Thank you for showing these exercises right away in this video! I believe it’s the first video I’ve EVER clicked on that went straight to it without a 20 or 30 minute speech first!
@@sentimentaljourneyproductions Our Great Physician gave us weak knees that degrade with age; It's men and women who came up with cures and spread the knowledge
Also, you might want to try a metabolic approach. I had chronic knee pain which forced me to retire early from the military. Turned out I was insulin resistant and my body was inflamed from too much sugar. Cut out sugar and carbs from my diet and knees and shoulders no longer bother me.
Thank you! I'm an American living in Japan. I saw a doctor a few days ago after a well meaning masseur over stretched my leg and the next day my knee started hurting and swelling. I could understand some of what the doctor was saying to me in Japanese but certainly not everything. I then I started watching your videos and so much became clear. Your advice is so practical and smart, and the exercises you suggest work beautifully and immediately without pain killers. Consider me a devoted fan, Doctor!
I've never had a therapist explain the clam shell that well, never felt the burn! Thank you for this great Demo!! Positioning IS everything with excersize. I love that you are to the point and clear!
We are glad we could help kavkazkayadevushka! Yes you’re right position is everything for exercise! Please let us know how it goes with your exercising.
Started using your stair climbing technique yesterday. It worked for me. You guys are great. I am no longer young and still engage in a competitive sport. Staying in the game is the first goal. Healthy knees matter -- a lot. Thank you very much.
Brioooooo. Been walking with heavy limp for a week. Just 1 session of 10 minutes dangling my legs got them feeling sooo limber. Its always the really obvious stuff that brings healing and correction in life. Praise God, and thankyou!
@@TheKritter91 wowww... Congrats 4 ur healing. Am doing these exercises daily. having knee pain for 2 years. I can still walk but limping. Have lost weight 30 kilos but still feeling pain. Hope this will help me
You are an amazing teacher. The routines you have shown me are so different from the ones I got at physical therapy, but yours are helping me. Thank God I found your channel. And thank you for freely sharing your knowledge with people who otherwise couldn't benefit from it. God bless you.
I’m 73, knee problem for 40 years, I use the tail gate dangle when ever I feel pain, I sometimes add legs weights, this works great for me. Pain immediately gone.
@@farzanajaveri7204 wasn’t the video on? Actually all it is, sit on a chair, bed or tail gate, dangle your legs over letting the your lower legs swing freely, where there isn’t any pressure on your knees. 9 minutes should do it, enjoy
That tailgate exercise is really great in reworking back. Outstanding advice there. The clamshell exercise is very good to incorporate and you showed the proper way. Thanks a lot for this great work!
Your tips are wise. Thank you. I am almost done with PT with torn meniscus. Your videos are helpful, explaining the mechanics and precise movements helps tremendously.
I had pretty bad knees and I was young (26) and my knees where fucked up. I had really bad arthritis and pain/swelling if I stood too long. My knees hurt for YEARS (6) I fixed them buy running. Yep you heard me right, running. I started off small 1 or 2 miles every three days. Then I slowly became stronger and started running more about 50 miles a month atleast. All this running made me cognizant of the food I ate so I tried to cut out junk food and sugary foods like soda. My knees and legs are well conditioned now and I have zero issues with my legs. There was a point in time that I thought I would need surgery but exercising and losing weight really really helped. Hope this helps someone.
That's incredible! Many ailments in our body occur because of our ignorance and indiscipline in doing physical exercises and wrong way of eating and living our lives Bro u rectified both and now your body has shown positive results Thank you Jesus
TYLER DURDEN. ..Happy for you! I'm following your advice...but starting off slowly. I must admit I have no more knee pain. Still slowly progressing everyday!
Hi and thank you for the tips. I'm in my early 50's and joined a gym here in the UK over a month ago. I thought my painful when climbing etc knee would stop me continuing but the next day the pain was gone! It still can get triggered but I believe both rowing and bike riding were the cause of the pain going and you have just for me confirmed it. I also appreciate the other tips as well. Over a month later and I'm still enjoying the gym and having a lot less bother with my knee. Thanks again. AL.
I have been jogging extensively since teens and ended up damaging my knees. I switched over to swimming and cycling and eventually my knee joints are healed up. Its a myth that damaged knees cannot be healed.
