Thanks, Zulie... I’ve been writing for medium for 3 months now. Last week, I wrote 2 stories and they both got curated. One of them was even published in the startup. I think what happened was that I decided to write with curation in mind.
That's definitely good! I typically meant this for new stories rather than published ones - have you tried that? Let me know if you have any results that way.
Great tips Zulie, they make perfect sense - I've been curated once on Medium, I have three stories right now that have been pending for two days, so it makes perfect sense to me that they would put me in a slower queue.
This was very helpful Zulie. I just published my first article using your advice about making the tags with Medium topics. No way would I have known to do that otherwise. We will see how it goes. I'm looking forward to learning more from you. Thank you for sharing and being an inspiration for writers who want to make a living doing what we love!
Hey Zulie, Your video was very informative as usual. I tried the 3rd strategy of using the topics as the relevant tags for my own story and suprisingly not only did it get curated faster but it also got curated in exactly those five topics which I basically used as my tags. It was so crazy! So, I just wanted to thank you for all the helpful content that you put out here for other writers, especially for this amazing hack, I'm gonna stick with this one for a while now.
Hey Zulie! I've actually posted my political satire on Medium for a long time, but just kind of posted and ran until a couple of months ago. I never was aware of any rules or anything else there until I came upon your informative videos - so thanks. My question is about curation. I received quite a few e-mails from Medium way back in the day, asking me to post here and there and never responded back or may have written something sarcastic like "why, no one reads them anyway." Just for the record, I did join way back though. I was not trying to be mean, I just thought Medium was simply another place to post my blog, but didn't think it had any readers. So, that probably pissed off the Medium folks. About the only violations I can think I may have done was post pics without credits and included links in posts to my primary website. When I became aware of everything (because of your videos) that you can get paid and about getting into publications, I noticed I was already accepted into a bunch of them, so I chose "Extra Newsfeed" which seemed to fit what I wrote. That said, I have NEVER been curated and assume I never will be at this point. Do you think my assumption is correct and that I'm in that "permanent curation hell" you often refer to?
Haha I love "permanent curation hell" as the term. Honestly, the answer is I don't know. Right after I posted this video, Medium announced they were making some *major* changes to curation process, so my running theory is PCH no longer exists. Best way to find out is to publish new content and see what happens!
I love your video's they have helped me a lot. I am yet to have a story curated. I have only written 9 stories so far over the 3 months I have been a member. So it's either that my stories have just not been good enough, or that I am in fact in curation jail. I am aiming to get 2 articles out a week and am just trying to learn more as I go so will see what happens. Thanks for this valuable information.
Medium has it's own page about curation which says the first phase is automated. I guess it is a spelling and grammar check, and maybe some sort of NLP just to filter out the dross and maybe to check for possible categories. I also heard that some publications have curation rights so their stories can bypass the regular curators.
@@ZulieWrites help.medium.com/hc/en-us/articles/360006362473-Medium-s-Curation-Guidelines-everything-writers-need-to-know "Our curation process relies on both human judgment and technology. We use algorithms to help us find high-potential stories. Our algorithms are designed by humans who spend a lot of time looking at stories on Medium to understand quality and design an algorithmic model that takes important story elements into account. We then use human judgment and these standards to confirm the quality of these stories, selecting those that meet a high bar for quality for curation."
Hey Zulie, I have multiple curated stories and a decent curation rate, but I still have some stories that haven't been looked at by curators for over 2 months, is there anything I could do to get these stories evaluated?
Probably not - if it's been 2 months, they've most likely moved on, too. Medium has a HUGE number of stories submitted every day so it's best to keep putting new opportunities in front of them versus waiting!
The rules of the game have changed. Curation is no longer the only threshold. Medium announced this with his new update. Focus on building connections. Please Zulie make a video on this. Btw My articles are 2 months old , they still didn't get curated.
