The majority of young adults are working the 9-5. Maybe not because they want to, but because it's the most secure and attainable lifestyle. Unfortunately if everyone worked their passion job, I doubt our society will run properly. There has to be that bulk of the population that works the boring jobs to keep the gears turning.

9-5 without a doubt. Firstly you need a balance between work and life; the type of people who can actually truly work 247 and be fine and passionate is extremely rare and trying to emulate that when you are not one of those types of people is a recipe for mental and physical disaster. Secondly, I'm a big advocate of the whole "love what you do but don't do what you love" mindset. I love my job but it is so much better for me to be able to go after work and just relax and do my hobby at the pace that works for me with no unnecessary stress added or having anyone rushing me to finish it as if it's a race or something.
@AceRanger20
@AceRanger20 Год назад
This! I fully agree, my personal approach can be summed up as “I don’t live to work, I work to live.” I do what I need to so that I can survive and enjoy my hobbies as I go. I’m fairly big into rock climbing so it’s not something that can be really enjoyed with an extremely late start, I.e. starting after the 24/7 hustle pays off and you can finally enjoy yourself. Being able to burn the candle at both ends to reach an amazing position in life and coast off of that would also have its benefits for sure. But you can still build a great life without killing yourself early on, I’ve only been in the work force for just under 4 years and I am about to purchase my first home, by myself, off of my 9-5 income. Sacrifices were made and there were a lot of comforts that I have gone without, but it’s paid off and I still have plenty of time to improve and enjoy my hobbies.

I feel like once something becomes a job, it loses the whole “want” part. It isn’t out of love but of obligation, and that kinda sucks the fun out of my passion. I agree. When I was a music major I didn’t realize how much of my enjoyment was taken out of singing/ learning instruments until I moved back home and didn’t have to practice. Before I knew it 6 months had gone by before I sat at a piano again. It’s a common occurrence among freshman music majors but I had prided myself at not being one of those…apparently it just took longer for me. Now I have job I enjoy but isn’t my passion, where I work 10 hours a day but I get a 3 day weekend, and I can do my hobbies (music and baking) as much as I want. I started baking for my coworkers and I do occasionally bake things to sell but every time someone asks if I would ever try to open a bakery I say no. I don’t want it to be a job. I just enjoy making people happy through desserts.

I have the same feeling. I even had this problem a while ago, where I was making a crochet bra for myself and my mom commented that she thought that a bikini was going to sell (I do crochet both as a hobbie and to sell. Usually plushies though). I immediately decided to switch from making it for myself to making it to selling, but it sucked almost all the joy I was having with that project; cause it turned from something comfortable I wanted to make for me to wear, to something pretty to sell. I enjoy to do things because I WANT to do them. If I want to do something to sell, or for someone else, I'll still enjoy it because I wanted to do it. If I'm doing It just out of obligation, then it suddenly becomes dull. I have to be interested to like, even if there's an obligation, if I want to do it or not completely defines how I feel about something; even if it's a sort of activity I enjoy, if I'm not doing it because I want to, I won't like it.

Exactly. Like if it's a duty, it's not a wish anymore. Wish gives you an opportunity to quit, duty doesn't. And as someone who's got bad health and 38 hours of just classwork (I'm a teacher, I'm not even legally allowed to have that many hours a week because teachers often have a ton of responsibilities outside classwork that are kinda, KINDA factored in, but not really) on 2 different jobs, I can definitely say that I'm basically doing this because one job simply isn't enough to sustain myself. And I'd love to have a bit less work (ideally no more than 20-30 hours of classes) so that I had the tiniest bit of energy for my hobbies and stuff. Gaming has been my only solace recently and I'm glad I can at least manage to keep it separate from my work. But I wish I had more energy for other hobbies and some interaction outside classrooms. Like I actually absolutely adore most of my students, they are some of the sweetest people I know (I mostly work with teens and adults), but I still want some energy to be able to go out with friends

I used to do 9-5, now I do what I love for myself, it's true that you'll never work a day in your life in the same sense that I worked the 9-5, where every weekday I looked forward to the weekend, and every weekend I dreaded over Monday. Now? I wake up and I look forward to getting on with my work, I'm excited to start each day, after dinner my gf has to try to get me to join her and relax, there's no longer such a thing as weekend. The sentiment of the message is not even close to a lie, but it's just not what you may expect. "Do what you love, and you'll never hate working again a moment in your life." May be more accurate, but chances are you'll also be working a whole lot more, you'll just be enjoying it.

