This switch happens because they understand that certain behaviors are socially acceptable and will get them praise from others, while their true behaviors might not be as well received.
2.) They Use Manipulation Tactics That Require Awareness of Others’ Feelings
For example, the narcissist might give someone the silent treatment after an argument. This behavior is a form of punishment that relies on their understanding that being ignored hurts and is seen as wrong by most people.
They choose this tactic to hurt the other person, demonstrating that they are aware of the emotional impact of their actions.
If they truly didn’t understand the difference between right and wrong, they wouldn’t be able to manipulate social and emotional norms to their advantage so effectively.
3.) They Make Excuses or Lie to Cover Up Bad Behavior
For example, if the narcissist says something hurtful and is called out on it, they might quickly come up with an excuse or even deny it happened.
This shows they understand their behavior wasn’t acceptable because they’re trying to avoid blame or negative consequences.
If they truly believed there was nothing wrong with their actions, they wouldn’t need to lie or make excuses.
