Another great and beautiful day. Nice fish and a fun battle. Keep it up Captain. P.S. Halibut Magic is great on halibut but it's also good on rock fish.
@CaptainZac

Hey Wayne thanks for the positive comment and I'm glad you enjoyed this king salmon action! Great to hear you enjoy the Halibut Magic on rockfish as well as halibut! You might try making some fish tacos out of either rockfish or halibut seasoned with Halibut Magic. The other day I made creamy butter dill cod (simple - heavy cream, pacific cod, halibut magic) that was crazy good. I think it pairs well with any white fish (or white meat for that matter - chicken, pork, etc.). Thanks again and tight lines my friend! Captain Zac

Wow Captain Zac, Awesome RU-vid’n and extra efforts back and forth over the gunnel to adjust the camera! Love how you and Mary fish together and Mary’s laugh even when bonked in the head by the net handle! I like the filet footage too, nice clean trimming! Have you ever tried the Collars on the Kings? If you have a chance to watch Reed The Fishmonger, he shows simple way to harvest the collars. Also tasty on Rockfish. The only thing I do different from him is I snip all fins off, not my thing!
@CaptainZac

Hey @rosscurtis8107 many thanks for the positive comment and I'm glad you enjoyed this king salmon action, especially the jumping back and forth prior to finally landing this fish! Thanks for the suggestion I'll check out the videos re: collars from Reed The Fishmonger. I harvest the belly and make a v-shaped cut up into the collar and typically smoke this piece of extra-oily meat - very tasty! I realize some harvest the collar meat behind the gill plate so I'll check out that video. Thanks for the tip and tight lines my friend! Captain Zac

I bumped into you guys at Deharts. I'm the one that calls you Captain Controlled Chaos. Mary, if you're going to sit on the gunnels when fishing for halibut I personally believe you should be clipped into the boat with a climbing harness. I saw a 200 lb man get pulled off of his feet by a barn door, and he was IN the boat. Be careful out there, and keep the content coming..... Derby board approaching.
@CaptainZac
@CaptainZac 9 дней назад
Hey Alan it was great crossing paths the other day! Yikes how scary - no doubt those big halibut are powerful enough to pull someone in, especially if their drag is set tight. I'll mention the climbing harness idea to Mary. Looking forward to getting after the salmon derby this year! Thanks again and tight lines my friend! Captain Zac

Mary, Great job on that fish. Zac, great job on the video. Sorry to hear the terminal King fishery isn't going well for the Juneau area. Good luck on future trips and my you be blessed with many Coho to make up for the shortage of Kings in the area.
@CaptainZac
@CaptainZac 9 дней назад
Hey Mark thanks for the positive comment and good point about the cohos hopefully making up for a slow terminal king salmon fishery! Perhaps I'll have to swing over to Sitka one of these days and get a taste of the open ocean salmon fishing! The last time I fished out of Sitka we did pretty well. Thanks and tight lines my friend! Hey Capt Zac, what exactly is considered a white king? We lived in Alaska for almost 6 years and I never heard that! Tight lines and thanks for taking us along!!
@CaptainZac
@CaptainZac 11 дней назад
Hey @goodcitizen64 thanks for stopping by and I'm glad you enjoyed this king salmon action! Great question - about 5% (1 in 20) of king salmon have white flesh instead of the typical red color. In Juneau we see a slightly higher proportion of white kings since our local hatchery stock has a slightly higher propensity than average to be white kings. Here is an article from Alaska Fish and Game that explains it a bit further: www.adfg.alaska.gov/index.cfm?adfg=wildlifenews.view_article&articles_id=738 Check out the flesh color in the fillet portion of this video - you'll see it is white instead of red. The 25lb king I caught recently was also a white king - that video will show the fillet process as well. Tight lines my friend! Captain Zac

Thanks @fox4guy! I was running off my kicker at approx 1-2 mph depending on the direction, wind, etc. I leave my main down when using the kicker to serve as a rudder for steering. Thanks! Captain Zac

@@CaptainZac appreciate that info, I'm up here in south central trying to figure out how to troll for Winter kings without a kicker. Currently have twin 100's and have had some success just running in idle with one main. depending on the tide it usually runs right around 2mph

Hey @markleonard-pe3os thanks for stopping by and I'm glad you enjoyed this king salmon action! In addition to me eating it, we share it with friends and family and also donate it to a local food kitchen. Love the videos, couple questions, why do you swing downrigger forward? I always swing mine aft, pull the other line, ive lost a fish leaving that downrigger out. Next question, did you try to net that fish tail first? 😢 Also, could you show the spin you get with those nose clips? Ive tried them but never have been happy with the spin. I use some different ones i like. Keep up the good content, thanks Capt Zac!
@CaptainZac
@CaptainZac 9 дней назад
Hi @Patrickmcmanus1967 thanks for stopping by and I'm glad you enjoyed this king salmon action! I swing my downrigger on the fish hookup side towards the front of the boat to clear the way for the net since most fish arrive at that back corner of the boat while trolling. If I swung the downrigger towards the back of the boat, I'd have to net the fish over the boom of the downrigger (assuming I'm in the boat and don't jump out on the transom). No it wasn't tail first - it was sideways and despite the fish being very close it made an unexpected run. I thought I could still net it which is why I tried. It can be a coin-flip sometimes about when to go for the net scoop, especially with a king. One of my previous king salmon videos from a past season does show the spin of the herring in these clips. If I can find it I'll share it here, otherwise, feel free to watch some more of my king salmon footage! Tight lines! Captain Zac
