Almost forgot to say that to those in the comment section talking about the great car but hefty price tag.....just check out the crash test videos from Volvo themselves.....they literally drop the XC40 from a crane at great height on its nose several times in a row.....so if you look at the first drop it smashes everything from the front back to the bottom of the A pillar....basically nothing in the passenger cabin is moved....there are may car brand that are very safe these days but Volvo always has the safety in mind first and foremost....it's a Volvo...you're paying for the safety. I don't mind paying that hefty price tag when I know that when it counts this car is going to protect me and my loved ones above and beyond......great, now I sound like a Volvo fan boy....😂

Honestly, the unintended NVH testing with the landscaping when you closed the door was so solid! You guys should try to replicate that in the future, whether another happy accident or another car playing music loudly. I love the XC40, my heart still belongs to the C30 but this is such a great package.

gotta say -- love my 2020 xc40 r-design. it came before minor cost cutting. so it has the R-design insignia on the steering wheel, paddle shifters, and the exhaust tips... and i strongly recommend the Polestar tuning for 1300 bucks. and you'll be complimented every day. people love the quirky design. it's quite fast, too. no issues getting to 70 instantly onto the freeway. no other brand comes close. not even BMW. the x-1 is boring and slow.

Dashboard and interior is very impressive

I have this same model but a 2021 in Bursting Blue ( sadly this color is discontinued for 2022) I took delivery of it in middle of May and so far LOVE it! The Polestar mode is a blast, as it really "wakes up" this engine and I can even tell a difference in the exhaust/engine note in this mode. My only complaint is the double tap for the gear selection. I got used to it rather quickly but its still an unnecessary extra step...Great review guys!

Don't forget the Polestar software upgrade also gets you a couple of extra horsepower but more importantly 37 lb-ft of torque.

I actually really like this. I was surprised, never even thought twice about a Volvo. The only thing that I dont like is the layout of the touchscreen. It honestly looks like the person who designed it was very old. The rest of the car looks modern, but that definitely doesn't. What I do love is the seats. That dual material looks great and look to be very comfortable. I just bought a 2023 Chevy Blazer and love it, but didn't even think to look into a Volvo before pulling the trigger. I probably wouldn't have gone with one anyway though because living in a small town in Georgia I have no Volvo dealerships anywhere nearby. I will definitely keep my eye on Volvo now, I never would have thought I would actually like them.

One of the better informed reviews. 👍👍 I’ve had Inscription Pro for a few months now and it was one of the first to be delivered under the spec cull. I was not happy. Fully agree to the tail lights. Why would a marque who prides themselves on safety still use old bulbs for brake lights? 🤷🏻‍♂️

Can I upgrade to projector lights to increase the brightness on this car?

Got my '22 R Design with Polestar tuning. Great car but I feel Polestar drops the gear and keeps it there, even if you hit 65mph. Causing revs to stay high and unnecessary engine noise.

This is a wonderful car! I test drove it when looking at new cars 18 months ago. My only issue was the price being several thousand above my price point as I wanted the Inscription model loaded (my retirement car). I went with a VW Arteon SEL Premium R-Line for $10K less and more creature features. Great review!

Guys, can you start to comment on EVERY review..... what does the vehicle run on..... Regular or Premium... you give MPG but it would be nice to know what gas it runs on...... that would keep me from getting a vehicle if it ran on premium and I wasn't aware of that at time of purchase. Overall love your reviews just add this one thing and it will be even better!

Great review! I just put the first 2000 miles on my new pebble grey XC40 R-design, and LOVE IT!!! it’s a little rocket with the polestar tuning…..and overall feels so solid and stable and Volvo-like. for a small ute, it has great storage capacity, and so nice that the cargo cover stores under the floor (smart!). and I LOVE the cool 20” wheels, and the super supportive and comfortable seats. The touch screen is rather annoying, wish they’d go back to the hard knobs.(hello, volvo!!!). Awesome on a long road trip. Overall very happy with this XC40!

I cannot believe the only option for roof color is black, we live in a very hot area spring/summer/fall, black paint is a big no no here. Major heat sink.

I’ve had a 2021 R Design for around nine months on the subscription plan. Overall it’s been a great car. Fun to drive, especially in the mountains and plenty of space and utility for hauling stuff around.

Do you think XC40 or BMW x3 more comfortable?

I think Volvo cheaped out without LED taillights. Especially for a luxury brand.

You forgot to mention that the Lava color option has been killed for the 2022 XC40 R Design package, which is a big mistake on Volvo's part!

What is the final assembly location of the vehicle you tested?

I really like everything about this car except for that infotainment system. It looks way too complicated. Having to touch and swipe all those buttons while you're driving down the road is not a good thing.

When you have the doors open you won't be able to see the side view from the 360 camera.

Disappointing they did not put in the new infotainment system. I think other models get it for 2022 so I would buy used. This model looks like it will get phased out.

My vw Tiguan for far less money seems way nicer. The Volvo looks like they used cheap plastic and no leather stitching where there should be in some places. Actually I’m pretty disappointed by the looks of it.

Nice car but I'd rather have the top of the line Tucson (much better value). If you can spend another $2,500 over a 4 year loan, Hyundai's Sante Fe Calligraphy trumps the Volvo in terms of value, tech and interior space (and warranty!).
