I have been impressed for some time with the .327 Federal Magnum, and even have a video proclaiming it as my carry round because it has full size pistol power and low recoil, but in a pocket gun. Today I am testing Buffalo Bore hard cast ammo, the 9mm is a 147 gr and the .327 Mag is a 130 gr. Always appreciative of any channel help :) www.patreon.com/user?u=5828221

Amazed to hear about the bear story. Goes to show that ammo choice is critical. Nice to know that if you own one of these guns you have an optional carry round for a woods walk in case you get mugged by a Sasquatch. Times are tough, you never can tell....

@K Gehringer From what I gather report is similar to .357 but with the option of H&R or S&W rounds you have lots of options to control noise. If I could afford to get one I would carry the less punishing rounds for EDC and save the boomers for when there is concern of thick skinned critters with claws or tusks. 😊

After watching the 9 did better than I expected. The bullet shape is as you say probably a major factor. Both bullets are rather heavy for caliber so the tumbling is not really surprising.
@bloodstriper3649
@bloodstriper3649 3 года назад
Not to mention that a short barrel with such a high FPS in the 327 significantly increases the tumbling factor. A longer 4 inch barrel could possibly mitigate that.

It's an amazing weapon. It's sort of like a 9mm long in a way....you get similar energy with 9mm+P and .357 Mag in snubs, but the 357 has twice the recoil as it's more powerful. Same with .327 VS .357, you get all the power of the .357 but none of the recoil.

One of the very early write ups for .327 Federal Magnum summed up what makes it "superior" to 9mm quite clear. The ballistics .327 Federal Magnum was getting from a 3 inch revolver were roughly the same as 4.5 to 5 inch barrel ballistics on 9mm using +P loads. So even in the LCR with it's snub nose, compared to that Taurus, it's still superior ever so slightly. But the main point is you typically need a longer barrel i.e a larger gun to achieve the same ballistics. Of course, the drawback is obviously capacity but I'm not trying to make that argument. And in my testing of .327 Federal this has shown to be true. Back when Speer made the 115gr Gold Dots for the .327 in my 3 inch SP101 it was producing similar or superior ballistics to 9mm 115gr Gold Dots depending on the barrel lengths. Compacts with 3.5 or shorter barrels in 9mm were worse, but 4.5 inch barrels tended to produce roughly the same numbers and performance. I've done a bit of distance shooting with them too to see if the "flatter trajectory" bit held much weight and I can safely say you notice differences out from 40 yards and farther. Up close, not too massive of a difference in my hands but your results may differ. Overall, looking forward to the tests.

I was pleasantly surprised at tge 9mm velocity. 975-1000 fps is considered good for a 147 from a 4" barrel. The 327 is interesting. A 130 gr bullet is very heavy for the bore diameter, so the SD should be very good. And we have seen that a JHP of 100 gr or so works well. One of the commenters mentioned that other manufacturers should get involved. I think a 7 shot Kimber (K7S?) woukd be great. They might have to make the cylinder slightly wider and adjust the frame dimensions accordingly, but the diffs would not be huge. Should be a great carry piece.

It’s been a while since I read about the Grizzly bear shooting on BB’s site, but the gun used by the guide was a Smith and Wesson 3953 (or 3954). Those 3rd Generation Smith 9mm semi autos are well known for reliability and ammo insensitivity. I have owned several including a DAO 3953. Minor correction, barrel length is 3.5 inches, not 4. The real reason for my comment: excellent video! Thank you.

I believe the rifling twist in the short barreled 327 is to slow to stabilize a bullet that heavy. The LCR was designed I believe to use bullets of 115 grains or less. Still it was interesting and informative to see the difference in both rounds. I would like to see a comparison with these loads out of 4 inch barrels. The 327 should see a good increase in velocity and penetration and will likely be stabilized in the longer barrel aiding in its penetration.

Sadly production numbers were not as high to begin with due to lack of interest. Plus with .327 ammo not really being produced at the moment it's no surprise. Federal and Hornady are the only major companies loading for it. Buffalo Bore and Underwood do load for it as well but nowhere near the same volume and much like Federal at the moment are dedicating their supplies to other calibers.

