Hey Jon, sorry I’m not making it there this morning. I’m watching a couple videos before going over to the grandson. That’s a wall of eyes, yes on acid! The Past is Still Alive, no on acid! Tiger’s Blood 🩸, yes on acid! I actually like lyrics with hidden meanings and not straight forward. Letter to Self, maybe no on acid, but yes on weed. Have a great day with great cats in the VC and enjoy the record show or conference. Dude your sarcasm is what draws me to your channel and the fact that it’s not straight forward is always better. Peace ☮️ Namaste 🙏 again I hate missing you guys today. The Zonkman

If you showed up today, I would have been disappointed. 🤣 Priorities! We will miss you, though. We’ll catch up soon. Looking forward to hanging with Eric and flipping through some bins. Cheers, Steve! ✌🏻

I totally share your dry sense of humor. What surprised me more was that I was already familiar with what is usually an esoteric clip to kick off your videos; I guess I consumed it as part of a RU-vid rabbit hole I went down while reading Michael Pollan's How To Change Your Mind back in 2018. I got really into Wall of Eyes as well. One caveat to others buying it: stay away from the blue variant! As much as I appreciate when they match the color variant to the cover art etc, this version was noisy and particularly bad on side 2 which had some of my favorite songs. I exchanged it (something I rarely do) for a standard black which was far superior. Just my experience. You definitely have me taking note of some of you're other featured artists. My recent most played new indie album is the new Mary Timony album Tame the Tiger (to go with your Tiger's Blood theme). My other recent favorite is that new RSD Wilco - The Whole Love Extended; an absolutely fantastically engineered, mixed and pressed new set...I dare say audiophile that rivals the two Rhino High Fidelity series records I've picked up this year; Television and Grateful Dead - American Beauty (what I've been referring to as "70s rock Tone Poets". What I'm trying to say is the Wilco RSD smokes...really fantastic pressing. Cheers!

Yeah, I think this clip is kind of well known. I feel like it’s been used in a movie or TV show. I still need to listen to the Mary Timony album. Glad to hear The Whole Love deluxe reissue sounds great. I didn’t feel the need to pick it up since I have an original, but I’ll stream the extras eventually. Always good to hear from you. Cheers! ✌🏻

Hey Jon, this video went right through me! I think I might need to try those middle two records you talked about. Alway interesting to see what you're listening to. Hope you and the family are doing well.

Definitely check those out, Elliott. Only listen to what the 🦋 are saying and don’t pay any attention to the 🐉. Especially the purple ones. 🍭 😵‍💫 Hope everything is going well on your front, too. ✌🏻

I loved this! Thanks for clarifying and I won't take the bait on being puritanical again. You are still the best. Love me some Waxahachie--very impressed by her music. Enjoyed that Smile record as well. Don't know the other two but happy to be exposed to more tunes.

The Waxahatchee discography is a mixed bag as a whole. I’ve really liked the last three albums - the last two being more Americana-infused. I think you’d really dig Hurray for the Riff Raff. Definitely check their albums out. Hope all is well out your way, Alexander. Cheers ✌🏻

Man, I haven’t even listened to the first Smile record yet. Gonna check out Hurrah For The Riff Raff and Sprints. I did listen to the new Waxahatchee Record. I dig it. Jon, If you would ever consider running for VC Leadership I’d vote for you. 🇺🇸

I think you’d dig Hurray for the Riff Raff. Waxahatchee’s sound sure has changed from record to record, but I like where’s she settling in on this rootsier sound. 🤣 I’ve never been a leader. Always considered myself more of a kingmaker. In five years time we will all be serving an A.I. version of Mazzy.

Hey Jon, great to see you show Hurray for the Riff Raff. I need to check out that new album in more depth but I’m with you that Small Town Heroes was the one that i really loved. They were the first band i saw after moving to Philly in late 2013, it must’ve been right before that record was released bc they were playing those new tunes in their set. It’s too bad the original guy who played drums (and also lead guitar at times) in that band has since left as he was a fantastic musician with really really great feel. They blew me away with her powerful voice and that great band with the fiddle. Great stuff. Thanks, Brian

Hey Brian. I saw Hurray for the Riff Raff open for Shovels and Rope on their Swimming Time tour. That was a hell of a night. I think the HftRR band has been through many evolutions. I’ve yet to see her on a headline tour. Couldn’t get out to see her when she came through North Carolina earlier this year. Hope all is well your way. Cheers ✌🏻

