It’s worth it just to watch until the end on this one 🤣⚡️ - Super impressed with Lisa’s ability to jump head first into an EV, in an area where she covers big mileage with limited charging infrastructure, and have full confidence in her driving!

Considering how much she drives, she probably has a really good feel for the vehicle's range and knows where most of the charging points are by memory now. That goes a long way to removing range anxiety. There is no particular need to use the phone's or vehicle's systems when everything is in your head. It might be a bit generational. I notice that younger generations seem to really like using the phone and map functions even when going to places they have been to before. But us older generations grew up without such conveniences, so we tend to rely on apps only for places we haven't been to before, or maybe if we need an ETA calculation, and not much else. One is a bit more aware and attentive to the surroundings when not being led around by an app. I think the whole concept of range anxiety has become a bit overblown in popular media. It really doesn't take very long before it disappears. -Matt

@@junkerzn7312 I live in a suburb of Montréal, QC, Canada so being in the younger generation, I will always put Waze. There is so much construction here and sometimes not putting waze for just a 15 minutes drive, it can become a 25 minute drive, additional detour, etc... Awesome video. Maybe there is some faith for my mom ever driving an EV altough I still think that requiring an app or a card (it's required at the Hydro Quebec EV charging stations) will be a pain for older folks. Hopefully they bring plug and charge some day.

I’m impressed with what she *wasn’t* saying. As a new EV owner, she had no complaints over a gas powered car. To her it’s just a normal car that gets her from point a to point b. So, I see this as a win especially for the VW ID4. Other than the firmware crash, she’s had zero issues. She didn’t even mention running out of charge, ever. So that’s amazing given that she’s a new EV over with not a lot of charging infrastructure around her. Range anxiety has not been a thing for her, even though she drives a ton.

@junkerzn7312

Nice little one-year review. I'm quite happy with my ID.4 AWD. I only have a few thousand miles on it so far. I did decide to install an L2 charger in my driveway. So far I've been using 80% as a target. We only charged it up to 100% once for a trip (which I wound up not needing to do, but it was early on before I got a feel for the range). So far I haven't had to Fast DC charge it at all. * The OTA update capability requires probably one more software update at the dealer a little later this year for (I think) version 2.4 or something like that before it will start working OTA. It isn't in the U.S. yet. It is in Europe. My guestimate for the reason is that they are going to leverage the phone app to reduce their cellular costs, so the vehicle's own cellular capabilities can't be used to bootstrap the feature. * The oldest software (that came with the original 1st edition) had a truckload of bugs in it, which is what hit Lisa. When VW started shipping the AWDs, their base software was a later version and most of the bugs were fixed. I've only had one or two minor software glitches myself which didn't affect driving and cleared after a reset. * BUT there is a common 'electrical system malfunction' issue with all current ID.4's which is a coolant pump issue. It hit me a few weeks ago. Basically, the coolant pump starts to fail (possibly due to contamination or air in the coolant loop as shipped by the factory). the car notices it and gives the above error, it self-clears on every start but typically once the coolant pump has gotten to that point the warning turns on again almost immediately after every start (within 60 seconds). The car will usually still run just fine, but it needs to be brought into the dealer and fixed on-warranty or you risk the pump completely failing and then the car would become a brick until it is fixed. So I played with it for a week in that state, researched it a bit on the internet, and messed around with my VEEPEAK OBD-II unit to see what kind of faults it was reporting (they faults were mostly mis-translated by the app as a contactor fault), thenI took it into the dealer and they replaced the pump and flushed the coolant. Picked it up the next day and all was well again. Other than that, the software works pretty well. It is slow starting up but I don't have to wait for it to boot. I can start driving within 2 seconds of getting into the vehicle. By the time I get to the end of the block all the systems are booted up and running. The automatic functions (like automatically turning on the seat heats in the morning when it is coldoutside) and other shortcuts are pretty nifty. The car-play overrides are very convenient. Phone-call handling is good. Music is good. Radio works great. Car-play integration is awesome, I don't even bother taking the phone out of my pocket most of the time. I don't change the station very often so usually I just get in the car and swipe-up the volume and I'm done. I totally get that the charging port door might have gotten torqued. It's a pretty weak hinge and a bit flimsy. Which is unlike the rest of the car which is pretty German-solid. Well, except for a spot or two on the panels in front of the front door which you can't lean on without it deforming (it pops back when you take your weight off of it). That was a bit unexpected, but not a show stopper. Mine is the ID.4 AWD, max-trim with the kings red. It looks awesome! My brother and I put a ceramic coating on it. I might black-out the chrome though. The creaking happens on my ID4 too, typically when the vehicle is held stopped on a hill. It comes from the drum brake in the rear. I'm fairly sure it is due to the car firmware. The car seems to have a hill-holder function (doesn't immediately go backwards when you let off the brake). But basically it appears to be transferring function from your foot to an algorithm. The thing is, if I just stay stopped on the hill I get three or four instances of creaking and the car shifts a few millimeters each time. An interesting little quirk. I would like a spare tire too. I don't like these goo repair kits. My 2000 A6 had a full-sized spare and I took advantage of it at least four times over those 20 years. Having it saved an enormous amount of time. I haven't had a flat on the ID.4 yet. I think I am going to buy a mini-spare and a jack from tire-rack, though, to at least have the option. -Matt

I just watched the video today (May 16). I'm surprised that Kyle hasn't edited out the LGB comment by now (1 week after the video dropped). Totally unnecessary to leave that comment in unless this channel wants to go political. I guess Kyle and the gang must not fully appreciate what an emotionally charged political environment we are currently experiencing. Laughing it off is not the right approach if you want to continue the channel's focus on EV's and not political division. (Oh, and driving at 50 mph will greatly improve range!)