Just a caution to you guys. I bought a Ruger SP101 in 327 on line a couple of years ago. When it showed up, I was shocked at the incredibly poor quality of workmanship on the pistol. It would not go into battery, meaning the cylinder would not line up with the barrel, there were manufacturing scars and blemishes everywhere, the trigger spring assembly was bent and parts broken..... Brand new. I took it to a gunsmith friend of mine, we took it apart, made a video as we did it, found 14 things wrong with its assembly and build, and 6 faults that would have made it unsafe to fire. I then sent the pistol back to Ruger, had a very long discussion with their customer service department, told them the firearm was so bad I wanted it replaced, and after looking at my video, the Ruger customer service person said it looked worse than anything they had seen, and she said she had talked extensively with their team about it. I got the pistol back less than a week later, with a form that said they had “resolved the 4 issues” and thanked me for working with them. Not a thing was fixed, and over the next two months I sent messages, made phone calls, sent videos...... not a thing happened. The SP101 sat in my safe for 18 months, I gave up, took it back to the gunsmith, and after ordering new parts for the trigger assembly, sanding down burrs all over the pistol, we finally got it to were it was safe to shoot, then found out the front sight was not pinned in, and lost that in the tall grass. Found that later, but decided to put an after market sight on, and found out the front sight machining was not done right....... After about $400 worth of work, got the pistol to shoot well enough I would consider depending on it..... I will never buy another Ruger pistol without first inspecting it, closely. Which is a real shame, because my first pistol was a Ruger Mark I .22, my second was (still have it) Ruger Security Six, then a Mark IV, then a GP100. After the .327 debacle, I did buy another Ruger, but this time used from a guy who let me test fire it first. Later, a friend who used to work for Ruger told me a few stories about how Ruger runs their machining tools to destruction, and his opinion is I got one of the last of the pistols that particular set of tools was “able” to squeak out. To be fair, Ruger swears to me, to this day, they did not send me a defective pistol, their inspection standards would not have allowed that to happen.

@@davidbaker1069 Sounds like a nightmare... but a rare case. Triggers are one of the biggest complaints I hear about on the SP101. People saying they need work and etc. I've had mine for going on 10 years now and it's been faithful every time. Though I have had some issues with some of the American Eagle JSP's swelling in the chambers but cant tell if that's ammo or gun related as none of the others have this issue.

@randysouse-git531 3 года назад
Interesting as always, I truly enjoy watching your methodology put into action. I've not tried the Buffalo Bore 130gr Hard Cast Keith out of my LCR. On paper, it falls into the same category as American Eagle or Speer 100gr "hot" loads I have tried. I think it's just too much for the 1.87" barrel length to "process" properly - I view such rounds as likely designed for 4" or more of barrel length and inefficient in the snubbie. That said, I do like the Buffalo Bore 130gr Hard Cast Keith in .32 H&R Mag +P. I've not shot a lot of them, but I've not seen any of the handful I have shot keyhole on a target. On paper, they are equivalent to the .327 Federal Mag 85gr Hydra-Shok or 85gr American Eagle JSP in terms of downrange energy. BB claims the .32 H&R +P does 1133fps from a 3" SP101 which yield 370 ft/lbs: the exact same yield Federal gets from the Hydra-Shok and AE JSP from their 4" test barrel. And that's one thing about the .327 chambering I love: you can deep dive the ammo choices from .32 S&W up through .327 Federal and come up with so many interesting choices to tailor fit all different types of use scenarios. Thanks for another highly illuminating video.

Seeing is believing. Calibers alone, not projectiles or velocities tested in them give them more street credit than any fact on record. With my screw off backyard hand loads I've seen some crazy stuff. Its hilarious a .22 lr or 115 grain 9mm fmj round will barely move an empty 12 oz can, exit hole almost mimics the entrance. I can't say I'm surprised by the overall effectiveness of the .327. Quite a number of years ago, I did a bit of brief contract work in a country that prohibited civilian use of any "modern military or police" caliber round, so anything over .357" diameter was off the table. As a result, the team all carried Ruger SP101 revolvers in the old .32 H&R Mag. I was pleasantly surprised with that round; it delivered energy levels comparable to a decent .38 Spl. duty load. With the .327 Federal having been designed specifically to eclipse that one, I would have expected about what you found here, though I have not had the opportunity to try it out myself to date.

@danoneill2846
@danoneill2846 3 года назад
My blind guess is that the bullet is skidding & the barrel is too short to lock in & give it the spin it needs . If you look at the bullet you can see skid marks > IF < That is what has happened , what to look for is the engraving is WIDE in some areas , they should all be the same . OR the bullet is too long for the speed or twist rate or BOTH together ... and skid = key hole . Perfect storm .

I have only recently started looking at the 327 Federal, but it seems to have a lot going for it. It's a good uptick in power over the 38 Special, without the blast and recoil of the 357 Magnum. I suspect it would be a really good nightstand gun to have at the ready.
@GunSam
@GunSam 3 года назад
It's a better snub load, but in 4" I will say the .357 Mag is better. One thing I have noticed though, is that the right .32 H&R Mag in this snub also works great. Just like the .327 is to the .357 being maybe 10% less powerful and 40% less recoil, these numbers are exactly the same between .38 Special and .32 H&R mag. And just like the .327 is to the .357, the .32 H&R Mag does everything the .38 Special does with 10% less energy, because the bullet is smaller so it takes less for it to penetrate and also expand.

I have carried a lot of things. Started out with an SP101 .357 Mag 2.25" with .357 Mag ammo, then went to a Glock 36 in .45 ACP, then went to .38 Special, .380 LCP, 9mm's, .327 and .32's, probably more I can't remember. I have finally found that the LCR .327 Mag is the best option. No better choice for a pocket 6 round gun.

