I can't believe you pick those easily I have trouble just picking one. It looks like a real pain to put back together. Great job as always. Thanks for sharing.

They take some time to get used to... Once I get in the groove, I can pick these pretty fast. But if I haven't touched one in a few weeks, it takes me some time to get the feel for them again. They are quite unique.

Not even counting the security aspect , the mechanical part of locks is sooo cool ! Reminds me of a complicated puzzle. But it’s very disturbing that so many of them are way to easy to open. I guess it’s irrelevant that your lock is easy to open when we have several 3x5 glass holes in our homes on the ground floor that any rock can open in 2 seconds . Lol

Really informative. I had the opportunity to open one this week because a customer messed up the re keying. Thanks

I’ve seen this configuration before. In my office there was a door to a machine room. When maintenance people came around to get in that room they would be given a key to the machine room, but not to our office. This created a big problem because my office was on the second floor of one building and the main office was in a separate building on the second floor. After dealing with the situation for a while, someone came up with the dual cylinder solution. So the maintenance people had a key they worked on one cylinder and in the equipment room and we had a key that only worked in the other cylinder so we could get in our office.

Nice to see that they did a Dual Core lock. Unfortunately, those screws don‘t look like they support HyperThreading.

What an odd design? It's not quite as efficient as the LFIC cores, but I actually like the idea of having two cores :-)

Odd, but also pretty cool... can be a real money saver for landlords who want master keyed locks, but also need to repeatedly re-key locks for tenant turnover.

Well, I try to give people their money's worth. :-P I think the hidden keyway is really cool... the lock isn't expensive or rare or even hard to pick... just different enough that I really like it.
@Potti314
@Potti314 7 лет назад
Very interesting design for a master key system - having two full locks can get expensive if many doors are involved. And they are limited to exactly two keys that can operate this lock. Awesome picking. Thanks for another fascinating video :-)
@lockpickinglawyer
@lockpickinglawyer 7 лет назад
Thanks. The locks surprisingly are not that expensive. Not sure what MSRP is, but the street price is about $30USD... less money than retail store price of the version of this with one core. Even if it was more expensive, you would probably save that money on the cost to have them pinned up... or repinned.