I did! Really annoyed they changed things like 3 days after I published this video lol. Here's the video: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-JVnTyrgTzlo.html
I have a theory - are you publishing in Better Marketing/Programming, PS I Love You, the Ascent, or Mind Cafe? I *think* they have an auto-curation agreement with Medium, so it gets automatically curated, then later tags are manually added. But I don't know for sure. Also, curation changed since I published this video so probably irrelevant now anyway :'(
@@ZulieWrites I'm publishing in my own tiny publication-- medium.com/mathadam Maybe they're thinking, "Let's auto-curate this guy. What harm can it do? It's not like anyone actually READS this stuff. Right?" Then the curation bots have a hearty laugh at my expense.
@@MathAdam Wow, in that case, it might be that you meet some minimum pre-curation threshold? I've heard about this from other writers - if, say, 20/20 of your past stories are curated, then they know you're curatable and just whack you in the fast list. I write too much about medium (automatic disqualification) so I can't confirm, but maybe!
@@ZulieWrites Yeah, maybe. It would be nice if we could become enlightened to the mysteries of the Medium algorithm. Often, I'm afraid to try anything new, because I don't want to offend it.
I'd love to but I try to stick to stuff I know a lot about so I can answer questions and be helpful - and unfortunately, I've never done a series on Medium! Could you clarify what would be helpful for you to know!
Let's say I want to write a short fiction story and break it down into multiple articles. How can I create a series so someone can read all of the parts without searching for them?
Oh, Medium has changed it since I made this video. You don't get notified anymore. Instead, you have to go to your stats, click on the story, and check if there's a line that says "Chosen for further distribution" beneath the title.
Zulie, I think its about time to invest in a better mic... it will improve the quality of your videos tremendously! you can google best mics for youtubers ... there are very good ones for less than $100 off amazon. 2nd, its a minor thing... I would suggest you lower the background music a little bit... while its relaxing, its also a bit distracting if its this high... Thanks for your videos anyway :)
Hey TimTim, thanks for the feedback! I have *just* investing in a better mike, hopefully arriving today, and I will be lowering the music in future videos!
Best strategy is to move on! If you want, you CAN delete and republish with significant edits, but in my experience it's a better time strategy to try a new article
Hard to say without seeing the stories in question! Most common issues: - no credit on the photo used - no conclusion - typo/grammar issues - too diary-y, not enough value for reader. Hope this is at least a little helpful :)
Ah! Hate that for you. OK, so views come from 4 sources. 1. Followers 2. Curation 3. Any followers of the publication you put it in. 4. (to a lesser extent) search engines If you have few/no followers, no curation, and are not putting it in a publication, that might explain why! If you DO have all those things and you're STILL not getting views, it's your title. Medium can do all they can to promote it to your followers, etc, but it can't force people to click. only your title can! Hope this was helpful!
The best publication is always the one that's best fits the topic of your article! And the curation will always depend on the quality of your writing. Becoming a writer is different for every publication. Usually, you can go to their page on Medium, and you'll find a tab that says something along the lines of "write for us" or "submit." I hope that answers your question! If you need more help on this, I made some videos that explain all the details. Just search my channel or start with this one: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-42GT00zOHfg.html
Zulie I have a question. Hopefully you'll answer. So is it okay for writers to pick GIFs from the internet and post in the article? With due credits to the source of course.
What will be your suggestions for those who do not live in a developed country? So, most of the medium readers can not relate to the story, written by those writers.
@@sassyandawesome3838 Ah I see. I think it removes curation from that old one. If it's unlisted, it can't be recommended to anyone through curation topics after all. I'm not sure what would happen if you re-listed it after.
Hey! Not exactly - this is all speculation, too, I should say. I *believe* that when you use tags that overlap with topics on the topic page (medium.com/topics) then it is *faster* to get curated. Even if you use no tags or the wrong tags, it still ends up in the curation queue at some point!
Medium is a good place to publish any kind of content! It does curate fiction (medium.com/topic/fiction). You should keep in mind they do not curate chapters, so the pieces need to be standalone to be curatable. There isn't a huge audience for fiction there right now. I still recommend publishing there because a) that could change in the future, and b) there still isn't any better place to write fiction and get paid for people reading it, and c) I find the editor very intuitive and easy to use. If you are thinking about writing fiction on Medium, I lay out my strategies for doing so here: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-OIId7hcIqOU.html
Hello, When you get your article published to some publication, they do get that money which you should be getting according to the partner program algorithm or you don't get anything?
