I love those things. Wish I was there for the rally. Especially with new surfacing.

Yeah....the auto-mode is kind of egads-y and I do not know if Lexus will ever update the software for it. I have the same transmission in my IS500 and I only drive the car in Manual & Sport S+, so I can shift when I wanna! 😀 Thanks for posting!

You are right about that. Though, the software tuning is slightly different in the RCF than it is in IS500.

Auto mode is not meant for the race track even with SPORT+. SPORT+ with MANUAL mode and downshifting manually to the right gear is what the car was intended to do on the race track. It has maximum shift speed in manual mode. The understeer is easily explained in the RCF due to smaller contact patch on the front. Only 255 mm wide. The chassis can generate a lot more turning forces (product of speed x lateral G) than the mechanical grip allows. In simple words, car carries far more speed than the tires can handle in sustained turns. Just put wider, stickier tires/wheels and it can easily be mitigated.

Normally if we were driving on track to set lap times, we would most definitely switch the transmission to manual mode, however, we are trying to do comparisons with different cars on the same track in the same conditions and part of that means we want to see how the manufactures programed the shift logic of their automatic transmission under the most extreme conditions - on a racetrack. So, all things being equal, we let the car do the shifting. As you will soon see when we publish more videos, the new M2 in auto mode had absolutely no trouble with shifting gears as well as the C8 Corvette, Dodge Challenger Ghost and AMG 63S. For the understeer, yes wider front tires would definitely improve or even solve the issue - the point is however, Lexus is charging over $100K for this "Track Edition" version, we think it would be reasonable to assume it should have the correct size front tires on it from the factory, would you agree? Hey, overall we love the car; it's fast, it's fun and that V8 sound!!! It just has a couple issues that Lexus really needs to address and it shouldn't be that big of a deal... a software upgrade for the transmission and put some 275 size tires on the front - DONE!

@@WeAreMotorDriven Yeah, I understand that. You are right as the tires were a big weak point. I swapped out the OEM Michelin PSS tires (that had issue of sidewall collapsing under tight turns especially at slow speeds where the shoulder would just buckle) for much more aggressive shoulder profile tires to manage inertia of the weight under high G-load and it made a huge difference in tight turning situations. Regarding the transmission, I can tell you the delta between auto mode and manual even in SPORT+ is huge because only the manual mode was really designed for the track. The auto mode does not lock up the torque converter while the manual mode does, allow shifts in as little as 100 ms. Anyway, enjoyed the video and thanks for the response.

@@2ZZGE100 Great point about the torque converter lock up in manual mode. Thanks for watching and we hope you subscribed as we have more "The Lap" videos coming very soon!
