Hi Becky! I am a new subscriber and I really admire you and love learning from your videos. I am 68, have cancer and am bedridden but sweetie, you have made me want chickens! I promise if I'm ever well enough, I will only get two at first and I will be ready for them before I get them. But after that, the ONLY thing I promise is to try to take excellent care of them and make them HAPPY CHICKENS!!!

I never realized there were different temperments in chicken breeds (like dog breeds). My grandparents were farmers & they only kept one breed of chicken, the Leghorns, in a large coop. Their neighbor only raised Australorps, a large black flock that free ranged. Maybe this helps to explain why. It's sad that those old farmers are gone now & their amazing knowledge too. Thanks for keeping alive the farming tradition of passing on the knowledge & experience - especially when it comes to the animals! 💚👍👍

Hello Becky. We have one hen that doesn't lay and when she does the shell is soft. We are feeding your mixture of food plus 15% Laymore mash. We have 5 hens and one rooster. The hens are a year old. We also give them oyster shell and DE is in the feed.
@BeckysHomestead
@BeckysHomestead 3 года назад
That is a young hen. I would try feeding her a little meat every day in the morning. I have had a few hens take a little longer to mature, so just make sure to throw the crushed oyster shells in their run (lots of them) and feed the meat in the am. ☀️❤️☀️

I like the “sweet” personality do you know of any critical heritage breeds with this type of personality?

What type of feed do you recommend to feed hens that only one has started laying so far of a flock of 7 hens? The person I bought them from said he thought they were about 4 to 5 months old. I have a Golden Laced Wyndotte, Americauna (she has laid 2 eggs in 2 days so far), Easter Egger, Black Cochin Bantam, 2 White Silkies and 1 Buff Silkie. They are all rescues and so much more happier at their new home but I want to get them the very best organic feed that will keep them healthy and laying lots. I have done a lot of research and there is so much information out there it's a lot to take in. Thanks for your help.

I started my chickens with oyster shell grit but there is now a supply shortage in all the stores anywhere near me. The substitute they gave me was calcium carbonate. Is this what you would recommend? My girls are all still quite young. They started laying at 16 weeks and are now almost 21 weeks. I have fed them what you recommend and they love it and have been very healthy with no issues so far. I have your book but I obviously didn’t watch the chicken math video. 1 per person. 🤦🏻‍♀️ I started with 34. 7 different breeds. I promise I am a very attentive chicken mama so I hope to avoid issues that you were concerned about. I made sure I was very prepared but I didn’t think of supply shortages 🤦🏻‍♀️ I’m getting about 19 eggs per day the last couple days but not everyone is laying yet. Any advice? Is there something others than oyster shell that would be better that calcium carbonate?

If you are not in a terribly cold climate you could build that coop that Becky has or a hoop coop. They care inexpensive. Then if you can afford to raise them up a bit you can get good money for a 16 week old pullet. I've seen them for sale by me for $75 a pullet. As far as rooster are concerned I haven't looked into that because I can't raise them where I live.

How to make ur chickens happy? Create a paradise for them. My paradise includes fresh water daily.....fresh food measured in quantities and spread out to prevent fighting....native plants that provide protection via thorny bushes and plenty of shade and micro climates for cooling off....shrubs dead wood native shrubs and tress that produce berries for a more natural forage while they free range.....correct roo to hen ratio.....however im going to suggest something taboo.....im so sorry but if a beautiful majestic bird of manages to snatch one of my chickens its ok....im glad to give back to nature so make sure you use incubators to keep your flock numbers up. I know the last part is gonna be insane to some but I love nature
