.22 LR Handgun for Self Defense? CCI Stinger Ammo Test

Test of the CCI Stinger, 32 gr copper-plated hollowpoint, from the Ruger SR22 handgun. The SR22 has a 3.5" barrel. Will the short barrel affect performance of what is typically known as a varmint load for rifles? There is also a "bonus" about halfway through the test.
BTW, this ammo was purchased during the "shortage" of early 2013, from the Nashville Armory. First "Stingers" I had seen in several months.

I was a paramedic for 18 years. 8 of those on a Life Flight helicopter. I’ve seen a multitude of gsw’s. I can tell you this: you don’t want to get shot period. Bullets do strange things due to thickness of clothing, angle of the shooter, and ricochets off of bones. Some of the most gruesome and bloody gsw’s I responded to were from .22’s. Most were fatal.
@setherton9306
@setherton9306 Год назад
Sorry for replying to such an old comment, but I’ve been wondering about this for a bit. How does the ems/emergency room actually tell which caliber caused a GSW? Obviously it’s easy if the bullet was found intact in the wound, but it’s my understanding that hollow points tend to deform and/or fragment quite a bit when subjected to the irregular densities of human tissue, and fmj rounds tend to penetrate straight through. Please don’t take offense, I’m genuinely curious if there’s a method used to determine the cause of a GSW when the projectile is missing/deformed.

Many times the gun is still onscene. Sometime the bullet is still inside the body cavity. Most of the time the caliber is unknown, unless it's a shotgun blast.

My first handgun is a Taurus TX-22. I love it. Holds 16 rounds, and wherever I point, I make contact. Ballistics is important, but aiming is critical and since I don't go to the range often, nor have the money to buy ammo like that, I'll stick with my 22 any day of the week.
@paulojorgemachado5116
@paulojorgemachado5116 2 года назад
@@menomisespeanut you are wright. 22 lr is good for self defense ( my personal opinion) I know there will be people creticizing but is possible to aim and place more shots in less time and this is very important if we are dealing with multiple attackers, we have more chance to get out of a situation. The saying "stopping power" is controversial and no one is going to stop after getting shot and say is a 22, I will be fine! Just people with powerful drugs in the system if the shoot is in a leg or arm maybe they will don't fell the pain and continue walking but, if the shoot is in the head, they will drop dead before they realize they are actually dead. Is possible to kill a cow with a single shoot in the head and the bone tissue is thicker than the human one. Also if it is in. the chest ( heart) the result is the same. I prefer ,22 less expensive for training, very light guns, and less dangerous because of over penetration like comparing with 9 mm, and the shoots are more precise.

I keep a .22lr rifle by the bed. My wife keeps a .22lr TX Taurus bedside too. Both are loaded with CCI VELOCITOR rounds. We don't plan on killing our next door condo neighbor with a stray .38/.357 Mag, or a 9mm. Besides not too many intruders will stick around with a .22lr burning through them at 1435 fps from my rifle, or about 1200fps out of her pistol...and followed by a dozen more almost instantly.

I shot stingers out of a revolver with a 4" barrel and got very good expansion when shooting water jugs at 20 yards. That you got none with a 3.75" auto in ballistic gel when firing from 10 feet is surprising.

Mostly, but not all. Ballistics gel is supposed to more closely resemble flesh. Plain water is very "hard" and incompressible, which is why it causes expansion so easily. Add the various ingredients that make us... us, and you get a squishy mass that may be mostly water, but has different ballistic properties.

As a retired Peace Officer, my thinking about calibers was very traditional till I purchased a Ruger SR22 pistol at the height of the current ammo shortage and high prices. This firearm has changed my mind about personal defense handguns. I have never been able to do with my 1911, revolvers, or any other medium caliber handgun anything like the shooting I’m doing with the Ruger. At the distances most trouble happens and at the fastest the SR22 permits, I can double tap two to the heart in under 3 inches and then with care aim a head shot within 1 inch of point of aim. All the larger caliber handguns I’ve fired over the years that came anywhere close to that performance have been very tricked out and not practical or reliable for everyday carry. I’ve owned the Ruger for over two years now shooting at least 100 rounds per week. I’ve never had any failure to cycle or fire with Stingers. I have yet to have a gun-part failure. I’m examining the lock work regularly and not seeing much wear of note despite not oiling at every cleaning but nylon brushing the powder residue from mag lips, ramp, and barrel each visit to the range. Between shooting sessions I load 7 or 8 so as to not hold the springs at maximum. I de-cock and carry in condition three as I believe that having a handgun with me and available is a sufficient degree of readiness for my lifestyle. My life’s work gave me very big eyes. Holsters are starting to come onto the market for the Ruger though I had an FBI cant belt holster with thumb break made locally early on. Mostly I like to conceal it in items I everyday carry using a Maxpedition velcro accessory holster - mostly fanny packs and briefcases. I thank the maker of the video for his work which I find well balanced, well produced, and very informative. Good job.