@@seraby7151 its so that if you get tired of your job you have a favorite hobby to lean on. If you were to become an artist and get home tired and want to relax with a fun activity. You could play a videogame but you can't do what you love most, because what you love most has now become your job, and anytime you're drawing or painting something you're doing it to get paid by selling it rather than for fun. Over time, the idea of painting for free and for fun (without a pay) will feel more like a chore than a hobby. Your favorite thing to do has now become your tiring nightmare and you have nothing to lean on outside of work (aka; extracurriculars) because what has been your escape your life, is now what you do for money. If you were to be a pro gamer though, you could play games, practice, and do what you love. But once you get tired, you can come home and chill to making a drawing. Now what you have spent hours on to become your escape in life, is still your escape, and you can continue to enjoy it without it feeling like a chore. Also, no matter how much you enjoy your career, the industry of every career has a way to make you hate something about your occupation. You can still be passionate about it, but there are things that now make you hate it, which didn't exist before. Anyways yea, long response for simple quote. Can I give you my personal experience from an “older” perspective? I grew up in a time (I’m a baby boomer) when you went to college, worked for 30+, retired (got the gold watch) and went on to follow your passion at the ripe old age of 65!!!! Well, I see today things are different and I don’t think that the new generation is wrong! I raised my kids and then went back to school and graduated from graduate school when I was 50 years old. I worked for many years (before and after graduating) and now I am not as healthy as I would like to be and my husband and I take care of his parents who are ill. So here is the advice, do what you love! If you are able to make a living in whatever makes you happy then do it now! There will always be time to get the house with the white picket fence, if that is what you want. But one thing you will never have again is your youth, your health and your freedom to do what you want to do! 💜🦋💜

Interesting. I get where you are coming from, and this is only a different perspective I’m going to provide. I talked to some people who are 20 years older than me and asked if they ever had any regret that they wanted to try a different role. They said, initially they did it due to work, but then they were able to do the work they love, whilst working in that same organization. What I’m trying to point out is, the job you choose can be one that has multiple roles that you can try out or change within the same organization. You need to clarify what you love, because it is very vague and non specific which cannot be rationalized, therefore the answer of your question will always be limited in any regard. You are setting up yourself to fail with those type of statement. For example, work in a hospital, start of basic role, require further education and skills to specialize. Still get to help people and learn about pathological science everyday. Want more challenging role? Acquire a project, do Phd or become medical doctor. Your question show be really define and not vague. Vague question or answers lead no where and that is the number one problem people don’t understand. Once you get to a certain point of knowledge, you will understand what I’m saying

I was quite lost going into college and didn't exactly know what I wanted to do once I finish it, so I chose the major that suited me best (English) and thought that I could turn my hobby, writing, into my occupation one day; a counselor there advised not to do that because she once tried the same and for her, it ended up in her gradually losing interest in writing and becoming more of a burden as now her income depended on it, so she went into teaching. After about one year of studying English I realized that for me, the same was happening and I started losing interest in writing as it was now required to be "professional" and also graded professionally, so I ultimately ended up changing my major to Computer Science in order to work as a developer after college; needless to say this reignited my interest in writing as a hobby, so keeping your hobbies just as that is imo the better option, they're called hobbies for a reason

Random tip I heard that I really love: Passion isn’t the end all be all when it comes to picking a job. Sometimes practicality and general interest can be deciders, and from the experience: seeing all the people you help; lived you change; growing to love the field; passion can grow. So basically, don’t always chase passion because it can come after.

When I was in my 20's, I made the mistake for working for people whose businesses were their "passion project" or their "dream." I found that they not only dived right into a field they knew nothing about but were so invested that they could not emotionally detach themselves from the business. This created extremely toxic environments where fights were regular and basically no one was happy, and the owners eventually burned themselves out or ran out of money due to poor financial/business sense. Now I work a regular job for a corporate behemoth and it is a far healthier environment, ironically enough. Everyone takes their job seriously, but keeps a healthy distance between the personal and business sides of life. It is now very rare to see someone so invested in the work that they feel the need to blow up or emotionally melt down in front of a captive audience. Hope you find your happy place, cheers!

I feel like I did it right for me. I’ve worked a 9-5 working at a bank and on my off time I was personal training. Working out was a hobby of mine and I eventually got certified to train. Talked to my uncle who is also a PT and he helped me create a contract for my clients and I. Made some business cards and would hand them to my members/customers if they am ever wanted to work on themselves. I’m 32 now and I started that at 21 and I honestly couldn’t be more proud of me and how I managed everything. But I was always working. Get up super early to workout myself, then work my 9-5, then training 2-3 clients after work and repeat. Somehow I managed to still be able to meal prep too. Now that I’m older and have a lot saved up I can chill a little more and I’m still very young

Yes, occasionally I’d have a very small snack to ward off the hunger till night came, but the less you do that, the quicker your body gets used to eating once a day. Than again, this was during COVID times, no extra energy expended leaving the house and doing chores, but was still wonderful for me because I could eat junk food. Honestly. I work in an art gallery. It’s really fun. I don’t make much money from it, but I make enough to buy groceries. And I genuinely enjoy my job. I love art, and it’s very fun to work in a gallery. I help to set up the displays and make them eye catching. I organize files and make sure each painting has the correct name tag. It’s busywork but I enjoy it. On top of that, I go to school. I’m about to graduate with my BFA. And I’m currently working on a graphic novel and record podcasts with my friends. I think I’ve decided that I’m not going to consider myself a failure if I’m not a hustler. I’m happy where my life is right now. Yes, I am hoping my graphic novel and podcasts are successful. But if not, it’s just something I enjoy doing. I like having the time and freedom to go to work and school and have a hobby I enjoy.
