There's a new Touareg in town, so we thought it would be worth sizing up the new VW with the number-one best-selling large SUV in Australia, the Toyota LandCruiser Prado.
While it’s around $6000 more expensive off the bat, not excluding the significant 10-grand bump in options, the Touareg does pack a lot of punch for the money. Beyond the level of inclusions, it is very well made and refined, with a flash interior, great ride, and smooth and eager driveline giving it a premium overall feel.

They are completely different and built for different purposes... Touareg is more elegant and luxurious then prado, but not suitable for off road like prado...

Practicality and durability wise, I'll go for prado. They are completely different. Prado is more on off-roader. Meanwhile, touareg is more on city driving and luxury. I think pajero or nissan terra would be the best suv to fight prado

The 1st generation Touareg was (surprisingly) excellent and extremely capable off road. It had ground clearance of up to 11.8 inches (300mm) with its air suspension (with on board air) and had centre and rear dif locks as well. In its ultimate configuration it had available front dif lock, a low transfer case and a disconnecting sway bar. Amazing. Touareg's focus is now on-road unfortunately

let me tell you something if you service your VW on time it will last longer touareg 2003 almost 200k miles no mechanical issue., o use the right oil for engine, every 6months ibhave to check front and rear differential oil, gearbox. compare to other prado 2003 i see around even 2010 still beat them

Got a first generation V10 Touareg with rear locker and air and it is an absolute beast off road. Have to admit maintenance is a nightmare but there is going to be downside to everything special. Was looking for something to trade up from the touareg and this model of prado had my interest. Love the strong build, relatively luxurious interior, and 4wd prowess. Only let down was that engine and my god is it an absolute let down.

There's always someone. The Touareg doesn't need injectors at 100k routine service. The V6 diesel is virtually trouble free.

Well pay top dollar for a boring car and my are they are reliable. I bet u have only driven Japanese tractors and never experienced a proper drive. Finally Toyotas CEO has admitted they make boring car so now you will see a change in all Toyota car design thanks to Toyota Europe. Why is the supra a BMW. They have always been 5 yrs behind and they know that as they choose to do that but car makers like Hyundai and Kia are making a splash

nah, don't be fooled, the touareg is a very capable SUV. Here in GER most Touareg owners use this thing to tow heavy trailers (e.g. horses trailers) and they also use it for going offroad on a regular basis.

Love my Prado, but love my V6 Amarok even more - no difference off road, the V6 has it in spades over the 4 pot. V6 tows the camper on the sand like its not even there.

Couldn't agree more. I have had 7 Prado's over the years, both petrol V6 (which was a great engine) and the 3 litre and 2.8 litre diesels (the worst engine they have released in this vehicle). I now have a Land Rover Discovery 4 and my son has an Amarok. The Prado's come in third in our opinion every time. Amarok and Discovery are both a much better ride than the current Prado, and the Land Rover is easily the most capable off road.

@@hartzland7658 I've had three Disco's in a row now and have never had a reliability with any of them. On the older ones, I did my own servicing keeping costs down, but on the current one it's a bit too complicated for me and I'm not getting any younger, so I have it done at a good local service centre. Running and maintenance costs are no more than a Prado - in fact - the fuel consumption in the current Disco is better than a Prado. I'd say they compare pretty favourably overall.

That's an old chestnut. Resale value wouldn't matter to a Toyota nut, because their cars are so reliable they never have to buy another car. When you pay 20% too much for a Toyota because the resale is better are you really a clear thinker?

NO_EYES_ON_ME Prado is medium, Landcruiser 200 is large. Touareg is built on a platform considered “large” (yes even in North America... just not “ginormous” like a Navigator or whatever), but it’s interior space isn’t so big due to styling and design.

But boy what the heck will you do paying so much of fucking money for the prado and get the same engine as the fortuner and the prado. Definitely Volkswagen toureg is far better than the Toyota land cruiser prado for its excellent interior and estonding technology . Also unlike olden days Volkswagens have become extremely reliable. If u are so biased about reliability then double the budget and go for the ultimate land cruiser which is reliable and Also a great offer

Agreed .I'll take the Prado over the VW Touareg any day. Toyota is not beautiful but its so reliable, cheaper to maintain and has a higher value over the years than a Touareg. At the moment, I'm having engine problems with the Touareg after 6 years of ownership.

If you want a luxury vehicle for around town and the odd trip to a national park, and your time horizon is 5 years, buy the VW. If you want to travel across Australia and looking at keeping the car until you die, get the Toyota.

I have to disagree. The Touareg when fitted with the appropriate wheels and tyres is exceptional off road. Depending on which model you get, it also comes with centre and rear locker also.

I have just done a trip east to west in an older VW Touareg... and then we did it back... Our regular drive has been a 2015 Landcruiser GXL 200 series... After shocking people with where we took the VW, folk seem staggered that after the trip we have now sold the Toyota... We had to buy a VW pre-loved but have now a 4.2 V8, 8 speed with airbags, all the tricks .... This VW, while two years old... it is the best car we have ever owned... We await the arrival of our new 2020 model

Well this suv has keyless start, plus from the tachometer, the engine is running, so thats not it. Looks like the message warning light... where you have to go into the car's message centre to see whats up. It could be any number of innocuous things, since most of the serious stuff have dedicated warning lights of their own

I didn't know that Toyota has axed the petrol V6. In my opinion, that engine was the one big advantage that the Prado had over most of its competitors (I have had 7 Prado's - four of them the V6 petrol). The 2.8 diesel is a gutless piece of crap with a lot of problems - the 3 litre diesel in the 120 series Prado was a better engine. I currently have a Land Rover Discovery 4 TDV6 that will run rings around any Diesel Prado. Given the choice of the two vehicles in this comparison - no comparison for me I'm afraid. The VW wins every day of the week. The only area where the Prado beats it is in extreme off road capability - but for that, I'll stick with my Land Rover thanks.

