I finally got a chance to drive the all new 2023 Ford F350 w/ the 4.30 rear end. This is the worst fuel economy you can expect because of the colder weather. I also test the acceleration as well. || Like || Subscribe || Share || #fordf350 #rapidred

If you’re buying any full size truck and expect good fuel economy you need to rethink your expectations. It’s like buying a Prius and expecting to be able to tow with it.

@@khakiswag Diesel is the same price as regular gas in quite a few places now. My oil is an extra $20/ change, and the only extra maintenance is a fuel filter every 30000 you can change for $40. The small diesel doesn't have much in common with the big boys. For an extra $30/8000miles (edit: $60/8000 miles including DEF), you get 30%+ better mileage, (edit: And 75-100% better mileage while towing)

I appreciate the fact that you show the payload of all the different truck configurations you test. As a truck camper owner, it's the most important spec for me, and it's so hard to find good payload info. A 4,700lb payload on a single rear wheel truck, with crew cab, is pretty amazing.

I ordered my 2022 with the 3.55 gears instead of the 4.30's and I am very happy with the truck. So far fuel mileage with a trailer has been 9 to 10 mpg. Truck only at highway speed I have had as high as 16 mpg. The 7.3L and 10 speed trans has a lot of power.

It’s not my daily driver so I don’t care 🤷‍♂️ about MPG’s ! I plow snow with my truck & tow heavy trailers & it laughs 😂 at anything I’ve asked it to do! the 7.3 makes great torque at low rpm of around 1500 rpm.... when u look at a 6.7 powerstroke with 3.31 gears ur losing alot of power.... the bottom line EGR ... diesel particulate filters an the price of diesel and overall government continuation of disel hate....makes gas more and more of a much better option.....i love disel but i think the government has killed them....and their time is probably past for anyone not driving 300 plus miles per day for buisness

I'm a little confused on why you keep talking about the cold weather as a negative. As far as I know every internal combustion engine loves cold air. That's why cold air intakes are a thing and is also why drag cars put down better numbers in the cold, as long as they can hook up. Hot air is no good for performance.
@kericks1991
@kericks1991 9 месяцев назад
With cold air you can get more, denser, air into the cylinders and thus more fuel so potentially more power but NOT efficiency. It's a barn going through the air at 70 miles/hr and the colder it is, the more energy it takes to propel your truck through it. The cold air also takes more energy to get it to combustion temperature. More power? Yes, because you CAN put more fuel to it but only benefits you at WOT.

Interesting video. I’m not sure how much throttle you were giving there in one of those accelerations but I noticed the truck shifted to 6th gear and seemed to maybe lag just a bit like you were “caught” at an rpm range and it took a little time to build rpms. I think maybe the speed you were going (65ish) played a big part in that. And that’s one of my concerns with that 4.30 at speed, towing or not. When you went to 6th gear that gave you a 5.46:1 final drive. It wouldn’t give you 5th there due to the speed you were going which would have put you at a 6.49:1 final drive. I think a 3.73 truck would have gave you 5th which would have been 5.63:1 final drive and maybe got you moving a little quicker. We will see when you get yours but I’m confident in saying the 3.73 is going to perform better in most situations. The 4.30 would be better for slower speeds for pulling power and maybe better for towing even on flat roads where it would have a 4.30:1 final drive in 7th gear. That would be the best gear to be in on like an interstate. The 3.73 of course would be 3.73:1 final drive and wouldn’t give you as much rpm and “pulling power” in that instance.
@matthewanderson9912
@matthewanderson9912 Год назад
@HalfShell well I didn’t mean lag in actual shifting. I meant once it had went to 6th gear it seemed to take an extra second or so before it started building rpm. Lag probably wasn’t the best word to use there. I think what happened was the rpm it gave him in 6th was just a couple hundred off of being in the engines sweet spot and it took it that extra little bit of time to get there. That’s my concern with that 4.30 at highway speeds. After watching a lot of test with it I’m pretty confident that it’s real purpose is slow speeds, getting stuff moving and really steep off road type grades. At Highway speeds it is limited to how low a gear it can go to give you a shot of rpm. But unless you have steep grades to pull at highway speeds you would never know. The three OD gears confuse a lot of people I think and that’s why everyone instantly says the 10 speeds will get better fuel mileage. But in reality they only have 1 extra OD gear as compared to 6 and 8 speeds and it’s just slightly taller so it’s not going to be that much of a difference. In the GM transmissions it’s 0.63:1 compares to 0.67:1. And then 5th and 6th is the exact same ratios as 8th and 9th. The real reason for the 10 speeds is the closer ratio lower and middle gears to keep the engine closer to its power band. So drivability and towing up grades are what to expect to be better. Not so much fuel mileage. Even 0-60 won’t be much different because you will have at least one extra shift and shifting takes time. But 40-70 mph runs would be another story.
@matthewanderson9912
@matthewanderson9912 Год назад
@HalfShell you may be right. It will be interesting to see the 6.8 compared against the 7.3 since Ford is saying the 6.8s 10 speed is specifically matched to that engine. I think between that and the shorter stroke of the 6.8 is going to really be a good combination and if I were buying a Ford I’d just skip the 7.3 all together now. That’s funny for me to say because in 2020 I said I would definitely pay the extra money for the 7.3. Now I wouldn’t lol.
@matthewanderson9912
@matthewanderson9912 Год назад
@HalfShell well it will definitely do that but it will also rev a lot quicker and that will help mask any lag from transmission tuning. The stroke is 3.68” so it’s not necessarily short but definitely shorter than the 7.3s 3.98” stroke. For comparisons sake the 6.6 Chevy is 3.85” stroke and the 6.4 Hemi is 3.72”. I think it will be ok. It still is making a good amount of torque and pair that with quicker revs and a specific tuned transmission and it will be ok

I have a 2022 F350 Lariat 7.3L UP - BAP - Tremor with the 4.30 gears. I agree with HalfShell......the 4.30:1 gear ratio is better in most situations. 1. Better for passing at speed with or without a load on the Interstate and other 4 Lane Highways 2. Better for launching loads from a stop 3. Better for towing loads up hills and steep grades 4. Better if owner wants to install 35" tires on a Standard Non-Tremor XL or XLT Super Duty with OEM 275x65R-18 tires (Lariat, KR and Platinum come with 275x65R-20 tires)

@HalfShell All Ford Super Dutys...both the 6.7L diesel (has PCM and TCM) and 7.3L gas (only has PCM) have Acceleration Lag or Throttle Lag due to poor OEM shift strategy and programming. I am wondering if 5 Star tune; Banks Pedal Monster or Pedal Commander will eliminate or reduce the lag experienced from the acceleration from a stop???