Wow thank you! The tailgate swing got rid of my knee pain the first time I tried it. I believe a small fragment of loose cartilage was causing my pain and this exercise caused it to move.
This is really excellent. I have had a knee issue since going over on my ankle in 2008 and the British NHS response was, 'You're too young for a knee replacement.' I like the idea of very gentle exercises and when waiting for the bus and sitting up high, I already swing my legs (so I'm doing something right).
Hey Marie!!! We’re glad to hear you’ve already been swinging your legs! These exercises are a great starting point. They’ll get you down the right path. So sorry to hear about the NHS response. That response is all too common from mediocre healthcare. Don’t settle, do all you can to prevent a knee replacement!
Thank you! I'm dealing with medial meniscus posterior horn tear and lateral meniscus due to injury. Had surgery on both tears, the lateral in 2016, successful and the medial meniscus in February 2019. The new MRI shows that the medial meniscus is detached again. I truly appreciate the information! I'm very active person and this injury is preventing me to live life in the way I enjoy it.
I'm sooo sorry to hear this Anelia :-( There's usually some underlying problem that surgeons and physicians just aren't trained to see or treat. It's what we specialize in here in the clinic. We often find that weaknesses or poor movement habits are at the root of a meniscus problem. Once those issues are fixed, they can feel better and the person can get back to life as normal...even with a tear. Have you heard about our 28 Day Knee Health & Wellness Boost Program? www.epmanualphysicaltherapy.com/28-day-knee-health-wellness-boost-program It may be what you need to get on the right track with your knee problem.
@@epmanualphysicaltherapy , thank you! In my case it's not immobility that caused the weakening of my meniscus tears. Prior to my left knee injury I was in the gym 5-6 times a week for 2 to 3 hours. I also did moderately kickboxing. However I was under tremendous stress the last 6 years and high cortisol is not a cartilage friendly plus the physical high impact injury. Thank you again for taking the time to address my situation. Be blessed!
Won't work! I'm an exercise physiologist and will tell you the only way you can fix it is with a quick 15 minute surgery and HOPE that the cartilage has not detached from the femur or tibia in what's called an articulate cartilage injury. A lot of times an MRI mistakes the articulate injury for a torn meniscus until the surgeon goes in and visibly sees the real problem. Then in that case most can be fixed with a technique called micro fracture IF the injury is less than 2.5cm. Problem is instead of a 1-2 day downtime (in most cases) after surgery with a torn meniscus, the articulate injury calls for 6 weeks off the injured leg. Good luck!
I wanna take the.opportunity of thanking you,...your generousity of sharing your knowledge and genuinity,it helps.me a lot and am preety sure a lot too," God" bless your heart❤

You're welcome Snm Awungshi!!! Sorry to hear about your extreme knee pain :-( Yes, the leg swinging is a great start to get the pain under control. If I could hug you, I would. A year or so ago I could barely make it down the stairs. My left knee has been bad since a child and my right flared up after a simple yoga routine. I am trying to drop some weight and since I have dialled back on the bread I notice a huge relief in the knee pain. I joined a gym a couple of weeks ago and the treadmill is brutal even at low speeds but I noticed the row machine seemed to feel good on my knees, also the elliptical felt like it was strengthening, but man the treadmill, even a slow walk hurt. The thought came to me that the pool might be a really good place to get some resistance without the weight. I am also going to try all your exercises and I came across the butter knife massage from another chiropractor, so I am going to give that a whirl. I have to tell you that the RU-vid saints are restoring my faith in humanity. 🇨🇦❤🇨🇦

What a good Doctor. Thank you for caring and sharing
I most appreciate the explanation for the clamshell. The PT's never got the point actoss because they don't talk about what muscles are supposed to be activated, and not the knee tip. I have been a fan of Egoscue in the past and you have remined me of that. Cheers! (edit: Pete Egoscue's books also state that cartilage can heal and grow back.) (They only spoke of hip position during the exercise and I thought the point was to extend rom.SMH!)
