That bit of advice about removing the latent heat from the coolers before adding ice for the trip is just another example of why I am subscribed to your channel Aaron…your attention to detail is impeccable! I can’t wait for the videos of this adventure that will follow…
If allowed to make the analogy, when I was younger I had the opportunity to come across some books written by Mr. Jim Corbett. It was about his experiences as a hunter of man-eating big cats in India and for some strange reason Aaron story narrating reminds me a lot of those books, maybe same personality? Who knows.
@keywestwaterman your fuel theory is 100% correct. In aviation, we have vents on our gas tanks in the wings and we typically fill the tanks all the way up the night before. So the gas will cool down and then when the sun comes up the following day on summer days, it is not uncommon to walk outside and just watch gas pouring out of your wing onto the ground.
I too am a pilot and we plan for this. But if you fill you tanks with cool fuel in the morning and your tanks warm up, like you mentioned, they will vent the excess fuel overboard, you can never get that fuel back and you paid for that wasted fuel, and it’s not good for the water. If your tanks below the waterline on your white boat do not heat up enough that it causes your boat to vent… keep doing what you are doing!
Sorry for missing the video yesterday when you posted it.😢 Coming to view you videos is so relaxing and really gives the sense of running into a dear friend. Thank you for all of your content!!
Man I love watching you slip out of the Harbor, many many memories from so many years ago. Glad to see there is still SOME shrimp boats there. Keep it up! Love your videos.
Cooling coolers is very real. I learned that from a old timer and have stuck w/ it since. And of course, chill everything that's going into them, and your good. Tight lines from Cedar Key, Florida.
I've been to Key West ( Waterman ) l o l , 3 times in my life ! I always wanted to go to the Dry Tortuga's, but never made it there ! That last Hurricane destroyed my sister's condo off of Fort Meyer's ! I caught many a Jack Crevalle's, but never a yellow one ? I would have liked to tasted one before I returned to Illinois ! I like the Gulf waters more than the Atlantic side ! Incredible colors in the waters ! I would have liked to see a CLEAN & COOK on that A.P. ! As a marine Technician, you were correct on the fuel heating up creating a possible Vapor Lock situation ! I was surprised that you used black totes down in Florida where temps exceed 90 degree's !
Bonus episode! Love these Dry Tortuga episodes, as always 5 stars 🌟 I’m not sure about a petroleum engineer but I guarantee some know it all will tell ya 😂
We build fuel tanks for the marine and automotive industry. We have to design the tanks to where the fuel nozzles shut off at 95% to allow for fuel expansion. Our plant is in Florida and you are correct on fuel. You definitely get more when the temperature is cooler.
Thanks man, great info in this video. When I went to Tortugas I slept on one of the picnic tables so I am with you on sleeping outside. No bugs just rats and crabs. And it was a new moon, incredible star gazing.
Really awesome can't wait to see the rest of the trip.. be nice to get a shot at the stars at night for the people who have never seen the sky without the light pollution I know 50 60 miles offshore at night time it is totally mind-boggling reminds me of what you could see from land in Florida when I was a kid
Very good Aaron on the coolers , they do exactly what you said. On the fuel note I did read a few years ago that it is smarter to fuel up in the mornings being that it's cooler. But another note should be that when people in general put the nozzle in the gas tank they usually press the handle for the fuel to come out quicker. That is what burns the fuel down. If you press it si the fuel comes out at a slower pace it also lets you get more fuel for your buck. It's like the harder you step on the gas, the faster that gas gets consumed. Great video brother. I'm gonna check out today's after I'm done with this bad boy.
Great video Aaron! I’m not a petroleum engineer, but as an accountant, I’ve done audits on gas stations and when we counted the gas, we always measured quantity and temperature. That temperature was used to convert the litres to 15 C (roughly 60 F), which is the norm in the gas industry. Supposedly, the gas pump would convert the gas going through it to 15 C when we pump it. In essence, we should always get the same amount per litre/gallon at any point of the day. Obviously, gas pumps go through regular testing here in Canada on predetermined dates, so I’m sure no big oil people would ever tamper with that. Loved the video. Thanks for sharing!!!
nice, looking forward to this series!! i love how you can hold your breath so so long. I was in my pool today, 8 feet deep, my ears were killing me and i was only able to hold my breath for about 10 seconds at the bottom LOL, i was checking out a rust stain on the liner.
As an engineer I can say yes you'll get more fuel into a given space of it's cooler. Racing teams use this concept to pack more fuel before the start of a race {see motogp}. However you'd need to know if the pumps compensate for such a thing, meaning how they measure the volume of fluid getting delivered. So, you'll get more fuel into your fuel tank when it's cooler but I imagine you still pay the same total cost per gallon. Because, loss prevention...
The way most pumps compensate for this is double walled underground tanks that barely change in temperature so it doesn't matter, in cases where you may be pumping thousands of gallons like in airplanes or really big boats it does, and the measurements are made by weight and not volume so there is no compensation to do exactly to avoid this, at your normal leisure boat pump the machine measures by volume, so if the gas is heavier you get more, but even then the pump doesn't loose because it compensates with the people who won't or can't fill up in the am(time is limited)...
So there are actually some good reports supporting your theory on fueling times. Also, never run the pump handle wide open. They say that in the heat of the the faster you run the pump, the more it releases the vapor trapped in the tanks. So you are definitely on the right track.
That looks like a ton of fun. I’m glad someone else knows about pre-chilling the coolers. I told my dad about that last weekend and he looked at me like I was crazy haha
Lol I just found your channel and have been binge watching some episodes when this showed up. New subscribe for sure! Thank you for sharing your adventures :D
That's such a cool destination. The prep work for the trip is interesting, always good to learn things. It's great how you explain the dangers of diving and how you guys mitigate those by being smart and looking after one another. Looking forward to seeing more of the trip! Shame Paddlin Madeliene couldn't make it, she always makes the videos entertaining! Cheers!
You get payed for this kind of stuf and the rest of us pays top dollar for it. You wriggled yourself in a prime position my man. Waiting for day 2. Good luck.
Awesome video! My fiance and I have been there via the seaplane before but taking our own boat and fishing/camping on the island is definitely a bucket list trip for us!
I'm looking out my window right now at my buddy Mike who spent about 20 years on that beautiful National Park. Mike took care of the Island with TLC. Most excellent Folks 👍🏻✌🏻🙏🏻
I don't know for sure either, but I'm with ya on getting fuel in the morning. Its always made sense in my brain lol, love the videos man keep up the good work 🤘
I just found out my Dad hired you a few years ago for mini season. He was a captain of 72 Viking Princess with a Stamas CC as the tender. You took the kids on a charter and they LOVED it.
Awesome trip! My family and I made that run last July. It was awesome! We try and hit as many national parks as we can. Finally checked that one off the list. It took several trips to the keys to finally get the weather window. Didn't want to do the cattle ferry.