There is a well known incident, where a police officer shot armed attacker 14 times with .45 cal. And 6 of those hit vital points, including liver, both lungs and the upper part of the heart. And he still kept coming and shooting the officer. It's not that much about shot placement, since nobody can't aim to a certain part of vitals, because nobody can't see them. Just a ballpark of where they are located.

I personally carry this handgun (Ruger SR22) with this same ammo everyday. I hope and pray that I will never be in a situation where I have to use it for a defensive scenario. I've taken my time to train for gun draw and accuracy. I know how to effectively dump the 10 rd mag at various distances. In my opinion, it's how accurately and effectively you can use such a tool to give you a better chance of success, something that is built with training. Even a bigger caliber gun can be as ineffective as sticking your tongue out to an assailant without proper training. -Jacko

I find the whole argument of whether or not a .22LR is suitable for self defense kind of silly. The comparisons and arguments about caliber and stopping power are moot. Just stop and think about these simple things. Do you think you, personally, could continue assaulting someone if they shot you with a .22? Even if they shot you in the leg, would you continue attacking someone? Think about the size of that round. I know it's very small. Imagine for a second someone stabs you with an ice pick that's about the same size. We all like to forget out the business at hand, but when it comes down to it, you are stabbing someone at range, with great force. There is the added effects of things like the round breaking apart, keyholing, expanding, exiting with a large exit wound or bouncing around internally. These all increase lethality, but all said and done, you are putting holes in a target. Totally forgetting about the force and percussion of that slamming into you at 1073 fps, just image someone stabbing you at the normal force and speed of a human arm, with an ice pick. I think for the average aggressor, which is normally just an average guy, that would stop them. Just imagine getting shot in the chest. It misses all the vitals and slams into a rub. Anyone who's broken a rib in sports can tell you that this will turn you off to the idea of moving in a hurry, even if the adrenaline is pumping. I sure as hell wouldn't want to be shot with a .22, just as much as I don't want to be stabbed with anything else. I think anyone who say's they can take a .22 round to the ribs and keep attacking or robbing someone, unimpeded, has seen too many action flicks.
@painlessguy
@painlessguy 9 лет назад
And I would say you haven't been to many bar fight scenes... People have been known to take multiple 22... hell even 9mm shots to the stomach, lower ribs, and keep fighting. One time a guy shot 3 times... still managed to shoot another guy after being shot those 3 times. They both had glock 9mm pistols and both died from their injuries. Thinking because you get the first shots off is going to save your life is silly. You want to stop a man in his tracks with a center mass shot get a .40 or better. There is a difference between stopping a man and being lethal.

painlessguy I dont think there would be a shootout in a self-defense situation. Imagine the typical scenario where a criminal who wants to mug you or rob your business or steal from your home or car but gets shot once and can still force themselves and fight but instead runs away due to risk of either getting shot again or getting caught. This is fine because he will not continue his attack. I really cannot think of a scenario where someone would get shot and continue to fight back. Conclusion: While what you say is true, I think for self-defense this round (or even a weaker one if possible!) would be "good enough."