Hi sir, my knee injury happened in both my knees when I had gone for a deep tissue massage and while I lay on my abdomen, the masseuse twisted my ankles inwards and then stood on my legs and walked all the way up putting immense pressure on the inner part of my knees. After that, I had great difficulty to even walk with the inside of my knee hurting a lot. Ever since this, I have been seeing your videos daily. I just hope my knees heal.
This is very sensible advice. Exercise which is too vigorous may end up actually causing pain, so this gentle repetitive approach could be more advantageous.
Hey ! Thank you for these excellent tips. I have been in PT for x3 weeks now. I have been doing the Clam Shells incorrectly. Feeling stress in the thigh and not in the glute as you advise. God Bless Texas !
Hey 212southsherman, bummer that you've been doing clams incorrectly....it happens in the medical field way more than it should. But I'm glad that you've found out how to fix it! How are you doing today?
Well well, without knowing, I've been doing these low resistance exercises forever! Maybe that's one reason why my Knees have lasted so long....as a new 70yr old, 10yrs ago my Orthopaedic Surgeon highly recommended I undergo a double knee & hip replacement, but I declined! I haven't been restricted in all my daily duties, which includes maintaining our Property. I'm 99% pain free, never taken any prescribed medication or pain killers & hopefully, I will never need to have TKR or Hip replacements in the future! I recently had a full radiology/X-rays done, which shows mild OA in my hips & mild to moderate OA in my Knees. Those exercises, with good diet & supplements are so important! Kia ora👍
@John Ormsby if you don’t mind me asking, how long have you had mild to moderate knee osteoarthritis? Was there a cartilage damage too ? Did your suggest knee replacement for mild arthritis or has there been an improvement since ?
@@tr6151 I noticed a change in my knee function about 15mths ago, as I began experiencing slight pain in my left knee. So the onset of OA probably began to manifest just b4 15mths ago. The knee function has slowly deteriorated to the point where I wear knee sleeves, when lifting heavy weights eg: wheelbarrowing top soil. I don't take prescribed meds, but do use an organic ointment called Omrub, which helps with pain management, along with organic turmeric & cold pressed Olive oil & Cod liver oil. Using my Rowing machine, Exercycle, Treadmill & 1 km walks are helpful, along with plenty of leg 🦵 stretches. I am seriously looking at having, this year 2023, Hyaluronic injections of my left knee, so I can start jogging/running! I turned down double knee & hip replacement 10yrs ago & I will avoid TKR as long as possible...PRP (Platelet Rich Plasma) injections or Stem cell replacement are other options.
Thank you so much Dr. David for this uber helpfull episode. Been doing your exercises everyday for 3 months and went from no walk/exercise to 5K every single day!! Next is getting ready for my 5K run. I'll keep you posted! 🙏
I like to add a comment about the leg swinging off the table I saw a another doctor video where you at 10 lb ankle weights each leg works great... Thanks for the helpful video.
i also modify the clam exercise for my bottom knee.. i hang it over the bed or bench and lift it upwards..it works the outer knee which was notoriously weak for me
Thank you for this. It brings me back to childhood when we used to sit on chairs swinging your legs. I guess we have a reason for everything we do but I’ll definitely be getting this one ago thank you.

Thank you for this! I've been doing high rep, low weight exercises with dumbbells and a wobble board and a wobble cushion, stopped running entirely, my unloader brace is sitting unused, I have an unfilled prescription for a viscosupplement and I'm going to book a ski trip - although I'm going to be very careful what kind of terrain and skiing I do. I've gone from constant limping to rarely noticing the knee. This after a diagnosed medial meniscus degenerative problem with clear bone space narrowing. I was really getting pessimistic about recovery (I've always loved cross-training including some running, played rugby, like to windsurf, ski, do karate and motorcycle), bought a shorter motorcycle for greater stability when stopped, have taken almost two years off karate but feeling pretty optimistic about the prospect of resuming almost everything (although likely avoiding running) now. My physio and my chiro were great in getting me started, but the only way to get better is keep at it - there is no quick fix. We need more health care providers like you; surgery and painkillers have their place for extreme and acute events, but getting your body to adapt and heal is far better.
