2020 Lotus Evora GT - One Take 

Lotus: uses a Toyota V6 for their sports car. Toyota: uses a BMW motor for their sports car.

One of the most under appreciated cars in the game.

I can't believe how good that engine sounds. The biggest surprise of these cars is the engine.

I'm not usually one for green - but man with the interior accents really sets it off. Will always love Lotus.

About the camry engine and transmission. I was at Hethel recently and had a tour of the factory. The so called camry engine is only the block. The rest is reworked at lotus. And as for the tranny it's only the box. They toss all the internals gears and have their own. I noticed lots of destroyed engines sitting outside the engineering building. Apparently Lotus engineering tests all parts of car components for other manufacturers as that's been their bread and butter division. They said that because lotus only produces 1600 cars at year (of which only 20% r sold in the UK) it hasn't been cost effective to produce their own engine. It'll b interesting to c now that Geely is the major holder if that will change. And btw they were doubling the size of their campus in anticipation of a new sports cars which will continue to b built in UK.

"Now we're Lotusing" - That should become the standard phrase for every car that handles the twisty stuff like a Lotus, in perfect balance and feel. Oh, and long live the manual (take that C8)!

These will be highly sought after once they go out of production.

This would be the lotus I'd get if I could honestly, it seems like a good drivers car while not being completely uncomfortable and somewhat daily drivable. Can't tell but could you hear the supercharger? Love listening to that sweet sweet whine

Best sounding V6 on the market

Hard to say a V6 sounds good for most people but I really feel safe to say that sounds fantastic

Don’t see enough of these cars on the road I also like the fact it’s got a nice sounding V6 and no cracks and bangs

A youtuber (JeyEmm) as tested both and, surprisingly, the stainless exhaust is a bit louder. The titanium one saves 10kg tho.

Would buy this in a heartbeat if I had the cash. Love it!

Great review, Matt Thanks for pointing out the fly-by-wire throttle response lag. A glaring fault in an otherwise great car. NONE of the other reviewers brought that to light.

I absolutely love these things. Ever since day one when the Evora debuted I've been in love with it. Lotus is such an underrated manufacturer. So many people get hung up on Porsche which I'm not saying are bad cars but they also seem cookie cutter in a since compared to something like this.

The blips on the Exige V6 in Tour mode are the same - hesitant and you need to do them slowly and deliberate, but switch to Sport/Race and they become as sharp as if cable operated. You need to look into the driving modes of the Evora GT. You are probably not in the "right" mode :D

I dont think it's directly related to the whole drive by wire concept but more the Lotus calibration. Driven many cars with cable and dirve by wire where heel and toe was near the same. Got in my m8s Lotus Exige 350 and I could not heel and toe that car for love nor money. Some blips did nothing, some sent it to the moon. Glad you have the same issue in a Lotus!

Matt, you’re selling me on these Evoras. I am in the market for an NA2 NSX. After these Evora reviews, I may buy the NSX to enjoy for a bit since I’m not worried about the depreciation on one, then pick up one of these Evoras down the road. I’m also interested to see the next gen of Lotus sportscars as well. Between these and the new C8 I’m really excited about stuff that will be on the used market in the near future.

Hoping these will depreciate like crazy because of the C8 so I can pick up one. My son and I are in LOVE with the EVORA, I’m seriously waiting for one so I can leave it as heirloom for my son. Oh and yess any green or black with gold will do it.😀

I'm confused... As Matt does the turning radius test in this video on a Lotus Evora GT @5:39 "Turning radius is, ah, pretty good, not amazing, but pretty good." Yet as Matt did the turning radius on the Lotus Evora 400 in a previous video @11:02 "Oh My God! The turning radius is great." Is there a difference between the two cars?

really love the design ethos , all you need

Guys it is handmade engineering perfection built like a racer but for the street. For a Lotus that interior is to die for. It's cheap for what you get... never get as much for so little. Well the Exige 430 Cup would take about 400 kg off that... so you would get a little less dead weight and comfort... but you'd piss yourself every time you'd drive it... so be sure to spring for the catheter tube overboard dump option!

Nice video. I was just at Hethel for the Lotus Driving school and here is what they told me as we toured the factory: the engine block is Toyota camera but the engine internals r modified by lotus and reprogrammed maps plus adding. As for the transmission, they said the casing is what they use so when the transmission arrives from Toyota, they dump all of the gears and assembly inside and use their own. The reason why lotus doesn't use their own engines is because the sell 1600 cars annually (20%) in GB. The rest r exported. The irony is that they had quite a few engines sitting outside that had been burnt up in testing as they developed and test engines for other manufacturing. I fact in the last 10+ yrs, the only business line of lotus that has made money has been Lotus Engineering. But they r expanding their factory campus to double its current size expecting Geely to support several new sports cars under lotus to be more in line with Evija's look but more affordable.

I think the blip issue comes from the combination of Drive by wire like you stated and the supercharger. So many cars that I’ve driven with that combo do the same! Even from very different manufacturers

I love it. But my Lotus of choice would be the Elise/Exige instead mostly because those are a very reasonable price for the experience I want.

Great video as always. Reminds me of my old 99 Zanardi NSX, if it had a supercharger, that I sold earlier this year. I counted two close call bird strike events. Is wildlife (sky or ground) and issue in the canyons?

As a 2005 NSX owner I agree with everything you said comparing the Evora to the NSX. If the new NSX had was a manual, rear drive, for about $100k it would fly off the shelves. As a former Exige S owner what hurts Lotus is build quality and their dealer network.

That looks pretty awesome, sounds great too. I do thing the c8 will take the people in this market though. They both seem sweet, but for gods sake make them in manual!

My analysis for the reason behind Toyota's decision to not incorporate a compressor version of the Camry V6 engine, is because Toyota does not want to be responsible for Lotus's bankruptcy. Please remember my following explanation is addressed to whoever ends up reading this thread of comments: The average bloke doesn't know what a Lotus is. Most people totally forget that Lotus exists; whereas, everyone knows about Toyota's and buys them. When buying sports cars, people overlook Lotus's (Lotus markets itself poorly), and if consumers do know Lotus's, they still do not realize how amazing they are until they happen to test drive or watch videos. As a result, the majority of sports car buyers, never consider a Lotus and most often instead will buy a more well-known sports car. Since Toyota has kept Lotus in business by supplying their supercharged reliable Camry engines to Lotus, for their Evora's, Lotus has managed to sustain growth. Lotus's Evora sales - which are very few in number compared to any of Toyota sports car - are Lotus's bloodline. So, Lotus's greatest mutual partner is Toyota. They have a friendly non-competitive relationship. Toyota would essentially be "back-stabbing" Lotus if it used the supercharged Camry V6 as the engine for the Supra. Like so, the Supra would steal a significant portion of Lotus's Evora sales (which comprises the majority of Lotus's auto sales). Lotus would subsequently suffer. Toyota which for a while has been helping keep Lotus afloat would suddenly become Lotus's worst enemy: and it's detriment. What are your thoughts?

The GTE body was the best looking shape. It had a larger rear spoiler, a large outlet behind the front wheel and more inlets in rear wheel well.

Matt, there's a good chance the cup 2 pressures got too high if they didnt grip well after warm up. They like lower pressures than usual r compounds from my research and experience.