The assailant could easily choose to shoot back. In a high stress situation their fight or flight reaction is going to take over. Who knows what way they will react. They won't be thinking clearly in the moment for sure. Maybe they go with the 5fight reaction... they may go with flight, but you can't really predict it. I'm not saying the 22 isn't lethal or very undesirable to be shot by. If it's all I had then yes it would be better than not being armed. I'm just of the opinion if you are going to choose a defense weapon there are much better rounds that produce a lot more knock down energy. A 22 stinger the bullet used in this demonstration from a pistol produces around 85ft/lbs of energy. Even a .380 will produce ~185ft/lbs of energy from a similar pistol with a similar length barrel using low end ammo, while keeping recoil very manageable. I personally have a 380, but it's not my top choice. I still stand by what I said if I'm going out to purchase a weapon for self defense the 22 isn't even going to get a blip on the radar. If I knew what I knew now when I bought my pistol I would have got a 45 acp and loaded it with 185gr bonded defense hollow points. This round carries 616ft/lbs of of energy and being a hollow point will not exit under most normal circumstances guaranteeing maximum transfer of energy to the assailant. A person should carry the gun that delivers the most energy to the target that they can handle efficiently and hit their shots with. Even the most inexperienced/small frame shooters should be able to handle a larger caliber than a 22 efficiently. Even the most gun shy should be able to handle a 380 pistol with some practice. Do you want "good enough" or the best chance when it comes down to your life?
@pk0179417
@pk0179417 9 лет назад
painlessguy True, the fight/flight thing is there but lets be honest. How many times have you heard of someone committing a felony who shoots back instead of running away? Its within possibility but you probably have a better chance of winning the lottery. When we are talking about "good enough" vs "best choice" we can always spend more to get more. In the end I think most people get guns for self-defense rather than out of hobby and due to this im sure most people would rather spend less per round getting more practice and being comfortable. This leads to more of a sense of security in my opinion than carrying a bigger gun/round especially when coupled with the fact that anyone who hears a gunshot will logically immediately flee. Now that I think about it, maybe it would be better to choose that whole .45acp thing instead of 22lr because one situation that can come up is someone being on drugs - a 45acp will infinitely be more useful than 22lr The points you make are valid on paper but in real life that doesn't translate very well...Unless youre in the military and are constantly put into situations where you are forced to fight. Then we can talk about lethality and such.

I don't think anyone questions the potential of a "psychological stop". The fact is, they happen all the time. Many would-be robbers flee/surrender at the sight & sound of someone with a gun, much less the sensation of being shot. Likewise, I would never want to be shot by a .22LR. They certainly *can* be lethal with good shot placement. All that being said, you don't carry and prepare for self-defense with the 99% of would-be thugs or home invaders in mind. You prepare for that rare 1% who, whether due to mentality, drug intoxication, or dumb luck *is* able to fight through the pain and shock of being shot to continue to threaten your life. For these types of threats, a psychological stop is insufficient. What happens when my bluff is called and my .22 doesn't particularly faze the angry man with a baseball bat intent on playing tee-ball with my head? Since I had neither the time, money, or inclination to train myself to the level of a CAG Operator, I can't exactly make a perfect CNS shot on a moving target under stress. Darn. Again, you're right. Most people who claim they'd shrug off a .22 if need be are indeed full of shit. In the majority of cases where you're confronted with a would-be criminal, it would be perfectly sufficient to convince them to take several rapid steps back and reconsider their life choices. However, I still wouldn't feel comfortable trusting it with other choices available. To say nothing of the inherent reliability advantage of centerfire cartridges. To each his own. .22LR can be perfectly viable for self-defense with the right loadings and plenty of practice. It has several merits in its favor. It's not *my* personal round of choice, but I respect those who feel otherwise. My argument is more aimed at the idea of relying on a psychological stop in a potentially life-or-death confrontation.

Over the years I have carried lots of different types of pistols. Everything from old school full sized .357 magnums down to a walther p .22. Even with today's ammo shortages I can still afford to shoot my p22 a lot more than my 9mm glock. I would rather have 3 or 4 critical hits with a .22 than 3 misses with my 9mm. Shot placement and practice is everything. If a .22 is all you can hit with than carry a .22. Its still better than nothing, and yes they will stop a threat.

I love your tests and I think I enjoy the 22lr tests the most of all of the calibers. But I have a question. First let me say that in general I agree that the loss of velocity that occurs when shooting 22lr out of a handgun means that we can not expect expansion; therefore, when picking a bullet for defensive use we should maximize penetration. But in your own test of the 40 gr Mini Mag the penetration achieved was less than that of the Stinger tested here. Doesn't that make a case for the Stinger as a prime choice in a defensive role out of a pistol (if, as you say, we've decided to drop down to the bottom floor of calibers for the purpose of defense)? I was surprised by the results as I expected that the CCI 40 gr solid would out penetrate the Stinger. Thanks.