For dangerous game areas, I'd stick with what buffalo bore used to test the ammo with if possible. A ruger sp101 with 3 inch barrel . They show 1291 fps average for that ,1391 fps for a 5.5 inch Redhawk and 1450fps for a 7.5 inch from something called a sparrowhawk. I know ruger does make the single six " single seven" in 7.5 inch. The lcr is IMHO better for self defense with more standard loads of 85-100 grains. Bufflo bore stayes the 3 inch will perforate a large bears skull with the 130 keith type hard cast. Im thinking the lcr definitely handicapped the .327 . It is a very long for caliber bullet and as such, it needs some extra velocity to stabilize. I'm guessing that's why they used the 3 inch barrel for the shortest length. It is commonly known that heavier bullets stabilize from faster twist rates. But that's only a partial truth. It is actually bullet length not weight that effects twist stability.however velocity also matters. the faster the bullet is moving,the slower the twist rate can be. You are getting about 150fps less than the .327 3 inch barrel tested so it is not stabilizing well. A yawing bullet will have reduced penetration. By " keith type" bullet it refers to Elmer Keith.He did most of the work for developing the .357 and .44 magnums and designed bullets for hunting big and dangerous game with them both. He would load these heavy wide meplat bullets into .38 and .44 spcl cases at super high pressure and hunt elk, bear , deer ect. The smith and Wesson triple lock n frame was made specifically for his heavy loads. As for that 9mm, I am not surprised by how well it did. 147 grains is a typical bullet weight and is figured into the barrel twist selection. Typical being 115,124 and 147 grains. It is well known for deep penetration at modest velocity. A standard 115 grain load gets about 1150 fps from a full sized pistol and already penetrates to an extreme with ball ammo and failed hollow points. A 147 grain hard cast round nose wide meplat bullet at the same velocity is going to do some serious work . I habe a feeling the drift of the 9 was caused by the round nose profile while the 327 was from marginal stability. The round nose is well known to do what it does here. African pro hunters only use round nose profile solids for feeding reliability in repeating rifles do to its tendency to curve and deflect. For double rifles ,they almost universally pick the standard tapered ogive wide flat nose for straight tracking and minimal deflection in heavy game. These are just smaller versions of African dangerous game bullets for smaller dangerous game. 130 grain and 147 grain solids for 500-1200 lbs. animals or 300-700 grain solids for 2000-9000 pound animals . These are comparatively larger to hogzilla ,mad mr moose and big grizzly and brown bears than whats used on angry cape buffalo to large rogue elephants. Crazy to think 10mm auto with heavy hard casts have taken down not just bears but cape buffalo and hippo. Rant over. Try the 327 130 grains with the longer Barrel or the much shorter 120 grain double tap wfn hard casts? Idk if that will matter though with a advertised velocity of 1250 , implying a full sized gun.

@@weirdshibainu I have thought about making a video about Buffalo Bore ammo because I find it to be the best. Most people think of it as just power, they only load power period. But what I have seen is Buffalo Bore does not always do this, they rather load as hot as they can while still making the quality right. Like their 100 gr XTP .327 is like 1,250 FPS 350 ft lbs or something like that, they loaded to be perfect, not powerful. Same with their .44 Mag 180 gr anti-personnel. Just tested it, not released video yet but in my 4" revolver about 1,300 FPS 675 ft lbs. But, the bullet performed exactly like 15" comparison to gel and expanded perfectly, over 1.5 times and no jacket separation, great accuracy. They also roll crimp their revolver rounds so well, never ever would one creep out or fall into the case. Very much worth what they charge. They HAVE to be testing their loads and then stopping right where they are most accurate and perform well rather than over-power them. As a hand loader I can clearly see what they are doing, it would take me more money to do all that myself.

Well the .327 is it's own thing and I don't really see it in the same way I see .357 Mag or .44 Mag with a snub to rifle being a significant increase. I have never really seen rifle velocities tested, but what I do know is .327 Federal uses less powder than .357 Mag but at a higher pressure, so it retains way more of it's potential energy in a snub than a .357 Magnum does.

Love my 327 ruger single 7. But to be fair, don't think the 327 had a fair chance with this test . Meaning , a 130 grain bullet is extremely large for that caliber. Then to shoot it out of a snub nose ,well no wonder it tumbled! There's not enough barrel length for the bullet to stabalize its self. And as far as picking the 9mm over the 10mm for grizzlys , NO WAY!! make that the next test, the 9mm vs 10mm with same ammo then see what you get!

About ten years ago I witnessed two guys in a car grab a woman's handbag and drag her for 5 yards or so until the strap thankfully broke. I heard her arm break as she hit the ground. Bad stuff! Even if I had been armed, what could I have done? You can't just shoot into a fleeing car. I was pissed off. This was in a relatively safe mountain town. Well, not necessarily. Basically, it's like comparing 9mm to .38 Special, and one might say 9mm wins, however 9mm and .38 typically use the same powder charge, and if it's done right the .38 can be more powerful. Same with .327 VS 9mm. The .327 has more pressure, but it's working with the same powder charge more or less as 9mm. This will add a tad more power, but the main use of the increase in pressure is to make it more of a short barrel load. Burns up the powder very quickly.
