The 2023 Genesis GV60 Performance AWD ($79,000 as specced in Canada, $67,890 as specced in the US) is the first fully electric vehicle from the brand. Genesis aims to soon be fully electrified, and the GV60 marks their first foray into this realm. Since this is the Performance trim, Boost mode grants it access to up to 483 horsepower and 516 lb ft of torque. It has a claimed range of 378 km and Genesis says that it can charge from 10% to 80% in just 18 minutes with a 350 kW fast charger. To test and demonstrate how the GV60 fast charges in a real-world scenario, Thomas and James head out to the nearest 350 kW charger in their area. We hope you enjoy the episode. Thanks for watching! AMERICANS, the range in miles is 235. Sorry, we forgot to include that. Also, as some people have pointed out, the intended use of the "fake" speaker which we accused of being a place to hide contraband, can be used to hold a fragrance pod. And that's exactly what you can tell the cop that pulled you over when he asks you "what smells funny."

The “fake speaker”-esque thing on the passenger side is supposed to be a fragrance holder- when you buy the car (at least in Korea), Genesis ships a couple of their fragrance to fit in that specific position! I know it’s a gimmick but at least it has more function than just a fake speaker.
@jewknee7870

Also some information coming from a GV60 owner: If you have the all wheel drive version and you put the car in eco mode, the car will mostly only use the rear motor, and shut down the front motor for efficiency I drive the RWD model, and that gives me 500+km range (computer does say 600km but that’s probably unlikely). RWD model only does 0-100 in 7 ish seconds, but i found it plenty Base level GV60 in Korea is about $15k more than Ioniq 5 & EV6. I think at that price range it’s worth it for the extended Genesis warranty (not sure how it works elsewhere, but it’s longer than hyundai in korea), and the premium feel you get. Also in Korea, when you buy a Genesis, they will offer you either a charging card with $500 topped up, or a Genesis branded home charger - we chose the former since we live in apartments, but it’s a nice option to have!

Its great haha! Super smart addition to an electric car in my opinion. Similar to the boost clock speed in a computer, electric cars have a certain thermal overhead in the wires where they can safely exceed their rated continuous power draw for a short time. Do it for too long and the wires in the motor windings will melt and the mosfets in the MSC will explode, but for 10 seconds its totally fine! So not only is it a clever and simple way to take advantage of that thermal overhead, but you get a feckin boost button! love it.

I got it and I love it. Range isn’t an issue because it’s a commuter and weekend long hauls as long as I charge it before hand will get me home with plenty to spare. It’s comfy and a hoot to boost. Plenty of safety features make me extra aware of my surroundings and the price which doesn’t break the bank sold me on the test drive. I test drove everything from an ix, i4, tesla, even had a reservation for a lucid touring (test drove it and it didn’t give me a special feeling where it counts), even its twins I tested and didn’t like. This on the other did it for me and my wife. I had my sites set on the ix after cancelling the lucid but the price difference didn’t justify a commuter (38 mi round trip x4 a week). To each their own, but if you have an opportunity to test drive and looking to dab into EVs and don’t want a Tesla and want something upscale, this is a good way to start.

My house (also in the US) was probably a more complicated case, with a detached garage and the panel in the basement. I paid $1350 to get wiring run to the garage (about 20' away from the house) + the 14-50 outlet, but a "normal" house with an attached garage I'd expect to be much cheaper.

Genesis did this car right, they didn't ruin the interior/exterior design by making it try to stand out from a gas car, and the interior doesn't scream cost cutting like the Ikea desk interior of a Tesla. It has more than enough speed for most people, and it has buttons for climate control, mirrors, heated/cooled seats, gear selection, vents you can aim without a screen, and can't forget about a glovebox handle. Desperately need more EVs to follow this trend

Correct. I refuse to buy a car that won't even let you adjust anything manually. I hope that the digital era is over soon and analog switches and levers come back into style. There was a time in the 1950's when every car started using push buttons for everything. Then they stopped doing that in the 1960's. And then again in the 1980's every single far started having digital things and no more analog parts, but then in the 1990's they stopped using digital screens and went back to analog. There isn't a valid reason that Tesla doesn't use a steering wheel or adjustable vents or a gauge cluster with a dedicated speedometer. The overly synthetic computerized experience isn't what people need.