I love your videos, and am a fellow Volunteer, born in Humboldt btw :-) I used to be convinced that a 9mm was the basement round, and wanted a .40 or .45 ideally. Then I got heavily involved in archery, and more on topic, air gunning. This afternoon, I was blowing .177 pellets through weather hardened 1/2" plywood at 20 yards like it was paper. My .380's shoot a 90 gr. bullet at the same velocity. My air gun pellets weigh 7.4 grains. In the 1945 ad for my High Standard G 380, General Julius Hatcher refers to the round as the "very efficient 9mm short" and it is. It was designed by John Browning, and like my Llama, is a 7/8th replica of the 1911, and the .45 ACP it is one of the top 3 calibers used by gang bangers to kill each other (besides .22 and 9mm) .22's are still the #1 killing caliber used by those folks. It works.

If everyone remembers how the patrol cop Mark Coates died, shot placement is key. (Video on RU-vid) He was shot with a .22lr derringer which his vest stopped. He shot his attacker 5 times in the gut with his .357 revolver in response and proceeded to report the incident by radio. His 300+ pound attacker got back up and shot him through the armpit with his second .22lr round which reached the heart killing the cop in 15 seconds. The revolver beat the derringer in both calibre size and capacity, but the one armed with the revolver still died and the derringer wielder lived to serve jail time. Shot placement is key.

Apatthetic Man What people also forget the 22 has very low recoil you can shoot as fast as you can pull the trigger or even full auto if your firearm has that capability and its common sense that you can fit more 22lr into a magazine than you can of 9mm or 38special not only you have more bullets to shoot you shoot faster and more accurately only differance is when people wear ballistic vests than a 22 lr might not be enough (I'm not a gun expert so i could make mistakes regarding calibers but you get the point)

true, but also true that you should be able to trust your gun in every situation, if youre agressor has a vest, if hes covered by some dor, etc etc. And in a gunfire situation you should not been worried about youre stopping power, also, in certain levels the stopping power is irrelevant, wich makes me think that the 9mm is the best option, it has a great penetration capability, stopping power and has not a high recoil

If you're going to use a .22LR handgun for self defense, I recommend the Ruger LCR. Eight rounds in a simple, double-action only, small and lightweight package. Worst case, you get a dud, and you just pull the trigger and it moves on to the next round. When I first tried my SR22, I got two misfires in the first 70 rounds, using CCI Mini-Mags. That might improve as the gun gets broken in, but if my life is at stake I want eight for sure instead of 10+1 maybe. Another advantage of the LCR22 is it's the gun you can hand to a friend or family member who's never been interested in guns but suddenly needs one (and hasn't been an anti-gunner either, in which he/she would be on his/her own if it were me, LOL). Nothing to remember; just point it in the right direction and keep pulling the trigger until the bad guy stops.

I spent years shooting woodchucks in PA with a Remington 576 pump .22 rifle. I compared the CCI Stingers to Remington Yellow Jacket hollow points, Federal hollow points, Winchester Super X ( a look alike for Stingers), and normal CCI hollow points. I lined up two liter bottles of water at about 30 feet. The Yellow Jacket was 2nd best for impact when it out a 2 inch wide split in the backside of the bottle. The Stinger split the bottle almost entirely in two at the middle and was the only one to also knock the bottle off (violently) from the bench they were all sitting on. So I used only Stingers for shooting woodchucks at 50-75 yards (yes - with a .22). And they were the only ones that would make a kill at that distance. I used other loads closer up and sometimes even with the eye shot the round would only wound the animal severely. I knew any head shot with a Stinger was instant lights out.