Yale & Towne had a "BI-Centric" locking cylinder that also utilized 2 different cores, often with different key-profiles or key-ways... one being for keyed different from the other, of which could be used in a limited master-key system when a number of these particular locks were deployed, often in apartment houses, rooming houses or hotels... The benefits of this particular design over master-keying a single core is that there's often two non-interchangeable key-ways or key sections that are definitely different from one another, and resulting in absolutely no issues in various attacks such as TMK extrapolation or decoding the TMK (Top Master Key bitting... As for Kwikset Smart-Key... These locks are still vulnerable to decoding via the use of a boroscope, and can also be forced open with a screwdriver and a pair of vise-grips, a wrench or a pair of pliers... Another vulnerability of this lock is the tilpiece, of which is only separated by about 0.015" of brass, of which could be pierced with a sharp instrument through the key-way, and then the tailpiece could be then accessed through the key-way of the cylinder, effectively bypassing the locking mechanism altogether. With this tailpiece vulnerability being exploited, the lock will still appear to function or operate normally with the key, except that a bent piece of wire (modified paperclip) will also be able to directly control the cam or tailpiece, bypassing the lock and operating the bolt or latch directly through the locked cylinder. As per Kwikset's attempt at effective key-control of this particular lock, I'm pretty sure that all you would need is a Dremel Tool to further mill stock key blanks to fit their "restricted" keyway... with further decoding of the target lock with a boroscope, you can easily read the gate positions of each one of those sliders (there's only 6 possible depths per key cut for Kwikset), the key code could then be determined by decoding or by brief visual inspection (or direct measurement) of the key bitting cuts on the restricted key, since it too uses the same bitting codes or measurements as any other Kwikset key or lock that is produced by that particular company, including the Chinese imported knock-offs... I personally think that Kwikset is a low-quality lock that is definitely NOT anything remotely close to High Security, with regards to its ratings... Marc Weber Tobias reportedly tested a SmartKey deadbolt lock by successfully opening a locked door secured by said lock with the use of a flat-blade screwdriver, a piece of key blank and a pair of vise-grips (all commonly available at your local hardware store or home improvement center, without question)... Forensic analysis of the locking mechanism after the screwdriver attack involved noticeably damaged or warped/deformed components, notably the tiny sliders (of which interface with the sidebar mechanism) of which is the single only security attribute of this lock. Torque was measured at only 120 Ft.-Lbs... whereas the UL-437 criterion for torque is at a much higher 300 Ft.-Lbs. of torque... Here's the link for that RU-vid video... ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-ghM-lxacGXA.html DEF CON 21 - Marc Weber Tobias and Tobias Bluzmanis - Insecurity A Failure of Imagination Insecurity - A Failure of Imagination MARC WEBER TOBIAS INVESTIGATIVE ATTORNEY AND SECURITY SPECIALIST, SECURITY.ORG TOBIAS BLUZMANIS SECURITY SPECIALIST, SECURITY.ORG Homeowners, apartment complexes, and businesses throughout the United States and Canada have purchased locks from one of the leading manufacturers in the country in the belief that they were secure. Advertising represents they are the highest grade of residential security available as a result of security ratings from different Standards organizations. While the design of this lock effectively resists certain forms of covert and forced entry that are common with other mechanical cylinders, there are also what we perceive as serious design flaws that will allow these locks to be opened, bypassed, or decoded in seconds. Because this is one of the most popular locks in America, the consumer needs to understand the inherent security vulnerabilities in order to assess their risk. In this presentation we analyze the design of this lock and earlier similar designs implemented by other manufacturers. The focus is on a failure of the design engineers to understand different methods of bypass and to protect against them, and why standards and what they purport to define may be misleading and misrepresent the real security of a product. Consumers rely upon the representations of manufacturers and the security ratings of locks by Underwriters Laboratory and the Builders Hardware Manufacturers Association to assure them of the quality and resistance to attack of the locks they buy. We present evidence that millions of homeowners and businesses that have implemented these locks can be vulnerable to simple methods of entry of which they may not be aware. This is a classic example of insecurity engineering in a very clever and unique mechanical lock. Unfortunately, the very unique mechanism also provides the basis for several incredibly simple attacks that can be performed with a minimum of time, tools and training. Marc Weber Tobias is an investigative attorney and security specialist living in Sioux Falls, South Dakota. He is the principal attorney for Investigative Law Offices, P.C. and as part of his practice represents and consults with lock manufacturers, government agencies and corporations in the U.S. and overseas regarding the design and bypass of locks and security systems. Marc and his associates also conduct technical fraud investigations and deal with related legal issues. Marc has authored five police textbooks, including "Locks, Safes, and Security", which is recognized as a primary reference for law enforcement and security professionals worldwide. The second edition, a 1400 page two- volume work, is utilized by criminal investigators, crime labs, locksmiths and those responsible for physical security. A ten-volume multimedia edition of his book (LSS+) is also available online. Marc has written extensively about the security vulnerabilities of products and has appeared in numerous television and radio interviews and news reports as well as magazine articles during the past thirty years. He is a member of several professional organizations including the American Bar Association (ABA, American Society for Industrial Security (ASIS), Associated Locksmiths of America (ALOA), Association of Firearms and Tool mark Examiners (AFTE), American Polygraph Association (APA) and the American Police Polygraph Association (APPA). Tobias Bluzmanis was born in Caracas, Venezuela. Tobias came to the United States in 1995 and was granted citizenship in 2000. He has been a professional locksmith for the past 20 years. Tobias is an expert in Covert Methods of Entry and has developed many unique forms of bypass, custom tools, including a decoder for Medeco locks, which was the impetus for the book "Open in Thirty Seconds". Another startling fact is that it only costs Kwikset about $2.00 to produce or manufacture their Smart-Key lock cylinder, of which commonly retails as a component of a complete lock assembly that can retail for more than $50.00... At the end of the day, a $2.00 lock is just a $2.00 lock.

