Love the polo, it has a special place in my heart as the car that my mum drove all my childhood, so it’s great to see it getting such praise. Also, next year I’ll be able to drive myself, so guess what I’ll be asking for for!

I have a 95 TDI one with 5-spd manual. Incredibly economical, comfy for one lanky dude like myself and everything's easy to use. The engine is more suited for a DSG though, but it's super quiet in there unless I boom the Beats audio system. Which is a bad choice if you value boot space though. Overall good car, no need for a Golf.

I agree, this car is a little lower to the ground, but the T-cross is the more rational choise. And I am 197 cm tall so I know T-cross is spacious. As is the Polo, but not as much.

Not sure what it is about this car but it appeals to like...first time younger drivers and students etc. Not sure if it's partly the parents buying them their first car and think a Polo is a safe all round option (which does happen) or also that they are seen as 'cool'? I know saying cool isn't cool but you know what I mean.

Fun review... but I'd probably go for the SEAT :-) As an aside, work pushed me back to a hatch and after a few months I don't think I see the point in going back to an SUV. It seems as practical in real world terms but drives better and is more economical.... just my tuppence worth :-)

Will you do a BMW M340i? I can't work out if it's worth to spend that much and if you get a proper car. How different would it be compared to something like Octavia?

@@drawwithdan5821 Asked was a 3series - RWD. Octavia is a boosted Golf - nothing more and nothing less. Nothing only similar to a BMW platform of conventional layout (even with AWD). AWD from VAG is crap - a hang-on system which "emergency only" with a normally fwd car. BMW is permanent as engine and gearbox are in-line.

Used to own a Polo bread an in the late 90's. Did the job but I hated that car it was soooo dull. I have a feeling I would feel the same about this one.

I am still thinking about the demographic target group. I have a strong feeling that 'kids' would go for funny crossovers (t-coss?), or at least Ibiza, something more lifestyle-ish (unless your dad surprises you with polo on your 18). I think that all this crossover style hits A and B segment really hard. If you add reversing camera to the crossover, which is often not available in hatch (while it doesn't provide so much better visibility), even for a city car, crossover sounds like a better choice. I agree that Polo can be a very good car, I am just thinking.. who will buy it?

People that don’t need all that space, or want to look very old, will buy this. The Ibiza is not as good value as the Polo because it costs more but has less equipment. People like the Polo because of its timelessly stylish nature, and you can get a reversing camera on the Polo of you want.

@@oliverstemp9132 I cannot discuss that I am no longer considered as a young person, but in my (very) late 30' I enjoy sitting into SUV/crossover so much more than into my 'sporty family estate' ;) BUT.... I checked the configurator and there is an issue there. to get a t-cross with a manual A/C and emergency braking you have to spend £20,410 while you get it as standard in Polo for £17,125, So that's in fact 3k of difference (which is huge for 17k car). adding 3k extra for 30k car sound different than an upgrade for 17k Polo. In that case, I could also stay with Polo.

Who will buy it? Boring old fogeys like me, who live on their own (there are a lot of us around), don’t like crossovers, don’t need that much space, are crap at parking, want something reasonably comfortable, and are too timid/poor/mean to try something a bit larger and more premium like a Mercedes, BMW or an Audi.

Statistics indicate that on average one person every six months remembers Crazy Town and thinks "oh yeah, that was a thing". Although me acknowledging this means that at least two of us have already thought about it within a six month time frame. Another review of a ‘small’ car that doesn’t mention how big it is these days. Mk 1 Polo was 40cm shorter, 20cm narrower and weighed 50% less than the current thing (now bigger than Mk2 Golf). How else did the Mighty VAG create enough room for the Up!? It’s no wonder it has the space it does now, and that Geoff Capes could lift the old car. Great car, well built, but small? Not any more...

@@livc444111 Then it’s just a VW advertising channel. I thought it was supposed to guide you on the range of cars available so you could go and lease something with Vanarama. Perhaps if other manufacturers got more of a look in with these online car review channels, they would also get more sales.

I’ve followed Mark since Honest John days, but if he’s sick of saying the same thing about VW infotainment systems repeatedly then that tells you something in itself.
