This is a Motormouth couple car review of the all-new 2024 Chevrolet Trax subcompact suv. With a starting price of $24,530 CAD/$20,400 USD, the Chevrolet Trax is an affordable option. It’s not a powerhouse but it sure is a great daily driver with a 1.2L turbocharged 3-cylinder matched to a 6-speed automatic transmission, 137 horsepower and 162 lb-ft of torque. This is a FWD model but with a good set of winter tires, you may be just fine without AWD.
The Chevrolet Trax has grown, it’s 11” longer and 2” wider than the previous model and has 7.3” of ground clearance. It comes standard with LED headlamps, body coloured door handles, hidden exhaust tips, 17” wheels, available 18” and 19” wheels and a compact spare tire.
Standard features on the new 2024 Chevrolet Trax include an 8” touchscreen, 3.5” driver display, wireless Apple Carplay and Android Auto, manual heated cloth front seats, a 4-speaker audio system, active noise cancellation, a manual liftgate and Chevrolet Safety Assist.
In the US, heated front seats are not standard, but are available in both the LS and LT packages.
The 1RS Chevrolet Trax adds the heated steering wheel, the LT has cloth and Evotex seats which is leatherette, a 6-speaker audio system, 11” touchscreen and 8” driver display. The Activ and 2RS models add a power driver’s seat and Evotex upholstery. Available features include, a sunroof and a wireless charger.
The 2024 Chevrolet Trax does not offer extra features like ventilated front seats, heated rear seats, a power passenger seat, driver seat memory or a power tailgate. However, the price reflects that and all of these features are not typical in the subcompact class. The Kia Seltos is the only model that offers all of these features.
Chevrolet Trax fuel economy is 8.3L/100 km, 28 MPG city and 7.4L/100 km, 32 MPG highway
Here’s the pricing for all the other trims available, Chevrolet Trax 1RS $26,030 CAD/$22,100 USD
Chevrolet Trax LT $28,930 CAD/$22,300 USD, Chevrolet Trax Activ $31,030 CAD/$23,900 USD and Chevrolet Trax 2RS $31,030 CAD/$23,900 USD.
The Chevrolet Trax Activ model has a more contemporary look with 18” black wheels, a black grille with chrome accents and Activ badging. The interior is comfortable, spacious and clean with black leatherette upholstery, yellow accents, a power driver’s seat, heated front seats a heated steering wheel, a 6-speaker audio system, the larger 11” touchscreen with wireless Apple Carplay and Android Auto and an 8” driver display.
The Chevrolet Trax is missing some features but the lower price point reflects that. It doesn’t offer a power tailgate, a power passenger seat, driver seat memory, ventilated front seats or heated rear seat. This is also a FWD model but with a good set of winter tires, you may find this is all you need.
This Chevrolet Trax is not a powerhouse but it’s a great city driver with a 1.2L turbocharged 3-cylinder matched to a 6-speed automatic transmission, 137 horsepower and 162 lb-ft of torque.

I'm a Canuck living in Changwon, Korea where these are made. There was a lot of rejoicing when we got the contract to build these here! The Trax saved a lot of jobs here! Now, they can hardly keep up with demand! Good for Chevy!

Unfortunately the Spark had to be sacrificed to make the Trax. Since Spark was a much cheaper vehicle, I still prefer the Spark.

I edited my comment. I meant to write that I prefer the Spark, not the Trax. You could buy a Spark for $10,000 USD cheaper than the Trax. Shame that new vehicles have become so expensive.

Exactly - how did we do it ? I remember my first car was a used ford fairmont and my wife spun out on the icy roads and the seat belt mechanism didn’t work and she got a black eye - and cheek and for weeks people were looking at me in a strange way - I am sure they thought I was beating my wife. I thought we were in heaven when we got out brand new 1988 Toyota Corolla with front wheel drive. Now all my cars are 4 wheel drive except my new Z 4 but that’s a summer car.

