Clutch-less motorcycles are a bit of a foreign thing for me. Personally, I was very keen to see where modern technology stood for automatic motorcycles. As Honda has been developing their dual clutch transmission longer than anyone else, it only seemed right to try out their system on their recently updated Africa Twin. This 2021 Africa Twin is the Adventure Sports model. Watch my full review to see and hear there DCT in action!

Thanks for checking out this review of the 2021 Honda Africa Twin Adventure Sports! What do you think of the transmission? Is it worth the while to you?

100% worth the DCT. You have so many more options. Full auto drive " lazy". For hiway cruising and great fuel mileage. Three levels is sport mode which is crazy fast in three. You can also tune the shift patterns in "User modes" if you need to. I definitely didn't. You can override any auto mode and shift down or up with finger paddles. And then you can also go full manual with finger paddles. Best of all when in city traffic it's incredibly easy to stop/go. I'm a dirt biker and sports guy owner but love the DCT for my 2020 ATASes. I love the transmission, but as much love the electronic suspension! Honda outdid themselves on the suspension!!! Happy trails :-)🇨🇦

I'm kinda struggling with mine - the fear of the dreaded whisky throttle has me very tense riding on mine, as I had a near WT moment, instinctively grabbed the clu-OH NO!-the front brake! And got dumped. First bike I've fallen off from an unforced error. I've been knocked off by a gormless driver but never fallen off a bike, 'til now, and that's made me so much more tense.

I think if they added a manual clutch on the left or a rear brake control on the left handlebar that would be good. There's no way to save it if you overcook it as it is.

Actually there's a thing: if you do WT it, what would happen if you pressed N to select neutral? Would that save you before it wheelies off into traffic?

Very nice review. My only concern to pick one up is everyone’s reviews HATE the instrumental panel - stating it’s overly complex and the programming is problematic requiring a learning curve etc. 🤷🏻‍♂️. I guess I’ll find out shortly.

I got user 1 set up for the way i like it on road, user 2 off road and very rarely use any other mode apart from tour on the long trips when I want relaxed cruising and best economy

Thanks for sharing with us your review. Did you experience any incident where the engine stalls at low speed due to the DCT ?

I've heard it touted that this is one thing you never get: that DCT is especially good for off-road because it never stalls. If it feels it's going to, it declutches itself so you're in neutral like when he stopped at the junction. Traction control and ABS need to be deactivated off road, and they're in an awkward menu to get at - I think if I was re-engineering the UX I'd have it so you hit a button to deactivate these, like on the non-TFT older models, and have it show a warning light to let you know - but stalling at low revs isn't supposed to be a thing. If you do encounter this it may be you need to do a DCT reset, which is a kind of Konami keypress for DCT that recalibrates it & sets it back to factory settings. They recommend you do this every 2000 miles anyway.
