The trax styling is way better than the last generation. But it’s made in Korea and has a turbo 3 cylinder engine. But as a lease option not bad for 3 years/ 36

The mistake many AWD drivers make in slippery conditions is driving more aggressively than their brakes can stop them. I've been passed by some such drivers who were going too fast for conditions in winter, and saw them in the ditch a mile or two later, while I was safely still traveling in my front wheel or rear wheel vehicles.

Very true. I need AWD as I live on a mountain in CT. Too many times I have been stranded at the bottom of the mountain with my FWD Honda and Saab with snow tires (the Saab was markedly better than the Honda, but still could not always get me home). When those cars wore out in 2013 and 2018, I bought an AWD Subaru and an AWD Buick Envision. Now with snow tires I can get home no matter how much snow is on the ground (less than 7 inches of course). The FWD cars struggled with more than 2 inches. The cars were great with FWD in northern NJ but it was a different world in CT in the mountains.

Hey Dave. This is Nick. I work for GM Arlington Tx. Just to thank you. Watching your videos made my decision easy 3 years ago to buy the Silverado 1500 4 cylinders. And last week, I just bought the new 2024 1RS Chevy Trax for my wife. It is an amazing vehicle. Not fairr cause basically you sold me those cars, and they aren't going to count for your monthly numbers. Thanks again.

Dave. I just wanted to give you a shout out at what a great job I’ve seen you doing in your videos. I discovered you via the algorithm for the BOLT EUV road trip to Ohio. I am a GM retiree and interestingly, I was the District Sales Manager for Widger Chevrolet in Livingston NJ in the early ‘90s (now Schumacher 👍). What you presented in this Trax vs Trailblazer video is reminiscent of the walk around contests I used for new model year training. Keep doing what you’re doing. Excellent video. Great comparison. The MUCH needed makeover of the Trax by Chevy is amazing. For me personally I'd go with (and just did a deal) on the Trailblazer. This is my FIRST ever Chevrolet and I'm 57. I went with the LT AWD with a couple different pkg options. We get plenty of lake effect storms courtesy of Lake Ontario so AWD is a no brainer for me. Seen enough people stuck on the highway itself on my ride to work in some of the bigger storms that the plows hadn't hit in a while.

Great review. I'd also get the Trax, but with 1RS trim. Not a fan of the cyclops gauge cluster on the higher trims and no need for a bigger infotainment screen as I use Apple Car Plays apps exclusively. And the keyed ignition is a great anti-theft feature...no chance of relay theft or key fob cloning.

I compared both 2024 trax and trailblazer, I chose the trailblazer, and think you missed a few things here, the engine upgrade is not just about hp and displacement, the 1.3 has a timing chain, VRs the 1.2 having a timing belt, ever see how a belt can degrade, clog the oil pickup and burn up a motor? I have, a few times. This matters 6 plus years down the line. The other issue not talked about here, is insurance rates on trax vrs trailblazer, the trailblazer insurance rates are in the top 3 lowest that can be found, the trax insurance rates substantially more, and this matters for a monthly total for transportation costs. That is the main two reasons I chose the trailblazer. The third was 3k off msrp…that brand the trailblazer into trax cost. 4 thing is the local dealer had the exact color, and every option I was wanting. A Trailblazer LS, Larger motor, convenience and confidence packs, and the fountain blue color. At around 25k otd, at 5.9%, on 72 months. Well below msrp price, OTD! Try that with a trax…..both are good low cost transport, with good tech. A nabor has a trax she loves it.
@dazedexpression8039

Do you know why the insurance is more for the Trax? I have a 23 Trailblazer RS and I like it. But I need to buy a 2nd vehicle for my son to go to college in. I was looking at either the trax or one of a couple sedans from other companies. Just thinking basic, cheap but dependable and good safety features. But this is the first time I saw the difference in insurance mentioned.

For me it's comfort. I have a couple of physical issues. Getting in and out comfortably as well as seat and armrest comfortably are important. That's especially true for commutes. They both look good to me. Trailblazer is boxy and is like the distant cousin of Jeep (looks only) and the other is like baby brother to midsize styling SUV. I suspect they both perform roughly the same way. At the end of the day I think I'd just test drive both. I'm also considering the Envista. I like that coupe sedan look. Hard to call it an SUV. LOL

If I were to pick between these vehicles I'd pick the Bolt EUV. ;-) But really, of these two vehicles, I'd go for the Trax. I agree, AWD isn't really necessary even in the states with the heaviest snowfall. You're much better off with a good set of winter tires that you swap between seasons. Those help with braking and steering too, not just acceleration like AWD. Plus, you get better economy long-term.

Another thing to think about with all wheel drive is tire replacement. Say you have 25k miles and you get a nail in the sidewall. You are buying 4 new tires because the all wheel drive. The all wheel drive needs all of the tires to match or you will be having driveline issues.

I would choose the Trax you know heartbeat. But with a 1.3 GDI turbo, if I intended to keep it long term, I would be very loyal to old-fashioned oil changes of three to four thousand miles. Just my opinion. And if you live in the snowbelt, don't forget they still do sell winter tires which add a lot more traction. A front-wheel drive with winter tires will outperform an all-wheel-drive with Summer slicks any day in snow/ice. Standing by for all the hateful replies...

A little issue with how you describe AWD in snow off throttle: if AWD is engaged but you are off throttle there IS additional engine braking effect spread to grip on all FOUR wheels/tires, where in FWD that off throttle engine breaking only goes to the two front wheels. I agree that ACTIVE breaking in snow is the same regardless of AWD or FWD.

