This is my version of the 3 hook clipped down rig using Breakaway and Gemini tackle. I would be grateful for comments and interaction to help fine tune and improve the rig.
This is my go-to rig for "Tings", bass and flounder when "scratching".

excellent video and easy to watch, I use a 1 hook clip down usually but will certainly try the 3. I also use braided line the blue seaKnight W8 (8 strand) 50lb on a penn but has a diameter of 0.32mm so around the same thickness as 15lb mono. It's a bugger to cut but no need for a shockleader. I did make a few rigs up with the braided but again it's more difficult to thread through the beads etc. So reverted back to 50lb amnesia for the main rig and 20lb memory free sunset amnesia for my snood. What I also have decided to do is not use the crimps but instead use 14lb power gum and tie that around the line into a knot above an below the beads for the spring. I lay it along the line form a loop then wrap it around the main line about 4 times and pull it to form a knot on the line. these can be moved up and down to adjust the snood lengths. I would also use a snap link on your swivels so should your snood get damaged you can unhook it and stick another on quickly. I changed the bearings in my penn and bought a lighter spool these are rocket bearings and they made a huge difference. My go to rod is still my zziplex quatra match I had made about 35yrs ago, its a great rod for pendulum casting. Here in south wales during the summer there are some good marks at low tide for the smoothies which make a great sport. Looking forward to taking my caravan back down west wales this year and hopefully catch a few Bass providing we get out of lockdown.

Cracking video mate! I always use a uni-knot for my worm snoods, I like to think that the backwards facing tag acts as barb and stops worms from Sliding back down the hook, it helps not to rip the worms up aswell, had that problem in my starting off years lol

Brilliantly presented.The only thing I do differently,because I'm tight !,is I only use an SRT at the top,and have 1'' for each snood swivel/cascade to move in between the crimps.

Great rig Mark, I use it down southwest wales after plaice. Everyone is different when it comes down to design and it’s all down to what makes you feel more positive about the rig. I’ve done it with 3 springs and I’ve done it with 1. And on my own experience it’s easier for me with 3. Hope your rigs catch you a few, tight lines 🎣

Another great video, thank you!! I really like this rig setup but my only concern would be the crimps on such a light line.. I often use a basic 3 hook flapper (Glued Rig) down Southbourne - it’s caught me pretty much everything down there from Plaice, Bream, Bass, Whiting and a tiny small eye ray. Like I say, my usual flapper rigs are pretty basic and I have not yet had any interest up until now, to try it clipped down.. obviously with it being clipped it makes it more aerodynamic for better distance and will defo give this setup a whirl next time I’m out! Thanks again, and keep them coming! 👌👍

Another great video Mark, keep up the good work. I have a few 3 hook rigs in my wallet, i quite often send one out along with my other two rods, or three depending what the ground is like. I just think that it is better to catch something , rather than still trying to hook into something larger just because you think you should. I'd rather not blank unless i can help it, and a scratching rig just always seems to work. Let us know how you get on with those attractors, i have some on order, but won't have a chance to fish this month unless the Mrs changes my plans (she likes walking so i am trying to veer her towards some coastal walks so i can fish).

Something little that I do with clipped down rig construction. Hang the rig up from the imp / bait clip , then find everything is down the bottom out of the way and each time you clip a snood the hooks are hanging on their own accord etc ready for the next components to be slid up . Hopefully you understand what I mean by this . Keep the enjoyable videos coming 👍

Mark Williams Sea Angling also neoprene tube cut into 10 cm lengths to replace crimps , just thread rig body through twice gives you a adjustable trace for changing hook snood length. You will find most people advice is to place 2 or 3 pieces of tube below the swivel ,personally I find just the one is adequate and has the advantage when using a single clipped down paternoster that it can slide down to the weight and lift the lead up ,the way a pulley rig would if you hook into something of size .