Doctor your videos are the best am doing the exercises to build back cartilage in my right knee because I had a tkr surgery on my left knee its two years now and still having issues am trying not to have another surgery because I went through too much with my left knee Keep up the good works
I'll add strengthening your feet. Many of my knee issues were caused by weak feet from highly padded shoes and shoes with heels. I now only wear zero drop barefoot shoes and have really strong feet that now have high arches and, as an added benefit, my bunions have almost gone.
Hey Sportys Business! You're right! Foot strengthening is really important. In fact, we made a video about it more recently. Thanks for sharing!!!
So nice to see people not pushing $urgery as the fix like my ex doctor did! I switched to a whole food plant based diet, did similar exercises, and soon the pain was gone and I increased my function dramatically! Even old, arthritic knees can heal!!!
Amen to that. A WFPB way of eating along with proper exercise can make dramatic improvements. And you are so right about various doctors only seeing surgery as the answer. While there are many surgeries with good results, I've seen enough that turned out badly that I am staying clear of that option.
@@dmbmeister0 My brother was told if he got a total knee replacement it would dramatically increase his quality of life. Two failed knees, lingering hospital infections, and 8 surgeries later, he is virtually an invalid with no knee, and his "options" are fusion or amputation! When I had a tibial plateau fracture a few years ago I was forcefully told I absolutely needed a total knee replacement if I didn't want to be in a wheelchair for the rest of my life. He was very aggressive and condescending when I expressed fear and concerns, and I never went back! I decided to take my chances helping my body to heal... until all else failed. I ate well, got plenty of sunshine/vitamin D, did my own rehab, stayed off of it for 3 months, and... if I thought he'd remember me I'd love to walk into his office and kick him with my "bad" leg in his obnoxious __________! (fill in the blank)😄
@@CharGC123 Would you mind sharing what kind arthritis and what stage of it you healed by plant based diet ? Was there a cartilage damage that healed too ?
While doing the clamshell exercise the glute opposite to the leg I lift also get fired up sometimes ? Is that okay. Doc you are a blessing to ppl who experience knee pain. More power to you!
Hi, I've been suffering for over a year with knee pain. I just had an ortho consult and was told I had some bone on bone. Most of the knees have cartilage except for a part on the inner area. Now that my meniscus injury is not bringing tears to my eyes, I feel comfortable doing the rest of the exercises. I have been doing the legs hanging one all ready. Because I sold my boring exercise bike, couldn't I just lie on my back, and gently bicycle my legs. My ten speed is hanging in the garage, because I don't like helmets...I prefer the wind in my hair lol. Thanks again for the support...the surgeon is still wringing his hands, awaiting my return ...play spooky music!
Hey Jean! Great to hear that you're trying this approach and waiting on surgery. It's even better to hear that you're able to move your legs better since your meniscus injury has flared down! You can definitely try doing an "air" bike while on the floor and see how it goes. It might be better to do extra tailgate swinging. @@epmanualphysicaltherapy I did the clam exercise, but it killed me the first time. THEN I did two days ago, and it went much better. I really love it when I am performing an exercise, and really concentrating on the exact point where I should feel the burn. It helps to not think about when that pathetic pain will hit. I want to know why it hurts most, lying on my side trying to sleep. I have to lay my leg straight on a pillow. I was unable to bend the leg deeply when lying down, but can now. Also, I couldn't understand why it hurt so much sitting in the car. It didn't hurt sitting on a chair. THEN I kept asking, why is that, and decided, it had to be THE WAY I WAS GETTING INTO THE CAR. I remembered after a back injury, that we should pivot in and out. I immediately got out of the car, and re-entered it pivoting, and it was like magic. SO, maybe you could suggest some NoNo's if an injured meniscus is a problem. Believe me, when I am working in the shrubs, and flowerbeds, I feel like a pretzel! I am doing lots of ladder work, as I believe my shrubs have doubled my height. It also does not hurt to wear sandals with a heel. So, there is vast improvement, but I remember you did mention it would take a lot of time. Thank you, again for the support. I appreciate it so much.
