A fallout of the much more stringent BSVI norms coming into effect is that small diesel engined-cars have become unviable, both for carmakers to make and consumers to buy and run. But for the spirited drivers among us, the consequences of this move have been quite positive. A slew of small-capacity turbo-petrol engines are being launched in India this year, to fill the hole that these discontinued diesels left in carmakers' line-up.
The Volkswagen Polo hatchback has seen one such transformation and while it now comes with a smaller engine capacity turbo motor, it hasn't dampened our spirit just yet and we tell you why in this video.

One of the best safety cars, it has a FPS system which helps you from external fire while crashing. The sensor will activate on that time and the engine will get down while crashing and keep the passengers safe. No other cars like swift, i20, tata cant overtake the safety features of this car. Do avoid cheap talks and talk more about the safety and protection of passengers. MPI as well as TSI is good as far as concerned. TSI has 6 speed and MPI has 5 speed transmission which helps you to have a descent mileage as well. The hard plastic inside the cabin is another plus from this car, amazing hardness will keep safe from external impact.... I recommend this car rather than low build quality cars like maruti and hyundai.

The Fiat cars, Linea and Punto also came with FPS. Unfortunately, in India, people want big touch screens.

Polo plastic =2X Suzuki metal .. You can stand up inside plastic of polo door .. Doesn't happen anything to it .. If you did same with others cars there doors will not closed properly.. Laser welding in roof

Agree with you. Rapid is more car for the money. you get a decent sized boot to carry the luggage. I love hot hatches but VW group has disappointed many enthusiasts.

Hi..wat do you suggest if tsi engine is gud to purchase , intent to keep car atleast for longer term say mote than 10 or 11 years....built , performance unmatched but is it feasible to buy naturally aspirated engine or tsi engine for a longer period of time

Most of the comments mention Altroz is the better option. I feel it is rightly said as Altroz is leap ahead design and feature rich. But remember that altroz engine is naturally aspirated with engine delivering just 85ps @6000rpm ... Where the polo is turbo charged which delivers 110ps @ 5000rpm . Also the torque figures of TATA altroz 113Nm vs polo 175Nm is far more inferior. Polo engine is far better technicality with right refinement, which makes polo tad expensive. This shows polo is more fun to ride car compared to Altroz. Also TATA may launch the turbo variants in future which will definitely a cut throat competition to polo...

Apart from the engine..it still is benchmark for build quality in its segment and one segment above..the resounding thud you hear when closing the doors tells a lot..the fit and finish can never match to a Altroz..its way ahead being the segment benchmark..Altroz might have received 5 star safety rating but we should not forget Polo was one of the first car to be tested when it secured a 4 star rating 7 years back..when no other cars from so called best selling manufactures even thought of safety..agree it is 10 years old..but driving dynamic wise no other car can beat it still..be it Japanese or Koreans..Altroz engine is a let down..

This is my opinion. I would prefer better safety, styling/looks, space(boot & seating space) rear view camera, automatic start stop, better handling over just power & torque as it is a complete package in my budget.

@@siddharthbhosale7594 styling/looks are subjective..better handling u cannot get in Altroz when compared to Polo TSI i can assure..only rear seating space is something which VW lacks..other than that i cannot agree on rest of the features u mentioned..safety..what to say..Polo was one of the first cars tested way back in 2013-14 when it secured 4 stars when no other cars from even a segment above even thought of safety..build quality of a tata product is not upto the mark..interiors starts clatter in 3 years..also to mention..safety rating does not reflect a car's build quality..so incase u think that a 5 star rated car will have the best build it is not the case..

@@nikhileshtiwari7300 ... Yes.. Polo build quality was an exceptional thing when tested some years back... But TATA altroz is a challenger as there body structure design has been far more superior in current standards & I don't feel new altroz an inferior to Polo in terms of body build quality. Remember the polo in India is a age old design and In most of the other polo markets or international polo with modren standard is not launched in India & no road map as well... VW cannot upgrade there model lines immediately due to there poor volumes.. .. May be these updates are last of its kind.. If the current launches are not success.. It's better them to pack there bags & vouch for some other markets

Hi Rohit, I'm confused between Polo TSI 2020 and i10 nios. Most of my driving is in the city may be 70% and rest 30 on highways. Build quality, mileage and performance are the points am considering and hence discarded the Maruti Baleno and Swift. Keen to know your recommendation. Thanks.

Baleno RS was not an enthusiasts car -- the TSI was a spectacular csr, and the DSG was fantastic, in convenience and performance. But well VW will milk this car and take away the DSG it will not sell in half as many numbers.

Baleno rs was much lighter, had all 4 disk brakes, slick shifting manual gearbox and better placement of the engine behind the front axle. It accelerated equally quickly and understeered far less compared to the polo. If anything the baleno RS was the true enthusiasts car in the segment. Why do you need a dual clutch in a 100hp hatch? Stupid people. Oh and let's not start to bring in all the reliability issues with VW Tsi motors and Dsg gearboxes... especially when compared to suzuki.

@@Hrithik_Jayanth Top class quality never comes cheap. Quality parts last, hence a yearly / 15 k service interval, VW Uses pure synthetic oil for servicing and not mineral grade oil like maruti.... Hence per service charge annual is 10- 12k per servicing. Maintenance ki itni padi hai toh Alto hi khareedo....

