2024 KTM 790 Adventure On and Off Road Test Ride and First Impressions

I've been wanting to do a 2024 KTM 790 Adventure test ride since they announced they were bringing it back a few years ago. I have had so many questions about why KTM felt the need to bring back the 790 Adventure when they already replaced it with the 890 Adventure, arguably the best adventure motorcycle in the world.
Once the KTM 790 adventure MSRP was announced, it all started to make a lot more sense. Here was a very capable loaded adventure motorcycle for less than $11,000 US dollars. It's lighter and more technologically advanced than many of its peers and when comparing Honda Transalp 750 vs KTM 790 Adventure or Yamaha Tenere 700 vs KTM 790 Adventure the choice is clear, at least on paper.
HUGE thanks to Power Motorsports in Sublimity, Oregon for the opportunity to get on on this adventure bike test ride. Check out their website at www.powermotorsports.com or pop in and ask for Matt. Tell him Dork sent ya!
I had the opportunity to take the KTM 790 adventure off road as well as onto the highway and through some decent twisties and I came away incredibly impressed. Longtime viewers know that I am no fan of KTM in general and while I still think reliability is going to be a big issue with these, especially now that they're being manufactured in China, it's still hard to find any adventure bike with this many features for less than $14,000. This bike hits a real sweet spot between the KTM 390 Adventure and the KTM 890 Adventure and is a perfect stepping stone between the two.

I’ve got an original 2019 790 Austrian made adventure s and it has been perfectly reliable for 16k miles. I’ve changed tires and oil. No problems as a daily commuter. Not comfortable at highway speeds for long distances with the stock screen, but I love it and not looking to get rid of it. Fun bike. Yes! It’s been a workhorse and carves up the twisties and damn good off road.

The performance and features of that thing is amazing for the price. I doubt reliability will be any different than the KTM's that have been made in Austria recently. CFMOTO might even be an improvement. Also, I know you got the weight figure online (I saw the same figure), but it's a typo, the weight should be the same as the current 890 which is 470 lbs (213 kg) wet. There is no reason it would be any lighter. The 790 and 890 engines are the same weight.
@2wheels.are.better.than4
@2wheels.are.better.than4 4 месяца назад
You are correct about the weight. KTM’s own website says 438 lbs (199 kg) is the DRY weight. Also, I trust a CFMoto made KTM more than an Austrian made KTM.
@bigjoe4020
@bigjoe4020 4 месяца назад
213kg wet is still not bad especially if it has those low tanks on either side (don't know if this does). Should feel pretty light. Regarding price, compared to the Transalp's $1000 saving. The fact that this comes with CC is worth that grand to me already. If you can stomach that insect face ( I can't) then this should be on top of your list.

890-R owner here. At this point the probably the biggest worry about the older 790 and 890 ADVs is the cam issues. Too many reports of prematurely worn cams and followers. Which is a big deal. I'm about to pull the top off mine at ~8k miles as part of my spring prep to inspect and check cam wear, way, way before it is scheduled just because of the reports I've seen. Other than that mine has been pretty bulletproof. It is a full on giggle to romp on.

Hey Ben - always great to see you do bike reviews. It’s interesting to see how your view of brands change over time. I’d say some of the podcast style videos aren’t my favorite, and I miss some of the authenticity of older motocamping videos. I know things change as you become more familiar, a better rider, but I can’t help but feel different as of late with some videos. You’re becoming a better rider, but what caught me and a lot of others viewers is how approachable you are from new riders. As a longtime viewer, could you curb your approach to incorporate more day-in-the-life of a motocamping goofball for experienced riders appreciating a true internet riding buddy?

From my personal experience KTM is not worth the hassle. I loved my 790 Adventure R but it was so unreliable it defeated the purpose of an adventure bike. Months and months of troubleshooting the same handful of issues over and over from 4 different dealerships/repair shops. Direct contact with KTM. They can't even diagnose and fix their own bikes. The personality of the bike/engine and the features for the price are absolutely amazing. If you luck out and get a reliable one. Awesome! I hope everyone does but my experience with KTM has turned me off the brand forever.

2022 890 Adventure S, with about 6,000 miles, drove it from Oregon to Arizona and back. It was fantastic the entire way. It could use another gear when cruising on Hwy's with a 80mph speed limit. As for issues, I had a issue with the brake light sensor right away. The sensor is not a mechanical switch, but a pressure sensor within the brake fluid. It would get stuck and my brake light would remain on, and my cruise control would work. A couple of trips to the dealership and they swapped out the parts. No issues since. All in all very happy with the bike.

