Good question, sometimes increasing the contralateral tilt can help increase speed. Sometimes it does not. Depends on the sequencing of the throw before and after. The average professional pitcher, according to peer reviewed data, is between 12 and 20°. Often, in the presence of core weakness and instability of the lumbar spine, increasing extension 25° or more can increase some stability by relying on compression of the facet joints in the lumbar spine which can increase velocity in the short term. This is not an optimal strategy despite the fact that may lead to velocity increases in the short term because it can predispose the athlete to injury in the long term.