PS . Some anglers use a heavy stop knot (Gemini Neoprene ) instead of a crimp at the bottom of each SRT. spring , this gives a lot more adjustment when tensioning the rig . Another option is to use a Breakway impact shield instead of an Imp as this can also be moved downwards to tension the rig .

Hi Mark. Similarly to the other comments I only use one srt at the top. Personally I wouldn't go as light as 40lb on the rig body when using crimps, i never go lighter than 60lb with crimped traces (without wishing to state the obvious) because they compress the line which introduces a weakness. I have also made the transition to a braid-straight-through set-up. I've found that 50lb is adequate, even using a 6oz lead (though I tend not to fish with more than 5oz, even here in the Bristol channel, and that's due to the diameter of the braid). I don't have any issues with hook pulls, I have only encountered advantages to this type of set-up and never intend to go back to mono. My preferred braid is Daiwa J Braid. Tight lines mate!

Neil, thank you for your response it is appreciated. I like the single spring idea and think I’ll give that a go next and build the rig on a stronger body. I tend to use 4 oz weights on my lighter rigs and 5oz on the heavier stuff. Rarely use a 6oz.

Hi Mark - a neat rig but have you considered using the gemini snood clip so you can swap snoods easily whilst fishing? As all your snoods are the same length you can make up a batch of hook snoods at home, maybe with sifferent size hooks and then clip them on/off without having to tie knots on the beach. 40lb rig body will be fine for 2 to 4 oz leads only. Really interested to hear how you get on with braid straight through. Will lack of stretch mean pulled out leads in stronger currents? What will the extra thickness knock off the cast? And what knot will you use at rhe business end? Looking forward to the next video.👍

@seaangling
@seaangling 5 месяцев назад
Braid straight through has its advantages and disadvantages. It will cast beautifully but needs to be wet or it may wind knot. It will collect fine weed that can accumulate. The lack of a shock leader can ensure continuous strength but any tangle can prove impossible to resolve. I currently fish standard mono and shock leader. Fluro is transparent in the water and the best option in daylight and nervous fish.

Watching further....i know lads who use 100lb braid on their multis on conger set ups off the shore, no leader required obviously, but the eels they catch mean business and big! So they need an advantage to be able to bully them away from snags, and it works fine for them. Iv seen them landing 40lbers, lost bigger, and massive tope to, on gear paddled out and dropped by kayaks.
@seaangling
@seaangling 8 месяцев назад
Straight through braid can have its advantages but needs additional care and is a nightmare once it tangles. I’ve used 90lb spectra to land a skate of 174lb but I am reconsidering that setup and possibly changing to 30-35lb mono. Tope can be landed on 20lb mono mainline unless the location dictates otherwise.

@@seaangling ye ideally you want a copolymer line of about 30lb if your going to nylon lines for rough marks for sure. Ultima f1 titanium i use, but 25lb with greased weasel leader 60lb. That handles any kind of grounds really, using multis and an ubu esprit 13 as my main rod, eels or bass in my swim don't stand a chance 😂 and the copolymer line handles being constantly hit by floating debris that passes up and down tide in the estuary.

I really like the look of this rig, I can see where others are coming from with just one spring at the top though. And also 40lb line for the main body is too light. Always better to be safe than sorry, last thing you want is to cast that out and it snaps and comes down and caves your head in.

@@seaangling i think its just a case of remembering, you have a 70lb shockleader for a reason. If you make the rig body out of 40lb then theres really no point in having the shockleader. If you are only overhead casting then the risk is only to you if it snaps off halfway and goes straight up and straight down on your head. For any off the ground or pendulum casting the risk is to both you and anyone within a 100yard range on the right hand side of you (if you are right handed). Keep the body preferably 60-70lb, your snoods can be as light as you like. In any rig, even when clipped up, you need to consider the strength of the line between you and the lead. When I used to fish 20 years ago i never used a shockleader. When I returned to fishing last year, i didnt use a shockleader. But I had several crackoffs (being 20 years older now so stronger and able to put more pressure into my casts than I was when i was 14). It was only then that i realised i was putting not just myself in danger but other beach users. Now I wont go lower than 70lb (with a 6oz lead) in my shockleader and rig bodies. Better be safe than sorry, if I hurt someone else along the beach i wouldnt be able to forgive myself. Anyway, you know all this, a 40lb rig body might be ok with a 4oz lead, but its too easy to get in a situation where you need more weight and just shove on a 6oz lead without thinking.

