We review the 2021 Toyota Land Cruiser Heritage Edition. This is the end of a generation, and we discuss the details and why people love it. While other products like the Cadillac Escalade and Lincoln Aviator, BMW, and Mercedes raise the tech game, Toyota keeps everything old school. Others to consider are the Audi Q7, Lincoln Navigator, BMW X7, and Mercedes G Wagen.

We have an LC V8 in Dubai and it is the most reliable car in the world with the least depreciation. I regularly sit in one in Africa with 600k+ on the clock and the interior still doesn't make noise going over horrible roads. These are tanks!

People love these trucks because they harken back to a time where products were built to last. The age of tv and appliance repair shops, shoe cobblers and hardware stores - a time where people fixed what they had instead of just replacing it. There will come a time, and perhaps it's already here, where people will long for the agency they and their ancestors once had and will curse the trojan horse of convenience that has eradicated it.

You can either get conspiratorial about greedy companies trying to increase profit margins with a strategy of "planned obsolescence", or you can just look at the fact that environmental regulations have ironically incentivized companies to design products that don't last and are thrown out, and consumers literally can't afford the old "buy once cry once" purchasing strategy even if they wanted to. Everyone lives paycheck to paycheck because their local zoning board is captured by existing property owners who vote for whoever will block development, and because every fruitful career path is fully credentialzed by the government to the point that in some places you can't even cut hair without a license (that was a big part of feudalism, it was just the Monarchy creating laws that restricted the practice of various trades to whoever had political connections, otherwise known as a guild system). But of course nobody pays attention to their local government, everyone worships Washington D.C. like it was the headquarters of the Avengers who were going to come and solve all their problems. Maybe that's why Marvel movies are so popular, they appeal to the childish conception that the only way to change the world is to have some sort of unnatural power that most humans don't have. Washington D.C. has that kind of power, but it turns out its not really much of a force for good. Whether you think the problem is that "your" job has been shipped to to China, or that the problem is we don't tax the rich enough, you're wrong.

My brother had a 1996 Land Cruiser in a beautiful metallic red with a tan leather interior. It was a $52k vehicle then and so it’s always been ridiculously expensive. He leased it and despite my suggestion did not buy out the lease. Everyone loved this vehicle in our family, especially his small children that would comfortably hang out in the 3rd row. In my opinion this version was better looking than this last edition and had the better inline 6 engine. I will always remember this vehicle fondly. For those of us that appreciate an old school solidly built vehicle this is a big loss. Rest In Peace Toyota Land Cruiser, you were always the best in your class!

And lastly one for sale is over 500k miles (807 000 kilometers). Not long ago Toyota Australia said the V8 diesel was being axed so all the remaining V8 diesels sold out in no time at basically full price. The upcoming 300 series Landcruiser is still coming to markets such as Australia and I look forward to it as I trust Toyota and believe the future non-V8's will still be ultra capable and ultra reliable. Fingers crossed the interiors retain as many physical buttons.

Hopefully, Toyota decides to make a simple turbo engine. Low pressure turbo engines are reliable, they just cost more to maintain. All depends on the details of course.

Great review. I bought a 2021 well before Toyota announced they were killing it off. I got a great deal. Now everyone is paying over sticker and they are crazy expensive. I will say it again. This will be the most sought after iconic Land Cruiser ever made. Prices will stay sky high. How can somebody buy a Tahoe or a Yukon or a navigator instead of this monster? I just don’t get it but I understand our American large SUVs do better on comfort and space. Last parting thought. if you are in the market for an SUV and you have the means I would dive right in and get one. There is an X factor that the Land Cruiser has when you look at it in your driveway or your garage it’s a very special car. These are more rare than Ferraris and if you need to drive from the US to Argentina there is only one car that will get you there. And there you have it

Great video! I truly miss the days of a bare-bones, all mechanical, body on frame, affordable SUV. I think if one of these manufactures like Toyota, Honda, GM etc. came out with a small, "old tech", all mechanical, off-road type, small 4x4, at an affordable price, they would go flying off the lot

It sounds like your are describing the FJ from the mid-2000s . With its current sky high resale value people forget FJs were priced as a very affordable alternative to the 4Runner at that time. Too bad the ergonomics were a disaster, the styling was juvenile and sales eventually fizzled out . Toyota has a capable and good looking 2 door Prado in production that could fill the same market space today. If they could be bothered to ship them over with the 4Runner and Lexus GX which are built in the same factory, Toyota would surely have a hit on their hands.

I used to sell Toyota’s and I totally agree the land cruiser is not a lease vehicle all the customer I’ve encountered who purchase land cruiser are ones who previous have owned them. And these customers typically don’t cross shop. They tell stories of their vehicle and they do purchase them to keep them. Soo true

My biggest gripe with this rig is that it only has a 25 gallon tank. The Tundra gets a 38 gallon tank with the same drivetrain which is more adequate. For an “overland” vehicle you’d think they would prioritize range more than they do, if you’re off-road with bigger tires, bumpers, and gear, you’re probably only gonna get 250-300 miles in a tank which is pretty sub-par at this point.

Comparing a LC to a Volvo XC90 is like comparing the Statue of Liberty in a casino in Las Vegas to the real one in New York. The two are not even in the same ballpark. The LC is a vehicle that, with addition of some better tires, can literally take you anywhere in the world. Your Volvo has trouble getting to the shops and back. Who cares about the driving dynamics and interior comfort if you can't count on the vehicle in any situation? These are large SUVs not weekend sports cars. LC aren't made for driving dynamics; they're made for driving through a war zone, around the globe, to the arctic or antarctic poles. You might never use it, but isn't it reassuring to know it can if you need it to?

I’ve owned five Land Cruisers, and my current one is a 2012 - I love that they never seem to break. Literally I’ve not had a single problem with any of them. And as for the price, they are a steal when you calculate sales price you pay vs sales price you get when you sell it. I don’t need another one, my currently one has several hundred thousand miles left before I need to switch it, but this video has me considering buying a second one while I still can.

Mark was talking about his XC90 being in the shop 4 times in the last 8 months. My 98 4Runner still hasn't ever been in the shop 4 times. It makes me wonder if he has ever owned a good Toyota. You know that rig isn't going to break down on your next trip, maintenance costs year in and year out will be negligible and if you want to sell it it will have great resale. I think old-school Toyota products are for people who don't like to throw their money down the drain when making a big purchase.
