Glad to hear the 6.4 4.10 showed up well. I saw your 3.73 vs 4.10 video. I wonder if you could use this video to compare since the results seemed counterintuitive with the 3.73 faster...
@matthewanderson9912
@matthewanderson9912 Год назад
3.73 would be faster because it hits 60 mph in 3rd gear and based off its final drive ratio would still hit 68 mph before shifting to 4th. 4.10 is probably still in 3rd gear but it’s at the point where it has to shift to 4th because it’s max speed for 3rd gear is 62 mph. Shorter gearing does not always equal quicker acceleration.
@dcoderjr
@dcoderjr Год назад
@@matthewanderson9912 that was insightful! So it's not as simple as some make it seem. Now I have a new topic to research... This is getting addictive lol
@matthewanderson9912
@matthewanderson9912 Год назад
@@dcoderjr Definitely not as simple as some say. The 8 and 10 speed transmissions are making up any gearing advantage or disadvantage that a 4.10 or 4.30 rear gear would have gave in the past when all trucks had were 4 speed automatics. With a 4 speed, yes you need the 4.10 gear. With these 8 and 10 speeds the transmission can just drop one extra gear with a 3.73 rear gear and have a shorter final drive ratio as compared to the 4.10. So for example in 3rd gear the 3.73 will have a shorter final drive ratio as compared to the 4.10 in 4th gear. Now you might say why not shift down to 3rd in the 4.10 ratio and that’s valid and you would have a shorter final drive BUT at highway speeds there comes a point where you won’t have the rpm head space to shift down with the 4.10 where the 3.73 will allow the downshift. Ultimately you’re not hurting anything for most people by going with the taller rear gear when you have an 8 and 10 speed transmission (even a 6 speed to a point) because the transmission is making up the difference in final drive ratios by being able to downshift an extra gear as compared to the 4.10. Where the 4.10 would be a benefit even with the 8/10 speed is slow speed pulling power and/or very steep slow speed off road grades. At slow speeds you’re going to be in 1st gear anyway so yes, the 4.10 would have more pulling power. I’ve tried to explain this several times but just can’t get it through to JB lol. Highway speeds (60-70 mph) the 4.10 is no benefit whatsoever compared to the 3.73. It’s actually a detriment because you’ll be turning more rpm and even if the fuel economy difference is minimal an engine only has so many revolutions to make before it stops.
@dcoderjr
@dcoderjr Год назад
@matthewanderson9912 It would seem his previous video on this process your point. I was regretting the 4.10s reading your explanation but sounds like off the line there is still some towing benefit. You may have to make a video about it with some diagrams walking through that explanation because Ixd argue most people into trucks don't think that way.
@matthewanderson9912
@matthewanderson9912 Год назад
@@dcoderjr 4.10s have their place and if nothing else for a Ram you have to have them to get the max tow rating. And as far as empty acceleration goes you’re going to need a timer to tell the difference just like in his previous video comparing the 3.73 to the 4.10 in the Ram trucks. Seat of the pants I doubt you can tell a difference. As far as towing, again maybe the 4.10 would get you up to speed like merging onto an on ramp a little faster, but it’s not going to be drastic, if at all. And then at highway speeds, again the transmission can just drop a gear and give itself a gearing advantage over the 4.10, but even at that the 4.10 in the one gear higher is going to be a similar final drive ratio as the 3.73 is one gear lower. A little taller, so a little less rpm and less mph available, but similar. The reason I always say just go with the 3.73 and skip the 4.10 is because when you’re empty driving, you will get a little better fuel economy and not have to sacrifice performance, towing or otherwise. And the 8 and 10 speed transmissions make this possible. If trucks still just had 4 speeds then absolutely you need the 4.10 for towing performance.

I enjoy the subjects that you are doing. My interest in mpg is only when I am towing an RV and have a range of 300-350 miles. It seems like the 10 speed is not that much better than a six speed.
@slaytanic921
@slaytanic921 Год назад
From my understanding, the 10 speed will shine on grades. Besides that the 5 and 6 gear on a 6 speed is nearly identical to the 8 and 9 gear on a 10 speed, with the 10th gear being .63. So you won’t see huge gains in mpg unloaded.

The gearing is the biggest thing ! I had a 2010 Camaro SS LS3 (6 speed manual) and I did a gear change from 3.45 to 3.91, it felt like I gained 100hp !! I pretty much can guarantee if the Chevy had 4.10's like the Ram it would be very similar in 0-60. I don't get why GM doesn't offer it, especially with a 10 speed transmission, with that many gears you can "have your cake and eat it too" with the gear spacing and tall 9 and 10th gear. That 6.4 is no joke though :-)

with transmissions now days rear gearing isnt as important as they can gear the transmission to adapt around it. Back when you had 5 and 6 speeds they had far less gears to optimize performance and economy.

Not surprised by the performance results. But I was surprised to see a Mega Cab Ram with a lower GVWR have a higher payload than the Chevy. I think the Ford 7.3 is the better gasser overall, but I prefer the reliability of the 8HP trans in the Ram.

That 4:10 was likely the difference in performance, now the mpg, there is no explanation as to why the chevy would be worse. Gearing will easily get you that extra second. It’s all on your start, with a 4:10, it’ll get out of the gate faster, because you’re rpm’s come into the peak range quicker, as you could see in the 0-30 stats. After that, they were the same.

I’m beginning to think the 6.6 needs a driver mod 😂. You gained a second from your last 0-60 lol. So maybe next time you’ll get it figured out. And 10th gear is 0.63:1 and 6th is 0.67:1. So slightly taller for the 10 speed. 8th and 9th is the same as 5th and 6th though. You’re also wrong about the 4.10 but whatever lol.

With the branded 10 Speed Allison transmission that's in the Chevy; You hear the gear shifts from the engine (REVS) for me, I would also see on the TACH. Annoying. I love a machine that can pull the speed and have the torque to pull the 8th gear without shifting down. Better fuel economy. It is annoying watching the gears shift as soon as you start to go up a hill. Just looking at a slight incline. BOOM. Transmission shifts. Here the engine rev.... RAM pulled the 1800 to 1900 RPMs in 8th gear. Watch the video again with your Chevy; Shifting all around. Creating REVS. returning back to 10th gear just to go back to 8th gear as soon as you touched the gas or 1/2 percent grade on the road. Transmission has to work overtime and hunt around to find the torque band for the 3.73 rear end. RAM (Hemi engine) kicked your trucks ass. 4.10 gear ratio for the Chevy should definitely be an option. Would be a game changer and be more competition for the RAM. It is also hard to claim which one rides better when both machines are brand new. Well for sure the RAM. I know your Chevy suspension has been broken in with towing your trailers around. I have also had many machines (trucks) in my lifetime, and it literally takes 2500 miles plus utilizing the truck to break in the suspension. I guess you can speak about from an initial ride of only 30 miles on the truck. RAM for sure. 3500s suspension needs to work before this observation can be spoken of and who is a clear winner is in ride comfort. As far as the air bags on the RAM. Well worth the $1700. You would Spend much more than that with Ready LIFT air suspension set up. And if you plan on towing. I love the TURN-KEY OPERATION set up from RAM. GOOD JOB RAM for thinking about the person who utilizes their truck with the GEAR RATIO and air suspension from the factory. Hook both trucks up to your big ass trailer. You may disappoint even more with the CHEVY when you pull trailer right after each other.
