They're still built to a price and will not be the same as their aftermarket counterparts. He is correct by saying it adds more adjustability. For an extra 1k do you really think you're going to get major upgrades ?
Most people focus on performance. But the SP suspension is significantly better at soaking up bumps too! And I have different settings for track and street and yes, they make a big difference at least for feedback and comfort, if maybe (don't know, did not test softer setting on track) not so much on lap times. The review is pretty light on info to be honest. I have the previous gen SP and was curious about the feel and performance of the new calipers. I found out they are shiny by watching this video.
If the keyless ignition on the MT09 is anything like on Yamaha's XMax range - it's gonna be shite. I lived with the ball-ache of a keyless XMAX300 and after selling it to go back to a "normal" key ignition, I'm never going keyless again. Finnicky, battery runs out, fiddly little turn dial that gets corrosion and doesn't respond eventually, another thing to go wrong, (which Yamaha's XMAX ones did, a lot - they had to do a number of re-designs, they were so regularly failing, Yamaha should have recalled them). In my limited experience, I'd say beware keyless ignition. It's trying to solve a problem no one but delivery riders have.
So much talent. You make any bike look good. Entertainment at its best. And my comment on the bike. It’s about time Yamaha why did you wait so long. It’s a shame the R1 missed out on Brembo brakes.
Great video as always. I'd love to see a comparison between the MT-09 SP and Street Triple 765 RS. I'm looking at both bikes and in my market the MT-09 SP is $3000 more than the MT-09 and $1950 more than a ST 765 RS with desired options (heated grips, cruise control, TPMS, protection accessories, etc). An educated, considered comparison would help put the value proposition of each bike into perspective since despite being somewhat different takes on the naked bike formula the MT-09 and ST 765 RS, in my opinion, are direct competitors. Plus, it would be a hoot to see Chris thrash both bikes in his wonderfully exuberant way.
kay, I’ve always scratched my head about the obsession around the kisluxbag book totes and their practicality, but this one is adorable!! Congratulations
At 4:00 you mention that you can diaable the rear ABS. Do you know if that feature is only available on the SP or does the base model allow it as well? Thanks.
I was looking at buying a new Triumph Street Triple 765 RS next year, which is obviously a fantastic bike, but when comparing it to the new Yamaha MT-09 SP, I think overall the SP comes out on top. The Street Triple might handle slightly better, but when you consider what you get for your hard-earned cash, such as Yamaha's full electronics suite of goodies, you can't ignore the MT-09. Considering the prices of bikes these days, it's an excellent bike for the price. You also get peace of mind from having Japanese build quality and reliability, and it has more than enough power for the road. Plus, I haven't seen a bad review yet for the MT-09, everyone is saying at the moment and for the money, it's probably the best street naked out there!
@@DaleMt09sp Yep, the CP3 is an excellent engine. I did manage to get a demo on a 2021 Yamaha Tracer 9 GT, but didn't really get on with the bike, and also I didn't really like the sound of the bike when riding around town. I had a Yamaha Ténéré 700 at the time, and that sounded much better. That CP2 engine was also a cracker. Saying that, the Tracer sounded really nice when I opened it up down a slip road onto the motorway. As far as I can tell, this version of MT-09 sounds much better in all situations, especially with the addition of the "grin-inducing" acoustic grilles. I've got a Suzuki SV650 at the moment with a slip-on fitted, and it sounds epic. I'm not in a hurry, so I'll wait until the deals start on the 2024 models. It looks like an excellent bike, and it's got every thing going for it, except for that exhaust!
@@DaleMt09sp I did manage to get a demo on a Yamaha Tracer 9 GT three years ago, but I didn't really get on with the bike, plus I didn't like the sound of it when riding around town at slow speeds. But, it sounded really nice when I opened it up down a slip road onto the motorway. As far as I can tell from online reviews, the 2024 MT-09 sounds much better.
