Can't wait to do this in about two months!! Just had my breast reconstruction surgery, so I can hopefully start yoga again by the 3rd month!!! I am also doing a hormone treatment to keep any cancer from possibly returning since my cancer is hormone sensitive. These hormone treatments will increase my chances to avoid recurrence..... but one of the side effects is loss of bone density... so will be doing this regularly!!! Thank you, Susannah. MISS YOU!!!!! xoxo

Hi Rana! I'm thinking about you today. I am so glad you are healing and doing treatments to keep cancer at bay. I can also appreciate that all of this, most especially surgery, can really sap your energy!! I know it's Drs. orders to take it easy as you should. I do look forward to offering you some bone density tips when you are ready!. Also, I suggest starting movement practice with my video Less is More. It starts with a Qui Gong warm up. Remember to modify modify modify!!!! Miss you too!!!

Just did your second bone density yoga video. Thanks for demonstrating the heel bounces. I'll be doing those while waiting in line. I learned a few years ago that eating seaweeds is also a really good way to increase calcium and good for those of us who are lactose intolerant. Love the crunchy texture sprinkled on soups, salads and just eating from the package. There are also lots of other vitamins in certain types. VitaminSea is the brand I got in Maine. They make a nice shaker with what they call sea vegetable flakes.

Hi, i really appreciate your videos and recently joined the FB group so am learning a lot on how different people approach building bone density. While I take responsibility for my actions, I am confused that some say those with low bone density should not do twists or bends. do you have any thoughts? I'm avoiding until I have a better understanding to make a decision for my practice thanks.

Hi Susannah, I love doing your yoga exercises, I started just a couple weeks ago. My goal is to increase my bone density also. :-) I've been also adding in the daily heel bounce up to 30 now and the daily bridge pose. I'm anxious to do your yoga with weights as I've heard weights will increase bone density too. Thanks so much for these wonderful videos!

Really enjoyed this. Though I thought forward flexion -forward bends-was not allowed with osteo - just half lift from hips.

Thank you! In my experience, Standing Forward Bends, for most active folks, are safe if done with slight bend in the knees, hinging at hips and no long holds. Half lift from hips is a good modification if you are at higher risk.

Hi Leslie! I'm proud of your dedicated practice to increase your bone density! Yoga and walking are the key! My research has brought me to understand that doing both bridge pose and triangle pose regularly can help with hip and spine strength. You will find a version of bridge in just about every class I teach. You got this!!

Bridge pose was the first suggestion my yoga teacher (who is also a holistic MD) made when I informed him of my osteopenia. It strengthens the muscles of the back and the hips. You create resistance by pushing your muscles on your bones in a way you don't in everyday movement. It opens the chest and is good for posture. Worked for me!

Great question Meredith. From my research I would say this is NOT a case of Less is More lol. More stress is more effective when trying to build bones. HOWEVER as always, something is way better than nothing and heel bounces, even done lightly give a great work out for the calves and even up the chain of the legs to the glutes and hips. I'd keep dong them! namaste

This is my second time doing this session. I love the combination of stretching, balancing and strengthening. I seem to need spinal twists and they feel so good but do I need to be worried about stress on weak spine bones doing them? I'd love a session that focuses on lower back issues for those of us with osteopenia. Thanks Susannah

Hi Leslie. Those of us with weak bones do have the potential for a fracture when doing forward bends and possibly twists BUT the BENEFITS from exercise and "stress" to the bones is clear. When we twist, the muscles are pulling on the bones and this is GOOD but inherently risky too. I am not a medical professional, but as a yoga instructor who has spent the past decade doing research and using my own body as a test, I recommend regular exercise and movement and adding more weight bearing progressively. Less chance for spontaneous fractures if we are already in good shape. As for twists, best to go to maybe 60% of your full ROM (range of motion) this will have to be your call. But as I like to say "Less is More!!" Check out the very end of my latest video on Sustainability. At minutes 31:30 I begin a sequence that addresses exactly what you ask for: low back pain! Please let me know if it helps (perhaps do this stretch several times a day for a few days) I know folks who swear by this one for low pain!

Wonderful! Just one quick question, I thought if you have osteopenia or osteoporosis you should never bend over, am I incorrect? Or are you bending over in a way that helps bone density? I would also love to have you a list of exercises that afforded you the ability to increase your bone density.

Excellent question! Those of us who are not at high risk for fracture may do forward bends if knees are bent. The key is not to put load on the spine while it is rounded. Hi Susannah - as a long time yogi and runner and just diagnosed with osteoporosis, I am wondering if the bridge pose is ok also have not figured out how to bend to pick up something from the floor any tips?

Great question! The best answer is it depends. Everyone's risk for fracture is different and any physical activity may result in injury (that's my disclaimer!) Side bending is included in Loren Fishman's 12 yoga poses for osteoporosis and I trust his research. It is commonly understood that forward bends and deep twists have potential for injury (remember to bend your knees in forward bends and only twist to 50% of your ability. A good approach is to do side bends gently. (you may email me ay foreversusannah@gmail.com if you have more questions.)

Hi, thanks for your excellent question. Truth is when I created this session it was intended for folks with osteopenia. This may be appropriate if you've been exercising recently and if you have some yoga experience. I have "easier" videos should you have advanced osteoporosis or balance concerns. I'm very surprised to see her doing forward folds. Those are one of poses that are widely advised to be a no-no for anyone with low bone density! Any poses where the spine is rounded forwarded are to be avoided due to the fact they can cause micro fractures in the vertebrae! There are better videos out there for yoga practices for those with osteopoenia and osteoporosis that incorporate safe poses and modified poses for the unsafe poses Definitely don't recommend this one!

True, if you have osteoporosis you should avoid bending forward and rounding your spine. When I go forward I bend my knees and keep a straight spine.

First rule of online practice should be to remember which side you are doing. Your confusion made things more difficult