I veered from a Transalp in the last minute and got a 2023 new 790adv (black). And boy am I glad. Dunno if you mentioned it, but this bike also has tubless tires, and a steering dampener not to mention cruise control. I've ridden it 1000 miles, no issues. Service intervals are huge (15,000km's), and service price is absolutely normal. And the stock bash plate and hand guards are surprisingly sturdy enough that don't need replacing unless you're a serious off-roader. And the best part about reliability issues, I heard in more than 1 youtube video that even a pro rider cannot tell the difference between a Chinese built one and an Austrian built one. In fact, they have placed serious original Austrian KTM managers in the China factory to make sure everything is done as per KTM's guidelines. Anyone who's had issues has to be asked the question what model their bike is. Coz the 2023 is certainly better in my opinion than the older built ones. It's extremely fun, torky with enough power and wants to be ridden like you stole it! Just what the doctor ordered! It doesn't even require protection bars coz of the dual low tanks. The only thing I'd like to add to it are heated grips and a Remus exhaust since the original sound is a little whimpy.

Great video Ben and I think you should get one for a long term test. I have been considering a Transalp but everywhere around me is sold out of them and they don't know if they will be getting more from Honda. I've been seriously considering the 790 adventure instead of the Transalp. I haven't really been that much of a KTM fan due to their high price but with this one being set so affordable, I think it's definitely worth a look and possibly buy it.

I had the original 790. Was a good bike but did have issues. The upper rad hose leaked and almost toasted the motor second ride out. The Fuel gauge stopped working in the first 500 miles, the bike was crazy lean and you had to start it about 5 times when cold before it would idle. I did not have the rear shock breakage issues. The dash was to complicated and I hated resetting everything all the time. Overall it was a good bike. I moved on to a SWM Superdual (650 DS) because I wanted more off road ability and less of the electronics. This has ABS but I even pulled the fuse on that. I'm a very experienced rider with over 4 decades of continuous riding, I don't want ABS and it has almost killed me off road a few times. And as unicorn as that bike is I have had zero issues (well OK a loose ground wire the dealer missed when installing). Its based on the old Husky TE630 and has been a fantastic bike for my needs. The best 50/50 DS bike I could find and does exactly that. 85mph all day long on the tarmac or exploring single track, it does it all and had been a great partner. I'm recently retired (early) and have been logging miles all over western USA. rode so much of California this last 6 months and in Hollister / Morgan Hill area now. So fun.

Real fun to watch this video! I especially love your laughs - you've got caught by the bike at the very first minute, weren't you? 😉😁 Just allow me one lesser critique - the perspective from the X3 makes the bike look like a moped desperately trying to get rid of its rider 😉 When I bought my 690 in 22, I also eyed the twin as I planned a long trip off-tarmac (which I did with the 690). I opted for the thumper not only because of the price tag (at that time) but chiefly because of weight and the comparably limited exposure of plastics towards the ground to the occasional drop. At least the latter still applies, but were I in the same situation as I was in 21/22, I'd have a hard time deciding. Fun fact, I managed to dent the rear side panel by dropping the bike - didn't even know this was possible...

I have a 2021 890 r, I upgraded from the old 790 because I needed the ground clearance when I ride in deep ruts in sand. The 790 was a good bike till the clutch went out, I replaced the clutch and the new one from tusk was too big for the basket but I didn't find this out till after the bike sent brand new clutch pack material through the cylinder head. So the bike grenaded itself and I upgrade to a brand new 890r, why stay with KTM? It's worth the risk of maintenance issues because the bike is so friggin good. The oow center of gravity, the aftermarket, how easy it is to ride with my friends who gave true dual sports in the ohv park. The bike is so good I bought an 890 s for my friend as well! The old 790 had oil circulation issues but the 2021+ bikes are great. Just buy the 5 year warranty for the electronics and engine as a precaution. But I have 8,000 miles on my 890 r and it's been a dream, dropped it countless times, had the radiator clogged with grass clippings for a whole trip before I could clean them out, taken it on single track, jumps, deep sand, and hill climbs, just no rocks since I'm in Florida. Now if you have the ability to be close to the trails and adv bike isn't as good as a dual sport, but when you have to ride an hour to get off road, the KTM is a nice place to be the whole time

Question, if you haven’t had any personal long term experience with the Aprilia Tuareg how can you speak to reliability? The early models had oil leaks due to bad seals and a batch of fuel senders were bad, but for a brand new model that’s really minimal stuff that’s warrantied. I’ve got a 22’ Tuareg with 3000 miles and it’s going strong.

