars, I'm 64 too
Congrats Bro & Once u put it in sport you basically driving like if it’s a manual car but with out the third pedal bro and ion think you can grind the gears on it since there’s no clutch but yeah the + is to go up gears to u shift up after u reach like 4,000 to 5,000 rpm shift up to go to the next and the minus is basically downshifting my guy don’t worry about grinding nothing there won’t be no harm to the engine bro trust me
Nice video, truck and beautiful daughter! Here in Brazil we have a similar one: Toyota Hilux. 2.7 flex or Diesel 2.8, both 4 cylinder. The ammount of diesel pickups, even from other brands, is bigger.
Nice truck. I have a 97 Taco with the 2.7. Doesn't even look like the same engine. Much much less clutter under my hood. 300,010 miles on it. Just now replacing the radiator (the plastic top developed a small crack). It's been an extraordinary truck although not so much extraordinary for a Yota. 600 K or so is not uncommon.
Raven Feather Wow NICE! Yea I really wanted an older on with that older body style couldn’t find any so I had to go with this one but none the less still a beast of an engine!
Cars icy the think that u didn’t know is for a trailer so when u hook it up the lights on the back of the trailer work just help u out and don’t kill yourself looking it up
Looks good...good choice for you and your family. ..truck is gonna last long time... 15 years ago I bought a 1988 toyota base model from friends brother. $1200$$... single cab 2wd. 22r motor. ..4 speed stick. . Put 100 thousand miles on it.. No problems at all besides regular maintenance. .at first 30mpg...then at 180 thousand miles...28mpg.... Should have kept the truck.but got tired of driving it..... ....mike from minnesota. ... Thinking about buying another toyota. ..miss my pick up. . 22R MOTOR VERY GOOD MOTOR
I'm planning on trading my 2007 tacoma prerunner here shortly. I'm tired of constantly fixing things on it and the ride is incredibly uncomfortable. Its lifted 3" riding on 285 KO2s and I beat it to hell. I test drove this and the comfort is great. I also live in VA out in Henrico.
S + - stands for "sequential" I believe. it means you can shift the gears manually. Helpful when going down grades and using the engine to relieve you from having to break hard.
Can you get that engine with that cab size in 4wd? I want the double cab with a 4wd but with that engine. It’s plentiful for me and that engine is proven itself
The Corolla LE is the middle of the road model, right above Base. It’s interesting they add so much that people don’t need. My gripe with recent Tacoma is no manual with the 2.7L. Ridiculous.
that is gonna be my next truck i like the 2.7 litter with six speed manual i don’t need a V 6 coz now i have a Frotier 2012 with 299990 mile hoped it will last me until i get the tacoma .
Dude you got you a nice truck. I notice you say it’s “basic” a lot but I know you know this, there’s nothing more anyone needs. The more fancy stuff the more broken parts. This is exactly what I’d want but with 4wd. My dad has a 88 and a 92 Toyota with the same engine (bulletproof) and that engine has been around forever. It’s proven. I want the modern yota with the old school engine.
Elitetr1nity I actually took it on a beach trip and when you put your foot down it’ll move no issue it’s just getting up to speed was the issue, but yes it does good!
nice I baught my 2019 sr5 double cab 4 cylinder Tacoma in July and hit my 5k miles a few days ago ! Time to go get my free oil change with Toyota’s care program! Sometimes I wish I had gotten the v6! But that’s like Extra 100-200$ payment each month plus I don’t tow anything and can avoid friends /relatives asking for any favors for towing lmao she’s my little baby!
Terpmas Trichomes stick with the 4 cylinder I got the v6 I have people asking me literally every week if they can use my truck lol the 4 cylinder is a beast!
Adolfo Valdez Now i have never took it off road but I imagine if you get a 4X4 version yes of course but the engine feels at a loss for power at all time time so bigger tires is probably all you wanna do 👍
