Time to test the 243 Precision Load Development we worked up. I was very happy with the 95 gr Berger bullets we ran. Got the group size dialed in. Now the next step is to get the speeds and work up the Ballistic charts using Ballistic AE.

I just started loading the Berger’s in a rem 700 for 243 . 95 grain also . Unfortunately , mag wouldn’t take rounds on the lands or even up to .040 off . Found a sweet spot .065 off lands . Thanks for sharing your videos

My best .243 group at 100 yards was with a Stevens 200 Factory coutour, no accutrigger,, Tasco 3X9X32, using Hornady Custom 75 gr. flat based hollow points. from homemade sandbags. 3 shot group (only usually shoot three shot groups) Inside a dime, or .457 center to center. Caliper measurement was more like .38 inches since they were inside the dime---placed on top of the group covering three shots . Not bragging, cause I never shot one like that again with probably the cheapest rig ever. I don't know what powder Hornady used in that load, but it was a good one. :)

Ha...kinda funny cause I'm headed up to MO in a few days to visit Sierra Bullets, , first time finally. Started loading in early 70's in San Jose when Sierra came out with the Spitzer Boat Tail in the 308. Plan on going around the corner to visit Star Line Brass after Sierra. I recently picked up a ROSSI 243, sweet. Must say I was surprised of light recoil. Looking forward to working with the 243, good info and important points brought out on the reloading and testing. My best with the 95 grain Berger hunting VLD is 1/4 MOA using BR2 primers, Lapua brass, 42 grains of 4350. 0.001 off the lands.

Thank you for sharing your expertise... what does on the lands mean? I assume you are referring to the lands of the rifling within the bore. How do I measure that n a particular barrel?

Tried the 105s vld in a cva hunter and it was about a 13in group and 100 yards. 1:10 won’t shoot the 105s for sure but the 75gr vmax is a laser in the same gun. I tried everything to get a 100 yard hunting group and wasted 100 bullets and days. At least they are gone now lol.

Hi partner. I really enjoy your straight forward no nonsense approach. I'm making a prediction that the .243 caliber is going to be the next hot thing in long range shooting....if not the .243 then the 6mm bullet is going to be the new hot trend. Obviously not new to you or me, but currently I am hearing the 6mm range of cartridges is gaining major momentum in the competition shooting world. A .243 with a fast twist and a long throat so you can load long is going to be the ticket for those high BC bullets like the bergers you've got. Tight groups. Its obvious you are passionate about what your doing.

Chad Harzbarger thanks for the comment.! I'm thinking very hard about building this new rifle in to the .243 Ackley Improved. Bullets are the same but case life is greatly extended and the speeds are much faster. I haven't decided 100% just yet, but I'm leaning that way.!

Chad Harzbarger For sure the 243 and 6 mm beats larger calibers like 308 and even 300 Win Mag at longer ranges. That’s why i shoot 243. Believe me i beat them all and they don’t really like it. For me this was the best choice for accuracy at long range. Regards from France!!! (Yep, we also have guns here).... 😎🇫🇷🎯🇫🇷😇

What kind of chamber does the gun have? If it's a SAAMI spec (regular factory) chamber, then it's probably .005" or .006" oversize, so neck turning will generally be a waste of time - unless it has a tighter bench rest chamber. With SAAMI chambers, I've found that using regular resizing and seating dies usually produces the same accuracy. Because by neck turning you're taking even more brass off the case neck, (an extra .001" or .002"), thus allowing the bullet to wobble even more, not less. Having said that, I've found exceptions. I've had a number of 300 Remington Model 700 Rem Ultra Mags, with custom barrels (but with SAAMI chambers) where the accuracy was improved by outside neck turning. However, with the Weatherby calibers, I found neck turning made no difference at all, especially with their relatively long free bore. I've also spent a lot of time getting the run out of my hand loads down to .002" or so. Nevertheless, the groups were no better than those with rounds having several times the run out. Interestingly, a long time ago, I measured the run out of a box of Federal Gold medal 308 match ammo with 175 grain Sierra bullets on my RCBS Case Master. Their run out was all over the place. But again, unless you've got a match grade chamber, it probably won't make much difference. You need to have 4 or 5 groups of each load for statistical reliability. One group of each load won't be reliable. As well, when using Norma cases, or any cases of different manufacture, one has to take that into consideration when using reloading data. Even primer brands can make a significant pressure difference. Some Norma cases, such as their 300 Win Mags and their Weatherby cases that are also made by other manufacturers (e.g., 7 mm Wby, 300 Wby, 30-378 Wby), are 20 or 30 grains lighter. Thus that will also have a significant effect on loading data. For example, I used to make 375 H&H hand loads from 300 Wby and 340 Wby Norma brass because they would hold an extra 3 grains of powder over the Winchester cases and give me 50-75 fps more velocity FOR SOME BULLETS. So, as they say, when hand loading without a chronograph, you only think you know what you are doing. If I were spending all that time and money on load development, I'd want a better scope than a SWFA Super Sniper. Not that there's anything wrong with them, but I'd want something that would have a higher level of quality control, just in case of parallax problems etc.

