3 HARSH REALITIES of SAILING in Paradise | Ep. 109
#boatlife #frenchpolynesia #livingonaboat
Sailing in a remote paradise comes with a price. Uncomfortable anchorages, difficult shore access, and sometimes BUGS. Soon we are heading to an even more remote island and we’re low on food so we want to re-provision and fuel up. But we’ve been told the anchorage at the main town nearby is HORRIBLE so we have another plan.

If you're new here, Harbors Unknown is the story of two dreamers, Kristin & Fabio Potenti, & our dog Yoda. We're a small family living aboard our catamaran, SV Wanderlust, sailing to Harbors Unknown. Exploring the world, connecting with people and places through the local cuisine, and showing how great food can be cooked on a boat with limited space and resources. Seeking to balance the desire to explore and travel to beautiful, remote locations while leaving no footprint, minimizing the Hawthorne effect of the observers who change the environment she or he observes.
We hope to inspire people and showcase the possibility of living an alternative lifestyle that provides freedom and fulfillment, all while keeping it real. Sharing the trials and tribulations of living off-grid, acknowledging the discomfort of detoxing from the modern world, finding pleasure in the subtleties of nature and joy in simplicity. Attempting to understand what makes the world tick and tock but also trying to gain a deeper comprehension of ourselves and identify what will satisfy that hunger for further exploration, for purpose. We have set off on our voyage sailing around the world! Subscribe now to join our sailing adventure.

Guys, for info "pamplemousse" is literally French for "grapefruit"... the thick skin is simply caused by the soil type, (Nitrogen imbalance) and the taste is due to local soil, weather etc, otherwise its the same fruit as you'd have at home. Good video though, thanks for sharing.

Fantastic vids in beautiful places ,thank you for sharing ,looking at the starkness of some of the hills, you would think it was fully overgrown with vegetation ,that waterfall falling into the sea wow beautiful ..
@HarborsUnknown
@HarborsUnknown 10 месяцев назад
Thank you! We're so glad you enjoyed the video!! This part of the island is lower altitude so it doesn't get as much moisture from the clouds and it's more exposed to the wind causing there to be less vegetation.

I appreciate your description of the leeward side of the island. I experienced the same at St. Kitts in the Caribbean. Lush on the windward side. Dry and hot leeward. 0n the leeward side, we anchored, bow and stern, to account for the "catabolic" winds sweeping across the hills. I had no knowledge of the waves. We were anchored near a spit. That night, the waves wrapped around the anchorage. The waves would run PARALLEL to the shore. That night a confusion ensued with another nearby anchored boat... My fault. 😢

I hope U bought the bikes. They would soon pay for themselves. Safe travels ❤
@HarborsUnknown
@HarborsUnknown 8 месяцев назад
😂😂😂 unfortunately not and yes! You are correct, they would pay for themselves in short order. Buying stuff in French Polynesia is far from easy. Ordering form the US or NZ basically doubles the price between shipping and local tariffs. If you find a warranty issue there is no help, most warranty policies don’t include return shipping form abroad. We are looking for it here but have not found the right ones. 🥲

Hi! Here in Brazil there's an amazing island called Ilhabela which has lots of mosquitoes that love people... What we do to get off alive and with minimal bites is to have vitamin B group suplements. Legend has it that that changes the "smell" of your skin to them and the don't choose you. Might sound weird, but it works for me, at least. Fair winds!
@HarborsUnknown
@HarborsUnknown 10 месяцев назад
Thank you for the very useful tip!! We will definitely try that! Mosquitoes are no fun!😊😊😊

@@HarborsUnknown Ooooops!! I just corrected the vitamin group: it's B! Not D. Look for some kind of "B complex" suplement. Sorry for the confusion!
@HarborsUnknown
@HarborsUnknown 10 месяцев назад
Cool!! Vitamin B!
@charliesimeon
@charliesimeon 10 месяцев назад
@@joseerazevedo I concur Vitamin B is the one. I took Vit B (1000mg) pills once a day for two weeks before going in the Borneo Jungle and wasn't bitten once. It does indeed change your smell, but takes a while to kick in...

Beautiful places and great videos! So I'm wondering, do the locals have such a bad time with the bugs as well? Are they only prevalent on one side of the island? How long will you guys decided to stay here before moving on? I think you originally said 12months, is that still the plan? Are you able to pick up your new Auto steering ram here? Fair 💨 and following 🌊!
@HarborsUnknown
@HarborsUnknown 10 месяцев назад
Thank you! I believe they have issues with the bugs as well but know more about avoiding them. When we returned a bit later to swim with our friends a local guy came in the water as well and we think he was saying the no-no's (no-see-ums) bite the first few people in the water. That was me and our three friends who all got eaten alive. We'll be in French Polynesia until probably next July. We did pick up our new ram and just installed it! Fingers crossed it works!

Can you provide more info as to why you anchored out the dinghy? If I heard the audio correctly, you said that the shore is steep but I don't understand why that would motivate you to not simply drive the dinghy onto the shore and pull it out onto the beach?
@HarborsUnknown
@HarborsUnknown 10 месяцев назад
We decided to anchor out because there was a decent size swell and it's quite heavy to pull up on shore. Also we flipped over in the dinghy when we were trying to go to shore in Escudo de Veraguas, Panama so now we're very cautious.

Yes, the fresh water pool was at least 10 degrees F cooler than the sea water.
