3 Simple Engine Checks When Buying A Classic Car
Episode 508 Autorestomod
ENGINE DIAGNOS TIPS!
We use the 1967 Mustang as a test bed for judging an engines health.
Keep it cold. Make sure to tell the owner beofre you roll out that yodon’t want it warmed up before you arrive. Never buy a car that the engine is warm to the touch when you get there. This usually means that they are trying to hide a rod knock or other issue.
Check fluids first. Oil should be good, fresh oil could be the sign that they are hiding an issue.
Check coolant. Any oil or milkiness indicates a head gasket issue. Or a cracked block.
Cranking check. If it lopes on cranking it has a dead cylinder.
Vacuum gauge. It can tell you a lot about the health of an engine.

Diagnostics are very important. This newbie appreciates stuff like this. Show good and bad vacuum responses, plugs, coolant. Thank you.

Great video! I really appreciate how y'all pulled one of the plugs and showed the difference between the engine sounding "normal" vs. missing. A lot of the old guard/experienced gearheads know what to listen and feel for, that new gearheads don't. Possible other video idea, if you could play audio clips of various engine/drivetrain conditions and kinda explain what sound you're looking for and what it means.

Great video guys. Cam - what about the GM HEI distributors don't you like, and what do you prefer? if it makes a difference, I'm running a 1970 302 with points right now. Have had the truck for about 20 years, believe engine is stock with the exception of a Edelbrock Performer 289 intake and carb.

Mostly it is the bulk. You can't fit a bigger style air cleaner. Other systems are neater looking (more "normal" on a Ford.

One of the things I like to do is use a temp scan gun to identify which cylinder isn’t contributing. But on cast iron you have to do it before it’s heat soaked, on headers it seems to be easier to identify. Even after it’s hot.

When you showed the plug did it have a gasket? I thought ford spark plugs used tapered seats?
@tombryant1104
@tombryant1104 3 года назад
Normal reason is engine has aftermarket heads.
@AutoRestoMod
@AutoRestoMod 3 года назад
Not sure what is going on there. We'll get deeper into that on the tuning video.

AFAIK only Ford OHV V8 engine to use 14mm gasketed spark plugs were the '54 239 & 256(Mercury) Y blocks. With introduction of 272 & 292 for '55, switched to 18mm tapered seat plugs. Used in all year FE, and small blocks till around '76 when plugs changed to 14mm tapered seat. Those were already used in Cleveland & 429 CJ/SCJ plus Boss 302 & 429. OK I didn't mention Boss 351, essentially Hi-Po Clevelands. Nothing really unique about those. Aftermarket aluminum generally use ¾" reach gasketed 14mm plugs. The aftermarket irons probably use 14mm ½" reach, never owned a set.

Hey guys, I have a ‘68 mustang coupe. I’ve been looking into getting the suspension worked on. It’s just my daily, it only has the inline 6 in it. What would you recommend for me to do to make it handle and drive as smooth as possible? I’ve already looked into doing the Shelby drop
@AutoRestoMod
@AutoRestoMod 3 года назад
Good daily set up: QA1 single adjustable shocks, rebuild the front end, 1 inch front sway bar. Disc brakes. (optional>> roller spring perches

Are you guys gonna do a dedicated tuning video? Would love to see y'all tackle timing, carburetor adjustment, rocker nut adjustment, etc. I've gotten to the point where my engine starts and it runs well enough to test drive, but it idles high, chatters slightly, and definitely isn't tuned ideally; watching somebody who knows Ford small block engines work with theirs would be a Godsend for me. Cheers!

+++++ on compression diagnosis. I've been cranking engines without spark to determine possible compression problems since days of buying wholesale gems from dealers back lots. One morning found nothing promising at my favorite Pontiac dealer, left went back to shop. Couple hours later my partner shows up with a Dodge Omni, I passed on. It's going thut, thut, thut. I say "Bubba, that thing has a dead hole"(cylinder). Just needs a wire or plug was his reply. I bet him neither would fix it & pulled out compression gauge. Zero compression, I won. He didn't know I'd already given it the crank test. Let's say he learned something that day.
