The Miata is a hard car not to love. When Mazda decided to up the redline to produce even more power and driving verve, the fourth-gen car got just that much better. While it is a great car, this Club model with the Brembo/Recaro/BBS package does get a bit hard to stomach at $35k, when you consider what else is out there.

Great to see another POV Driving channel doing a video on the ND MX-5. At 10:10 where you mention about how much money the MX-5 costs, you should watch the following videos uploaded by a channel called 'savagegeese' - 1.) Mazda Miata Documentaries ND | EP5 Final Chapter? 2.) Testing the 2019 Miata and Cup Race Car | TheStraightPipes Included 3.) Review | 2017 Mazda MX-5 Miata RF | Contained 4.) Review | 2016 Mazda MX-5 | Curing Automotive Diseases . Especially watch the first video, where Savagegeese (Mark) interviews the Mazda engineers to why they've done specific things when developing the MX-5. You'll quickly find out in all of those four videos of why Mazda have priced the MX-5 to what it is. Sportscars are not easy to sell compare to SUVs nowadays yet Mazda have gone into the trouble of developeing a purpose-built chassis/suspension/gearbox design of what a good sportscar needs.

Yeah I agree. I love the production quality of Savagegeese's videos and appreciate how he delves into the technical aspects of these cars. Unlike the BRZ, the MX-5 does not share suspension components with Mazda's more mundane sedans and hatchbacks. Its all bespoke underpinnings that end up costing quite a lot.

Plus you have to consider these are built in Japan, so that carries a premium as well.

I’d love to see a $23k Miata as you talked about. Just bring the 1.5L version here to the US and base on the Sport model and strip out all the bs. Manual only. Sticker it for $22,995. Maybe some optional Club-esque upgrades for $2k. As much as I’d love to have one, I can’t think of nearly enough other shoppers in the new car market who’d want the same. It’d be even harder to make a viable business case for it. But I love the idea.

I love your videos but you always do the top level trim. I would love if you could do some mid tier trim reviews

I had fun on the live drive yesterday! I'm surprised Alisa got a ticket in that car! I really can't see her getting a ticket because she is such a slow driver lol!

The Camaro is certainly not 'the competition' in our market (Netherlands). A Camaro Convertible V8 starts at $ 136,600 and the MX5 starts at $ 37,400 over here

Which trim is best for Driving around town ? Thank you very much
@jessepotter365
@jessepotter365 3 года назад
I know this is an old comment and you may no longer care, but the sport (base model) is perfectly fine just driving around town. It still has the same great engine, transmission and overall fun factor. The suspension is a little softer than the club and grand touring trims which gives you a more comfortable drive if just cruising around.

Of course boxster had more than twice the storage space! It's more than twice as heavy and more than twice as big!
@Saboda53

Funny but, unlike you, I PREFER a sports car that’s smaller and lighter (I’m a big fan of the Lotus Elise, too). Mazda engineers worked very hard to make the ND smaller & lighter (“gram strategy”) when every other car maker in the world was going bigger and heavier. So I’m more than happy to pay more for a Miata. It’s simply the most FUN car you can buy, and I’m willing to pay a premium for more fun. Bigger/heavier/larger does not inherently mean “better”. Don’t know why that idea escapes you. 🤔
@DailyMotor

Did I say I wanted it bigger and heavier? I'd gladly have the car be lighter.

Hey Charlie/(Charley?) I apologize if I completely botched this lol Im currently stuck between an ND2 Miata or the Veloster N! Which is more fun for daily driving? I would get either with a manual stickshift and I really don’t carry much- the Miata’s “impracticality” will work for me. My previous and current ride was a Sentra SE-R and now a Civic Si so I think I need to experience RWD/50:50 weight distribution/lightweight pure sports car next- but is the Veloster N awesome enough to justify a third FWD car in a row?
@DailyMotor
@DailyMotor 3 года назад
Hey Ry! Definitely Miata. If your lifestyle can accommodate a Miata, it's a no-brainer. Veloster N is sweet, don't get me wrong, but the ND2 is a near perfect sports car. However, get some noise cancelling headphones if you plan to do a lot of road tripping! The Veloster will be too similar to your Civic. - Charlie
@Aurablade77
@Aurablade77 3 года назад
@@DailyMotor Thanks! Yes, even though the Veloster has much more power and the exhaust is awesome, I just feel like I’ll get bored of it fast because of the same FWD dynamics. Im leaning towards the RF, though I know there is a weight penalty- I just prefer the security of a hardtop and I think the looks and styling of the RF design will be timeless
@DailyMotor
@DailyMotor 3 года назад
@@Aurablade77 If you're going to own it for a long time, I'd say RF too. But most people I know who owned an RF end up getting a soft top. If you're going to keep it for less than 3 years, I'd say go soft top as well.

@@DailyMotor I just got a 2019 Sport for 23k out the door and it's a perfect second (third) car for me. I love it. I still have my Accord for winter/poor weather.

I actually think $30k tops for a Miata is going to be a very good price, but with options and everything, it can come out around $38k, which is way too much. It does not make sense to be $25k because then it's got more power than a corolla, mazda3 etc. but is a convertible, so it's got to be more than that.
@WizardTerence
@WizardTerence 3 года назад
I never noticed any wind noise worth noting. You can hear other cars but not in an annoying way. More like you outside and life is happening. This car doesn't hide the real world wake up experience. And it's not loud .

Show me a more reliable car for 23,000. The MX sounds like a lot but it's not. It's a very special car that's all about precision, reliability and fun.

6:45 says it all IMO… the MX-5 is drop-dead gorgeous, and sexy inside as well, but it’s all about the perceived experience. If you’re driving casually around town minivans are pulling away at every light. You gotta keep the revs high for a Miata to actually be quick. It doesn’t move on torque. This car is so beloved that criticism is blasphemy, but after a year of climbing in and out, I don’t get the lack of critical analysis on these. Sure they’re great for what they are, but for example; with those cup holders in that position you can’t put your arm down or your elbow hits them (if you say it’s not a problem, put a drink there and change the radio volume, or turn the media selector dial), or… move it to the front position and it’s in your passenger’s knee. Again… it’s a lovely car… a pure experience, but the coined term “Miata is always the answer” bugs me when a Honda Odyssey full of kids is pulling away unless I act like we’re legit racing. 😂
