I think it’s ridiculous that all the manufactures are getting rid of a spare tire. I have a 2018 focus ST it has a full-size spare still has plenty of room in the hatch. Especially with the number of people that hit a pothole blow a tire and you’re stuck somewhere no spare.

@@TheTopher They do it for the Corolla Hatchback I think. You can optoin to get more space in the trunk if you opt for no spare tire. Not exactly sure why you wouldn't want the spare tier

i think part of it is fuel economy. every 100 pounds cuts fuel economy by 1-2%, and a spare tire is about 50 pounds, so you're looking at 0.5% to 1% reduced fuel economy. that's not a lot, sure, but it adds up over an entire fleet for hitting cafe targets. cost savings are another advantage: that means a cheaper car for the buyer AND higher profit margins for the manufacturer.

I'm glad my 2020 Sonata can fit a stock 18" wheel perfectly in the spare tire well. I drive 100 miles per day, so a spare tire is definitely something I consider when purchasing a vehicle. I also carry a trolley jack, breaker bar, inflator, and an impact wrench. Maybe overkill, but I'd rather have better tools to get me back on the road quickly, or to potentially help a stranger in need. Somehow I still have room in my trunk with all those tools and a 12" sub haha.

In renault clio 2 we have the tire sitting directly on the floor and it was secured with a bungee cord, still works after 15 years so if you cut those mounts, fit a hook and secure it with a bungee no more raised floor

Here's what you need to do. Take that false floor out and add a sub and amp. Mount a single 12" sub to the tire with load straps from Harbor Freight.

just installed a kit in the FK8 and it fits great. I guess FK8 is the last type R to have a proper fitting spare kit.

I have a 2023 civic si and I had to order the spare tire and all that goes with needing to change a tire after getting a flat tire due to the sidewall having a big slice in it , and I had no idea that I only had a worthless pump in the spare tire place ! I was not happy !

Thanks man! I found what looks to be an unused rim and tire for $127 shipped. I can probably get a scissors jack and lug wrench at the pick a part that will work. Too bad the tire well wasn't a bit deeper but it is what it is. I really think Honda cheaped out on this car with things like a spare considering what it cost.

It might not be cheap or practical for cargo but I might just run with a wheel and tire combo just like the ones on the 4 corners just lying on top of the load floor if I had this dilemma.

One thing I'd do is buy a new donut tire from tirerack. They're miserable to try to mount / dismount, but I'm not sure I'd trust a 11+ year old tire to get me anywhere. They do have actual weight and speed rating and are stored in a trunk out of UV damage but it'd still worry me. The spare tire on one of my Focuses was rated for a higher weight than the actual tires oddly enough. But "only" 81mph.

The cheaper option is a you pull salvage yard. Spares/tool set should be $25-$50. Of course, it's a spare so it doesn't even require bringing any tools.

This is a different bolt pattern than the regular civic hatch. Type r is 5x120, civic is 5x114.3 I believe, so this setup won’t fit but another spare with the correct bolt pattern will

The only thing I am noticing is that your aftermarket lug and rims might be using a cone seat. The OEM lugs and wheels probably use a ball seat? Ignore if this isn't true. For me, I have to carry my oem set of lugs in the car specific for the spare.

I bet the australian market CTR will have a spare; I think its mandatory, but they may actually require a full-size spare. We've seen some interesting cut-outs in the 86/brz in certain markets to fit a full size spare from the factory.

Honda offered a spare accessory kit for the FK8. Hopefully they will do the same for the FL5. The FK8 kit cost me about $130 for the wheel and tool set, then another $100 for the 125r18 tire.

I'm sorry but this is a stupid idea? You loose cargo space. The chance of having a flat is so small, then if you get a bolt in your tire you can still drive with it to a shop. Then, there's many shops who got a service vehicle that can fix tires anywhere, you call them in your area and they come. If all those options fail and you are in the middle of nowhere, you can use that kit provided by the manufacturer. I think the trade-offs are not worth it.

Once you use that provided fix-a-flat, no self respecting tire shop will repair that tire. Additionally if you get a blow out or a large enough puncture, that liquid is not going to do anything. Not everyone uses all their cargo space at all times, so not everyone is going to have an issue with the floor being pushed up a couple inches if it means they won't have to get towed home.

I mean, you can just take the spare out if you need cargo space. If I was not road tripping the car, and I'm in an urban area where AAA can get to me within 15 minutes, then yeah, I don't think having the spare is worth it. But if you road trip this car, I think having the spare is worth it, so at least you can limp to the nearest tire shop, which could be 50+ miles away. This applies moreso to the previous generation FK8, where those 20" wheels can blow out from a pothole. I feel more better with this generation's 19" wheels.