I use to use the vacant apartment next to mine as a "secret study" in which to get work done when there was too much noise in my own apartment (due to noisy neighbors). Now that my landlord has switched to this type of lock, though, I can't get in there anymore. I strongly regret leaving my little foldable tray table under the bed, there. I'm never going to get that back.

That's awesome! I would put a core full of steel pins on the bottom that can't be picked (meaning, too long to be lifted to the proper height to clear the sheerlines) and is drill resistant, and then put the REAL lock on the top. If someone tried to pick the bottom one, they would not be able to succeed. It's like a secret lock.

Other than this, there is the whole Yale "Bicentric" line of locks, S&G safe deposit locks, Winfield Hotel locks, there's a huge Abloy padlock, there's a couple cheap Chinese padlocks (like the GHS locks)... I'm sure there's many others. Just Google "dual custody lock" and "shared custody lock" and I suspect you will find some.

Have you made a video on "Tools of the trade?" I only ask this because there are so many cheap companies out there that are like cheap tools in general. They just brake or after one use are useless. I don't mind spending more for tools if I know there is a reason like quality, durability, etc. Someone who has used I can only imagine quite a few would have some hands on experience as to what to get, what to avoid, etc. Peace

I’d love to know where to get one of these. My duplex has a shared laundry room (both units use one laundry room) and right now the only key to the door is the key is for the other unit. So my neighbor keeps it unlocked. This looks like it may allow both of us to have a key so that we can lock the laundry room but not get into each other’s unit.

Old vid for sure, but you'd thing they would design it that.if one was open, the other would be locked out completely because the bottom or top would push into the other, though I suppose it wouldn't matter if it was opened one way or the other.

that's a neat lock! how easy is it to rotate the face plate?
@lockpickinglawyer
@lockpickinglawyer 7 лет назад
Physically, it is pretty easy to rotate. There are detents to hold it in position, but not that strong. The issue is that you can't really grip it like you see me doing in the video because the face plate is recessed into the mounting hardware. You're supposed to use that little hole in the bottom... insert the change tool, and rotate it that way.

@kylecorey88
@kylecorey88 7 лет назад
but then with it like that it would not really matter what the top cylinder was bitted at , or you could even just have a regular cylinder witha normal kw1 keyway and it would be the same thing right?all it it is in the end is a deadbolt with two keyways?
@lockpickinglawyer
@lockpickinglawyer 7 лет назад
I'm not sure I follow what you are asking... this is just two cores in one cylinder housing, setup for "shared custody" operation ... i.e., either key will work alone.
@kylecorey88
@kylecorey88 7 лет назад
igeuss what i meant was the top cylinder wouldnt really matter if it had that restricted keyway or not..both cylinders are the same thing.a regular masterkeyed system could get pretty big going all the way up toa grandmaster key..but the kwikset system would only go as far as two levels...unless they come out with a deadbolt with 3 or 4 cylinders in it lol...what they really should do is put more true gates on the wafers..then you could possibly do it with one cylinder

LockPickingLawyer the rekeying limit is basically on ownership of the key, right? So you insert current key, insert “Special Tool”, then insert new key, essentially? So can you rekey to a new key after picking it instead of having the old key? PS: if the thing costs 30 bucks all up... just replace the whole thing if you want both keys under your control :)

Hopefully the redesigned sidebar will fix the vulnerability you are referencing... I don't know about junk. Personally, I think this provides enough security when you are installing it on a house with ground level windows, hollow core exterior doors, non-reinforced wood door frames, etc. I think you get my point. This lock is far from the weakest link in the chain. That said, you are also not incorrect. It's not a great lock by any definition of the term.