I simply don't get it...why does it seem like almost everyone loves kia/hyundai design? I personally don't care for their looks, they are childishly overstyled imo (not in a good way like a supercar, but it a bad way like a fwd crossover) and aren't cars that anyone will care for 20 years later....they're just transportation, overpriced at this point too. That kia pinch grill thing looks terrible imo, but I think most people are impressed by kia and hyundai looks because they aren't car people...so that's what looks good to them. As an enthusiast who does everything themselves, I'm not gonna be owning a korean car anytime soon...they gotta come up with something really good and undercut the competitor price by a large margin for me to consider one...but they're just as expensive as anything else...yuck! Ultimately they're not built with Japanese quality or with Tesla technology/engineering.

It was, in fact, acting. First, anyone charging at an Electrify America (or Electrify Canada) station WILL have created an account in the app (create it once and make your life easy for all time). With that account, no interaction with the terminal is required AT ALL. Initiate charge in the app, plug the handle into your car, and you’re charging. Don’t understand all the “see how easy it is” enthusiasm. I live in rural western Canada. You pull up to the gas station, tap your card, select type of fuel and pump your gas. Been that way for years. I’d expect nothing less from an EV refuelling station. I don’t even opt for the paper receipt anymore because every time I use the card I get a push notification and an emailed receipt. Honestly, as new tech I thought the car would act as it’s own debit/credit card and exchange the info with the charging station when the plug was connected. You’d get a monthly bill from (insert credit card company and/or major auto manufacturer here) for your energy purchases. Sounds like a better revenue stream than BMW’s monthly option rental scheme which has completely turned me off of the brand.

@@stephenclarke5739 Unfortunately it very much depends on where you live. The early chargers rolled out by EA were made by ABB from industrial power supplies designed to power massive robots in factories. They were not designed to sit in Texas parking lots in the summer heat and be operated by consumers. EA and ABB can be forgiven for this. EA was under court order to build out a charging network as part of the dieselgate scandal, but there was no supplier at the time able to produce large numbers of purpose-built EV chargers and ABB had the ability to cobble something together for them when nobody else could. EA made the EV revolution possible for cars other than Tesla in the US. Today we are stuck with these older systems in many cities while more recently installed systems are more reliable. EA recently raised half a billion dollars (not from the government) to expand its network and replace older systems. This process is ongoing today. I travel by EV regularly and have never been stranded. Planning my trips and looking ahead on the EA app to ensure chargers are working helps, but even when at a charger that is giving me trouble I have never not been able to charge. Calling the EA help line and being polite has always gotten me on my way. Often just having a charger rebooted solves the problem. The older chargers suffer from the heat in hot climates and may be slower than advertised. Older interface units, the thing you plug in to, sometimes have difficulty communicating to the vehicle, especially if you have a prepaid plan from your OEM. Your OEM may have a work-around. Mine does. Worth checking. This is all new. It will take time to work itself out. Planning and constructive communication is more helpful than demanding that the government "Do Something!"

Installation for my level 2 EVSE was ~$700. I did not need any panel upgrades. It could have been a little cheaper if I put it on the side of my garage closer to the panel. A decent EVSE is $600-1000. So all in, about $1,300 to $1,700 all in. At $2/L gas, it seems to pay for itself pretty quickly compared to driving an ICE car.

Talking USD here, but you can get a great EVSE (Emporia) for under $500. I had 50 ft of conduit from a 50a breaker installed to an external NEMA 14-50 for about $1000. installation at $3-$6k CAD is an insane number that doesn’t seem right.