I also enjoyed your video/review for a different reason. It's rare to see a married couple who actually enjoys each other's company - well done. I love the way the base model looks but I would be willing to bet dollars to doughnuts that turbo charged 3 cylinder engine will not see 100k miles, maybe 150k. Honestly, they should have made a top end 6 cylinder and now you're talking. One of the greatest vehicles I ever owned was a '94 Dark Cherry Red S-10 manual transmission.
@bingboone9474

My 24-year-old daughter bought one in June. She has the base trim. I’ve driven it and am impressed with the 3 cylinder turbo, although I do worry about durability. I think it rides great, the back seat room is amazing, and it looks like a baby Blazer. Another concern I have is that twice it has failed to shift into drive and the dealer claims there’s nothing wrong with it. Obviously there is, but it’s an intermittent thing. She paid a smidge over 23000 for it (US dollars). As far as the lack of AWD, it’s not a priority. I’ve lived in heavy snow states all my life and never have had AWD. Never been stuck in 48 years of driving. Tires and intelligent driving matters. Great review as always.
@ghenry85
@ghenry85 9 месяцев назад
The 1.4 litre turbo 4 cylinder engine the old Trax had, wasn't a great engine. I had one in a Cruze and I'll say it like this: the long block was actually decent, but it had some really bad parts bolted to it that could distroy the long block. It took a lot of maintenance to keep that car healthy(mostly chasing leaks fortunately for me). But I sold the car with 320k kms to a coworker for his daughter. It still runs perfectly fine, doesn't burn any appreciable amount of oil, the valve lifters are noisy but that doesn't threaten the drivability. I've discovered that there are worse engines out there(ie Ford 1 litre ecoboost, why soak rubber belts in oil?) I don't think the fact it's a 3 cylinder is a durability concern, the turbo is my point of concern. It could be this new engine is good and will silence critics, I will watch this car with interest and hope your daughter has a good experience with hers. To my point about turbochargers, my current vehicle is a Toyota hybrid with an Atkinson cycle engine(which is almost the inverse of turbocharging).
@nodak81
@nodak81 9 месяцев назад
Biggest thing with any turbocharged engine is frequent oil changes. Normally I stick with every 5k miles or even 7.5k but with a turbo I would actually stick to the 3k interval. I would also have the coolant changed every 30k. Those engines are tiny and have to work hard, they need TLC if you want it to last.

when i went to test drive this car, there were more used cars than new. So i asked why i was being shown only used cars to test drive and the reply was "The car is in huge demand". So immediately my next question was "then why you have so many used?", So the salesman replied "People wanted bigger car". So that made me think for a moment and i asked for a test drive on freeway or a bigger road, and trust me when i say this...at 60 MPH this car screams for help.

Andrea and Zach, I love you guys! Your reviews are so wonderful. You’re always so objective in your reviews; you always focus on the positive of every car you test. I think that is great. Too many pseudo-novice reviewers focus on all the negative because they think it makes them sound profound and it actually just makes them sound stupid and inexperienced. I love the looks of this new Trax, it’s all grown up, sporty as ever; I love it. The value per dollar is UNBELIEVABLE, EVERYTHING YOU GET FOR $24,0000., especially in this day and age where auto manufacturers are practically raping customers with sticker prices so inflated on EVERYTHING, it’s a wonder anyone can afford to a buy any new car at all! I actually love the looks of this Trax so much, I went to test drive one yesterday. I was shocked when I stepped on the accelerator pedal of this tiny 1.2 liter turbo 3 cylinder; WOWWW! It was quick; so torquey and punchy. This little 1.2 liter 3 cylinder turbo engine packs a punch. I had a blast driving it. I was also impressed with how roomy it was, 38.9 inches of rear leg room; great cargo capacity. This new Trax has grown so much larger opposed to the last generation, this new Trax looks like a midsize SUV, in comparison. Chevrolet really knocked this one right out of the park ! Great review , Andrea and Zach. I always look forward to your great reviews; excellent job, as always ! Best-Tim

try HRV base model for the same price, more HP, more space, more security features and better reliability. Every touch feels premium on a base mode. All u got to do is find a honest dealership who wouldnt force B.S fees on you. And if they do force it then politely explain to them that "tied selling" is illegal in the country and you want to buy without any stupid add-on. Worked for me.

