For the first time, Steph & Kristen watch one of the most popular zombie apocalypse films to come out in the early 2000s, 28 Days Later, about a man (Cillian Murphy - Oppenheimer, A Quiet Place Part II, & Batman Begins) who awakes from his coma to only learn there are very few survivors in the zombie apocalypse, which include people who he can trust & who he cannot trust.
This film also stars: Naomie Harris (Skyfall, Venom: Let There Be Carnage, Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Man's Chest & Moonlight), Brendan Gleeson (In Bruges, Paddington 2, Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire, Braveheart & Troy), Megan Burns, & Christopher Eccleston (Doctor Who & Thor: The Dark World)

The opening scene of Cillian wandering the REAL LIFE empty streets of London is one of the greatest opening scenes in horror movie history. You can see why it has been copied so many times in shows like The Walking Dead or spoofed like in the first paintball episode of Community.

I still rate the sequels opening better for other reasons that fit it in overall as one of the best horror movie openings over. 28 days later has a solid opening and is more of that calm before the storm type of feel as well as that uncanny valley feel of being in a place that is familiar yet unrecognizable

I think what makes this so good is the fact that, while it's definitely a zombie movie, it's a realistic zombie movie; these are not reanimated dead bodies, they're just infected living humans. The DVD commentary mentioned that the disease, "Rage", is based on the idea of a super-infectious, fast-acting form of rabies.
@lampad4549

I wouldnt call that realistic just a different kind of sci fi plot device for the zombies.

Great reactions! To answer your question of WHY the scientists created the "Rage Virus" in the chimps at the start: the scientist they captured said "In order to CURE you must first UNDERSTAND." In other words, they were hoping to develop a cure for human hate and aggression, to make a more peaceful world. But part of their experiments involved trying to better understand the chemistry of "rage" and it led to the infection in the chimps.

This movie sparked the modern renaissance of zombie films and shows of the last 20 years, though the "infected" are technically not zombies. And this was Cillian Murphy's first major movie role, and now he's probably gonna win an Oscar in a few months. A year after the movie's release, the first issue of The Walking Dead comic book was published. It actually starts in a very similar way, with the protagonist waking up from a coma to find a world overrun with zombies. However, this similarity seems to be purely a coincidence.

The infected are zombies, they're just not revenants. Zombies are human automatons or servitors lacking a will of their own, regardless of whether they're alive or dead. Revenants are corpses that raise from the dead to feast on the living. Romero's zombie films are the reason the two concepts are conflated in pop culture

I just recently read on MSN News that the creators of 28 Days and 28 Weeks Later are finally coming back to make a third movie oh yeah and in this movie When Jim wakes up in the Hospital and is walking around trying to find other people that reminds me of Paul W.S. Anderson's Resident Evil 1 and 2 where Alice wakes up in the hospital and is walking around trying to find other people and it also reminds me of the first season of The Walking Dead where Rick wakes up in the hospital oh yeah and little fun fact the infected people on 28 Days and 28 Weeks Later aren't actually Zombies because they don't eat the people they kill and they're still alive and can still be killed through normal means unlike zombies plus they all starve to death at the end of 28 Days Later the infected people on these movies and similar movies are actually just called infected

28 Days Later has a total of 4 alternative/planned endings. The first one was right after Hannah crashes the Taxi into the mansion's gate. The movie was originally over because the budget ran out and Fox gave them more money to shoot a proper ending. Second ending is still in the movie though only briefly. Jim would've been brought into a hospital and Selena attempts to revive him but with no result. Afterwards, the movie would've ended the same way as in the final release just with Jim missing. The third ending was never filmed and only exists as a storyboard. In this ending dubbed “radical ending“ Jim, Selena and Hannah would've met one of the scientists that created the rage virus. Somehow they managed to capture the infected Frank and wanna try to get the virus out of him. The scientist explains them that the only cure would be a total blood transplant. Jim offers to sacrifice himself and they replace his blood with that of Frank's. It allowed Frank to turn back to normal but Jim became infected, after which Frank, Selena and Hannah just leave the building. The radical ending was cut early on as Danny Boyle realized that the ending wouldn't make any sense at all. Finally, the fourth ending, only existing as a idea of the producers, was that the events of 28 Days Later happened in Jim's head while in the coma.

The movie doesn't look like that because it's old. It looks fuzzy because they purposely shot it on low-res early digital video camcorders rather than film. It was a stylistic choice to give the film a more run-and-gun punk-grunge aesthetic. If they'd shot on standard 35mm film, it would look just as clear and sharp as any other commercial film of the 2000's. 👓

I really appreciate that one of the soldiers tried to protect the women. It shows the rest of them were genuinely just fucked in the head. Unlike the stereotype of military men are gang rapists, etc.

I mean this film does pepertuate that stereotype. All the soldier are gang rapist except one.

I can't remember the last time I saw this movie, but I really dug it the first time. I hope you two watch 28 Weeks Later as well. I thought it was just as good if not better. Jeremy Renner stars in that one. It's also interesting you see this movie now because it was just announced that 28 Years Later is in development.

Kinda wish you would've said those "types" of men. You just basically assumed all men would do what those soldiers tried to do. Felt attacked after just blatantly saying you hate men. At least make the effort not to put everyone into a box?

7:25 - This film was an experiment to utilize DV video and the small hand held cameras to have a small mobile team and have a certain gonzo-ish look to the film. At the time it was pretty edgy, now it looks like watching RU-vid at 360p.

I have been a victim of horrible acts done by people, so a brainwashed crew with a demented leader will result in such an act even without a world-ending event.

Awesome reactions to this version of 28 Days Later. There is a sequel, with an all new cast, but in my opinion, although a good film, it isn't as great as the original. If you liked the opening to this movie, please check out the 1962 version of Day Of The Triffids, which was the inspiration.