I still have my touareg 2003 in very good condition still beats most of my friends landcruiser > 2010, speed, features, comfort and the sound of the engine is great like a real sport car i have changed for the first suspension last week at 180k miles!!!! with african roads, ask mi landcruiser friends how often they change susp?? i own another toyota corolla every 12 months i change.

The only GOOD engine in a Prado. The 3 litre diesel was not too bad, though a bit agricultural by today's standards. The new 2.8 diesel is a gutless piece of crap which has put Toyota way behind many of its competitors.

You got two things wrong: 1. Wrong Comparisons! You can’t compare these things with the Tried, Tested and Proven Land Cruiser Prado. 2. Your final conclusion! The VW can never be better in all round capabilities than the Prado. VW is a city vehicle with some off-road capabilities. LCPrado is completely comfortable in the city and the only SUV better than it in the off-road probably might be the Toyota Land Cruiser. Land Rover Discovery vs Prado is fair comparison. VW should compare with BMW X5/6. However, if you insist that these two vehicles are comparable, I suggest you take those same two vehicles, when they both have crossed 150,000km, and give them another comparison and see which one have cost the owner the lest in maintenance/repairs (If the VW is still road worthy by that time.) I assure you that your conclusion would be a bit different. And that Sir, is why Toyota out-sells everything else. From the Corolla - RAV4 - Hilux - Tacoma - Prado, etc. Reliability and Durability is what you call it. European vehicles is nice and classy but they are not as good and durable as Japanese vehicles.

somewhat weak review. For such vehicles first an on road review should be done focusing on braking performance at high speed and body roll through lan change. Then there should be an off road review over steel tracks where differential of height between wheels can be created to check the suspension articulation.

Fair enough. If your Land Cruiser spends its life in the desert, definitely fit for purpose. If you use it mostly in town and traffic, at some point it wont take you back home, whereas the Touareg more likely will.

Most prado owners never take them proper 4x4ing anyway. They just drive down dirt roads with a caravan up to 3ton behind and all terrain tyres for making people think they are real off-roaders. Haha. Just stop being wankers and get the car that can actually tow 3.5ton and has plenty of power to pull anything. You can even put all terrain tyres on to make people think you actually go off-roading like you did in your old prado haha. Also what’s the prado 0-100 same time as an old kombi. Vw has moved on since the 70s Toyota is still stuck back there.

Prado driver can pass you very slowly while you are bogged on the beach and all your power digs you in up to you sump! Now if you do the maths on the VW’s ability to two “3.5ton” beyond the marketing crap you are going to work out that with a maximum VW specified ball weight of “140kgs” your going to be a bit short of the normally accepted 10% at the ball (210kgs when I went to school). If we go with the European rule of 5% it still looks like 175kgs and is still short 35kgs on the maximum “140kgs” ball! Happy to stand corrected and debate who is the wanker after VW knock back a warranty claim and your insurance tells you to get nicked. Some people are just dumb when it’s come to real world towing and the detail don’t you think?

These are in different grade. Prado is the upscaled Hilux and the Tourag is downscaled Q8.

My father and my brother in law have prados they are doing 170 000Km & 265000km respectively, both have never had an engine management light and have been at the back of a tow truck No German brand can compare to that 😂

The Toyota Land Cruiser in its element and in this segment and all its glory; especially a Kakadu Variant is completely incomparable with the Volkswagen Toureg. From ground clearance to the diff lockers and 4WD capabilities truly Volkswagen will be disgraced. I'd go for the Toyota Land Cruiser, all day, every day regardless.

I find it astonishing that Toyota still has the gall to sell a car like this Prado in 2019. With something resembling a tractor engine that is both crude and underpowered, one can only wonder how Toyota get away with flogging this outdated truck for the money. But then again, you have to wonder at the mentality of those punters out there that spend the $$$ on such an antiquated machine as the Prado. Toyota must have enormous profit built into this old hack. The VW, on the other hand represents the opposite end of the spectrum with such an amazing piece of kit that has to be class leading. With a thoroughly modern engine, suspension and tech, if anyone were to consider the Prado over this, they need only need to drive the VW to find out how far the game has moved on since the 90’s.

Hi Peter, except you can buy nearly 2 Prados for the price of a Tourag and the Prado will retain a market leading % of it's resale value. These cars are in no way direct comparison and shouldn't even be in the same video with the VW. Oh and the elephant in the room is VW Australia and their dealer and service network are an abomination..

The VW is a computer on wheels that will fail and depreciate drastically due to maintenance cost. Tech is nothing more than problems waiting to happen. If you are a soccer mom with a rich husband get a VW if you are a man and like going off-road, working on your own vehicle, and reliability. Toyota all day.

That is a $115k VW, but in true CarAdvice fashion thats omitted. I'm sure VW service will be well equipped to handle customers who buy such expensive cars, a Polo loaner perhaps? $6k extra of the bat, can I head to VW and told them Caradvice sent me??? Also if you buy a Prado a $67k GXL with leather will do quite nicely. Same engine, same tech, same same same. Stop with your BS Caradds.com.au

A prado GXL would not have KDSS, road handling would be completely different...

@@lukegilbert7985 they're just not in the same class, I had a Prado GXL, it's a great car but it's slow and roll a lot. The touareg like the q7 is way more powerfull and feel more planted not to mentio it's so much more luxurious.

You drove that Touareg on gay beach on a lovely sunny day where it got stuck and you still concluded with “its a brilliant off-roader” 😂😂😂😂. I know it’s named after a nomadic tribe that live in the Libyan desert but I think I’ll choose a bloody camel over it. Or a Land-cruiser. Not a fair comparison.