It's a tight chamber, this was a special order from Shilen. I hope to get a SB PMII scope one of these days. But the cost for me to build a bunch of rifles doesn't leave much cash to buy high dollar scopes unfortunately. I think when I build my 6.5x47 Lapua I'll top it with some nice glass since that will be my new PRS Rifle.

It's up to you but, in addition to measuring fired case heads for high pressure signs, I've always chronographed my hand loads (I almost never use factory ammo) and saved them in a dedicated notebook. It doesn't take much more time and the additional info is so helpful. Among the custom barrels I've had only one was a Shilen - for a 270 Weatherby Mag. chambered on a rebarreled Remington 700. It had the standard .378" Weatherby free bore for that caliber, but still shot .6 MOA at 200 yards with 150 grain Nosler Partitions. The IMR handout for IMR 7828 showed 73.5 grains gave 3,280 fps @ 54,100 cup. (I was careful to use Norma cases, not the much heavier, reformed Remington brass.) Actually, I went 1/2 grain more to 74.0 grains and averaged 3,263 fps. So having a chronograph told me everything was behaving pretty much as it should - as I moved up 1 grain at a time, every 5 shots. (That load exceeded the load in the Nosler manual; however, I knew from experience that the Nosler data was old and very conservative. Or maybe they used a Lilja barrel with less free bore. Whatever, to be safe, I called up Mike Harris at Nosler to discuss the data discrepancy before proceeding. Firing a number of groups for statistical validity, I also noticed that the groups with another bullet shrank when I switched from a Bushnell Elite 4-16x 50mm to a Leupold Mark IV 3.5 -10 x 40mm. When starting out, I've had cheap scopes give me mediocre groups. Trouble is, if parallax errors are mild, you won't notice a whole lot of difference in group size and may think it's the gun. I know that SWFA scopes are highly regarded, but it's always followed by the qualification "for the price." If they're selling a scope for $299, chances are that it cost less than $30 (or so) to make in the Orient. So what kind of quality control will you get for $30? I know binoculars quite well, and you can't get decent binoculars for less than $1,000 US (i.e., Zeiss Conquest). You don't have to spend that much on a scope, but I think scopes like a Leupold Vari X-III or a Bushnell Elite 4500 would be the least that I would accept if I was spending a lot of time and money on load development. In fact, it makes sense to spend more on the scope than on the gun. I put a Zeiss Diavari 3-12x56 mm on my Remington 700. After all, even mediocre barrels will shoot MOA these days, however, the same can't necessarily be said for the repeatability, accuracy and durability of cheap rifle scopes.

Not sure why a 95 grain would require a 1:8 in a 243 other than bullet design. Bearing surface of only 1/3 the bullet's length explains it for me. What powder were you using?

The factory 243 1in10 or 1 in 9 Barrel rate of twist will work best with 90 grain or lighter as a general guideline. The 100 grain loads are randomly marginally stabile.

In my 40 years of reloading for the .243 I"ll say for almost certainty that with rare exception most loads should be pushed up to the lands of the barrel. Actually...that holds true for most high power rifles. This holds true for my .223(600 yd single fed match round only) .280, .270 and .308. My Garand is the only one which likes the 168 Sierra backed off a couple thou...but I'm only shooting it 200yds.

Jake Birkmaier usually you’ll need to get the bullets touching the lands. This often makes the length to long to feed in a mag. So they shoot them single shot
