22 year old Phenom Munetaka Murakami Makes HISTORY in Japan!
Muneta Murakami is a highly touted Japanese baseball player who plays for the Tokyo Yakult Swallows. Murakami hit 56 home runs in the 2022 season to become the record holder for the most in the history of the NPB as a Japanese-born player. The record was set by the baseball legend known as Sadaharu Oh and has been in place for the past 58 years. Murakami showed he had the potential to achieve the feat because of his raw power from an early age and continually got better in the league. He is considered a superstar in the sport in Japan and will become a sought-after prospect when he likely moves over to Major League baseball in the near future.

I think he just signed a 3 year extension after which the swallows said he would be available for MLB teams to try sign him. I definitely think he wants to try come over to the MLB he not only is inspired by what Shohei has done but he said wants to try to do even more, at least from a hitting perspective. I think Japanese players are using Shohei as the blueprint and some but not all of the team who won the WBC will probably make their way over in their own time.

No one remember 73 as well as the other big numbers. It is the record for sure, but I always go back and forth in my head whether its 72 or 73. I've seen tons of broadcaster be uncertain which number it actually is too. It is not nearly as enduring as some of the other numbers because of how tainted it is. Same with 714 (along with 715) and 755. Those numbers just have much more meaning than I think somewhere in the 760s where Bonds landed. I can't remember what he ended up with there either, somewhere 761-764ish I think. 70 in 98 was significant but I think it being a round number plus what that home run race meant to the sport sinks that number in deeper than the other numbers achieved through cheating.

As a Swallows fan: Because with the guys like Tuffy and Cabrera, the pitchers would actively pitch around. As in not even challenging them. But with Murakami, you could tell he was going into a slump. The pitchers did challenge him a lot. He was swinging at pitches he wouldnt swing at before, and he sacrificed accuracy for power just to try and get over the last hump. He was hitting under .150 in that period, but was still walked a decent amount(he has the highest walk rate in the NPB by a mile these past 2 seasons).
@meltednostrilsbornwithoutn781
@@Bobhydara3 bullshit
@nuntan
@nuntan Год назад
The reputation of Japanese league pitchers pitching around foreign players to hinder their chance to break Oh's record is rooted primarily in one particular event when Randy Bass of Hanshin Tigers who in 1985 had 54 HRs going into the final game of the season against Tokyo Giants, was walked intentionally in 4 of 5 at bats. This event received especially high volume of Japanese and foreign media coverages because Giants is the team Oh played his entire career + Oh was managing the team at the time (though it was revealed later that the decisions to walk Bass were made by the pitching coach without Oh's consent). This incident was vocally criticized even among the Japanese baseball community and, of course, the fans. One good thing that came out of it is that it helped to change the attitude of Japanese teams and pitchers when facing the foreign players on the verge of breaking not just Oh's but also a Japanese baseball record. It made them more conscious, even weary, of being the target of criticisms, which prompted them to be more inclined to challenge foreign hitters. This is evidenced by the fact 3 foreign hitters have since either tied or broken Oh's season HR record - Wladimir Valentin with 60 (Breaking Oh's season HR record and setting a new Japanese baseball record) in 2013. Tuffy Rhodes and Alex Cabrera with 55 (Tying Oh's record) in 2001 and 2002, respectively.

There will be an adjustment period just like Ohtani, but in a year in the MLB, he will greatly improve if he is dedicated. The kid is 21 years old. Lots of room to grow. He needs to go to MLB while he is still young and be posted as soon as possible to allow a learning curve to pass and make him grow his natural talent.