I like the Waxahatchee album as well. We'll see where it lands at the end of the year. I'll definitely check out Hurray for the riff raffs. Maybe you've given up on them, but I really enjoy the new Pearl Jam album too. Grtz!
@TheDigitalGramophone
@TheDigitalGramophone 3 месяца назад
Right now, I’d say the Waxahatchee might fall a bit. Hurray for the Riff Raff will likely remain a Top Fiver. I love it that much. So, I haven’t completely given up on Pearl Jam. I was talking with some friends recently and we were saying we’d still go see them live. I think there are some really great tracks on the new album, but I’m not a big fan of Andrew Watt’s production. Thanks for hanging, Nick. Good to hear from you. ✌🏻

I like artwork for all four of the album covers. Interesting to keep a running ranking of the new albums you're streaming. Will be neat to see your list at the end of the year. Will you revisit your rankings on subsequent listens?
@TheDigitalGramophone
@TheDigitalGramophone 3 месяца назад
Feelings always change about an album the more we listen to it. Not sure this is an accurate “ranking” exactly, but yes, at least grouped by the score. 8s and 9s will continue to get more listens as the year goes on. A couple of the albums on the list will be picked up on vinyl at some point, and I’ll talk about them in the next 2024 update.

I hear you mention Thom Yorke and I had to rant a little. To this day I have never listened to any Radiohead, solo or anything else that his name is on. I was visiting a friend of mine who was the afternoon jock on Boston's greatest FM station of the eighties and nineties WFNX. Radiohead members including Thom were being interviewed as they promoting their first record. He ended up abusing the record/CD girl the whole time they were there and he would not stop yelling of my buddy who was trying to promote them. He kept yelling "play the single" over and over again. I couldn't believe it. From that day on I could not listen to anything related to him after that day. But I have to admit. I do like the sound of The Smile. Each one of those sounds interesting Jon. I will start with Sprints. Is that the band name? Always good to see you. Hope you have great weekend~ Rob/Boston

Unfortunate story, Rob. I could definitely see how that would turn you off to them from the jump. Thing is, there’s a ton of bad stories about a lot of rock bands. Many that a lot of us revere - Led Zeppelin or The Stones come to mind. I think we do a lot of turning the other cheek when it comes to be music geeks. Yep, Sprints is the band name. Check them out for sure. Hope you find something you like. Always a pleasure hearing from you, and really enjoyed your recent video. Cheers ✌🏻

I can't see much topping The Smile this year. The new St.Vincent is a prime example of a perfect streaming album. It's a really solid affair but I don't think I would play it frequently to shell out the $40 standard sticker price these days. The first Bloc Party album is like the first Interpol album , phenomenal & like Interpol they never came close to equaling it much less surpassing it. Sprints definitely have that manic sound & the singer is a major talent. Seeing Slowdive next week & just saw Swans. Still waiting for the new Cure .. Been waiting a minute ⏰️

I really like the new St. Vincent. It reminds me more of her earlier work in a lot of places. I hope it’s not $40. 😬 I was gonna grab it this weekend. The Smile album is fantastic, though. Yeah, David, Bloc Party immediately sucked after their debut. I think they ran out of ideas, and also lost focus. Silent Alarm is still one of my favorites from the 2000s. Enjoy Slowdive! Bravos/Guardians series this weekend. Should be interesting.

I don't own any Hooray for the Riff Raff records but I do like her sound. Had the first Waxahatchee record way back when and quickly gave it the axe-a-hatchee. Sprints sound interesting; the clip you posted didn't sound post-punk (to me) but more like "pop punk". I'll try streaming it and see what they have to say. Thanks for showing, and don't let your kids do acid. ;-) Cheers! Tom

Hey Tom. Yeah, Sprints does not sound as post-punk, but they are lumped in with all these UK bands that sound like it. I had a couple of the earlier Waxahatchee records. Her overall sound is pretty different now. I think some folks just don’t like her voice. I can understand that. Thanks for hanging. My kids only do melatonin. Lol ✌🏻

I really like your approach sir, (and your intros). These days I'm trying to find a reason NOT to buy a record especially new releases. Try to rule out as much as I can and if it passes all that, then maybe I'll buy. But I'm much more biased with new records. The Smile didn't resonate much with me either record. But I like what they're trying to do. I'm a sucker for the UK post punk thing but it's harder and harder to find a unique take. Sprints felt a little more 90s alt rock to me which was surprising. Though I am hearing that sound turn up lately

I’ve just found that resisting the urge to buy on release date helps. None of the four here are in any danger of the quantity running out. So I could wait a minute and make sure… “Do I really want this on vinyl?” Have some used stuff to talk about, too. On my way out to meet up with Weinbender. Dave will be there but that goes without saying! 😎 Cheers ✌🏻