A lot of people in the US don't realise that the models Cfmoto brought out in 2016, which is now more than half a decade ago, were almost up to Japanese quality. Like, really close. They didn't get them but we did in Aus and it was almost a shock when I went to see the new models. Now they're hitting the US market I'd imagine the quality has to be really really good now

I had the original Africa Twin, hated it. Well OK, it was a good street bike. Then got the original KTM 790, was good, better than the AT. Then I sold it and got the SWM Superdual 650 single cylinder DS bike (updated older husky TE630) and never looked back. A single cylinder 650ish bike allows you to do so much more exploring. Most of these "ADV" bikes are glorified street bikes. It all depends on what you are looking to do. A decked out DRZ650 or XR650L is a great platform to do anything from.
@ckxtreme4338
@ckxtreme4338 4 месяца назад
@Motosportz for me the issue is balancing weight and seat height (I'm short) with on road performance. As much as I say I'm going to be carving trails the whole time, I'll be on a highway for a couple hours just to get to the trailhead. To me, this bike offers both. Whereas something like a DR650 will be great to toss around on a trail, and way easier to learn offroading on, it will be uncomfortable to deal with consistently on the commute to the trail.
@Motosportz

@@ckxtreme4338 I ride my SWM Superdual (650 single DS bike) hundreds of miles on pavement. Not an issue. will lope along at 85mph all day getting 55 mpg. Has a good stock windscreen and hand guards making it ever bit as comfy as my 790 was. It has a low seat height, smooth powerful motor and 230 plus range. For me, it checks off all the boxes. I wanted a modern DRZ/KLR/XR-L and that's what this is.

Thank you Ben for disclaiming the CF Moto lineage right out front. We sell CF Moto four wheel products at our dealership and have seen an incredible come up from the brand in terms of vehicles/accessories/innovation, but have yet to see the reliability follow that trend. I'm sure it will eventually get there, especially with the collaborations from the likes of KTM and Yamaha. I'm just not prepared to put my money down on any KTM that has a VIN starting with the letter "L". I also feel like I've talked to enough KTM owners through the years that wouldn't buy one solely because of the CF Moto manufacturing aspect, like it's the red headed step child of a KTM. I think they have an uphill battle with their typical customer base, but if they can get passed that, this bike will be a winner!

yeah it's kind of a weird segment for them to be targeting but I guess they started going for newer riders with the 390 so this is just continuing the trend by targeting the budget conscious average rider, as well.

9:50 R and "higher spec" versions in general is not to make them more capable or ride faster. Better suspension means mostly better comfort, less fatigue, better handling, better overall experience. Its common misconception about suspension i hear all the time. Id choose R even if i would ride like grandma to church and still would benefit from more suspension travel. Benefit of base version is lower bike therefore lower CoG Cheers

I'm also not excited to buy anything Chinese right now (or ever), I wish we could support a good American manufacturing. But man, this bike is going to break me. As someone familiar with Asian manufacturing, I want to share my experience with China. China’s problem is NOT its capability. China already has top-class manufacturing ability. DJI or Foxconn(Taiwan HQ, but most assets in Mainland China) are prime examples. China’s real struggle is its mentality that “Gotta make it cheaper, so let’s cut every corner whenever possible” - QC/Consistency issue. It’s very common for a Chinese company to show an excellent sample to get a deal and then degrade quickly. Modern Japanese companies’ strength is their conservative QC process. (Ironically, this has become its weakness, too; innovation is too slow, and the cost is not competitive) CF Moto has something to prove at this introductory stage and has the ambition. So, there is a higher chance that CF Moto actually delivers a really good one, even sacrificing its profit for this model. 790 has a chance to be a rare 😂 KTM example for good reliability. In fact, this model has been out there except in the US for more than a year without major complaints. Also in general, I don’t know why or how, but KTM’s reliability has become notably improved after the late 21-22. (this might be a coincidence, but it is still interesting) I think 790 is worth a shot. I wish Yamaha would improve T7 a lot to compete, especially its top-heavy weight and overall diet.