Model 3 owner in the USA here. My install had to dig 16 feet of conduit to my detached garage, plus I got the Tesla charger. I spent $1000. But then got a tax rebate for $350 back. So pretty affordable in my book. 3-6k seems insanely high.

Concerning the weight: I just saw a C&D article testing the 22 GV60 3.5T AWD, fully kitted, weighs 4584lbs, 60mph in 4.9s. I can't find specifics, but most estimated for the GV60 AWD max weight are just under 4900lbs. 60mph in less than 4s. The weight difference is closer to 300lbs, it seems, comparing like for like. Still heavy, but gas cars are also heavy.

If you have a decent car commute and don’t do a lot of road trips, I’d argue that EVs can appeal to more than just “enthusiasts”. Charging at home is very convenient, and there is a luxurious element to the low NVH of most EVs.

I'd love to have an EV for my daily commute, but until they come down in price to between 25-30k US they won't be for me. I also will need to refinance my house and pull a bit of extra money out to have a garage build so I have a place to charge the car as well.
@Gilamang
@Gilamang 2 года назад
Cost should come down soon, but right now definitely more in low level luxury price range. Lots of people put charger on outside of house or garage, and charge outside. That works great. No need to build a garage just to charge.

@@Gilamang Because EVs cost more than I want to pay for a car right now I haven't delved too deep into what it would take to have a charger installed, I assumed that it needed to be in a garage because that's where they are when I see pictures of them. TY for the info.

@@renegadezen7841 The truth is that for commuting a range of 100-150 miles is plenty. Right now, the longer-range EVs are kind of in no-man's land. They have more range than needed for commuting (thus costing more) but not quite enough to make long trips viable (especially in western North America where populations are sparse).

I think what everyone forgets is that there are so many features that are standard with Genesis vehicles and there are no packages that will hike the price up 20k more than what it is priced now. Plus Genesis only sales at MSRP and guarantees no price mark-ups unlike every other companies making EVs, so I think they have to price the vehicle as such. Also, someone has to realistically test this vehicle and see if the range is true because once Tesla is tested we all know the range is off significantly (at least 30 or more miles are over estimated by Tesla). Hyundai estimated less range on the Ioniq but when tested in real life it's was much more than predicted. And to note, unless your traveling, you won't need more than 200 Miles a day

Nice job detailing the charging station conundrum. I think reviewers should make a bigger deal about charging stations, speeds, and costs, plus reliability of the stations and connections. Your peers at The Straight Pipes do this frequently. Until the charging network is better both in terms of availability and 100% reliability there’s going to be hesitancy for the average driver to switch to an EV. It’s getting better all the time, but Thomas is right - the infrastructure just isn’t there yet, and it’s not keeping pace with the introduction of new EVs.

Not getting an electric any time soon. But you are really helping me narrow what I would get for when the time comes 😁 I am so glad you brought up the need for infrastructure to catch up to the demand for electric vehicles, which was highlighted by the number of stations you were able to find in the Toronto area that were NOT Tesla. Why? I live in a central location in British Columbia, which is the largest population center in the region (~85k) and about 6 hours and over 520km from the next major city. No matter what the suggested range shows, I wouldn't trust getting to where I am going, especially in the winter.

@@RogueBagel you're definitely right about that and I think you can't tell by looking at the interior. It definitely looks nice but it looks lower quality than the GV70 which in my opinion also looks better on the inside and out. Good day my northern brothers, but here in Georgia you have to be nearly crazy, stupid, desperate, and rich to afford the Hyundai and Kia ($58,00-$80,000 w/dealership fee’s) Some dealerships are adding a additional $20-$25,000. Premium to the $58,890 starting price of the GV60. Dealerships are still using Covid as a excuse to overcharge (no pun intended) the citizens of the Atlanta Metro area. In 20 years I’m almost sure that excuse will still be implemented. Nice car, but not worth the premium.