Apologies if this was already mentioned in the comments, but Kyle I'm surprised that you said that because the area where they live doesn't have the faster chargers, they wouldn't be able to take advantage of the capabilities of the Hyundai or the Kia. I went from a 38 minute 10% to 80% to 25 minutes when I went from the ID.4 to the Ioniq 5 on the same 150kw chargers.

Great video--aside from the LGB comment at 20:31, especially since "B" is working on improving the charging infrastructure and EV tax incentives that they seem to want, lol. Edit: I got distracted by LGB and missed the opportunity to say something constructive. I guess that's the point of wedge phrases like that. What I should have said is that I like OOS because of the unbiased EV content that they provide and because they steer clear of the political stuff. The LGB comment was jarring because it was completely inconsistent with all of the other content that they've done. And now myself and others are compelled to offer a counterpoint to 5 seconds of the video at the expense of the other 25 minutes of excellent content.

I live near Wilmington & work in Wilmington. It was very cool to see familiar landmarks in this video. I tried to buy my ID.4 from the dealer in Wilmington but the salesman didn’t know anything about them and wasn’t interested in selling a car to me I guess. I got mine from Charlotte. I had the coolant issue and was very impressed with the Wilmington dealer’s service department though, they were knowledgeable, gave me a loaner without an issue, had my car back in 3 days. Very unlike some horror stories I’ve seen in the Facebook ID.4 groups I’m in. I think if more people looked at EV’s as just cars, like Lisa (and me), there would be less animosity between people. To EV or not to EV is not a political question. Just choose the best car for you and be done with it.

My wife has a 2021 VW ID.4 she got last July. It’s her daily driver to and from work. She’s put about 8,000 miles on it so far. Yesterday for Mother’s Day she and a friend spent the day in Napa. Just hopped in, picked up her friend, and took off. Not a care or worry. Last March I got my Model 3SR+. Our family (2adults and 2 teenage boys) went on a 10 day road trip from Sacramento to Souther California (San Diego and LA) in the car. No issues at all. After that trip, all her range anxiety disappeared! (She likes the more traditional UI that VW has.) It was time to replace her aging Camry, and she jumped on the chance to get the VW. Her confidence in her car, and her enjoyment of it, are equal to any ICE vehicle she’s ever had. I’d say more so. Voted for Biden and would do so again! Florida man was the worst POTUS ever. I have had an identical ID$ FE for about 2 weeks longer than your MIL. 24740 miles so far. My biggest complaint so far is the MyVW car app closely followed by the lack of software updates and lack of a spare tire(my right rear tire got "screwed" literally twice). As to hogging the 350 chargers at EA, they are often the only charger that will give you full charging speed. Last night I pulled into a 6 charger EA station. Two were dead and one of the two 350s were occupied. I pulled into a 150 with 12% and got a whopping 36 kW. A woman with a brand new Kia EV6 pulled in to the only working 350 charger. She couldn't get the EA app to work as the charger had a software issue but I showed her how to use Apple Wallet to initiate. I stopped watching by the time she had reached 148 kW. Anyhow she got charged up in about 20 minutes. Moral of the story ID4s might be on the 350s because EA won't maintain the 150s.

My worst charging experience was been with EA. So many failed to initiate plus time on the phone with tech support to reboot the charger, to no avail. In my experience the most well kept network is EVGO and Chargepoint. Someone should rank these charging services based on customer experience. OOSR perhaps? 🤞

What would Lisa have to do if the malfunction happened on her outside sales job? Say two or three hundred miles from home. That would have bee a great inconvience. A very expensive tow bill.
@LarryZamba
@LarryZamba 2 года назад
Wrong. If a tow truck stops by, it’ll take her to the nearest charging station not drive 300 miles. There’s electricity everywhere by the way. Find a place that’ll let you plug into 240 or even 110 and she can juice up. Or they can go to a proper charging station. And some tow trucks now carry the equivalent of a couple of gallons gas with a charger. Zap it for a while and off she goes.

No wonder she gets 280 at 100% charge ROFL - driving 35 in a 45. In NJ I'd get either a birdie or get rear ended! I love my 1st Edition as well - same ext / int color, at 14K right now - longest road trip - NJ to New Orleans, found EA chargers to minimize my travel costs (had to stay an extra day at hotels vs a gas car traveling the same distance). Had the electrical malfunction thing come up on day 1 of owning this car - just kept driving figuring if it dies on day 1, I have a good lawsuit to pursue, turned out it was just software glitch - lock the car walk away so it doesn't sense the key (for 5 mins), it'll reset.

Looks like the ride is very bumpy. The lack of a spare is a common foolhardy design failure. It might be possible this couple would have been happier in a RAV4. Thanks for the frank evaluation. Really disappointed with the momentary political statement in an otherwise great video. It added no value to how we can expand our EV infrastructure and improve EV cars. What it did was further emphasized division rather than finding common ground. We still have policies that give benefits to oil and gas companies and not enough to make electrification affordable and feasible.