@Carfan678 Trax obviously looks more stylish and good, but it feels cheap and sluggish when you compare with the HRV. I was not particularly fond of how HRV looks. Compared to a Corolla Cross, this is the vehicle to get. Toyota dealers will charge you way above MSRP if you can even find one. While the Toyota may be better, the back seat room is a joke and you'll be dealing with markups. Toyota dealerships have become the scum of the earth. I tried to buy a Sienna and couldn't believe what these dealers are doing. I don't care how "good" their vehicles are, I won't do business with criminals. What a crappy time we're living in that you feel like you got a good deal paying MSRP. This whole dealership model needs to die.

In regards to FWD versus AWD if you live in deep snow stick with AWD. I live in Alberta and for 5 years i drove a FWD Mini Cooper S. It is a chore some days to get from A to B with a FWD Car in winter even with good winter tires. I have driven Big Semis/motorcycles/SUV's and Pickup trucks and finally just went back to a F150 pick up truck this last week, 2016 sport model with the 2.7 V6 ecoboost with a 100K on it for the same price as this car is brand new. These little cars are great if you live in the right place like vancouver or the Island. But speaking from living in Alberta Canada for 28 years you should really have something with AWD/4WD and good winter tires. With the right combo you get thru winter with way less headaches.....

For anyone concerned about the 3 cylinder engine I’m here to tell you it’s better then you think. My wife’s 3 cylinder Buick Encore GX surprises me every time I drive it. Its perfectly adequate. It’s not fun or sporty or impressive in anyway, but it’s completely fine. Its got plenty of torque to get you up to highway speeds in a hurry and for passing. They should offer a hybrid version. Modify the Volt transmission amd battery pack, detune the engine somewhat, it will be a Toyota competitor. Hopefully this 3 cylinder engine has lessons learned from the troubled 1.4 litre 4 cylinder. 3 cylinders can be reliable, small tractors have seen successful 3 cylinder engines for decades.

oooohhhh - gosh something like this might get me out of a sedan as it has the budget factor working for it. I agree FWD - height is more important than AWD - snow it is all about not being lifted up off the pavement - it should be just fine in my case - sedan in deep snow I get very worried AND when it gets to like -35 that darn snow turns into like a rock so you can easily have it dent the side running boards and fenders if you get out of the ruts (coming out of a lane, I could not figure out how to do the turn as the side cuts in - it was like rock sounds - off the ground makes all the difference in not being "concerned" and it still gets good mpg (height often works against that).

I am a huge fan of the car. I’m not sure that I would buy one, it’s a little smaller than the 2018 CR-V that I am currently driving. I live in Wisconsin where AWD is desirable but heck, I drove rear wheel drive for 25 years and survived. I find that suitable tires are more important than AWD.

Great video...Getting a car for my teenage son, this one seems appealing, but aside from the AWD, how does it compare to the Subaru Crosstrek, I know you like that car, still the better choice? and does the Chevy have the adaptive cruise on the lower levels like the Subi?
@Ruddline
@Ruddline 9 месяцев назад
My opinion not Motormouth: Crosstrek is a lot better off roading, you get AWD and 1 inch better ground clearance and I think the infotainment is bigger. I have heard its really stupid and hard to use though. Cheapest CT is 25.5k USD and cheapest Trax like 20.5K USD. Also I would go with used Crosstrek if you want to go that way and used Trax is a terrible idea, they updated it 2024 for a reason. If someone would give you a 2022 Crosstrek Crosstrek for saving money and potentially looks, a lot of people think Ctrek is girly or too angular. If money is no object 24 Crosstrek Wilderness looks dope af