Price = Trax. These two are just too similar. Why pay more for the Trailblazer if you don't need AWD? If you do, different story. Also... As messed up as it is, if you ever need to live out of your vehicle, the fact that you can fold down the front passenger seat is going to be a huge factor for some in buying the Trailblazer over the Trax. Get yourself a somewhat thick, roll-up, foam mattress, along with a sleeping bag. Find a secluded spot to park. There you go. On a more pleasant note: Maybe you need to make a solo road trip. Money a bit tight. Lower that front passenger seat and sleep one night on the road. No need for a motel. AWD and that folding front passenger seat is going to persuade at least some folks to get a Trailblazer over a Trax. But seriously, why buy a FWD drive Trailblazer with the 1.2 liter engine when you can get a similar-looking Trax, also FWD with the same engine for over $1K less money. I'm sorry, just makes no sense to get a Base trim Trailblazer over a Base trim Trax. Save that over $1K for gas at the pump.

The Trax would be my choice as well. It’s one of the few vehicles that excites me. I am retired, living in Southeastern Wisconsin. We probably get a little more snow than you do but front wheel drive is fully adequate for me as well. The condition of your tires is more of a factor than how many wheels are driving you. The 2RS is my favorite looking model, but I really like the analog dash and manual climate control of the LS & 1RS. I prefer a regular key as well. I realize that it’s not 1978 anymore when I bought my first new vehicle. You could really custom order a vehicle to your exact specifications.

I like the Trax styling too, but I was disappointed to read the models shipped to the USA from Korea are 3 cylinders only. They have a 4 cylinder but it’s only available in china. The trailblazer is also a Korean made 3 cylinder so I’ll pass on both.

@@SunnynPhilly Well I haven’t exactly signed on the dotted line for a Trax. I too am concerned about the 3 cylinder engine. I’m currently not in the market for a new car so I have the luxury of “wait and see”. Hopefully the 3 cylinder holds up.

Dave: I’m a retiree too living in Michigan. We just got our wife an LT w/ convenience and comfort packages. As a senior, the heated seats, steering , and mirrors are a must. As well, the larger 8” & 11.2” screens are really handy with stiff hands. Losing all the RS badging makes the interior more refined/dignified.. the Trax ride and quietness are a real treat. I don’t exactly care for some of the available colors, but we got black. I think Trax is stunning in black. But they are going fast around here. I got ours when notified an incoming transport semiwas coming in with 1 car not tagged ($500 deposit). As I hurried to the dealer, the transport was just unloading and I purchased sight unseen. What a surprise seeing it in person. I highly recommend the Trax line.

I'm thinking I'd get the trailblazer. With my knees as they are, lower cars aren't as easy to get out of. I'm also thinking the A Pillar might be further away from the seat. I have problems getting my right foot out. So many cars like this.

Fwd with good winter tires does the job really really good, i got a Chevy Cobalt and i live in a hilly neighborhood in Quebec where we get alot of snow. I think that an awd isn't necessary plus i really don't like how the trailblazer looks so yea Trax definitely

I rented a Trailblazer when I visited Alaska via Turo. I was surprised how small the back storage was. I couldn't even fit my checked back in the back without putting the seats down. I must say the 4G built in wifi was amazing when I was in the middle of nowhere and able to listen to Sirius XM and use my GPS. I also like I could turn off the auto shut off at stops and lights, that was really, really annoying. Was comfortable had good pep and drove really nice overall.

The kicker for me was the front passenger seat in the Trailblazer folding down for additional length of cargo space. That's it. I agree about AWD, but I'll take that as an advantage for the Trailblazer, as well. I do like the styling of the Trax, too; I'm looking forward to the Trailblazer refresh and the new colors.

From one Dave B to another, I own a '24 Trax and love it! Good review and comparison. I traded in my 2016 Mazda CX 5 for this and there is a little adjustment, but with any new car you just have to learn where the new features are and forget about the ones your old car had. It's a wonderful vehicle and a great value!

Thanks for a very informative video. Looks like Chevrolet has got a couple of winners here. The Trailblazer is a little older and its sales numbers are going down. This means you might be able to find a good deal for it. The Trax is totally sexy looking. The only thing with it, apart from FWD only, are the tail lights. Why did they have to over style the taillights like that?

I have a 2016 trax and have had nothing but trouble with it since i leased it new in 2016, i then bought it out of the lease in 2019 and now in 2023 it has 81,000 miles, many new or fixed mechanical parts, drives horribly (with regular oil changes & maintenance) and violently shakes when idling. It drives even worse with heat or ac on plus an added smell from the vents. Hope the new one is made better

Probably the Trailblazer for me as having a slightly shorter car in the city is a good thing; having a front passenger seat that folds forward is incredibly useful; and I like the 1.3 liter engine and nine-speed transmission that come with the AWD option (though the AWD itself is something I'd probably not use much except on an unplowed road). The 6T40 transmission on the Trax though is not to be sniffed at -- it's really a very nice unit, based on my experience with the turbo Sonic. I'd have to look closely though at driving comfort as the Trax's less upright, more car-like driving seat position might appeal to me.

I test drove both, and l like them both. The main thing that kept me purchasing one or the other is the “additional dealer markup/market adjustment” above MSRP prices and other dealer markups like nitrogen in the tires, extended warranties, filing fees, and other mandatory add on junk forced on a buyer. All I want to pay is MSRP plus tax, title, license, and a negotiated downward document fee. Too bad dealer greed prevented me from buying.
