My 05 silverado is still super shiny under the original coating. Thanks for posting this video. Was doing a complete suspension refresh and I completely freaked out when I saw the soft coating coming off, I had no idea it was a wax coating. Was about to paint it with KBS Rust Seal but thank God I did some more research. I much rather touch-up the waxed areas with a fluid coating that will fuse with the existing layer than to strip off the whole frame to paint it. Thanks!

Thanks again Chad...I have the same truck as you but it's just in LT trim even the same color! I also bought two cans of NOX-RUST for touching up the frame. When I got my new truck home in March 2020 I even dropped the spare tire and heat shield and touched up those areas and sprayed the rear axle too while I had good access. I live in Maine on the coast and we use a ton of road salt for ice storms, I made my own separate speed wrench tool to quickly drop my spare tire so I can wash out that area every Spring, it's amazing how much sand and salt end up on top of the spare steel wheel and how quickly rust can start! You and some of the other towing reviews are the reasons I picked my 2020 3.0 Duramax Diesel, after owning many other full sized GM 1500/2500 this one is a keeper. My last GM diesel truck was a 1983 C2500 with the 6.2, no comparison, my best towing pickup was a 2001 C2500 HD with the 8.1 gasser 3:73 best MPG was 12.5! I'm looking forward to your next GM Engineering interview video and keep up the great work!

GM's wax coating is a joke imo . It's not self healing what so ever . My 2015 was rusted pretty badly after about 4 years of Canadian winters . I know a few guys who use fluid film and coat the entire undercarriage . They have had good experience with that so far .

Just curious on how the paint is holding up around the fenders and lower body panels. I know that the paint isn’t as thick as it used to be. Keep up the good wok👍🏻

Considering the price and the length of time it takes to pay the loan, today’s trucks need to last at least 20 years even in the salt zones Problem is the sheet metal will rot away long before the frame

Why don’t you take it to the dealership? The dealership told me that if the frame shows rust, they will take care of it as long as the vehicle is under warranty. And indeed, Chevy when I took my truck to the dealership applied the greace coating (or what they call it), without any hassle.

Did you check what kind of quality job they did?
@drpanosm
@drpanosm 3 года назад
@@repairvehicle Yes I did. Actually I am a very picky person and they know in advance that I will check everything. In all honesty, and because I know very well how picky I am, the quality of job was very good. But again, they know I am picky and I fuss easily if things are not well done :)

Chad, quick question. On your truck, when looking at it from the front. Is the passenger side, top louver or air shutter thing (behind the grill) missing? Mine is, but my dad has the gas high country his is there. I have the ‘20, 3.0 diesel and mine is missing. Not sure if it fell off or by design. Unfortunately, there are none on the lots down here where I can compare. The service lady showed me a parts catalog and all the louvers were there on the parts book but she didn’t know if there was a difference between the gas/diesel.
@CJIEngineering
@CJIEngineering 3 года назад
Nick, mine is the same. Seems like they need a little bit of air flow, probably to keep the main shutters closed longer, especially in the winter. Just did some more tow testing in the cold and they stayed shut the whole time :). The stepup is amazing IMO. Thanks for the question and for watching.

Thanks for going through this. I have a 2021 GMC 3.0 LM2 that I’m getting ready to coat before our MI winter. I’m considering using fluid film again as I did on my 2018 Jeep Rubicon that had rust when I bought it with 7 miles on it. The frame looked better than brand new after 3 winters with the only downside being a layer gunk that helped protect it, but was also messy when I worked on the underside of the Jeep. Any thoughts or downsides of using FF instead of the OEM wax stuff?

Nh oil is better option
@dadventuring618
@dadventuring618 3 года назад
@@repairvehicle any particular reason or personal experience? Fluid film seems like a very popular option, and lanolin isn’t going to hurt anything like pets or driveways. I’m only asking because I’d like the best option going forward.
@repairvehicle

@@dadventuring618, fluid film causes rubber components to swell up and factory seam sealers. Nh oil, hinder rust and amsoil don't swell up rubber and doesn't dry up. I use them on my 3 vehicles.

I buy black wax coating "undercoating in a can" from www.PetroleumServiceCompany.com as it is a near perfect match to the black wax coating that comes from the GM factory. I check the under body before snow flies every year and apply as needed.

Just by covering over the rust after picking it with your fingers seems ridiculous. That wont stop the rust. I use a great product called woolwax on my chevy .It holds better than fluidfilm snd is lanolin based.

@TonkaFire2019 3 года назад
@@CJIEngineering no, i believe it’s at 30k miles. Over the summer i pulled 7000 pounds and my truck could barely pull it. It makes me wonder if that was the starting point of this issue.
@CJIEngineering
@CJIEngineering 3 года назад
I would say you are on to something. I routinely pull 7000 pounds and have not had any issues. The fuel filter change interval is based on the number of gallons of fuel used and I believe restrictions in the fuel system. I had to change mine around 20k miles. Did they replace your fuel pump? If you don't mind keep me posted.

Did you have a check engine light? Stalling is not typically a symptom of a DEF problem, it could be a few other things like the DPF, EGR, Fuel Pressure, Turbo Boost Controller... Trans seems strange because I can't see the motor stalling if it sticks in a gear or Torque converter locks up, too much torque coming even at low RPMs.

Stuff is useless anywhere (like here in the northwoods of Wisconsin) which sees a REAL winter though. The ONLY way to stave off rust is to religiously wash the underbody during the winter season. No need when it's under 20 but on those occasional streaks of "good" weather when the roads are dry and clear....it MUST be done. But even then, the powder residue stays on the surface and finds it's way into spots no undercoating will reach. You just deal with the fact there will be rust....

You need to do a better job of cleaning before applying the coating. Even light dirt/dust will render the coating useless. Best bet is to pressure wash everything, wait to dry, then apply.

This stuff is complete garbage. Not sure why GM does this on their full size trucks way back since 90s. Go look at a Colorado frame (real paint) and its mint. Spray fluid film over this trash and it turns to a grease. My next truck will come with a painted frame.. this coating peels back and collects salt and moisture behind it and falls off in chunks. Dont bother using the noxrust. Use fluid film or woolwax. Its your best bet to keep the frame from rotting. Yes I am bitter. Lol. My 2016 is rust free as I treat it yearly but it "looks ugly" due to the build up of lanolin. Good luck