I carry a 40cal, but it is way to snappy for my wife, it is hard for her to shoot accurately, and she HATES shooting it. I am getting her an SR22 for self defense (of course, she wants the purple one). No matter what the 22LR haters say, facts do not lie, more people have died from a 22 than any other caliber. As others have said, shot placement is key, and she is VERY accurate with a 22. If my wife has to unload 1-10 rounds into an attackers chest or belly, he or she is NOT going to have a good day. ~Ken

Why not go with 9mm or 380ACP for your wife? Yes a 22 will kill somebody but the smaller the caliber the more on point your shots have to be. People please do not use 22lr for self defense. And anyway why would you when there r bigger calibers available?
@sudfamily
@sudfamily 10 лет назад
Thanks everyone for your replies, we love the SR22. It is a wonderful little pistol, and VERY reliable for a 22. I don't even mind carrying it as a back up gun, it being purple does not bother me. Kristyn, my wife just happens to be one of those people who is ridiculously recoil sensitive, it is what it is. She has a hard time with a 9mm, but can shoot our 22 pistol wonderfully. Ironically, our 10 year old son shoots my 40 really well, our 13 year old daughter even shoots it better than my wife. Despite the mentality that a 22 should not be used for self defense, it still kills more people each year than another round. Hinkley attempted to assassinate Reagon with a 22. He dropped a Secret Service agent with one shot to the belly, a police officer with one shot to the back of the neck and hit Brady in the head. Neither of those men got back up. One of the bullets bounced off of the car door, hit Reagon, went through his lung, and ended up only an inch or two from his heart. Brady was rendered mentally handicapped after the incident and is the reason for the "Brady Bill" that made background checks mandatory. There is case after case were a criminal killed someone easily with the "lowly" 22, or were someone killed an attacker with it in self defense. Real world facts do not support the idea that the 22 cannot be an effective self defense weapon. For people like my wife, it is a very viable option regardless of the stigma attached to it. ~Ken

Kristyn K At least she is carrying a gun, and there are those like my grandmother who can no longer handle the recoil of any pistol larger than a .22 WMR due to a hand injury. It is better to have a low caliber firearm than no firearm at all, and most attackers will cease the attack at the mere presence of a firearm because they do not want to be shot.

Excellent video and good information give, one of the best I have seen. Some one asked if a .22 would kill? I assume they are referencing from a short barrel pistol, the answer is yes. The Israeli Massad's favorite assassination weapon was a small ,22 Beretta. However that was very close and generally a head shot at the base of the brain. Not even close to ideal but if it is all you have, better than a knife. One thing to remember most are carrying defensively so warding off an attacker who has the operation to get away from a hail of .22LR will run. Police on the other hand are trying to apprehend someone, so either disable them totally or kill them. Of course if your attacker is armed and carrying a 9mm or .40 you are at a heck of a disadvantage. So carry the biggest you can be comfortable with and handle well.

+Joe Schmoe honestly, what's nastier is the denim that was delivered with the round, from what I've read that can be just as life threatening as the bullet due to infection. hehe but yeah man, that really surprised me that one made it thru the entire block oO, and from the pistol, not even the rifle! I guess since the round retained it's smaller shape that friction didn't play as much of a role in stopping it short.

The bullets and shotgun pellets most frequently encountered are 50-100 percent lead with an outer material made of a metal or alloy harder than lead (copper, nickel, steel, or aluminum).[3,4] In gunshot wounds to a joint, contact of the bullet with the synovial fluid can be associated with an increased incidence of lead toxicity.[5] Bullet fragmentation and the surface area of lead exposed to synovial fluid correlate with the increased lead levels in the blood.[6] The onset of symptoms of lead poisoning can range from two days to 52 years after the gunshot wound.[1,2] The reason for this long interval is unclear." www.medscape.com/viewarticle/735071_3

Excellent and thorough review. Obviously .22 (as you mentioned) is the bottom tier, but some folks may not have another caliber choice. So, 7 or 10 rounds fired into center mass of an attacker is most likely to cease an attacker(s), and a head shot is a bonus stop! Watched an episode of COPS where a big guy was shot in the pectoral area with a .25 caliber. The round didn't penetrate but you could see a bulge on the guys back shoulder blade where the round almost exited. Needless to say he was distraught, in semi shock, but still walking around. Good advice about the 40 gr round.

I'm glad you did the handgun test from a proper self-defence range, rather than 15-25 yds like some people have done. 10 feet is much more realistic. Expansion or not, you put three rounds of .22 into someone and they are going to have critical wounds going right through their vital organs. Also, the change of not hitting bone with a centre of mass shot is very small, so deformity of the bullet will definitely occur. This will case direction change as well as likely greater damage. A .22 is absolutely OK for self defence.