Can i just say about the amnesia, they come in plastic tubs right? You keep the spool in the tub, close the lid with the end of the line sticking out, then pull the end round to where the tubs lid hinge is, and you can spool off the reel inside the tub as it turns freely inside. You can just mke a hole in side of the tub, but pulling it through the corner of the hinge, straightens the line, making it nicer to work with. And have you tried the mustad uptide hooks? They are hyperdermic sharp mate! And super strong.

I got in to watching your channel during our 6 weeks of C-19 lockdown here !! Just a couple of comments 1) I'd use this rig fishing for our Blue Moki (like a big bream) in autumn around Kaikoura - Moki are strong (they pull line !!), so what happens to the SRT spring that is fully compressed / crushed during the fight? 2) Don't you need a small bead between the crimp and the bottom of each SRT spring? Otherwise it's SRT spring compressed against crimp during the fight. Love the channel Mark, especially the rig tutorials :-)

In other words, I used stop knots below the SRT springs not crimps. If you use crimps, if you lose one hook snood, the whole thing is useless (unless you make another snood and knot it on to the swivel such that it's the same length as the one that broke). Big Danny, I think I need some casting tuition as I’ve never had a rig part due to casting. Tbh I was intending having some tuition this year but events have taken over for the time being. I have swapped my rig bodies to either 100lb or 60lb depending on rig. My latest video shows that change and will release soon. I am learning from all of the input from experienced people like yourself and really appreciate your thoughts. Thank you for your insight, I have always watched with fascination and awe the tournament casters. 👏👏👏

Try to avoid the Gemini springs with the green beads ,they tend to break eaisly ,the red beads are much better and easier to thread on the rig body . When threading on the small beads , lay them on on flat service eg. a small serviette , and poke the rig body through the whole , easier than using the fingers .

As an aside, I wont use crimps. Every pre-made rig I bought with crimps has snapped of at a crimp on casting at some stage during the session. Only make my own now and never use crimps.

I’m looking at replacing the crimps, what do you use instead? I’ve ordered some power gum to try.

@@seaangling i just put the line twice through a bead, i dont know if that also causes a weakness but ive never had a rig snap at the bead doing this

Mark Williams Sea Angling breakaway make a crimp that has a rubber sleeve inside so you can’t damage the main line, you also need a special crimp tool. Never used it but looks like you can’t damage the line with that system

You do not need 3 SRT springs. 1 at the top of the rig gives more than enough tension. I actually cut spring in half and just use half a SRT Spring on top swivel. Personally every clipped down rig I make is 70lb rig body. You then have the option of slipping on a 5oz or 6oz lead if needed. Less rigs taking up space.
@seaangling
@seaangling 4 года назад
Mark, nice tip with the SRT springs and I knew someone would have found an alternative way. I totally agree with the 70lb rig body but I’m going to give these a go and see how they fare. I enjoy making rigs so lots of opportunity to experiment and change. 👍🏻🎣

@@seaangling Keep up the good work on the videos. Also if being super picky. Personally I would never use Amnesia as a rig body on clip down rigs. I find its too stretchy. If you want a cheap non stretchy rig body, Asso Classic is good, non stretch with good abrasion resistance. I also use Powergum stop knots instead of crimps, takes a lot lot longer making the rigs but i can re-tie snoods easier with the ability to adjust them if required. I would also ties a stop knot and sequin after your attractor on any clipped down rig. The attractor will slide up the snood when casting with your bait.
