2021 Costuming Recap + Sewing Goals for 2022 | Silk fabric haul!! 

No pressure, but I would love to see you doing modern and children’s projects!

One of the things I love about your videos is your honesty! Feel free to share whatever you are working on, even if it isn’t historical costuming. I’d love to see some modern sewing or kids sewing or closet organizing. A lot of us are here for YOU, so don’t stress about content or deadlines!

Definitely don’t work so hard that you burn out. I would love to see whatever you are sewing even if it isn’t costume related :) and you could also break bigger projects into multiple videos. Sewing takes time and it is okay to reflect that in multiple videos for a big project

That purple silk would make a really pretty regency spencer jacket. There are some surviving extant examples, I would love to see that one day! It would be beautiful with your refashioned/fixed regency dress. And you should totally make that sacque back dress!

Actually, you sewing your everyday clothes and re-doing old clothes to fit your daughter sounds much more interesting than any historcal projects you mentioned. Hopefully you can make videos about that too :)

1 yard of fabric works great for vests/waistcoats/caplets! Or fun facings for jackets or hems, or contrasting ruffles! Take all the time you need! I would also be interested in seeing modern sewing, if thats something you want to film.

As a note I would watch anything you sew. Don't be afraid to even just have a video showing what sewing you plan and then the final products later. I like you more than the stuff! Thank-you for what you do it is motivating. I have little ones at home so I understand, we love you!

I love your content so much. I would much rather have you, once a month, than see you burn out. You bring a breath of fresh air into this space, and I think it may be partly because I know I'm seeing just one lovely facet of a person with a very rich, full private life. Thank you for taking care to safeguard that.

For that purple fabric I'd make a summer spencer with a matching reticule. That other piece os 1 yd woud be nice for a regency dress for your daughter. Refashioning your chothes into children clothes could make a great video. My plans for this year: 1. Use as much as I can of the fabrics I have, if possible "sew a lot and buy nothing". 2. - a short and a long walking skirt for historybounding, and probably a summer one. - Some historical inspired knitting. - A complete 14th century archer outfit I have comitioned. - Carnival costumes for me and my children if Covid-related rules let carnival happen. - A regency shortrobe, skirt and apron for working class. - A 12th century dress/tunic for a knight. - A wimpke to go with the veil I just finished. - a Sait Brigotta's coif. - a new 12th century dress for me - open slits in my daughter's old chemise and make it into a "new" one for my son. - a new 12th century dress/tunic for my son. - some other regency and/or medieval things deppending on event needs.

Wowww that purple is such a great color! Dark purples are my favorite.

I subbed to your channel not necessarily because I aspire to making costumes I'll never wear, but because you approach the creating of garments with humility and curiosity and historical knowledge that allows me to learn the basics of garment construction so that my own style can be realized. Thank you for doing what you do!

Oh and I’d love you you to show all of your making. Even the modern stuff and stuff for your kiddo. I also like the long game of one part might get finished in a video, but not the whole thing. It might just be me, but I love seeing the full process. It makes it more attainable in my mind knowing its going to take longer than I think it will.

Your channel is one of my favourite in the youtube sewing niche, every time I watch your videos it feels like I'm on the board of your sewing adventure. It's really relaxing to watch your videos because your editing and voice are just so wonderful and I wish you a lot of happy sewing (be it modern or historical) in the future!

I fully support taking breaks and moving away from the relentless grind of posting on a regular basis! After all, this is supposed to be fun :) I think you should use that purple and black shot fabric to make your fancy Victorian sewing apron! With black tassles and lace trim maybe!

Condolences for the end of The Nap. If it's any help - my Mum used to make me lie in bed even though "I wasn't tired" so she could have a break from the wild kinetic storm that was my toddlerhood. Again. Deepest condolences. So glad you took a sewing break and so glad you enjoyed it. To misquote King Fu Panda - "Ah, my old enemy... bust adjustments...". I'm short. I'm curvy. I'm busty. I have a sway back. And I'm still learning how to make friends with... duh, duh- duuuh... ze bust full of adjustments. Sigh. Hello 2022 - apparently you, me and FBA's are going to be spending time together. Allot of flippin' time. Humbug. And, Meh. That stripped taffeta is Stunning. And the fabric for the sack-back... Oh. I vote yes for sewing aprons and hats. Don't forget those half-finger / fingerless gloves would also be great for the stash pile. As for the channel stuff - who says you can't make your own contemporary clothing as a project. Or alter pieces to fit the wee one. If you want to get fancy you could reference the history of a woman's blouse, but just sharing your knowledge about fit and proportions is a bonus for me. Because bust adjustments on a princess seam are a puzzle at the best of times. As for me. I feel down a rabbit hole again. Leatherwork - the boys of The YT have been holding out on us because it's kinda really easy (mostly because darts don't enter into the picture - if you can saddle stich and glue stuff then you can do leathercraft). I got inspired by a bunch of Loic Pretempt videos about the Chanel atelier - all the sewists wear this leather pin bag that hangs from a chain around their neck. Each have personalized it to their own needs. Want. Need. Want. The few tools and thread are in the mail. And I've already dismantled some old leather pieces for parts. If theatre ever becomes a thing again I can wear it backstage when I'm volunteering for the local armature theatre company... Other than that, I have a whole bunch of skirts and blazers from the 50's that I want to make up for everyday wear. I need a wardrobe. Hopefully by the end of the year, I will have one that actually fits me. Huzzah. Oh. And maybe start my own historic/vintage sewing channel. YES! Accessories are so important to an outfit and you made so many wonderful ones! I've also been trying to use more of the fabric in my stash as well.