Something that I think is worth noting in regards to .22LR for the defensive role is the reliability of the cartridge itself. In my experience, .22LR -- being a rimfire cartridge -- is inherently more prone to FTFs and other issues than centerfire rounds. Buying high-quality ammunition (CCI or the Federal Premium stuff, for instance) *can* mitigate this to some extent, but even then on my range trips I've noticed that using the higher quality ammunition brings the overall level of reliability to, at best, roughly on par with steel-cased bulk centerfire ammo. Not exactly a paragon of reliability. It's for this reason that I've heard of many people using .25 ACP -- which is actually even slightly *less* powerful than .22LR -- for self-defense instead, simply because it's a centerfire cartridge. I'm not trying to knock .22LR. It's a great cartridge that's very popular (and rightfully so) and in the right hands it can definitely stop a threat. I'd rather have a single-shot .22LR than nothing during a life or death encounter. Just something worth keeping in mind.

ohh long johnson+ Why is he wrong? Can you do better than just dismiss a claim instead of explaining why? My .22 pistol has 140 ft/lbs per bullet. I have 10+1. I expect to put half of those rounds in an intruder in an emergency situation. That's 700 ft/lbs in total. A moose would die from that let alone a mere 200# man.

I own a Ruger SR22. It is great .22 pistol. I think one of the best out there. With the right ammunition it is easily a good choice for self-defense, at home or CCW.

Nice Video... There is over 1/2 a dozen coyotes, 30-40 jack rabbits and hundreds of ground squirrels that wished this round was never invented... If there was a rib bone in the gel and was hit with the bullet... massive damage.. for a .22

I have great respect for your knowledge and for the professionalism of your videos; THANK YOU. Every defensive firearm/ammunition SYSTEM has a single overriding objective: INSTANTANEOUSLY to TERMINATE the threat (and I do NOT necessarily mean to kill it, but rather to ensure it can no longer cause any immediate harm). Threat elimination one (or ten) minute after the round(s) impacts simply is unacceptable, since it is obvious that a LOT of very bad things can occur in that seemingly brief interim period (the FBI's 1986 Miami shootout debacle illustrates this principle quite effectively). My concern with any "mouse gun" (with any round) is the probability of immediate and complete threat removal is GREATLY reduced (and, quite candidly, it is not especially high with any sidearm). Some will suggest that lots of individuals have been killed by .22, .25, and .32 handgun loads; while that is factual, it does not address two CRUCIAL questions: (1) how much time transpired until the threat ceased and (2) where was the threat hit? A central nervous system and/or heart penetration is almost certain to eliminate a threat quickly, however, how likely is that in "real world" defensive circumstances (at night, in an unfamiliar venue, when just awakened, when overloaded by a potentially lethal situation, with a weapon that has a very small sight radius, when possibly wounded or night-blind . . . and the foregoing list is only the "tip of the iceberg")? The ballistic test -- per se -- is just fine, but I'm not too sure the implied recommendation is wise.

While I mainly carry a Remington 1911A1 in the perennial .45 ACP in a side mounted rig or shoulder rig in the winter, I also carry a Walther P22 first year production in the small of my back at all times as a spare. Sometimes in the summer if I just want to wear basketball shorts and a tank top I'll drop the 1911 and just carry the Walther around my property because of it's lighter weight. I honestly love the little gal and I've never had an issue with her to this day after 5 years of ownership.

Personally in my opinion if I was going to use a .22lr handgun for self defense, I would not use a pistol. I would use a double action revolver. With a pistol if you have a round that wont go BANG then you have to manually clear that round. With a double action revolver all you have to do is pull the trigger again. Some revolvers like the Ruger LCR .22lr holds eight rounds. Just my opinion.

Thank you for the video. And don't let the "experts" get you down. Any older farm boy will tell you that a 22 properly placed will kill a large pig or a large steer. We used to do all of our own butchering, and used a 22 to kill them. As far as self-defense goes, if the bad guy knows that you have a firearm and are willing to use it, he will pick on someone else. I want him to hear the shot and see the muzzle flash. If the first one does not scare him away, I will just take a head shot. Most of us do not carry a badge, do not have color of law, and will end up paying our own legal fees. We will also pay any medical expenses that the bad guy incurs, plus pay his family for "loss of companionship. I prefer to scare him away instead of actually shoot him. My personal carry is a little larger than .22, but I would not feel at all "under gunned" with a dependable 22.