I had severe knee problems around 1987 while I was in the Marine Corps. Basically I wore out the cartilage. But in doing so I subconsciously was favoring one leg over the other and so the muscles in my left leg started to atrophy without my knowledge. This put extra stress on my right knee. So eventually both knees had problems. After many months of Motrin and dealing with navy corpsman I finally got to see an orthopedic surgeon. He was an old guy who told me that years ago they would just tell their patients to take it easy. He said now we know that what's required is for you to slowly build the muscles around the joint to pull the bones apart where the pain is occurring. so for the next 6 months I was on no running at all. Hell I could barely walk without extreme cruciating pain. Anyhow the first few weeks you told me that while I was sitting at my desk to merely tighten the muscles around my knees and then relax. Repeat this about a hundred times. And then do it again as often as possible throughout the day. so you might end up merely tightening the muscles 3 to 400 times a day. A few weeks later he said I could raise my feet off the floor to add a little more pressure while doing this exercise. Several weeks after that then he told me I could cross my legs and exert a little bit of more pressure against the leg muscles. this whole process took several months of slow deliberate work. But he said that it could Stave off surgery for 5 or so years. like I said this was around 1987. it has now been 32 years and I have not had any major problems with my knees since.😁 best of luck to you whichever exercises you go with, just keep at it and have patience. it will pay off.👍
Thank you good man. I don’t have much cartilage behind the knee caps from basketball and rock climbing. I will start those exercises now and see how I feel in a couple months.
Jonny H Actually I failed to do this daily, so no results. I talked with a doctor and he thinks here’s no way to ring back cartilage. He said leg exercise can strengthen and align the knee cap.
I saw the clam shell exercise on another video and couldn't understand how that helped the knee. Now I realise that it wasn't explained fully and the way I had been doing it didn't help the glutes at all. Thank you for this, now I'm doing it correctly and can feel it.
I have healed torn meniscus in one of my knees. Riding a recumbent bike was my main therapy. Provided the movement doesn’t irritate your knee, I highly recommend this exercise. In my case the circulation effect on the knee fluid countered the inflammation I was experiencing. Eventually I just didn’t experience any inflammation. Try to keep sugar out of the diet as best you can.

Thank you for this information. I’ve had so much doom and gloom from doctors. ( it’s my age it can’t get better etc) so this video is so much more positive. Thank you. Just ordered a rowing machine and will do all of this daily. I cant walk far so cycle for exercise instead, but it’s a bit hilly and the hills hurt so rowing makes sense to me. I didn’t realise that synovial fluid feeds the cartilage? Did I get that right? I am booked in for knee replacement surgery but keep putting it off. X-ray shows no cartilage and bone damage. Can these 3 tip still help me and avoid surgery if I do these tips daily? 🤞🏻🙏😊
Hey Karin! Very cool that you got a rowing machine. GREAT investment in your health! Yes you heard right! The joint fluid feeds the cartilage, that's one of it's many purposes. There is a point where the arthritic changes and cartilage damage might be beyond healing naturally. Some of it depends on your specific activity level and tolerance for your current knee condition...but we have had people postpone their knee replacement to try treatment with us and then later cancel because they're feeling so much better. A great place to start at home is doing our 28 Day Knee Health & Wellness Boost Program. Have you heard about it? In this program, Dr. David covers in depth all this teachings and specific exercises he gives his patients in the clinic. So far, we've been getting great reviews from people that completed the program. At the very least, you'll learn how to better take care of your knee replacement if you end up needing the surgery anyway.
Hi, just what I have been looking for! Been having knee pain whenever I walk down the stairs, especially the right knee. I will definitely try two of the exercises to see whether it will help. By the way, I am just above sixty years of age.
Mr or Mrs. Low, glad to hear that you found this video. I hope that you get some relief from climbing the stairs. Have you had a chance to try these exercises? How did it go? Any updates to share?
Thankyou!! I have suffered with knee arthritis since I was 18, now 50. No family history- strange. As I approached 40 after 3 kids, the pain was unbearable and the weight started piling on:/ Dr's say I'm too young for surgery, which scares me anyway... As my children are athletes we have these machines at home!! Cant believe no "Dr" has suggested dangling legs off the side of a bench/table- Very excited to try these options! Thankyou again!
Hey Polliwog G! You're welcome! Sorry to hear about your knee arthritis at such a young age :-( Your youth is your advantage right now! You've got a great shot a healing without surgery because you've got youth and time on your side. It wouldn't be that case if you were 70+. Dangling legs off a bench is just the starting point.