@@soulrebelno1 it’s the same engine and exhaust pretty much bar a couple of tweaks for euro regs but you get the grills on the tank they sound epic with a exhaust on chucked a scorpion one on mine
If you’re only or mainly doing street riding the MT09 is probably more rewarding and exciting than the STRS. If you’re doing a lot of trackdays, the Triumph is probably the better choice. Personally I would choose the KTM890R over both of them, not for the looks but for the sheer performance and thrill. Saying that after owning three different generations of Street Triples. Not taking reliability into the equation, that KTM is a marvel to ride. If you like the engine configuration that is. For me it takes the best of both the MT and the STRS and fits it into a not so good looking, but very enjoyable package.
It's already been released in the USA, just in very limited supply to high volume dealers based on pre-orders. Seen around 5-10 people across Washington, Oregon, Utah, California, and all the way to Virginia get theirs. Some even got delivered a month ago. If you don't already have a pre-order at a dealer you likely won't be getting one of these any time soon
From what it seems the 765RS handles better and is better for track days but the engine is much more linear ("boring"). The power is high in the range for the 765, the MT09 has more torque in the middle. The position is also sportier on the 765.
I currently have an MT 10 SP, but want to get a 09 SP. Why?? Lighter bike, better at cornering and it feels more agile. Just my personal opinion. Can't go wrong with the triple sound
I have been WAITING for this. When the gen4 came out my immediate though was "damn the SP is gonna be a slick bit of kit" and was I right! Excellent review Chris, always fun watching you dick around on bikes. So glad to hear the keyless includes tank operation! BMW take notes
Looks like an absolute blast chris! Here in Australia it's about $5000 AUD more than the standard non SP variant so for that amount of difference would you think buying suspension upgrades for the non SP would be a better bang for the buck choice?
I'm aiming to get an SD1290GT later this year and if the finance for that doesn't materialise, my backup plan is to get an MT09SP. I don't see the backup as being that much less valid. It'd be nice to have the power, but the hooliganity (just invented that word, see? Anybody can be like Shakespeare) of both makes them, for me, two of the most alike bikes on the market. Maybe not in any single respect, but just in their basic outlook. BTW, the one thing I really don't like about the base one is those awful blue wheels, these are just so much nicer.
@@mikes.8305 Just the Ohlins rear shocks will run you $1100... Now add the Brembo brakes and you're already getting your monies worth without adding the KYB front forks.
Excellent video....for a motorcycle that redefined the profound notion of freedom, on a mean of transport that more than often is considered dangerous. Not too slow, not too fast, a platform that engages you to become a better rider, with ease. This motorcycle is a genuine smile machine!!! I remember the first time I test rode the gen1 MT09...it was an overwelming ecstasy... I couldnt comperhend the riding pleasure of that engine.... It provoceded me to do things effortlessly with total control, that I couldnt believe possible.. All in all...a 99% perfection for an average rider..., I guess....it is as good as it gets...!!! It is the Goldilocks zone of motorcyling!!! Enough said!!!
I wish reviewers would be a bit more accurate with things like pricing. This bike is actually £1700 pounds more than the standard 09, meaning it's probably not worth buying. If it was only a grand more expensive as stated in the video it would be better value than the standard 09, so the video is misleading.
Skids, wheelies, stopies, burnouts and general stupidity. That’s what the MT09 should always be about, just a machine that gives you the biggest smile.
New Mt09sp is really good bike… BUT… it loses more of its original charm… Previous mt-09sp is the Goldilock of “a bit of supermoto + a bit of road bike with proper front”. Chris compared last gen Mt-09sp to hypermotard. Another odd duck - unique yet undoubtly playful machine. Now the new gen of MT09sp becomes too much of road biased naked. It’s like now we need to compare to MonsterSP instead of hypermotard. It’s not a bad thing. More practical and maybe faster. But again, more fun? Not necessarily. Less unique? Sadly for sure.
Great stuff as always Chris, you never disappoint. One question bothers me. When will Yamaha give us the R9? Because when it appears, I will visit the Yamaha dealer on the same day.
I don't know man, this engine is great fun on a naked short bike. Might be a bit not enough for a supersport with a longer swingarm, like they did in the XSR900GP.