I personally wouldn't rely on .22LR for self defense; however .22LR is better than nothing. On the other side of that I've known guys to survive multiple shots from an AK pattern rifle in Iraq (not US with body armor) from around 100 meters out and a case my mother (retired LEO) who investigated a shooting where a person died from one shot from a .22LR handgun because it hit him directly in the heart. So, it's all in your preference and what you are comfortable with and competent with when it comes to your defense choice. Just know the draw backs and work the the tool to its strengths. I don't use .22LR for defense due to its lack of penetration through car doors (won't go in the target's body deep enough to cause enough damage to stop a threat). But with the lower recoil of .22LR it would theoretically be easier to maintain rounds on a fixed target. Just know you and know your tool.

Expansion vs penetration in this test shows the reletive same effect. The total ammount of damage to a suspect would be equal, in my opinion. Control and accuracy of placement would surpass damage from expansion. Thank you, great video.
@Joetrout
@Joetrout 8 лет назад
Quick question? If the stinger did not expand why would you just go with a solid if you get the same thing? Is it because of the additional 8 grains? Keep in mind you will be losing even more velocity with the solids

I remember when I was a kid I defended myself with a .22 pellet gun. A bigger teenager tried to jack my dirt bike, He pulled a knife. I shot him six times with a pellet pistol in the chest. As the gun came out and the first bang sounded, the look on his face was holy $hit terror. It doesn't matter what you carry, a roll of dimes in a work glove, dog spray, rolling pin, or cousin Vinnie. It's no good if it is home, and its no good if you hesitate. Self defense is about stopping the attack not killing (if the poop bag dies then bonus). My test theory (it's still unproven) go to the local bar pick up a pretty girl go back to your place, let her shoot you in a lung with a .22 pistol and please tell us the results of your sexual experience after you are shot.

Archangel Michael very true. i'm a stay at home mom of 4 with a new baby, my husband works midnights and I just started thinking about how vulnerable I am home alone overnight with these babies. I played out scenarios in my head about a home invasion. it scared the crap outta me. What would i do? I realized I wasn't prepared. my children and I could be easy victims. I decided to get a pistol, I started with a ruger sr22 because I felt like I could handle it, it wasn't overpowering. Once I got past the intimidation phase and I realized that I was in control of this handgun I quickly moved to a 9mm.

A Crosman 38T CO2 Pistol is not bullshit. It is a fast action revolver for a pellet gun based on a S&W- K .38 special. Now you can go back to being the smartest guy in the world because you learned something new.

I am okay with guns, but knives are where it's at. I have a 4-inch 36-year old stiletto in good condition passed down from my father. You don't have to reload knives, but the bad part is that stilettos are illegal and guns do help bluff

***** My wife is more accurate with a .22 than a .380, she isn't afraid of the recoil on the .22 so she can mag dump 9/10 rnds into a torso in about 2.5 seconds. With the .380 she manages 2 or 3 out of 6 in 10 seconds. Which seems deadlier?

Redshift313 my idea of self defense is, as soon as you exposed your gun to a possible mugger, it deters them even without firing a shot or pulling gun from holster. I’m definitely okay with .22 especially a magnum.

I’m 200+, I can shoot a 9mm very well, why do I carry a SR22...I can dump 11 rds into a fist sized target at 10+ even without a perfect grip, stance etc. single handed doesn’t matter. It’s easy to shoot and it works. The statistical likelihood that you will ever even draw and point at a person is stupidly low, of those the likelihood of this gun not being sufficient is even lower

My boyfriend just bought me this gun. It's what I wanted. I knew I wanted a .22 because of the low recoil, so I watched many reviews and saw that the Rugar misfired the least. This .22 pistol got me over my fear! I'm happy he bought it for me but I'm also happy he bought himself a 9mm :)

i'm no expert but i would guess that with the low recoil of the .22 you could just keep your gun on target and keep pulling the trigger until the threat is no more.

Had a problem with CCI minimags expanding reliably from a 3" revolver. Took a very small star head screwdriver and sharpened the front edges then pressed it firmly but carefully into the cavity to cut grooves into the inside of the cavity. Thereafter they expanded reliably.
