www.myboxingcoach.com - If as a boxer if you are faced a taller opponent it need not be turned into a particularly complicated matter to beat the guy. In this 90 second boxing tips video and article I will offer you 3 simple tactics to apply when faced with a taller boxer who has a longer reach.
Before we get started though, let's remember something about facing an opponent in the boxing ring. This 'something' is very simple, and it's this - great boxing skills win the day. Height and reach are of course important considerations in a boxing ring, but only when they are owned by a boxer who has the skills to make the height and reach matter.
If you are faced with an opponent who is tall and has a longer reach than you, but you are simply a better boxer then beating the guy up will be a fairly straightforward exercise. Moral of the story - practice, practice, practice.
There are tons of variations with respect to defeating a taller opponent. Given I am fitting this into a 90 second video I am going to single out 3 tactics.
Close the Ground - This is a very simple, blunt and powerful way of getting into close range. Speed is of the essence. Use the double arm block, keep the head low by using the duck and cover the ground very quickly! This will enable you to get close to the taller boxer and unload the shots as soon as you hit close range.
Long Range Trigger - This tactic is about appreciating that a reach advantage is only an advantage if the owner of the reach is able to dictate when the shot is thrown. Against a taller opponent, a great tactic is to draw their lead by feinting an then use the simple back hand block to stop the incoming straight shot. Once you have blocked you can step in to deliver effective long range shots followed by hooks, uppercuts and whatever else that comes to mind!
Draw Them In - The final tactic is designed on the principle that very often taller box-fighters prefer opponents to come forward. Having the opponent come forward very often fits perfectly into their style of fighting, letting the opponent walk onto shots. Often though, taller boxers are less inclined to attack the opponent, so you can work this to your advantage. Go on the back foot, make the taller opponent come to you. As the taller boxer commits, switch your mode to attack and explode forward.
You can mix these 3 tactics up in a single round to get some cool results. They are simple rules to overcome a taller boxer but the simple stuff works, that's a mantra I use over and over.