@@borkarms the main reason for the expensibe service is that many of the spares are not locally manufactured which increases the cost. They don't fit you with parts made of gold. And I am not just talking about the cost of service here, if you do some quick research you will find out their service experience sucks and is also a money pit. Maruti isn't the only one with good service. Ford offers waay better service experience than VW here.. So stop being butt hurt without knowing fax

Hi Sir, Sir I am planning to Buy VW polo Mpi trendline petrol 1.0 ltr varient,I am from Hyderabad this varient has onroad price around 7 lakhs,I contacted some of the VW dealers they are giving price discounts around 70k to 80k rupees on onroad price,I am getting it in 6.2 lakh only,sir I am very much confused that is this varient is under power, this is will be my first family car,I drive below 500 kms in a month most of my driving will be in city and sometimes in highway,my height is 5 feet 9 inch ,I drive with family of 2 elder members,please help in picking right choice.

If u taking polo then only buy tsi otherwise leave it,already dated,cramped rear seat and underpowered. Tsi is new vw global engine that's manufacturing in india has powerful,refined and efficient also.

Although its a good car it won't sell in India, because larger hatch backs at the same price point are present in the market. Performance and handling are not the only thing an Indian buyer looks for. Volkswagon is just introducing these models for the sake of being in the Indian car market, hope they don't have huge expectations with this car. Had this come with a larger cabin and little bit spruced up interiors then it would have competed well with Balenos and i20s. On similar lines TATA went wrong with the 1.2 l petrol engine option in Altroz. If they had used the turbo petrol like that in Nexon in the beginning itself then we would have seen better sales. Only God knows on how these Auto Giants go wrong in these things.

Not exactly, cooper(torque converter) used to overtake GTI(DSG). But most cases prove DSG is faster than anything as u said.

Please come home and drive the 1.2 TSI, trust me it has a soul unlike the newer ones. Got the 1.0 mpi as well and its an absolute disaster. However as a practical car for non enthusiasts I personally feel 1.0 is the best.

I have a 1.0MPI on the road! On practical side its a good engine its acceleration is better than grand i10 and high speed stability is much better than Hyundai's sand Suzuki

Himanshu Singh I don’t doubt the high speed stability as VW and all german brands are built to be driven on high speeds. But dare to go quick on a broken road and thats where Suzukis shine. The 1.0 MPI might be a practical engine but there is just not enough power to keep the car propelling.

if the trend continues: VW Polo 2022 (India) : 2 cylinder 800cc with DSG, no airbags(bring your own pillow), no brakes(drive the Flintstones way). Also, the same chassis and body.

That's stupid comment! It was one of the first OEM to make dual airbags as standard! It was the first OEM to bring DSG at this price range! 1.0 TSI is internationally famous one and puts out awesome performance! You are just looking at just engine capacity and have no clue about current downsizing trends!

@@thulasidalam True. 5 years ago VW had everything right with the polo. This old platform with 6 airbags is very safe. But it is 2020. This car is dated. Also, VW is the only one going so hard with the downsizing trend; even plonking 1.4 in Audis. That 1ltr makes horrific sound. It's powerful, but only until the turbo runs out of breath. Polo was a hot hatch with that 1.6 and 1.2. That's why it was highly respected by purists. Now 1ltr with 3 cylinders? No thanks. You can also note that other manufacturers are complimenting the downsizing of engines with reduced weights (don't just consider inferior quality Maruti Suzukis, but others like ford and hyundai as well)

Turbo doesn't run out of breath actually because of its flat torque curve from 1750-4000 rpm after which power peaks at 5000-5500 rpm..That internationally acclaimed TSI engine has so much tech that makes it surprisingly quiet despite being a 3 cylinder engine... If you are just going by the paper figures then i dont have anything else to say.. I am confident because i have recently test driven the car and ordered one for me! Please try it for yourself and find out! Polo still has good safety credentials due to heavy buiid and with 4 star rating its better than current Balenos and i20s...

@@thulasidalam comparing polo to grand i10 and aura? Totally different segment. Also, as I mentioned earlier, other manufacturers are complementing smaller engines with lighter materials. You buy one doesn't mean you have to justify it is the 'best' car. This turbo kicks in late, and I don't want to emphasize again on the weird sounding 3 cylinder. Even if you plonk twin/quad turbos, 3 cylinders are not for purists. This polo with a small engine is not the Polo that purists used to love and drool over. Polo has set a benchmark of its own, but this doesn't make the cut. Enjoy your ride!

Exactly! Figo blu tdci or the S version! You get 100hp which is plenty although lower than the polo's power, you get to reap benefits of diesel efficiency. Also the higher torque figures like 215nm over polo's 170nm gives the figo better in gear acceleration instead of having to red line everytime.

srinivas pennam . This is my opinion. I would prefer better safety, styling/looks, space(boot & seating space) rear view camera, automatic start stop, better handling over just power & torque as it is a complete package in my budget.

@@ramsankar2896 Drove it. Acceleration is a bit flat and power doesn't come in strong until you pass 2,500rpm. in-gear acceleration isn't very strong, with 20-80kph in third taking 12.3sec and 40-100kph in fourth taking 14.7sec.

Volkswagen has lost it completely. It's pathetic product. Looks dated undersize engine with overpower output which won't last long as far as the engine life is concerned. Not smooth ride at all. Guys belivee tioago JTP is much better than this one in every aspect . How do I know ! Coz in my family two set up brothers have bought both these cars one has realised that he had wasted his money. Afcourse you know which one. I have always been a VW fan since I have understood automobiles . DSG had lots of issues but yet no one matches it's performance. In Europe the current generation polo is out on the road which is wider & longer & more modern but in India they are still producing 11 year old design. On top of that now they have jumped into cheap competition & thus producing 1 liter turbo charged engines even for sedans. By the way I have a 9 year old VW vento automatic & I plan to keep it for another 4/5 years atleast knowing the fact that the car that I drive is almost a vintage one.
