@@UhOhUmm Agree. In a tesla you have to dig through 3 different menus just to change where the air is blowing. Even worse, the window wipers are dug into menus too. Feels like Tesla is getting let off wayyy to easy here.

@@307skylake7 You literally just tap the fan icon in the middle and you can control everything from there, as for the wipers you push the wiper button in and it goes into auto, or alternatively in that moment you can select your manual speed on the menu which conveniently pops up on the screen. I don't see the issue.

Agree. I thought the Germans were supposed have their engineering together. The poor response of the infotainment system and lack of a simple knob makes this a non-contender.

iPad screens cost a lot of money. They’re as cheap as possible for most vehicles.

@@TwinTurboOnly Sort of the reason why. They have to use screens and tech that can hold up to all the constant vibrations, shock and random tension forces. An iPad isn't rated to not shatter when you hit a bump at 20, 30 or 75 mph. It also isn't rated to withstand the amount of dust, varied temperatures and other issues the tech in a car is going to experience over 3-5 years. Sure, it MAY be okay through that. But it's not specifically rated and built for it, like most of the tech in cars are. Auto companies could invest the extra money to bring these screens up to par while meeting standards....but there's not a lot of incentive. People are still buying the cars and Auto companies aren't fully in tune with how tech companies progress.

For 45k you sure don't get a whole lot. Incredibly difficult to sell this to a broad audience. It's obviously made for the electric car buyers which is still a fairly niche market. The electric car buyers need to ask for more. This is compact car levels of interior.

Right? It feels like a total poverty spec Corolla interior, but I do have to say that the ID.4 has a very luxurious drive to it. Looking at EVs I picked the Niro EV because of features for price and how it feels like a regular car that happens to be electric.

As far as all 4 windows, press the "rear" switch til it blinks, then you can lower or raise all 4 at once. Possible with key fob as well.

I remember when Honda solely replaced the volume knob with a touch-sensitive slider for one model year, people went wild about that, and they reverted it back to a knob the following year. Meanwhile, Volkswagen's designers... what even 😭 I get it's an electric and it needs to have its technology showcased, but BUTTONS! We need buttons!

Hey a german here that works in a dealership that also has a lot of VWs. Over here they're mediocre but everybody buys them because of patriotic (=country loving) reasons. They Toyotas and Hondas are rare here because they're seen as cheap plastic rice/hybrid cars most people that don't know anything about cars say "Why would you need a Toyota or Honda, we have Mercedes why need a reliable brand then when you can have reliablity and styling all in one." To go back to your point tho ^^ I wouldn't try them out yet. Give it 3-4 years to see how things turn. I'm also grateful that you're completly different when it comes to reliablity problems, you have internet pages, the media report about it, here it's just your own experience and the advices from other people that you can take..Sad but true.

The best EV which brings back logic to automobiles. Love the VW. By the way, you can roil down or up all the four windows at a time by pressing on the 'rear' button for 3 secs and pulshing the buttons after that.

Thanks for always having great reviews! I’m a visually impaired car guy… I know what a combo! The driving experience as well as driver assist safety systems are equally important for me. I’m considering a Hyundai Sonata limited because as you’ve said, their system is one of the best in mainstream market. I am also looking at a Mk8 GTI when they go on sale. Does VW’s system function similarly or worse? 🙏🏻 thanks!

You can roll all 4 windows down by pressing down and holding the rear button and it’ll flash then you can just lower the drivers side to control all 4 windows

It would be neat to see what are the most popular buttons/apps that people click on behind all these electronics and touch-only controls behind the main screen. And then, bring them to normal button controls too. Like all of us are guessing that having climate control and volume/radio controls as physical dials is much better since we always use them. But what other features are most commonly used there? Maybe add a handful of programmable physical buttons that you can specify based on your most used selectors?

That's a great idea. Unfortunately, I think VW removed physical controls to cut costs, so I doubt they'd care.

@@josht717 Sad if this is true. I mean, cutting costs - I get it. But physical controls can be an esstial part of your product. And, how much of a cost % of the total vehicle are they really? Would a customer care to pay $45,543 or $45,553? What if the customer does get the use of out these buttons? Again, I can think of many other things first to cut costs before removing physical buttons like volume, AC, or window controls.

@@victorkonon VW announced last year that they are aiming for aggressive cost cutting on fixed costs, like labor, by 5%, and cutting 7% for costs of materials, corporation-wide. It's something like $32B USD in cuts. Using touch interfaces makes controls more scalable between different models. Comparing the mk8 Golf to the mk7 should be enough to illustrate the obvious differences very clearly.

Driving dynamics aside, this doesn’t rank too well for me unfortunately. Between all the interior rattles and difficult UI, I’d rather have a Mach-E, Tesla, or something from Hyundai.

@@oni7729 Interior is great. After 50k miles only a slight rattle in the very rear of the car. Other than that it's very high quality. Rides nice. Some people are compelling about no physical buttons but in the world of smartphones and touch screens it's easy to get used to. Oh and the turning radius! Better than any car /I have ever owned. One full turn and the u turn is in the closest lane.

I test drove the ID4, it looks much better in person. It's very classy and mature looking IMO. A very good EV for people who don't want to go "full" EV and have one tablet to control everything like tesla. And all of the touch-sensitive controls weren't that bad, I guess they're a preview for the MK8 GTI/R controls.

Oh Gosh, you got to deactivate lane keep assist every time? I'm pretty sure this car would immediatly get on my nerves. Just watching the video, I hate it. Good review, however. It saves me time watching for this car next time I shop around: i'm just not interested. I tapped out at "I was trying to set the cruise control...and I think I figured it out". It should be easy and simple. Now, how much time did he spend looking at his wheel instead of looking where he should be looking, which is on the f'n road?...

The smoking Tire channel mentioned this specifically. While one of them was driving they started a clock and paused it every time he looked away from the road trying to figure out something specific he ended up spending about 10 seconds not looking at the road while trying to figure out how to change a setting. Absolutely ridiculous. That's the problem with gloss blacks haptic feedback stuff there's no tactile response that can grab a volume knob and do that while not looking at the road. Toyota's old fashioned cruise control stock that came out of the steering wheel again I don't have to look for it to find it you find it by touching press the end of the stock to turn it on down to set up to accelerate it's easy I don't know why they're doing this kind of stuff. And it's not just Volkswagen

I bought a 2019 GLI brand new. It had rattles in the doors and another rattle whenever I took my foot off the gas pedal. I know it’s not a fancy car but my mothers Chevy Cruze didn’t have a single rattle.

my 2017 jetta sport i bought used with 30k miles has no rattles, strange, i did test drive a 2019, the interior did seem cheaper quality and workmanship than the previous mk6

A ground up EV design should have a frunk. Sliders and such don't particularly bother me as I use voice commands for temperature and wheel controls for volume. Fast and responsive screen is a must have in today's market but I'm glad they screwed up cause I'm not a VW fan. I'd like to know the cost difference between a 200hp motor vs a 300hp motor on an EV. I have powerful motors on my Tesla because Elon made that a priority on a Tesla vehicles.

No. Only Teslas can use Tesla superchargers. With a J1772 adapter, you can use a Tesla Destination Charger.

You can get very gently used ones for a fantastic price right now, too. It's such a great daily drive, but make sure you test out the seats before purchasing... they are super uncomfortable.

If you have seen the kbb reviews or the redline review VW had already said this car isn’t meant to compete with the model y due to the model y power or Mach e will smoke the id4 in terms of performance. The ID4 competitors are currently the RAV4 or Kia Nio.