This fabric haul gave me SO MANY IDEAS! I have a few pieces that are similar in color or pattern. I helps to hear other's plans! You do as you feel you need to, making wise. Remember, you could take several videos to make an outfit. We don't need one and done. I wouldn't mind seeing the clothes you make for your regular wardrobe, either. Sorry that your baby no longer believes in napping. Don't worry, it will return in her teens. Mine have no problem taking naps. It's actually going to bed that they won't do. As far as sewing, I'm, apparently, working on a long term plan to finish my UFOs. Right now, I am finishing all the UFOs that are NOT written on my white board. It's annoying, but stuff is getting done -- just not the stuff I've planned to get done. Best of Luck in the New Year!

Not going to lie when you showed us that purple my immediate thought was Victorian/history bounding style waistcoat but I'll be interested in seeing whatever you make from it, it's a beautiful colour

Life happens while we're busy making other plans. You do what you need to do. Somebody else suggested using the Purple for a Spencer. Great idea and I wonder if you have the Hamilton Spencer pattern. That would be awesome IF there's enough yardage for it. I have a few projects in mind for the coming year. First is to finish my 1880s corset. I just need to finish the boning and the trim and I'm done. But I keep procrastinating partly because of chair issues. I need to fix it but that's yet another thing I'm procrastinating about. so clearly I need to stop procrastinating. 🤣🤣🤣🤣

Yeah, I notice channels that do lots of big historical projects do monthly videos, al la Bernadette Banner, or just do vlogs that take less editing. Either way, I really enjoy your style and teaching process.

For the one yards, maybe a color blocked spencer jacket? My go to plans for 1 yard of fancy fabric is a waistcoat lol.

I would use that purple fabric as a binding/accent fabric for something that is mostly a teal shade that is in the same depth/saturation range as the purple. Maybe even throw in a darker chartreuse as a third color, to add some pop. I just like those three colors together.

Once a month is just fine. So happy to watch your videos whenever they come out. As for plans in 2022 I want to expand my Regency wardrobe with a basic white gown, a spencer and dressing my bonnet. I have already begun making my first Edwardian walking skirt and hope to make a cape and a shirtwaist. if I can get half of this done I will be very pleased. Best wishes.

I love watching your videos. Whenever you get them out is good. After my last two years of trying, but failing at getting anything made because of overwhelm, I’m working on getting a properly fitting bodice block pattern. Yes I followed your full bust adjustment videos. They’re great. I also account for my sway back. Then after that we’ll see. I’m literally breaking things down to the smallest goal possible at a time. One thing a day, and finally I’m seeing some progress and not freaking out and walking away. That’s kind of been my norm with costuming. If I have a base though that’ll help. At least that’s what I’ve been doing since I had sudden and necessary surgeries last October. It wasn’t fun. That’s why I vanished for a bit.

We would love to see the end results of all the other things you sew. You also don’t need to have a completed project in each video. Have fun and enjoy.

I loved the remaking videos last year. Also the FBA videos were a game changer for me for pattern drafting/adjusting. Also, somehow I didn’t realize you were in Texas! Hello from a fellow Texan, I’m in the San Antonio area.

I know that you already have a pair of 18th century mitts made in wool, but they also wore mitts in the summer time to protect their arms from the sun and those were made in silk and could be lined in linen. Just a suggestion.

I am happy to hear you are stepping back to balance your life better! I'd rather have rarer happy Dixie videos than a lot of burned out Dixie videos :) As for my 22 plans... I am currently finishing up my 1840s wrapper, and as I like doing everything in the wrong order I guess my next step would be making undergarments for it. I do wear historical-ish clothes day to day and have some not-period accurate but will do undergarments and as this is a wool dress I need it now, not in the summer, so the wrong order makes sense... somewhat. That, and I hope I can make summer version of the same dress so I have comfy working clothes for hot weather as well!

Thank you for sharing your sewing goals, which are very close to mine. Resist urge to buy more cloth, focus on using large stash of uncut fabric and unused patterns. Including the cloth and historic pattern I bought over 40 years ago. Yup, still sitting there waiting

Have you ever thought to make fashion dolls as I understand it little girls dolls were dressed in the fashion of the day. Especially with the smaller yardage. It’s a thought. This year I am going to try and put some of my paintings in regional exhibition. Well it’s a plan, wether I actually go through with my introverted personality. We shall see. Good luck😻😻

Why not incorporate some of your costumes into your "normal" wardrobe? Perhaps nor the fancy ballgowns, but the everyday wear costumes could certainly be worn day to day with your normal mundane clothes. I do that, myself, to supplement my own wardrobe as I create a wardrobe that actually fits me properly. For your smaller pieces of fabric, I would suggest making things like reticules or pockets, perhaps a housewife or two even. I like the ideas you have for the rest of your silks. My main goal for 2022 is to work on and complete a three piece Tudor outfit of a linen smock, a brocade embroidered kirtle and a wool over gown for the Foundations Revealed competition that ends in February of 2023. We're lucky this year, in that we have the entire year to complete our project instead of just November to February like would be normal for the competition. If that were the case I would chosen something different for my entry (lol). I also have two 18th Century petticoats, a pair of 18th Century stays and an 18th Century skirted bodice in mind for this year as personal projects, as well. --Lyssa WA, USA
